Birth of Muhammad (SAW) 571 C.E. 1000 C.E. 2000 Name: Year of birth: Dear Muslim child, close your eyes and imagine life 1400 years ago in the desert of Ara- bia. Life at that time was very different, with no internet, phones, television, not even refrigerators, nor cars, not even bicycles! The houses were made of materials found in nature like mud, dry grass, water, and palm leaves. If people needed to travel, they had to walk with their own feet or ride an animal. They either grew their own food or bought food at outdoor markets. There were no grocery stores stocked with frozen foods, packaged breads nor chocolate treats. Our Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was born during this time in the desert. In Makkah, a city in what we now call The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Would you like to live at the time? Why or Why not? What would you like and what wouldn’t you like if you lived at that time? Dear Muslim child, did you know Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was the great, great, great, great... grandchild of Prophet Ibrahim Alayhi As-Salaam? Let us learn a little bit about the Prophet Muhammad’s sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam family connections. Ibrahim Alayhi As-Salaam was ordered by Allah to leave his wife Hajar in the desert near two mountains, Safa and Marwa. He left her alone with their baby son, Ishmael. It was a difficult test for her. There were no stores or people around, but she trusted Allah. Without a food or a water source to nourish herself or her son Ishmael Alayhi As-Salaam. They quickly ran out of water and Ishmael Alayhi As-Salaam began to cry from thirst and hunger. Hajar ran to Mount Safa climbing up in the hot sun looking for any sign of travellers or a water source. She saw nothing so she ran to Mount Marwa and climbed to the top looking desperately for any help. She ran back and forth seven times each time desperately hoping for help to feed her baby and herself. Dear Muslim child how do you think Hajar felt running back and forth looking for water? Suddenly, from below Ishmail’s feet a water spring began to gush. Allah had gifted Hajar and Ishmael AS water. This water well still runs today with the blessed water of Zamzam. Zamzam water is a blessing and mercy from Allah not only for Hajar and Ishmael but even us. Given the chance to drink Zamzam water dear Muslim child, make dua’ and drink. The new source of water brought people to the area who settled, building houses forming a city. Hajar and Ishmael Alayhi As-Salaam were no longer alone. Prophet Ibrahim AS would come and visit his family. When Ishmael grew up, Ibrahim Alayhi As-Salaam was ordered to build the Kaaba with Ishmael Alayhi As-Salaam who was also a prophet. Our Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was born in Makkah in the Year of the Elephant. Allah tells us the story of the Elephant in the Quran. His father, Abdullah died before he was born. His mother’s name was Aminah. Aminah sent baby Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam to live in the desert with a wet nurse named Halimah. Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam went to live healthier in the clean desert air and learn good Arabic. Halimah’s family was poor. Her baby was hungry. Her animals were weak because her plants were not getting enough water. After she took baby Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam to nurse and care for him, her life was greatly improved! His mother took him on a journey to Yathrib (Madinah) to visit family. Just like you dear Muslim child may, go and visit your family in other places. On the way back to Makkah, his mother, Aminah became sick and died. His grandfather, Abdul-Muttalib cared for Muhammad for two years, then he also died. Lesson 9 Al Ameen, The Trustworthy Before Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam became a prophet, a great flood broke the walls of the Kaaba. The people of Makkah rebuilt the Kaaba, dividing the work among the family tribes. The work was going well until it came time to place the Black Stone in its proper place. Everyone wanted to do it because of the great importance of the Black Stone. The arguing continued for four or five days, with people getting angrier and angrier they were threatening to fight with swords. It was suggested that the next person to enter would decide. By the will of Allah, the next person to enter was Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Everyone was very happy because he was known as Al-Ameen (the trustworthy). With great wisdom Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam spread a cloth on the ground and placed the stone in the middle. One representative from each tribe helped lift the cloth to the proper location where Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam placed it with his own two hands. By having all the tribes cooperate Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam stopped the fighting. When we all cooperate and work together, we have peace, and we can all feel good. It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The Black Stone came down from Paradise.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 877; al-Nasaa’i, 2935. The hadeeth was classed as saheeh by al-Tirmidhi). Have a look at the pictures below: Put a big check mark on the picture showing cooperation. Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam obeyed Allah and began openly calling people to the One true god, Allah. One day he stood on Mount As-Safa loudly calling the people of Makkah to listen to his important message. He asked the people if they would believe him if he told them an army was coming to destroy them . The people said, “Yes you are Al-Ameen the trustworthy.” The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “I warn of an even greater danger, rescue yourself from the fire by worshiping the One true god Allah”. The Prophet’s uncle, Abu Lahab made fun of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and told people not to listen to Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Lesson 16 Muslims in Makkah Once the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam started preaching openly many people began to accept Islam. To enter Islam people must make Shahadah. The Shahadah is the first pillar of Islam. We must believe in our hearts, say the Shahadah with our tongue and act on it by obeying Allah and His messenger sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. There is no god worthy of worship accept Allah Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam is the messenger of Allah. Many of the poor, slaves and weak people were among the first to accept Islam. The Quraysh did not like it at all. They began to torture the believers. The Quraysh insulted, beat, and dragged the believers over hot sand or hot coals. The believers remained firm in their belief. They did not give up Islam to protect themselves from the harm of the Quraysh. They knew Allah is Al-‘Azeez the Most Powerful. Allah gave strength to the Muslims of Makkah with two new Muslims. Two very well-known men from Quraysh became Muslim, Hamzah the Prophet’s Uncle and Umar bin Al-Khattab. The Muslims were growing in numbers and getting stronger. The disbelieving Quraysh became very worried. They did not want Islam to spread. Although the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam only taught people to worship Allah and treat other people well, be honest and trustworthy, just as we learn today. He sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam had enemies who did not want him to succeed. Just as we today have enemies who do not want to see Muslims succeed. There are many examples of how our beloved prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was mistreated. We will just learn about one, which was particularly hurtful to him and his daughter. Abu Jahl a big bully, was sitting with some of his friends, while Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was praying at the Kaaba. Abu Jahl encouraged one of his friends to put the guts of a camel on the back of the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam while in sujood. Imagine, dear Muslim child, how heavy and yucky camel guts would feel, if placed on your back! Abu Jahl and his friends started laughing at the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam remained in sujood until his daughter Fatimah came and removed the camel guts from the Prophet’s back. Lesson 18 A Ban The ban was meant to join against the Muslims. The disbelievers agreed with each other not to buy from, sell to, or mix with the Muslims to punish them and them to force a change. Rasulullah sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, his family and the Muslims were forced to live in a valley away from everyone. The ban was very difficult, they were not allowed to buy or sell anything. They soon ran out of food. They were very hungry. They ate leaves and cooked dry animal skin for soup. Many Muslims became sick. The children cried. Some of the Quraysh wanted to stop the ban because they felt sorry for the Muslims. Abu Jahl went to the Kaaba to show the people the written ban. He came out with a small paper with only the words Bismillah. The words of the ban had been eaten by small insects. The ban was lifted. Can you spot the 5 differences? Then on the back of Buraq, the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) flew to Paradise. In paradise Allah ordered the Muslims to pray five times a day. Allah, Ar-Rahman, Ar-Raheem gives us the reward for fifty prayers, when we pray only five times. When the Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam returned the next day and shared his experience, Muslims with strong faith believed but non-Muslims mocked him saying such travel was impossible. Let us think about some of the amazing creatures Allah has created in this world dear Muslim child. Monarch butterflies fly from Canada to Mexico with no map or GPS eating only milkweed. An earth worm can be cut and divided into separate new worms. Honeybees can communicate with specific movements to direct other bees to the best flowers. Beavers dig long underground canals they can travel through during winter even when the lakes freeze into ice. Sea turtles swim thousands of miles and can live for over hundred years. Is it hard to belief Allah created Buraq which travelled faster than lighting to take Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam on a spectacular journey? Not at all. Allah has so much Mercy and Generosity towards us. Every time we pray one obligatory salah He rewards for ten salat. When we pray our five daily salat we get reward for fifty prayers. Circle the number of prayers counted each time we pray. Fajr, Dhuhr, ‘Asr, Maghreb or ‘Isha © Um Yuunus Sadaqa Jariah 34 Hayya al Falah Come to Success Dear Muslim Child

Lesson 23 Hijra Allah ordered the Muslims to leave Makkah and migrate to Yathrib. It was not easy for many of the Muslims. They often had to leave behind family, their houses, their land, and wealth. When they arrived in Yahrib, they did not have homes or wealth. When the Prophet arrived, he changed the name of the city to Madinah. As the new leader of the city, he had to bring the Muhajirun from Makkah together with the new Muslims of Madinah. To strengthen their relationships and help the Muhajirun resettle the prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam paired one Muhajirun with one person from Madinah. The Muslims of Madinah became known as the Ansar, the Helpers. The Ansar shared their homes, farms, and wealth evenly by sharing half of what they owned with the Muhajirun allowing both groups to live well in obedience to Allah and prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. If this was an Ansar's property: Circle in blue how many coins would he share with a Muhajirun. Circle in red how many camels would he share with a Muhajirun.
