Message from
the Chairman
Happy Saturday everyone. I don’t know about you, but Saturdays are starting to feel like Saturdays again.
There is a chill in the air and that buzz of excitement as you wake up in the morning, knowing it’s match day. Whilst I may no longer play and only get to watch, the feeling doesn’t go away, and today, on Ex-Players day, I suspect this will resonate with many.
Welcome also to today’s visitors, Doncaster Phoenix, who, in a similar manner to ourselves, have had a solid start to the season but not a 100% start. It’s been a few years since we last played each other and clubs change, squads change and therefore todays match will not be about the past but purely about the 80 minutes.
It’s a strange league this year following the RFU re-structure. On one hand we have lots of teams we have never played, some like Phoenix we haven’t played for a while but because of the restructure, there are some that are going to really struggle this year. If you look at the league position today,
MARK ARMSTRONG
CLUB CHAIRMAN
I don’t think it tells you anything about who is going to be a front runner come March. The difference in standard amongst the teams is wider than usual and until we have completed the first 7-8 matches, maybe even the first half of the season, its going to be hard to determine. I think we have our view on who will be in the top two come March but then again, I suspect so do Phoenix and one thing today’s match will do for us both will be to help re-enforce or reset.
At our last home match, we opened our new downstairs bar, and I was delighted to be served the first pint. There has been much debate about what beers should be on sale, but sometimes you can overcomplicate things, all I know is we went through more than a keg of San Miguel (no surprise there) on our first day. Over the coming weeks as we refine the facility, we will be adding soft drinks, teas, coffees and food for purchase. A couple of weeks ago we opened the facility on a Sunday morning, and had to go out and buy more buns; bacon and sausage sandwiches were very welcome and we sold a record amount. Its new but its still early days and feedback is welcome.

We have an issue with Plastic glasses that I would like to make everyone aware of. First of all, we cannot serve drinks in glass to be consumed inside the ground and therefore we have to use plastic.
Some people seem to be unaware of this, but bringing glass inside the ground is a major hazard and I politely ask you to not do this. If this continues we will have to implement a zero tolerance policy and will move to plastics from 30 mins before the game until after the match. At the same time, we have moved from disposable glasses to greener, more sustainable, re-usable plastic cups. Unfortunately, these cups are not cheap and therefore, as with many sporting facilities, we now charge £1 for your first cup and you get this back when you return it. The issue that is arising is that children are collecting these cups and
9 2 4 1 E D I S H E S T A B L
Going forward, only adults will be able to return cups and we will use judgement in whether these were purchased by the adult(s) who return them. I politely ask you for your support in this matter.
I spent the last couple of weeks taking a look at our next generation of talent on a Sunday morning and there is a real buzz around the club on a Sunday, and real strength in numbers. We are in our 100th year heading towards our centenary and our the future is bright, the future is green.
#OSIOS
retuning them on mass. Unfortunately, this is leading to some children asking if they can have your cup which tantamount to begging, and worse, some are collecting them without asking permission. This has to stop.
We are a not-for-profit club and if cups are not returned by the purchaser, then the club benefits, you benefit and we can improve our facilities further. If you purchase a cup and don’t want the £1 back, please just drop it at the bar (upstairs or downstairs) and we thank you for your donation.

Senior Coach Update
It’s a warm (hopefully dry) welcome to the
 ex-players sponsoring today’s game.
1 9 2 4 S H E D T A B L I E S
No doubt tales of past and “when we played” will be echoed thought the bar today. It is normally a great day and we have had some cracking games on this particular sponsor day.
We needed a bit of a statement and a solid performance last week and for probably 60 minutes we got it. We opened up eventually and played some good stuff but as always there’s plenty to improve on and we have highlighted a few areas of focus this week. Some impressive shifts from some lads.
It will need to be improved this week, it is a step up and we are playing an established level 5 team in Doncaster Phoenix whom we haven’t played for a number of years due to their transfers to the midlands leagues. They travel on the back of a close home loss to York, who have had a tough start but will be a top 4 team in my opinion. So we are expecting a tough outing against what seems a well drilled/organised team who have a solid set piece.
PETER EVANS SENIOR COACH
We have a strong squad to select form but are hampered by injuries and work already. 3 broken bones in the last 3 week and 3 shift workers down today. That said we welcome a few back from missing last week and the Lions have some familiar names retuning to the fold in recently married Mr Whinn and injured Mr Sunley. A much needed rest week on the horizon but a massive win needed prior.
We have a young but talented squad going up to Blaydon where we must fancy our chances. It’s a good mix of players and that core remains which is so important. The 3TM are feeling the knock on effects of injuries but currently travel to Hartlepool with a very young looking squad.
It’s a big weekend, if we want to push on and achieve good things days like these need dealing with.

Colts
Grow your own strategy.
Billingham have had some success in developing and retaining players coming through our Youth section over recent years.
Just check out the Billingham team today and most will have come through our Youth teams.
This is repeated in all our Senior teams, even the Vets, and this is something we are very proud of.
The key to this success is our Colts
team who focus on the integration of
our Junior players into our Senior Club section whilst training, playing and socialising. This is achieved through

a number of measures, which we are sharing with other Clubs as good practice.
9 2 4 L I S H E D 1 E S T A B
One important part of this strategy in how we introduce young players to senior rugby is our team hierarchy. We put our Colts directly after our first team, this means we never take Colts to a senior team unless they don't have a Colts game. The only exception is First XV rugby. However, this is only if the Club and the player feel they are ready and that it is the right time and game for the player.
We do not use the Colts to make up numbers, we play them to develop their rugby. With regard to the First XV we encourage young players that if they are good enough they will be selected.
Debut games at senior level for our Colts is therefore a very important milestone for both player and Club.

Quiz: Who am I? Can you tackle these 23 tricky
(and some not so tricky) questions?
Since becoming a senior I have made 23 1st XV scoring 5 points 1 however due to studying and now joining the Navy my appearances have been stuttered. Who am I?
I played 1st team for many
2
seasons until the bright lights of Horden came calling. However the lure of playing for Billingham saw me return making 164 appearances scoring 180 points. Who am I?
You can call me when you’re in trouble however I may not be able to help. I made 59 appearances scoring 2 tries. Who am I?
2 4 D 1 9 L I S H E E S T A B
I currently have been playing my 9
trade for the 3TM. Earlier in my career I made 19 first XV appearances on the wing scoring 4 tries. Who am i?
I scored the winning try on Billingham’s first ever ex players 10
day. I've made 35 first XV appearances and have scored 6 tries. who am i?
I started Billingham as a youngster and played right the 11
way through until I had season at Middlesbrough. I returned to Billingham in my mid 20s after a spell living away. I am fortunate to have played a number of games with my youngest brother however injuries prevented me continuing to play. You can find me continuing to coach one of the youth teams. Who am I?
I previously played for
12
Middlesbrough as a junior before I joined the infamous Colts team. There, my rugby really took off to a whole new level making appearances for DMP along the way. I made 18 first XV appearances scoring 85 points along the way.-
I came to Billingham to test myself 13
in a new environment. Before a brush with the law I made 20 first XV appearances scoring 1 try. I have since retired from playing, then played again and then retired. Who am I?
I broke into the first XV in 2018 and made 24 appearances scoring 27 14
points. This would be my last season for Billingham before moving away. Ive since come back and made 4 appearances Who am I?
3
I am famous for my goose step but I never always got to show it off. I 4
was know for my scrummaging and often had many opponent 'in my pocket'. I made 172 appearances scoring 4 tries. Who am I?.
I hail from South Africa, played for 5
the Sharks as well as DMP along the way. I made 12 first XV appearances scoring 2 penalty kicks. Who am I?
A lineout guru who loved the physical side of the game. Some 6
say I Loved to pick up a yellow card. I Made 334 appearances scoring 6 tries. Who am I?

I took over AJ as the next protege. I like a good wrestle. I made 132 appearances to date scoring 5 tries. Who am i?
I scored a memorable try whilst a colt, I've played for England, I've made 56 appearances and scored 220 points so far. Who am I?

I can play across the backline and 15
played through juniors. After some impressive performances I was given my first XV debut. Due to tough competition I only made 37 appearances scoring 80 points. I can be seen playing for the Billingham Bounty Hunters in the 7s comps each year but if not there you can find me fire breathing. Who am i?
I have made 12 first XV
16
appearances in the front row before injury retired me. I swiftly went in to coaching where I coached through the age groups into Colts before also becoming County coach. Who am I?
I broke into the first XV and played 17
in centres and on the wing. I played just 5 times including being a county cup winner. I scored 3 tries in those 5 appearances. University called me where I signed for a local team playing National 2. Who am i?
Hartlepool born and bred but wanted to challenge myself and 18 came to Billingham. I played 100 times for Billingham 1st XV scoring 7 tries. I scored 2 tries on debut. The lure of coaching my previous club took me away from Billingham but it still holds a place in my heart. Who am I?
Once a winger but turned back 19
row. I like to think my performances were electric. I played 255 times and scored 480 points. 2019 saw me become an official HIPPO. Who am i?
I have been at Billingham throughout my career. I like to be 20
known for my fizz like passing. My family are rumoured to have Asian roots however this is yet to be proved. I have made 164 appearances and have scored 275 points. Who am I?
I am the middle brother of a 21
talented rugby family. I have been fortunate to play at a higher level. I like to play the game with speed and physicality. Unfortunately work has limited my appearances to 52 scoring 13 tries. Who am i?
I am noted for being quiet but have a tenacious bite about me 22
on the pitch. I got told I wasn’t good enough to play in the D+N leagues before coming to Billingham. Who am I?
I didn’t start my career at 23
Billingham but came over from Acklam. In doing so I have amassed 230 appearances scoring 70 points in the process. Who am I?

Club Code of Rugby
The subject of ‘Abuse of Match Officials’ has been raised at County level with a plea to all clubs in the area to ensure abuse does not take place. Our Hon. Secretary has signed and returned the ‘code of conduct’ to the RFU on behalf
of our club committing Billingham RUFC to this initiative. Abuse is defined in the RFU handbook as;- verbal or physical assault, intimidatory conduct, racial or sexual harassment. The rules state that
 a person...
“Shall not abuse, threaten or intimidate a referee, touch judge or other match official whether on or off the field of play”.
Also
“shall not use crude or abusive language or gestures towards a referee, touch judge or other match officials or spectators”.
The game cannot exist without the commitment and participation of the referee and other officials, I’m sure you
all understand how difficult this task is and will endeavour not to make his/her
 life more difficult than necessary.
I am sure you will join me in ensuring abuse does not take place at Billingham and we create an environment that is pleasant for players, spectators and match officials.
