Club President’s Welcome
Happy New Season!
How exciting that at long last we can look forward to actual, real life RUGBY.
I haven’t got over the curtailment of the season before last (can it really be that long ago?) when whatever algorithm the RFU used, decided that we would finish the season in 5th place. No way, I thought at the time and I still feel aggrieved about it.
Anyway good luck to Harrogate and Blaydon, we’ll be pleased to welcome them back into the Northern Premier League if the case arises.
To this coming season, of course, we do welcome back Preston Grasshoppers and Burnage who in various seasons have played in our league and we give our usual Billingham welcome to Northwich, Otley and York.
JOHN KER
CLUB PRESIDENT
Although we have played York in previous years, I don’t remember it being at our current level. Correct me if I’m wrong but I won’t be buying you a pint.
Financially the club, as most others in rugby and many other sports, have been through a couple of lean years but thanks to the diligent workings of our fiscal wizards and the other committees we have survived to face another season. The massive crowd for our recent friendly, warm-up game against Tynedale is evidence of Billingham Rugby Club’s thirst for games to watch. I don’t use that word lightly as we need that thirst to be taken into the bar, before, during (well, halftime) and especially after all matches as we need to hear the tills ringing as we recoup our losses. Do tills actually still ring these days or is that only in a certain shop on TV? Anyway, you know what I mean.
Welcome back to rugby one and all and let’s see if Billingham can go unbeaten before Christmas. We’ve done it before so let’s give it our best for repeat performances although I do appreciate that the other clubs will be doing their level best to ensure that doesn’t happen.

Message from
 the Chairman
I would like to start by welcoming Sandal
back to Greenwood Road and we look
forward to what is always a fiercely
contested match between our two sides.
This week’s programme entry is written with mixed emotions.
It has been an ‘up and down’ few weeks and of course our recent run of form is a main contributor. Playing Otley and Macclesfield away and Preston at home were never going to be easy matches, in fact as we have learned over the years, there are no easy matches in this league, but these were particularly difficult. Added to this is our ever increasing injury list which last week was into the 20s does not help. Today is all about stopping that run and getting back to winning ways. Nothing can be taken for granted, but if we can’t do it at home, in front of what will hopefully be a decent crowd, then...
I am also frustrated with the narrow minded views of many of the Chairs in other clubs across the County who on Tuesday voted to block the entry of lower XV (2nd XV, 3rd XV etc) into lower leagues. Our plan was to enter our 2nd XV into D&N 3 or D&N 2 and ensure
MARK ARMSTRONG
CLUB CHAIRMAN
competitive rugby week in week out within an existing league framework.
This is the solution proposed by the RFU to ensure lower XV rugby remains competitive. Without a strong 2nd XV league, our 1st XV is weakened, we will lose players to other clubs or worst of all, we will lose players from the sport. The lower league clubs will continue to complain about lack of competition and the County as a whole and rugby in general will be the loser. My only wish was that the RFU did not leave this to the local CBs and their members. Now we need to find a plan B.
On the positive side, I am grateful to the Wellie Gang, a group of Billingham RUFC supporters who are known to occasionally frequent the Wellie in Wolviston. In particular a big thanks to Moggie aka Ian McLoughlin and Steve Hart who have co-ordinated todays fund

raising for us. This weekend is part of our ongoing Fundraising effort and we would like to thank them for their kind donations this weekend in support of our Development Project.
If you would like to know what our fundraising is for, then you can check out our newly re-furbished toilets upstairs and in particular the Ladies which is special and we have a final touch for the Mens to follow in the coming weeks Big thanks goes to Jimmy Sanderson for managing the project.
Jimmy was instrumental in making this happen from the tendering process, the selection, negotiation and the final contracting as well over-seeing the works. I would also like to thank our House Officer, Keith, for the finishing touches and ensuring that all the electrics work.
I can also confirm that on Monday 7th March, we start the development of the first phase of our club extension, starting with our new outdoor food and drinks outlet downstairs at the front of the club.
Unfortunately I also have to finish on a sad note. John Hobro, wife of Sylvia, who’s bench is at the front of the club, sadly passed away this week. John was recently diagnosed with liver cancer and was taken very quickly. I understand he was with his daughter and family at the time. John and Sylvia both, were two wonderful and committed supporters of our club and John’s passing came as a shock to many of us. To be honest, John looked a little lost without Sylvia and at least they will now be back with each other and I have no doubt they will be cheering us on together today. John RIP and send our love to Sylvia.
No final rallying cry from me. Today is Saturday, a rugby day and this week in particular for the reasons above, it’s a Billingham club day. When we need our club to stand together we always do and I have faith in the 18 picked today to stand tall and bring home the W.
OSIOS. Mark.
This will provide much needed refreshment to those watching rugby.
The initial project will take approximately 6 weeks and then a few more weeks as we complete the upgrade to the front of the club and the new outdoor hospitality area. So, all in all, a lot going on and a lot more to come.

Senior Coach Update
Back at home and hopefully out
of the way of the current storm.
It’s been a tricky few weeks for the lads. As with every rugby club you have patches or periods of troubles. It’s how you stick together and come out of the other end.
I’ve spoken in detail about where I think we can improve on but last week. I can’t fault the effort of the of team which pushed Macclesfield in tough conditions and some quite perplex decisions.
Given the effort put in we have again been forced into changes this week. Fortunately some great players are back in the mix.
Today’s opponents are well known to us after many years of playing each other.
It hasn’t been the dizzy heights of pushing promotion but a rebuilding season with some very talented young players coming in and given a season to bed in.
We wont take anything for granted as Sandals recent results have been very close and they have pushed some teams closer than we have over the last few weeks. Let’s hope for a dry, non-blustery day where both teams can play some entertaining rugby.
PETER EVANS
SENIOR COACH
The 3rd XV entertain a strong university side looking to progress in the county cup. No doubt this will be a tough game but one we face head on and give it our all. Nothing to lose and time to enjoy ourselves. Not sure how many other 3rd teams in the area would entertain the best university side in the country’s third team.
Unfortunately the county have decided to vote against lower XV’s entering the league structure. This is a frustrating decision for me as we search for regular playing time for our 2nd team. We are having a rethink about how we approach next season.
Let’s hope for a positive weekend with both teams at home and hopefully enjoying our rugby with some wins.

Colts
Grow your own strategy.
Billingham have had some success in developing and retaining players coming through our Youth section over recent years.
Just check out the Billingham team today and most will have come through our Youth teams.
This is repeated in all our Senior teams, even the Vets, and this is something we are very proud of.
The key to this success is our Colts
team who focus on the integration of
our Junior players into our Senior Club section whilst training, playing and socialising. This is achieved through

a number of measures, which we are sharing with other Clubs as good practice.
One important part of this strategy in how we introduce young players to senior rugby is our team hierarchy. We put our Colts directly after our first team, this means we never take Colts to a senior team unless they don't have a Colts game. The only exception is First XV rugby. However, this is only if the Club and the player feel they are ready and that it is the right time and game for the player.
We do not use the Colts to make up numbers, we play them to develop their rugby. With regard to the First XV we encourage young players that if they are good enough they will be selected.
Debut games at senior level for our Colts is therefore a very important milestone for both player and Club.

The Rugby Codes
RFU Code of Rugby
Everyone involved in rugby in England, whether as a player, coach, referee, administrator, parent or spectator is expected to uphold the Core Values of
 our sport.
Teamwork
Respect
Enjoyment
Discipline
Sportsmanship
Play to win - but not at all cost. Win with dignity, lose with grace.
Observe the Laws and regulations
 of the game.
Respect opponents, referees and
 all participants.
Reject cheating, racism, violence
 and drugs.
Value volunteers and paid officials alike. Enjoy the game.
Club Code of Rugby
The subject of ‘Abuse of Match Officials’ has been raised at County level with a plea to all clubs in the area to ensure abuse does not take place. Our Hon. Secretary has signed and returned the ‘code of conduct’ to the RFU on behalf
of our club committing Billingham RUFC to this initiative. Abuse is defined in the RFU handbook as;- verbal or physical assault, intimidatory conduct, racial or sexual harassment. The rules state that
 a person...
“Shall not abuse, threaten or intimidate a referee, touch judge or other match official whether on or off the field of play”.
Also
“shall not use crude or abusive language or gestures towards a referee, touch judge or other match officials or spectators”.
The game cannot exist without the commitment and participation of the referee and other officials, I’m sure you
all understand how difficult this task is and will endeavour not to make his/her
 life more difficult than necessary.
I am sure you will join me in ensuring abuse does not take place at Billingham and we create an environment that is pleasant for players, spectators and match officials.
