CLUB PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
I’VE NEVER BEEN AS EXCITED AT THE START OF A NEW RUGBY SEASON. NEW AGP AND SUPER FLOODLIGHTS; NEW NAME FOR OUR LEAGUE; NEW COACHING TEAM IN PLACE; MORE ADULT PLAYERS THAN EVER AT PRE-SEASON TRAINING PLUS THE INSIDE OF THE CLUB SPRUCED UP.
WHAT’S NOT TO EXCITE?
We welcome into our league this season, Kirkby Lonsdale, Pocklington and Preston Grasshoppers for the rst time in our recent history and welcome back Harrogate and Birkenhead
Park. Whichever club is hosted this afternoon, I wholeheartedly welcome all your players, of cials and supporters who have travelled all the way to Billingham; we shall make sure that you are treated well, both on and off the eld, whatever the ultimate result.
Billingham RUFC currently turn out three adult teams plus colts in the Senior Section, the Ladies and Girls Section continues to go from strength to strength while the Junior Section has teams from U7 through to U16. Meanwhile the Vets
will be looking for more and more games now that the old boys have
got “the bug” to play once again.
Thanks are in order to a lot of people without whom this club could not function. We do aim to be the leading (amateur) family rugby club in the North
of England, so thanks to all the parents who bring their children to join the Minis, stay on to become coaches, managers and volunteers.
We are lucky to have lots of volunteers but none of this could happen without the leadership
of our hard working Executive Committee.
Again a special word of thanks goes to Club Manager, Nick Dalgleish, for his hard work over the summer months with our sponsors, many
of whom have signed up again for this season. Lastly, a big thanks to all those sponsors, without whom the club wouldn’t be quite the same.
Remember, our motto is... “Our Spirit is our Strength”.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
SO, I WRITE ABOUT 13 OR 14 OF THESE A SEASON AND EACH TIME I OPEN BY WELCOMING THE PLAYERS, SUPPORTERS AND MEMBERS OF THE VISITING CLUB.
Today is slightly different, because today I also welcome some dear friends to Billingham RUFC.
I played my junior, colts and rst senior rugby
at Pocklington RUFC (known simply as Pock) before moving to Teesside in 1988 where I joined Billingham. So, welcome Pocklington. I am truly excited to have you all here today, a club I have fond memories of and hopefully today can be the beginning of a new relationship between both of our clubs.
I had the opportunity to take our Josh’s age group which includes Josh Wilson and Danno Finney’s age group on tour to Pock when they were U13/U14 and U17/U18, both trips were great fun and I am sure there will be players who were playing for Pock those days that will be playing today. I toured with co-coaches Wayne Finney and Mick Wilson and they will both be about today too to catch up.
I am delighted to be able to sponsor today’s game and be able to give back to both clubs that have given me and my family so much. I have also managed to get hold of some of the lads I used to play Junior and Colts rugby with, both at Pock and at School in York and they will be here today too. I have watched out for Pocklington’s results every week since I left in 1988 and was over the moon to see them promoted into our league this year and I have had this date marked in my calendar since the day the xtures were announced.
I see that they have not had the start to the season they would have liked but I suspect they will be coming here as proud Yorkshireman to get their season back on track. We however, go into today’s match after an enforced 3-week break which did not come at a good time for us after a run of 6 wins on the bounce. The last match at home to Kirby Lonsdale was one of
the best results I have seen from us in a long time. We absorbed lots of pressure, executed on our ‘D’ and punished any mistake. Once we got going we were playing some outstanding rugby and made Kirby look very ordinary indeed, so much so that their President afterwards called
it one of the most complete performances he had seen! The reality is, we made mistakes, we butchered opportunities and some of our rst phase was not at its best but we still won 64:3.
It just shows that if we can keep improving, then who knows where this season will end, but let’s start with making it a ‘Magni cent 7’.
Today will also see the new Prostate Cancer UK strip make its rst appearance. Thank you to
all those who have ordered replica shirts as we will be donating a % to the charity. I’ll be able to give you an update next time out.
Good luck also to the Lions today who have a tough home xture against Blaydon Georgians who put 60 points passed top of the table Morpeth the other week, but they go into today’s game off the back of a 51:5 cup win over local rivals West last Saturday. 3TM are away to Sedge eld and look to keep their great start to the season going.
I will be a very proud man today as Pocklington visit. We have come a long way in recent years and I know all of our players, members and supporters are equally as proud as me. So, let’s put on a good show both on and off the pitch and show why ‘Our Spirit is our Strength’.

SENIOR COACH UPDATE
I SUPPOSE I SHOULD START BY TALKING ABOUT OUR LAST GAME WHICH SEEMS A WHILE AGO NOW!
We set out with the mindset of how dif cult the challenge would be against Kirkby Lonsdale. We gave the respect they deserved and it spurred us on to a fantastic result. I was probably
harsh with some of my criticism post game but I still believe we have so much more to give and achieve. We still have a long way to go this season and we are determined to achieve something special.
That’s brings us to this week, against another relative unknown for the club (apart from Mr Chairman) certainly in my memory I can’t remember a clash between us. What we do know is any team in this league is a challenge and one we must meet head on. I am expecting a physical test and a full 80 minute challenge. We have a real testing run, fortunately all games on AGPs until Christmas, one in which myself and the squad are excited about. Hopefully starting today after our mini break with a big 5 pointer.
The Lions got back to winning ways last week with a comprehensive win over local rivals West. They face a tough battle today against Blaydon, after going there and winning the league at Blaydon last season there will be some extra motivation from Blaydon.
The 3TM continued their unbeaten run last week and this week are on their travels to Sedge eld. Three squads looking for some big results and another full house!
Lastly you will see us sporting our new away kit today. After the recent years of “that red kit”, Daisy Chain and the lovely orange number we nally have a kit to be proud of. Raising awareness and money in the process for Prostate Cancer UK.
Good Luck All.
BTW, 16th December is our last home game of 2017. Christmas jumpers day/night. Cracking night with drinks owing. All welcome!

GIRLS RUGBY TASTER SESSION
SUCCESS, IS WHAT WAS ACHIEVED ON WEDNESDAY 29TH NOVEMBER AT BILLINGHAM RUGBY CLUB GIRLS TASTER SESSION.
The free one-hour session was
part of the Girls sections efforts to increase girl participation in Rugby
at the club. The section has been
trialling a Wednesday night training,
as well as a Tuesday, to try and
maximise the options for the current girls and those who are potentially interested.
From collaborations with St Michaels and North eld Schools, 5 new girls attended who had never previously been to the club, with 11 girls attending in total, with a handful of the regular girls missing.
Despite the cold weather, all of girls thoroughly enjoyed the session and laughed from start to nish. That is what it’s all about.
Phil Wallis, CRC, who facilitated the session said “To see 5 new players attend the taster session was fantastic. The hard work and dedication of the coaching team is nally being rewarded with players transitioning to club.
The next step is to keep recruiting but to
ensure the girls play xtures and attend local development festivals as Billingham RUFC and not have to join up with another team. The work with the local schools is continuing and will only go from strength to strength.”
If you know any girls in year 7 through to year 10 who want to give rugby a go, please do get in contact!

BILLINGHAM WARRIORS U13S
MAKING THAT STEP UP IN THE 2017/18 SEASON.
The Warriors are one of the smaller teams within the club. Recent years have seen our numbers swell favourably from 7 to 15 players to today being blessed with 17+ players within the team. At this age level our players vary in size from short through to very tall. They also vary in
their rugby skill levels from ‘just learning the game’ through to ‘developing great skill sets’. This season is going to be a tough one for the Warriors as at this stage of their life they are maturing in their young lives as well as maturing on the rugby pitch too. However, we have a great team of coaches who are con dent of turning this young set of junior players into a team the club can be proud of.
The rst game of the season back in September turned in a superb performance from the boys. High quality passing, running lines, support play, rucking, communication and tries brought a fantastic rst game win. The boys, coaches and parents were buzzing. Since then the team have played a number of good quality teams with a greater strength in their numbers and players with ‘greater skill sets’. Results to this part of the season have not been as fruitful as their rst game but the effort, commitment and motivation the boys are showing during our Wednesday night training sessions and Sunday morning matches is beginning to grow.
Away from the rugby we are trying to create a great social togetherness within the Warriors. Not just with the boys but also with their coaches, parents and friends. We regularly organise a tour for everyone near the end of each season. Plans are already underway for this, the highlight of the season and everyone is looking forward to
letting their hair down for
a few days after putting in a
good shift throughout the year.
It’s a great opportunity for the boys to bond and develop their friendships further ready for the forthcoming pre-season and the move up in age level for that coming season. It’s also a great opportunity for coaches, managers and parents to put their feet up too. We are also organising regular social events throughout the season. Our forthcoming Christmas Social Night on the 8th December is going to be great night! We’re sure to see some ‘interesting’ Christmas jumpers on show.
Whatever level you are at, complete beginners who have never touched a rugby ball through to experienced players looking for a new challenge, you will be welcome with Billingham Warriors. The boys are a great bunch and make new players feel welcome from the start. We train every Wednesday evening from 6.30 - 8pm and play our matches, or train if no matches are on, on Sunday mornings.
As a team we would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to Stripes Signs for their kind generosity and sponsoring last seasons annual tour
and supplying kit too. Special thanks too to EasiGears, Teesside Financial and Calor Gas for their kind donation towards the team at the beginning of the season.

CLUBHOUSE DEVELOPMENT NEWS
MANY OF YOU WILL HAVE SEEN THE ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE WEBSITE AND ON SOCIAL MEDIA LAST WEEK, BUT FOR THOSE THAT DIDN’T I AM DELIGHTED TO INFORM YOU THAT WE HAVE SUBMITTED PLANNING APPLICATION FOR AN EXTENSION TO THE CLUBHOUSE.
Following on from the delivery of the AGP, it is truly an exciting time to be a part of Billingham RUFC, both on and off the pitch.
Next year will be my 30th season with the club and I have never been prouder of what we have achieved or how far we have come. However, you are only as get as your next match or
your next project. We have achieved many of the goals we set out to achieve and we enjoy facilities that many would crave for. But we cannot stand still.
Just as today becomes yesterday tomorrow, what we have today will be the norm in the coming years. In order to be one of the best professional amateur clubs in the country, we need to be
the best we can be in every facet and we need
to continue to improve. Today, our clubhouse looks great following our refurbishment, but on a Saturday with two homes teams it’s manic, with three it’s hell! On a Sunday when the minis are playing a tournament at home it’s manic, add two junior matches, etc.
In the past two years, we have added an U6 team, added a Vets side and we are now developing girls and women’s rugby at the club. The rst 6 weeks of this season we could have elded 4 senior Saturday sides plus the Colts. The AGP will bring other clubs, schools, societies and more people playing more rugby to the club.
The plans you see here on the ground oor add 2 new RFU standard changing rooms that support girls and women’s rugby. Upstairs we have added an extension but most importantly, the main room will now extend out to the extremes of the current roof line but at full height and after we have removed the of ce,
NORTH WEST ELEVATION
the store room, the eves and the stairs, we have effectively doubled the size of the main room. To compliment this will be windows around the side and we will extend the balcony along the front and take it out by about a further three metres leaving space for tables and chairs where appropriate. We have added above the changing rooms a new of ce, store room and a large meeting/reception room. This will allow us to open this part of the club without opening the entire bar area.
Finally, we are looking at adding more car parking spaces around the side as well as
a multi-purpose Chameleon Gym.
We are also applying for permission to erect a 100 seater stand.
That is the good news. It’s going to be a long process and our goal is to complete all by our centenary so we can host our Centenary Dinner in the club seating over 200 people. Oh, and in case you are wondering, yes the whole project is about £300,000 give or take.
So, now you know the goal and the work starts NOW! ‘We’ have to start raising money if we want this dream to be a reality. Some say we should not go so big, I say it’s better to fail aiming high than to succeed aiming low. So, every time you pull on a shirt, every time you walk in a changing room, every time you watch your team play,
ask yourself this, “what can I do to help us all achieve our dream?”

RUGBY CODES
RFU CODE OF RUGBY
Everyone involved in rugby in England, whether as a player, coach, referee, administrator, parent or spectator is expected to uphold the Core Values of our sport.
TEAMWORK • RESPECT • ENJOYMENT • DISCIPLINE • SPORTSMANSHIP
Play to win - but not at all cost.
Win with dignity, lose with grace.
Observe the Laws and regulations of the game. Respect opponents, referees and all participants. Reject cheating, racism, violence and drugs. Value volunteers and paid of cials alike.
Enjoy the game.
CLUB CODE OF RUGBY
The subject of ‘Abuse of Match Of cials’ has been raised at County level with a plea to all clubs in the area to ensure
abuse does not take place. Our Hon. Secretary has signed and returned the ‘code of conduct’ to the RFU on behalf of our club committing Billingham RUFC to this initiative. Abuse is de ned in the RFU handbook as;- verbal or physical assault, intimidatory conduct, racial or sexual harassment. The rules state that
a person...
“Shall not abuse, threaten or intimidate a referee, touch judge or other match of cial whether on or off the eld of play”.
Also
“shall not use crude or abusive language or gestures towards a referee, touch judge or other match of cials or spectators”.
The game cannot exist without the commitment and participation of the referee and other of cials, I’m sure you all understand how dif cult this task is and will endeavour not to make his/her life more dif cult than necessary.
I am sure you will join me in ensuring abuse does not take place at Billingham and we create an environment that is pleasant for players, spectators and match of cials.
Thank you all, enjoy the game!!
