MTC will remain vigilant and sensitive to the policy
and market changes globally while continuing to
promote the sustainable values of Malaysian timber.
Moving forward, it will continue its efforts to
educate consumers the world over on the value of
Malaysian timber as renewable and sustainable
resources as it becomes an increasingly popular
material among sustainability leaders and green
constructions. More timber buildings are also
being built around the world and recent studies have
found that timber-framed buildings have a lower
emission throughout its life cycle emissions, and
when sequestration is included, the benefit can be
more significant. MT is proud to proclaim that
the timber facade of the Malaysian Pavilion is
constructed with sustainable Malaysian Meranti
timber which is P certified. As such, wider
application of timber can be explored, not only to
meet SD goals, but also ta ing into consideration
the welfare of the future generations.

Kenaf Industry
The National Kenaf and Tobacco Board (NKTB) was established
on 1 April 2010 through the enforcement of the National Kenaf
and Tobacco Board Act 2009 [Act 692].
The main objective of this board is to develop and strengthen the kenaf
industry in Malaysia in line with kenaf industry development policy. In
addition, NKTB is also responsible for regulating the tobacco industry
in Malaysia in accordance with the provisions as mentioned in the Act.
62 Growth Through Sustainability
VISION
Pioneer in Kenaf and tobacco
based industry.
MISSION
To build and advance the
industry of Kenaf based
products, as well as regulating
the industry of tobacco, with
the purpose of generating the
country’s economy.
OBJECTIVES
• To promote and develop the
kenaf industry;
• To establish national

priorities for the orderly
Although relatively new, the Government has put in place various
incentives to further promote the industry, in particular of kenaf development and
cultivation among local farmers. Kenaf planting is heavily promoted by
the Government as an alternative crop for local farmers and to ensure administration of the kenaf

USING TECHNOLOGY TO FUEL THE INDUSTRY
Enhancing The Value Chain Via Technology
And Innovation
While the National Commodity Policy emphasises
on kenaf development in Malaysia as a sustainable
raw materials, technology is being deployed to
resolve processing, storage and logistics issues. The
initiatives are developed to enhance the value chain
and create demand for kenaf-based products for
both domestic and international market.
An example is the production of non-woven fibre,
widely used as raw materials to produce other
fibre-based product such as insulator, automotive
components etc. With this method, it is expected
that production is able to generate 2,400 tonnes of
non-woven fibre worth RM 18 million/per year.
Kenaf Processing Centre
The Kenaf Processing Centre was set up to overcome
the issue of unprocessed raw material and storage
and to develop entrepreneurs to venture into the
field of kenaf processing (midstream level). With
this in place, kenaf entrepreneurs would be able to
generate earnings of at least RM3 million per year
with a processing capacity of 6,000 tonnes of kenaf
stem.
64 Growth Through Sustainability
Integrated Kenaf Industrial Park
The Integrated Kenaf Industrial Park is developed as a
complete industrial development (from cultivation to
production) project. It also consists of an integrated
system with cultivation area as well as processing
facilities/infrastructure provided by NKTB at the
midstream level and downstream sector.
Kenaf Research And Development (R&D) Fund
Kenaf’s R & D Fund is a grant provided by the
National Kenaf and Tobacco Board to carry out
kenaf-based research and development projects that
can contribute to the discovery of new ideas in the
kenaf industry. The R&D Fund is open to research
agencies, institutions of higher learnings, private
companies and other agencies to support research
related to kenaf or kenaf-based product innovation
for commercialisation, technological development
and new discoveries in cultivation, harvesting and
processing.
PUSHING AHEAD TO MEET GROWING
MARKET DEMAND
The kenaf industry has come a long way since it was
first introduced as an alternative crop to tobacco
in 2005. Despite some challenges along the way,
kenaf cultivation has expanded as demand for
fibre continues to grow in importance globally in
various industrial sectors because of its sustainable
values. Moving forward, the Government will further
strengthen the kenaf industry and develop other
plant fibre-based industries as one of the sustainable
sources of raw materials in line with policies set by
the Government and international organisations.

PPMarelaoypsmipanePoerptpiTenroBgoTarMdh: ealWayosriladn
Recognising the significant contribution of the pepper industry
to the country’s economy, the Malaysian government has drawn
up further initiatives for the growth of the industry by setting up
the Malaysian Pepper Board (MPB).
On 1st January 2007, the Malaysian Pepper Board (MPB) was established
as a federal statutory body under the Ministry Of Plantation Industries
& Commodities and governed by the Malaysian Pepper Board Act 2006.
MPB is responsible for the development of the Malaysian pepper
industry in areas of production, marketing and research.
The Malaysian Pepper Board has three strategic goals:
• To increase pepper production and income of pepper planters
• To strengthen pepper productivity and competitiveness
• To ensure sustainability of the pepper industry
MPB Objectives
• To promote the planting of pepper
• To develop and promote the pepper industry
• To promote the research on pepper, pepper products and the
pepper industry
• To develop national objectives, policies and priorities for the orderly
development and administration of the pepper industry of Malaysia
• To regulate the pepper industry except the planting of and research
on pepper.
Moving forward, subjected to economic uncertainties affecting the
world which could prove challenging on the sustainability of the pepper
industry in this region, MPB will help the industry chart new growth and
marketing strategies for the pepper commodity. The new directions
among others will focus on R&D, rebranding, digital marketing and
development of small to medium sized entrepreneurs (SMEs).
68 Growth Through Sustainability
Vision
To be the leading
organisation in
sustainable pepper
industry for the nation’s
prosperity.
Mission
Implementing innovative
programmes in ensuring
sustainability of the
nation’s pepper industry.
PLACING SUSTAINABILITY AT THE CORE OF OUR TRADE
Realising the importance of good business and operational practices,
MPB has taken the lead in ensuring sustainable production and
consumption across the value chain with the objective of achieving
quality pepper production, ensuring better farming practices and
creating a more conducive business and farming environment.
Adoption of Technology
• Encourages technology adoption to improve productivity
• Strengthens advisory and extension services to smallholdings for
adoption of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)
• Collaborates with training institutes
Value Creation
• Advancing small business growth in downstream segment
• Intensifying R&D to explore potential use of pepper
• Encouraging local consumption of pepper
Market Development
• Enhances trade facilitation to penetrate into new markets and
expanding existing markets
• Continuous marketing and promotion of high value pepper and
pepper-based products
Inclusivity
• Implements dedicated programs to develop pepper agripreneurs
• Facilitates partnerships between pepper producers and industry
players
