School Prospectus June 2022

1

Britannia Bridge Primary School is a true community
school, providing the very best for ‘each and every one’ of
our 2 to 11 year old children and their families. We have
recently moved into a new state of the art building, in the
heart of Lower Ince, within easy reach of Wigan Town
Centre.

The main school building opened in September 2016 and received a significant
additional investment in order to create additional facilities that include small and large
group rooms, a Community Hub, a Boardroom, Sensory Room and a new Nursery
Suite for our 2 year old children. The school benefits from extensive school grounds,
that are organised into excellent learning and play spaces.

From the moment our pupils begin their journey, they are encouraged to develop as
life-long learners through an excellent, enjoyable and challenging curriculum, which is
complimented by a wide variety of exciting experiences. Every child’s learning is
supported through a range of exceptional facilities and resources including two
purpose built Libraries (which are loved by all of our children), the latest technology, a
host of curriculum resources and a team of staff that are passionately committed to
supporting each and every one of our children.

Our distinctive core values of Happiness, Encouragement, Aspirations, Respect and
Teamwork, truly sit at the ‘HEART’ of everything we do.

Visitors to Britannia Bridge regularly comment on the warm and welcoming
atmosphere. We encourage our prospective parents to come and see our friendly and
caring school for themselves. We will take you into our exciting learning environments
and the children will talk to you about how much they enjoy their learning, experiences
and friendships.

We are extremely proud of our strong parent, school and community links. Our ‘Open
Door Policy’ encourages all our parents and carers to come into school at the
beginning of each day and enjoy a short activity alongside their child.

Our team of professional and friendly staff look forward to meeting you and are keen
to share how ‘each and everyone’ receives the very best that Britannia Bridge has to
offer.

We invite all prospective parents to visit and have a personal tour of the school.
Additionally, a wealth of further information for parents and families is available on our
website www.britanniabridge.co.uk or by contacting our school office.

We look forward to meeting you,

Carol Pidgeon-Duncalf
Headteacher

Admissions to the school for children entering our Reception Class (4/5yr olds)
to Year 6 (10/11yr olds) are organised by Wigan Council. All admissions to our
Nursery Classes are organised by ourselves - Britannia Bridge Primary School.

Each class, from Reception to Year 6, has a maximum number of 30 children.

Reception Admissions

Reception Class application forms are available, during the autumn and early
spring term, with placements being offered in the summer term, prior to
commencement in September. Prospective parents can apply online at
www.wigan.gov.uk/resident/education/schools/school-admissions/primary-
schools.aspx or contact the school office for a paper copy of the application
form. Completed application forms can be returned to our school office. We are
always happy to provide advice and support to parents and families.

income related benefits, a low income or your child is in receipt of disability

of free childcare per week.

Please call us or come into our
school office and we’ll help you
to complete the online form to
check whether you are eligible.
We will then help you to apply
for one of our 12 part time

our Ladybirds (2 year old
Nursery) class.

We also have limited availabilty of paid sessions. The fee is set in accordance
with Wigan Council’s agreed rate. This is currently set at £5.57* per hour /

5

Our Caterpillars Nursery Class (3 or 4 year olds) can accommodate a maximum
of 26 children at any one time, which equates to a maximum of 52 places
available in any one week.
*January 2022 hourly rate is subject to change. Please contact the school office to confirm the current rate.

We offer our Nursery children and their families a degree of flexibility to choose
when their child enjoys their free 15 hours per week. Families can request the
following options A to D. Option F for families choosing a full time option:

A – Mornings (Mon to Fri – 9am to 12pm)
B - Afternoons (Mon to Fri – 12.30pm to 3.30pm)
C - All day Monday (9am to 3.30pm), all day Tuesday (9am to 3.30pm) and
Wednesday morning (9am to 12pm).
D - Wednesday afternoon (12.30pm to 3.30pm), all day on Thursday (9am to
3pm) and all day on Friday (9am to 3pm).
F – Full Time (Mon to Fri – 9am to 3.30pm)

We will endeavour to accommodate each family’s preferred choice of sessions.
When initial preferences are unable to be accommodated, sessions will be
allocated on a needs basis.

We have organised the Nursery sessions to have the same start and/or finish
times as the rest of the school. If your child attends nursery on a full time
basis, or in the afternoon, then they will be receiving an additional 2.5hrs a
week completely free of charge.

Choosing a nursey or school to help your child to reach their full potential is no
easy decision to make. However, the team of staff at Britannia Bridge Primary
School and the facilities it has to offer lightens that load. We believe that this is
the best place to help your child to be happy and exceptionally well prepared
for school and beyond.

Mid-Year Admissions
We welcome new pupils into Britannia Bridge Primary School throughout the
academic year, from Reception to Y6. Prospective parents/carers can apply
via the Wigan Council Website or by completing an application form available

Curriculum

Britannia Bridge Primary School’s curriculum is designed to be truly ‘for each
and everyone.’ It is underpinned by our core H.E.A.R.T values of Happiness,
Encouragement, Aspirations, Respect and Teamwork. We aim to ensure that
all children will have the opportunity to be the best that they can be and enjoy
learning in a safe, caring and stimulating environment.

We believe that children should not only
reach their best academically, but also
develop as rounded, resilient
individuals, who are able to make their
own decisions about their actions and
the world around them. We support
children to develop the knowledge, skills
and understanding necessary to be able
to make informed choices about the
important things in their future, enabling
them to lead happy and rewarding lives.

Lessons are tailored to meet the needs of our learners, ensuring that those
children, that are meeting expectations, continue to meet them and those that
are behind are catching up rapidly.

Celebrating pupils’ achievements and providing clear next steps is an integral
part of each child’s learning process and forms the bedrock of the quality
teaching and learning, that our children enjoy.

Our school curriculum covers all of the statutory requirements outlined in the
National Curriculum and much more. Our new Knowledge Organisers provide
an at a glance overview of the essential knowledge we want our children to
know for each subject, by the end of each term. Our families have found these
incredibly useful to support home learning, especially during the recent Covid-
19 Lockdown. Further curriculum information, Knowledge Organisers and a
breakdown of year group expectations, for each subject area, is available on
our website (or by contacting the school office).

Early Years – Nursery and Reception

Children in Nursery and Reception follow the ‘Foundation Stage Curriculum
Guidance’ for organisation and curriculum planning.

Our Early Years classes consist of a 2-year-old Nursery (Ladybirds), three-
year-old Nursery (Caterpillars) and our Reception Class (Butterflies). Our Early
Years is housed in our main school building and has a real home from home
atmosphere. Our youngest children also benefit from their own facilities,
including purpose built outdoor learning areas.

For further information about our Early Years please see our Early Years
Policy, which is available to view on our website or from our school office.

10

Britannia Bridge Primary School prides itself on our
strong parent partnerships, which encourage both
school and our families to work together for the
maximum possible benefit of our children.

We actively encourage families to come into the
classroom with their children, at the start of the school
day. This is a great opportunity to regularly see and
be involved in your child’s school, their work and
speak with your child’s teacher.

Our school website, newsletters and Facebook page
help our families to keep up to date with key information
and school news.

In 2015, we created our Britannia Bridge Primary School closed Facebook
group. The aim of the group is to help keep parents and our community
informed of any events, key information and to celebrate good news and our
children’s successes. It was an overnight success and has continued to be so;
now with over 600 members. Parents have shared with us that it is an ideal way
for busy parents and families to enjoy a real insight into the life of their child at
school and helps them to be part of it. The group gives all parents and families
an opportunity to have a voice, to provide feedback and share words of support.

Educational, Extra Curricular Activities and Visits

Throughout the academic year,
the school makes use of a vast
array of educational activities, that
take place both in and outside
school, in order to enhance your
child’s excellent and enjoyable
curriculum.

These enrichment opportunities
include a multitude of school staff
run After School Clubs, ranging
from Board Games Club, Table
tennis, Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles
Tennis Club to Drama and Glee Club. Children enjoy and benefit from visiting
theatre companies, specialist providers, outdoor and adventurous residential
trips and visits to museums, libraries, zoos and habitats, to name but a few. All
visits link carefully to planned themes and topics, ensuring they are
educationally enriching, enjoyable and memorable experiences for our children.

To support and help sustain these opportunities, a voluntary contribution is
requested from parents to offset these costs. In the event that a family cannot
contribute financially, no child will be excluded from these activities and trips.

11

School Uniform

Britannia Bridge Primary School encourages all
children to wear uniform consisting of royal blue
sweatshirts, grey or dark trousers with white or
blue polo shirts. Girls have the additional
opportunity to wear grey, navy blue or tartan skirts
with white or blue blouses/polo shirts. All uniform
is available to order directly from Slaters School
Warehouse (Eckersley Mill - near Wigan Pier).

Parents are asked to ensure that all clothing is
clearly marked with their child’s name. Often
families have their child’s initials sewn into their
jumper to make them easily identifiable. Sensible
and smart footwear, without heels, ideally shoes, are required for school wear.
No jewellery is allowed, except for small studs for pierced ears.

Healthy School Meals

In January 2018, Britannia Bridge School started to provide its own school
meals service. Our aim is a simple one: to make sure all school meals are
deliciously nutritious and healthy.

Mrs Street and her team prepare and cook all
meals, in the school kitchen, enabling our
children to enjoy a healthy and nutritious
meal each day. Children can choose and
order their school meal in class, alongside
their parents, at the beginning of every
school day.

The charge for a school meal is currently
£2.30 per day / £11.50 per week.
All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2
are entitled to a free school meal through the
Government funded universal infant free
school meals scheme.
If you would like your child to have a superb
school meal made with great ingredients, then please let us know in the main
school office.

Families, who choose for their child to bring a healthy packed lunch to school,
enjoy them alongside their friends, who have a school meal. Sweets,
chocolates, fizzy and sugary drinks are not allowed. Families are encouraged
to provide healthy packed lunches. For further advice and guidance please see
any member of school staff.

12

We do not believe in canteen style meal services for schools, as this often
results in children rushing meals,
developing poor manners and poor
eating habits.

At Britannia Bridge Primary School,
lunchtimes are different to many
schools. They are a social occasion
and an opportunity for our children
to sit down at a family table, have a
meal and conversation with friends,
whilst developing marvellous
manners.

Early school meals (KS1plus) are served between 11.50am and 12.20pm and
upper school meals (KS2) are served between 12.25pm and 12.50pm in the
school hall.

After lunch, children enjoy their Lunchtime Activity and they can choose from
a range of activities and areas (including our MUGA, Running Track, Forest
School Area, Challenge Zone Climbing Area and outdoor Role Play Area).

Child Protection and Safeguarding

It is the legal duty of the
Designated Person for Child
Protection (Designated
Safeguarding Lead) (Headteacher
– Mrs Pidgeon-Duncalf) or, in her
absence, Deputy Head Miss
Hooper and Mr Concannon both
Deputy Designated Safeguarding
Lead) to seek support from
relevant organisations and
agencies should an issue of child
protection be reported or a
disclosure be made by a child or
adult. If anyone has any
concerns, with regards to child protection, please see Mrs Pidgeon-Duncalf at
the very earliest opportunity.

Attendance

Good attendance is vital to enable your child to make progress, enjoy lots of
success and to help them to make friends at school. We work very closely with
our families to encourage great attendance and strive to remove any barriers
that lead to missed time in school.

13

From the age of five, it is every child’s legal entitlement to attend school and is
the legal responsibility of parents/carers to ensure that their child has good
attendance.
All unauthorised, persistent, and frequently absent pupils are monitored closely
by the school. If children’s attendance falls below 90% (equivalent to missing
half a day each week), Wigan Council will consider enforcement measures to
ensure every child receives their entitlement.

Children need to be at school, on time, before registration at 9.00am, with doors
opening at 8.50am. Frequent lateness means children miss the start of each
morning lesson (for most classes this is Mathematics) and this usually results
in children having gaps in their education and them falling behind their peers.

If your child arrives, after 9am, they will be marked as late, if they arrive after
9.30am, their lateness will be marked as unauthorised absence.

Illness, Absences and Appointments

Parents are required to contact the school, before the start of the school day,
on the first day of their child’s absence, with a brief explanation of the reason.
In the event that an absence lasts longer than 2 days, we ask that parents
contact school to provide an update.

If a child becomes ill at school, parents are contacted and asked to take their
child home to recover. In the unlikely event that a serious accident was to occur,
this situation would be dealt with in the same way, unless hospital treatment is
required. If parents are unable to be contacted, the Headteacher or Deputy
Head will take the child to hospital.

Medication

The school has strong links with
our local Health Service and our
School Nurse Team are regular
visitors to school to support the
health and development of our
pupils. Vision, hearing, height
and weight checks are
completed at key times as
children progress through
school.
We are able to administer and
safely store medicine in school.
In the event your child requires
medicine, during the school day,
please contact Mrs Beeston or
Mrs Scales to complete a
medicine in schools form, which is available from the main school office.

Please note - We are not able to administer medicine to children, unless it is
prescribed by a doctor, and the child’s name is visible on the pharmacy label.

14

The School Day

The Britannia Bridge School day is organised as follows:

Key Stage 1 Key Stage 2
(YR, Y1, Y2) (Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6)
Doors Open 8.50am 8.50am
School starts 9.00am 9.00am
Snack and Break 10.00am – 10.25am 10.25am – 10.50am
Lunch 11.50am – 12.20pm 12.25pm – 12.50pm
Lunch Activity 12.20pm – 12.50pm 12.50pm – 1.20pm
Afternoon Break Flexible Flexible
School Ends 3.30pm 3.30pm

Nursery - All morning sessions, for both our 2 and 3-year-old Nursery children,
start at 9am (with the doors opening at 8.50am). The afternoon sessions finish
at 3.30pm.

Children are asked not to arrive at school before 8.35am, unless they attend
our Breakfast Club (or if absolutely necessary and prearranged with your child’s
class teacher) as we are unable to accept responsibility for children, before this
time.

Breakfast Club and After School Clubs
We run a Breakfast Club for families of children, who are in Reception to Y6.
The cost of our (not for profit) Breakfast Club is £3.00 per day and includes a
healthy breakfast and wide selection of activities, fully supervised by our school
staff. Places are limited so please book your child’s sessions in the main school
office at your earliest opportunity. Breakfast Club runs from 7.30am, until the
start of the school day at 8.50am.

Unfortunately, there is not a sufficient
enough need for after school childcare
for us to provide this service. We
regularly check the level of need with our
parents and families and are keen to
develop this service at ‘not for profit cost’
to parents, when it is required.

A wide range of After School and
Lunchtime Clubs are on offer, throughout
the year. This is a great opportunity for
children to further develop their interests,
skills and talents by engaging in a wide
variety of different activities.

Break Times

15

With the exception of times of bad weather, all children enjoy being active
outside at break times. Please ensure that your child has adequate outdoor
clothing, which is both warm and waterproof, in school each day.

Our Early Years children (Nursery and Reception) make the most of their
continuous outdoors provision - even when the weather isn’t ideal. We provide
all-in-one rain suits and wellington boots, when the weather requires them.

Healthy Snacks

As part of the National Fruit for Schools Scheme, we have a variety of fruit and
vegetables for our Key Stage 1 children to enjoy at break time. Free fruit is also
made available to all children, including Key Stage 2 pupils, on a regular basis.

Toast is available for children in Year 1 onwards and can be purchased for 20p
per day. As an alternative, parents can provide fruit or vegetables of their
choice. As we are a healthy school, all sweets, crisps and sugary snacks are
not allowed at break times.

School Inclusion

Britannia Bridge Primary School is a truly inclusive
school. We provide high levels of additional support
catering for a full range of abilities, social and emotional
demands and other factors. Tailor-made support
packages and targeted intervention are carefully
designed and regularly provided through group and/or
individual educational plans. We encourage parents to
be involved every step of the way to ensure their child’s
needs are met.
At Britannia Bridge we are very proud of the wide variety
of support we can provide through our dedicated and nurturing team, which is
supported by our very own Play Therapist. These strongly support our inclusive
school nature and ensures that we ensure the best ‘for each and everyone’.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

At Britannia Bridge, we strive to meet every child’s needs in order to ensure
that they have high aspirations and achieve their true potential. By working in
partnership, we challenge each and every one of our children to meet their
fullest potential.

Children with additional needs and disabilities are supported in a variety of ways
e.g. learning is truly differentiated and tailored to meet groups’ and individual
needs, our children are provided with additional support, within the classroom,
withdrawn for small group work or provided with one-to-one teaching. We work
closely with outside agencies to ensure we have the best specialist advice
available to support our children.

16

Miss Lewis is our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Leader. Alongside
herself, the SEND Team and through parent partnership, we ensure that all
children are supported and encouraged to make strong progress and enjoy
great achievements, whatever their needs.

Gifts, Talents and High Attainment

At Britannia Bridge, we actively encourage children to pursue their talents. We
offer specialist music lessons, science links with specialist providers and hold
theatre, music and dance workshops - working with a wide range of specialists.
All lessons and learning opportunities are carefully designed to provide a high
degree of challenge, which enable all children, including the most gifted,
talented and able pupils, to be challenged and achieve.

Parental Involvement

Parents/carers are encouraged to join in as many aspects of school life as
possible. During the school year, opportunities are arranged for parents/carers
and teachers to meet on a one to one basis to share and discuss their child’s
achievements, progress, attainment and next steps in learning.
There are also opportunities for parents to visit our school assemblies, special
events and join our Parent Voice group or Friends of Britannia Bridge Primary
School Charity, to support Britannia Bridge Primary School in continual
improvement.

Parents often speak with Mrs Pidgeon-Duncalf (Headteacher) in the
playground, during the morning and after school, but can also make
appointments to see the Headteacher should the need arise at any time.

17

Progress, Attainment and Achievement

Throughout your child’s school life. their
progress is robustly assessed and monitored.
Our children continually receive feedback from
their teachers so that they know what they are
doing well and what their next steps are.

Children’s work is shared with parents/carers,
at Parents’ Evenings, in October and March. All
parents receive a comprehensive school report
reflecting their child’s progress, attainment and
curriculum coverage in the summer term,
towards the end of the academic year.

Physical Education including Swimming

Throughout the school year, all children in Y4 are given the opportunity to go
swimming at Wigan Swimming Baths. Here, they receive swimming lessons
from professional swimming instructors. We also offer additional lessons for
those children who cannot swim 25 metres by the time they are in Y6.

All children’s Physical Education kits need to consist of pumps or plain
trainers with a non-marking sole, plain white t-shirt, plain black or blue shorts
and plain jogging bottoms (for colder outdoor weather) or the official school
logo PE kits, which are also available from Slaters. All PE kits need to be in a
named bag and left in school for the whole of the half term. Kits go home to
be washed at the end of each half term.

PE, Games and Swimming are not only compulsory, but also a very
important aspect in children’s education to ensure they develop into fit,
active and healthy adults.

Sex and Relationship Education

The objective of sex and relationship education is to help and support our young
people through their physical, emotional and moral development. By using a
planned programme of progression, which is age appropriate and firmly
embedded in Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSH&CE),
we aim to help young people to respect themselves and others and move with
confidence from childhood through adolescence into adulthood. They will be
helped to develop the skills and understanding they need to live confident,
healthy and independent lives.
Please see our Sex and Relationship Education Policy for further
information.

18

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development

In all aspects of school life, our children enjoy a wealth of opportunities to
develop their spiritual, moral, social and cultural attitudes and understanding,
that are necessary to become part of and contribute to a caring community.
Parents have the right to withdraw their children from Religious Education.

Behaviour and Safety

At Britannia Bridge, we have high expectations of ‘each and everyone’,
including behaviour and attitudes to learning. Our aim is to develop our pupils’
understanding of behaviours and attitudes, which are acceptable to all within
our school.

Acceptable behaviour and great attitudes to learning are rewarded in a
positive and transparent way, whilst unacceptable behaviour and poor
attitudes to learning are dealt with consistently.

Rewards and sanctions are applied consistently, across school, and our
pupils develop a clear understanding of the appropriate ways to treat their
peers, staff, parents and equipment. It is important that pupils are clear about
the effect that their choices have on others and are encouraged to take
ownership of the choices they make and their behaviour or actions.

At Britannia Bridge, our Behaviour Policy is consistently applied by all staff
and is supported by clear rewards and sanctions. This is available in a separate
booklet for parents on our website or the from the school office.

19

Consideration of Complaints

Any complaint should initially be addressed to the Headteacher. In the event
of the problem remaining unresolved, the issue should be put in writing, sealed
in an envelope and addressed to the Chair of Governors, C/O Britannia Bridge
Primary School. The matter will then be dealt with in accordance to the
procedures and guidance set by Wigan Council, that have been adopted by the
Governing Body. Further guidance is available in the Complaints Policy.

Public Access to Documents

All statutory information is available to view online, via our website, or by
contacting Mrs Beeston in the school office.

Inspection copies or copies of any documents, which are required to be made
available under the Freedom of Information Act, can be arranged by contacting
the School Office.

Pupil Routes

The majority of the children, who attended
Britannia Bridge, transfer to the following
secondary schools:-

o Deans Trust Rose Bridge
o The Deanery
o Byrchall
o Hawkley Hall Academy

We work very closely with our feeder High
Schools, including visits to and projects within
our school. This helps to ensure our Year 6
pupils have a very smooth and successful
transition to Secondary School.
