The speaking test is taken by all Form 5 students and constitutes 25% on their overall grade. The test is paired format - 2 candidates take the test together. The duration of the test is approximately 13 minutes. 3 parts Phase 1 (General Questions) Phase 2 (Background & Daily routine) Individual Response Individual Long Turn Discussion


Part 1 (Individual Response) – Phase 1 (General Questions) QUESTIONS ON YOUR BACKGROUND / BIODATA QUESTIONS RESPONSES Good morning/afternoon/evening. Good morning/afternoon/evening, teacher/sir/ ma’am/teacher. What’s your name? My name is… and you can call me.. I am… and you can call me… Where do you live? Where do you come from? Part 1 (Individual Response) – Phase 2 (Daily Routine) • Candidates answer individual everyday questions – background & daily routine. QUESTIONS ON YOUR DAILY ROUTINE – THINGS THAT YOU ALWAYS DO QUESTIONS RESPONSES What do you normally do after you wake up? Part 2 (Individual Long-turn) • Individual long turn with a listening candidate response question. • Candidate A talk about the topic, Candidate B listens then answer HOTS question. • After that, Candidate B will talk about another topic, Candidate A listens then answer HOTS question. • You only have 20 seconds to prepare – no writing down notes allowed! • Cannot bring any paper • Organise your points properly – follow the points given. HELPFUL TIPS FOR PART 2 • Look at the sentence used – past tense or present tense? • Must talk about ALL the points – follow the sequence • For a point that use ‘why?’, you must use because to provide reason(s) Example: If you enjoyed yourself (why/why not?) Repeat the sentence and use I / my / myself I enjoyed myself because . . . • Better to use sequence connectors/cohesive devices - First, - After that, / Moreover, / Then, / Next, - Lastly / Finally, • End your talking with That’s all, teacher. Technology in education Talk about the use of technology in education in recent times. You should say: • What technology is used • How the technology improves learning • What the drawbacks of the technology are • If the technology is suitable for all students (why/why not?) Environmental pollution Talk about one type of environmental pollution. You should say: • What causes this environmental pollution • What effects this environmental pollution has • Who should be held responsible • If current efforts to solve the pollution are working (why/why not?)


Shopping Talk about your shopping experience. You should say: • Where you normally shop • Who you shop with • If you enjoy it (why/why not?) • Why shopping is a popular activity Your favourite movie Talk about your favourite movie You should say: • What title of the movie is • What you like about the movie • The lessons found in the movie • Why movies are important to society A memorable book Talk about a memorable book you read You should say: • What the title is • What is it about • How you felt when you read it • If you would recommend others to read it (why/why not) Best birthday present Talk about the best birthday present you ever received You should say: • What the present was • Why it was special • Who gave you the present • If you like to receive a present (why/why not) A best friend Talk about your best friend You should say: • What your best friend looks like • How you met • What you have in common • What activities you do together


Part 2 (Individual Long-Turn): Sample (Candidate A) Talk about a family holiday you had recently. • Where you went First, I went to… - Genting Highlands. It’s located in Pahang. • What you did there After that, my siblings/family and I (did). . . . . . - rode gondola at Awana SkyWay to go to Genting SkyWorlds. - We had the best moments there as we got to see breath-taking view on the top of the hills while enjoying cold breeze. • If you enjoyed yourself (why / why not?) Then, I also enjoyed myself because . . . . . . . . . . . (You can give 2 reasons if you want) - I finally got to release my stress due to online learning for almost a year. - Besides, I had the chance to experience snowfall at Genting Winter Wonderland although it’s just man-made snow. • Why family holidays are important Lastly, I think that/ In my opinion, family holidays are important because . . . . . . . . . . . . . (You can give 2 reasons if you want) - we were able to strengthen the bond with my family members especially my parents who were always busy with their work. - Moreover, we get to explore new attractions and places in this country. Part 3 (Discussion) ✓ You must be able to talk about the topic assigned with your partner. ✓ You must listen attentively to your partner’s ideas so that you can keep the turn – taking in the conversation going by adding more ideas to what has been said by your partner. ✓ You must use all the information given to keep the conversation alive and ongoing. Interlocutor: Now, I’d like you to talk about something together for about three minutes. The task will have two parts. In the first part, you will discuss something with each other for about two minutes. Then, in the second part, you will have another minute to make a decision together. All right? Let’s begin with the discussion task. It is important to manage your stress well. Here are some ways for students to manage their stress and a question for you to discuss. First, you have some time to look at the task.
