MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT ANDREA SOBEL

As I reflect on Rabbi Glazer’s time with our congregation, at times it
feels as though she was always a part of our community. At other
times, I remember that her 20 months with us has been exclusively
during COVID times. There is no “before time” in our relationship
with one another. Meeting Rabbi Chana Leslie Glazer for the first
time during extensive virtual and in-person interviews, I

MESSAGE FROM
RABBI EMERITUS BRUCE AFT

Dear Community of Friends,

What an exciting time for the congregation! After enduring all the
challenges of Zoom, WebEx, hybrid services, and the inability to come
together as an Adat Reyim (community of friends), there finally will be an
opportunity to have a special installation service for Rabbi Glazer. This
truly will be a shehecheyanu moment for Adat Reyim.

REFLECTION

Tuesday Meditation Minyan with Rabbi Chana

Adat Reyim recently celebrated the first year anniversary of its
meditation group, begun in October 2020. Through Zoom and Rabbi
Chana's guidance meditation participants have been able to connect
with old friends and meet new ones. Best of all, we have been

We soon learned that a need for meditation “experience” would not

be a criteria for joining this group. Rabbi Chana’s warmth and

acceptance of all was comforting from the start.

MESSAGES FROM OUR CONGREGANTS

A Close Connection from the Start

Dear Rabbi Glazer,

I met you for the first time on February 21, 2020, just minutes before the Shabbat
evening service that you led as a candidate to become our new rabbi. To ensure
consistency, the Rabbi Search Committee had asked me to serve as the cantorial
soloist for each of the three candidates. After that Shabbat evening service, I knew
you were my first choice.

We just seemed to have a rapport on the bima, a close connection. From my point of
view, the interactions that night were a bit smoother than they were with the other
two candidates. That was very important to me because I knew that you and I would
frequently share the bima during services and that, during the one service each
month when the choir participated, we would sometimes need a Vulcan mind meld—
a telepathic link—to know when to make an unplanned change in the service.

Little did we know then that you would begin your service as our rabbi during a
pandemic. I was right about my first choice. The pandemic compelled us (and
others) to work together virtually to plan the High Holiday services, altered and
abbreviated to fit the online medium. Although we may have butted heads
occasionally when I wanted to include more than was practical on Zoom, you always
nudged me gently to the sensible decision.

Thank you. I look forward to many in-person meetings and services with you when
circumstances allow them.

L’Shalom,

MESSAGES FROM OUR CONGREGANTS

Inspiring a Robust Adult Ed Program
Not long ago, I had a lengthy conversation with Rabbi Glazer about our Adult
Education program which I co-chair with Sarah Berry. Adult Ed is clearly very close
to her heart, and she is quite the cheerleader for it. As Sarah and I continue to
develop the Adult Ed programming, we look forward to Rabbi Glazer’s contributions
as well as her continued support. Our congregation includes so many people of vast
and varied experiences; we encourage all to reach out to us so we can share your
wisdom and be entertained and enlightened.
Rabbi Glazer’s contributions extend to other activities. When Rabbi Glazer
volunteered to participate in last year’s “Choose Your Own Adventure” Purim
Schpiel on Zoom, which I directed, I was delighted. I do hope she will be able to
appear in future schpiels. And it’s great to have a rabbi who doesn’t gather teasing
comments about an inability to sing since clearly, she has a lovely singing voice. As
we plan our return to musical Purim schpiels, watch out, Rabbi, your singing may
not be limited to services much longer!

MESSAGES FROM OUR CONGREGANTS

Making Sure We All Have a Place at the Table

I remember first reading Rabbi Glazer’s bio during The Great Rabbi Search and
thinking – “This is who we need.” I still can’t quite put my finger on it, but
something in that small snippet told me that she would be the right fit for the
unique personality of our little Shul. That perhaps her perspective - colored by
what she had seen of the world – would keep us grounded but aspirational, or that
her journalist’s perception would bear out a fair judge and a cool head. And when I
first heard her speak at Erev Shabbat, I felt gently, but cautiously, uplifted – careful
contemplation positively streamed out of her, challenging us but supporting us to
land with our thoughts where we needed to – perhaps just a little further, a little
more open than before.

As time has passed and I have had the honor to work with her not only as a
congregant but also as a member of the Board of Directors, I see these qualities in
Rabbi Glazer even more deeply and surely. I have learned that she is the keenest
observer. When she speaks, it is not until she has gathered the facts and weighed
the emotions. She waits to speak until the end, not merely for the sake of
participating, but because she has seen a truth that we have missed, and we cannot
have closure until the last of her carefully chosen words hang in the air. The voices
that are small, or scared, or unpopular or uncomfortable – Rabbi Glazer makes sure
that they all have a place at the table. We are so very proud of the inclusive
community that we have become. With gratitude and pride, I can say how fortunate
I feel we are to have Rabbi Chana Leslie Glazer encouraging and keeping us on that
path.

MESSAGES FROM OUR CONGREGANTS

Rabbi, Teacher, Friend

It’s been a short time since we’ve come to know you but we do want to express
some thoughts on the times we’ve interacted with you.

When you started a Meditation hour on Zoom, it was a difficult period in your life
with the loss of your dad, with Covid, abbreviated services, outings, and social
gatherings. We tuned in to the meditation briefly as we normally walk early a.m. In
the midst of the pandemic, it was such a wonderful program you made time for.

We frequently are on Zoom for Erev Shabbat services and have appreciated the fact
that you have explained the meaning of our basic prayer segments. You also have
clearly reached out to our community with actions and words in a meaningful way.
When we came down with Covid and contacted you about how to deal with it, we
wanted to say a prayer with you. It was touching and very meaningful to know you
were there. We felt your love and caring.

Talk about patience! Rabbi, you have been a real role model since your leg accident
in the midst of weeks being off your feet and not driving; however, you continued
giving your time on Zoom and other venues in any capacity you could. We applaud
you for your patience in the midst of big medical setbacks.

You were so enthusiastic about Adat Reyim and its history that you immediately
welcomed the opportunity (when presented by a long-term member) to learn about
Adat Reyim’s early history, going back to the “beginning” with an early Adat Reyim
President. You took copious notes for more than an hour.

Your installation is a special time in the history of Adat Reyim. We hope this coming
year 2022 brings you good health, happiness, love, and many blessings. May your
installation bring healing, joy, togetherness, commitment, and love as we renew our
faith in our community.

MESSAGES FROM OUR CONGREGANTS

Guiding Our Religious Practices with Warmth and Insights

Rabbi Glazer, over the past year, as co-chair of the Religious Practices and Policies
Committee, we have worked closely together to plan services for worship. You have
paid such extraordinary attention to detail in preparing the outlines for our
services. And, you have made services more educational by explaining the prayers
as we move through the service and by implementing a Torah discussion.

I lost track of how many hours, on the phone and on Zoom, you spent planning for
the High Holidays this past fall. We had to choose which services to have on Zoom
and which to have in-person, and then where (whether in the Sanctuary or the
traffic circle or in the tent) to have the in-person services. And, working with the
re-opening committee (kudos to Bruce Kaplan) so that we could safely resume in-
person services, we became “experts” on COVID-19 aerosol dynamics while
attempting to estimate how many viral particles and droplets each congregant
generates when singing!

I also need to comment on how much you have comforted the B’nai Mitzvah families
this past year. Planning a “B-Mitzvah” (a new inclusive word that you taught us!) is
stressful in normal times, but planning one during a pandemic is beyond
challenging. Between providing us with your super-detailed service outlines and
noting who should stand at which microphone, how to conduct an Aliyah, etc., you
guided us through many successful B-Mitzvot this year.

Aside from our services, you have shown us innovative ways to observe our Jewish
Holidays during the pandemic, from creating your own Powerpoint Haggadah for an
online Passover seder to lighting Chanukah candles with a variety of imaginative
menorot on Zoom. I look forward to continuing to work with you. Mazal Tov on
your installation as our Rabbi!

MESSAGES FROM OUR CONGREGANTS

Embodying Our Welcoming, Caring, Diverse, Inclusive Congregation

It is my pleasure to take the time to share my experiences interacting with Rabbi
Glazer. As both a member of the Adat Reyim Board of Directors the past two years
and the Rabbi Search Committee, I believe I have a unique perspective on the
Rabbi’s first year-and-one-half as the spiritual leader of Adat Reyim.

I first met Rabbi Glazer during the rabbi search interview process. Specifically, I
met her in person when she visited Adat Reyim for her weekend-long interview.
During the weekend, I participated in a number of events with the Rabbi, including
a group interview with the search committee, a Shabbat pot-luck dinner, and an
open question-and-answer session in the sanctuary.

During the Q&A session, I first felt a connection with her as she explained her
Jewish journey and the circuitous route to how she became a rabbi. Two things
really stood out to me during this event. First, she expressed both intellectual and
spiritual curiosity when, as a journalist and for the first time seeing a woman rabbi,
she thought, “Oh, women can do that?”

The second moment that stood out was her statement, “I am Adat Reyim,” in
response to the explanation of our congregation’s values and beliefs gathered
through surveys and focus groups. The confidence with which Rabbi Glazer
believed she was the right match for Adat Reyim was striking and her Jewish
journey reinforced this.

Since she first took on the mantle as our spiritual leader and has led us through
unforeseeable times, I have witnessed Rabbi Glazer continue to demonstrate that
she embodies our welcoming, caring, diverse, and inclusive “community of friends”
and I look forward to what a future together holds for the Rabbi and Adat Reyim.

MESSAGES FROM OUR CONGREGANTS

Serving Every Congregant in Old and New Ways

I often glance over at the chart paper where I wrote down the characteristics the
congregation identified for a new rabbi during our search process. And then I
smile. How fortunate we are to have found a rabbi who is engaging, compassionate,
knowledgeable, and a committed collaborator, just like we were seeking. And yet,
who could have known during the rabbi search process that our world would turn
upside down and our spiritual leader would not even get to meet her congregants
in person for months, and even then with masks on. And that our new rabbi would
have to find a way to make services meaningful not only in the centuries-old way,
but using the latest technology. But that is what Rabbi Glazer embodies. She is
committed to serving each congregant in whatever way is necessary, today and
tomorrow. Her warmth and caring come through those little boxes on the
computer, just as they do in person at a Kol Nidre service outside the building, or a
B Mitzvah ceremony on the bimah. Whether in person or online, Rabbi Glazer is the
rabbi we sought and the rabbi we were blessed to find. Congratulations as we make
it official!

My Bat Mitzvah

Rabbi Glazer helped me to prepare the speech for my Bat Mitzvah, including
walking me through the meaning of my Torah portion. She was also there for me
when I needed her during the service. She told me what was next and answered
almost all my questions. I felt very good about my Bat Mitzvah because the rabbi
was so helpful and supportive from start to finish.

MESSAGES FROM OUR CONGREGANTS

Both, And

It has been a privilege and joy for us to work with Rabbi Glazer in our roles as Co-
Directors of Shir Reyim. We were, and remain, deeply impressed with her ability to
keep both the big picture and details of a service (or an entire High Holiday
season!) in her mind, as she so ably showed while helping us plan our Spirit of the
Holy Days and Spirit of Shabbat services. She has always respected our attempts to
respond to the expressed needs of the congregation, both past and present, and we
remain grateful for the sensitivity she showed when considering the work that had
gone into developing the Spirit services before her arrival.

Indeed, Rabbi Glazer's open mind, thoughtfulness, and skill in considering a
multitude of diverse needs and wishes simultaneously have been the constants of
her tenure. She appreciates both more traditional and more contemporary
approaches to prayer, and her appreciation of both vocal and instrumental music
has been gratifying. She demonstrates both concern for the authenticity and
religious aspects of prayer and the needs of our diverse congregants and labored
under extremely challenging circumstances to bring the most meaningful prayer
experiences possible to all congregational constituencies. She respects
congregants at all levels of observance and belief and has done a masterful job of
incorporating diverse materials into both her rabbinic leadership during services
and her more personal interactions with congregants, individually and in small
groups. And, of course, she has brought both vast knowledge and wisdom to all her
work and leadership.

We look forward to many more years of working together with Rabbi Glazer, and
we wish her all the very best!

MESSAGES FROM OUR CONGREGANTS

Connecting Through Our Holocaust Torah

On the occasion of your Installation, it is an honor to reflect on the opportunities I
have had to get to know you, Rabbi Glazer I remember the drive-through at Adat
Reyim when you first arrived. As I hung out the window and introduced myself, you
immediately recognized my name! You knew I was part of the Caring Committee
leadership and you couldn't wait to talk to me! Wow! That was impressive--and
really made me feel special!

We soon developed a relationship through the Caring Committee. Under your
guidance, I learned how this committee could be more sensitive and thorough in
dealing with congregational issues.

But I feel I really connected with you when we planned the Torah cover dedication
for Dan Ebert and Beryl Loveland-Ebert. That took months of thoughtful
conversations. We had a lot of issues to work through. As we talked, I remember
you saying that you were a good problem solver. And you proved yourself correct!

The solutions you came up with were brilliant and timely. I enjoyed the many hours
we spent talking about the Torah and its history. You were passionately interested
in learning how important this Torah was and is to our congregation.

Your leadership made this event unique, touching the hearts and souls of everyone
who attended--especially Dan and Beryl. It meant a great deal to me as well.
Once things in the world improve, I look forward to working with you on other
special projects--in person! When I taught kindergarten I used to offer one of the
three H's--a handshake, hug, or high 5. Can't wait to offer that to you.

MESSAGES FROM OUR CONGREGANTS

A Role Model for Acceptance and Inclusion
If you knew me, you probably wouldn’t think I would join a synagogue. Mainly
because I’ve never felt like I belonged in the Jewish community. I grew up in an
interfaith household where we celebrated both Jewish and Christian holidays. I
identified as Jewish, but I never felt like I could fully connect to it as somehow that
would be a betrayal to my Dad, as if I was choosing a side and he was the loser. I had
attended some religious classes as a child but never felt like I could really belong as I
was a Jew who also celebrated Christmas and we didn’t belong to a synagogue. I felt
like I was an imposter in every Jewish thing I attempted to do.
Today I have a daughter who I am raising as part of an interfaith household and I
wanted her to desperately not feel the loneliness I felt. I came to Adat Reyim for the
preschool so she could help form her Jewish identity younger than I did… but then I
met Rabbi Glazer. I heard her talk in the Exploring Judaism class about her own
history growing up in an interfaith household and Jewish identity. I saw part of my
story in hers and it brought tears to my eyes to know that someone with a similar
experience could be accepted in Judaism so much as to become the Rabbi of a
congregation! It made me feel like there was a place for me in Judaism and there was
a place here for me in this congregation with Rabbi Glazer. Her courage and warmth
has helped me be brave enough to look past my own insecurities about my
upbringing and embrace the Jew I’ve always identified as in my heart. She’s given me
the greatest gift and I will forever be thankful.

MESSAGES FROM OUR CONGREGANTS

Instilling a Feeling of Belonging and Acceptance for Interfaith Families
At the beginning of Rabbi Glazer’s tenure at Adat Reyim, the Rabbi Success Team
decided to hold a number of ‘listening sessions’ in order for the Rabbi to meet up
with congregants of different backgrounds and affiliations, one of which was
Interfaith families. It was clear from the session that this was a group that wanted
more connection and opportunities to chat and to get to know each other. I was
part of this session and volunteered to facilitate a future meet-up. Having come
from an Interfaith background herself, Rabbi Glazer was very supportive of us
forming a quarterly discussion forum as one of the ‘break-out’ groups formed as
the result of these listening sessions. She made time to facilitate these chats and
helped co-organizer Sariel Ende-Alonzo and myself come up with interesting
facilitator questions and ideas.
The needs of this group of congregants span from education and inclusivity to
building community and sharing common values. Rabbi Glazer has not shied away
from the unique joys and challenges this group brings to our community. She
understands and has been a wonderful resource to our families. Her support is so
important to the feeling of belongingness and acceptance that this important and
ever-growing population represents. Our group is just getting started, but we are
excited about the future possibilities with Rabbi Glazer’s leadership!

MESSAGES FROM OUR CONGREGANTS

Finding Special Meaning in a Bar Mitzvah at Home
When I was preparing for my Bar Mitzvah, it was during COVID, and I was pretty
upset that I couldn’t have it in the synagogue surrounded by my family and
friends. I still wish that could’ve been the case, but despite having it at home, it
was pretty special. A large part of that was because of Rabbi Glazer. She made it
special by bringing a Torah to our house for us to use. And we had a lot of
conversations about Jewish empowerment, the meaning of being Jewish, and what
it meant to be a Bar Mitzvah (among other things).
I especially liked talking about Jewish empowerment, and our conversations made
me feel that being Jewish was not only something I was born into, but something I
represented by my actions and behaviors.
Rabbi Glazer made my Bar Mitzvah special because it wasn’t just about reading
from the Torah or thinking about the Torah portion. It was also about me trying
to figure out what being Jewish means to me at this point in my life. She was very
thoughtful about the service—trying to find ways to make it be a special day and
interacting with my family on the zoom service.
A big thank you to Rabbi Glazer and thank you for being our Rabbi!!

MESSAGES FROM OUR CONGREGANTS

Reaching Out to Members, Even in a Pandemic
Rabbi Glazer’s installation and the year 2022 have arrived. We greet both these
events with hope in our hearts, despite many months of upheaval in our daily lives.
Our plans for a “return to the way things were before” have had to constantly be
adjusted and readjusted. Our attempts to build new relationships, new experiences
and a revival of the comfortingly familiar sometimes have a quality of a mirage -
seeming to be within reach one moment, and then once again eluding us. The rabbi
has come to us in an era that has presented constant challenges to a new leader. She
has contended with a world seemingly turned upside down by the pandemic and
with her own personal losses and setbacks. And still, she brings her brilliant smile,
her open mind, and reaches out to all.
The rabbi has assisted us, as board members, to call upon all our reserves of
patience, our powers of imagination, and our reserves of flexibility. She has led us in
new directions, welcoming greater diversity in our congregation and new forms of
spiritual practice. Despite the pandemic, we have attracted new members! She also
has supported me as an individual and enabled me to transcend trouble, to breathe
deeply, and with gratitude. Her guidance enables us all to welcome what we hope
will be a brighter new year!
Best wishes for your health and happiness, strength, and peace of mind, Rabbi
Glazer, during this special time. We honor you during your installation weekend. I
feel blessed to have you with us here at Congregation Adat Reyim.

MESSAGES FROM OUR CONGREGANTS

Hearing What Matters to Us

When Rabbi Chana Leslie Glazer led her first service at Adat Reyim in February
2020, instead of giving a standard Erev Shabbat sermon, she told us, “I care,” and
asked to hear from US, about what mattered to US. To me, this exemplifies
everything that our not-so-new-anymore Rabbi has done since officially joining our
Community of Friends: listening (and looking!) intensely, caring passionately, and
thoughtfully acting on what she hears and sees. I’m lucky to be the personal
recipient of such focus and care, in so many ways. When Rabbi Glazer saw my
detailed note-taking during Board meetings, she started emailing me her D’var
Torahs so I don’t have to work as hard to take notes in the moment. When she
noticed that I’d stopped coming as regularly to services after this school year
started, she called to check in… and we ended up talking for an hour and a half
about not just that, but Family & Friends services, virtual vs. Zoom services, Nina
Mina, and other mutual interests. Rabbi, my co-leader Kate, and I have had multiple
conversations about how best to conduct Family & Friends Services online and (a
few times) in person. And Rabbi Glazer came to a choir rehearsal this past fall to
acknowledge how difficult it was to be in a choir during a second COVID High
Holiday season and thank us. I’m so glad to now have this chance to acknowledge,
care, and actively thank Rabbi for everything SHE has done, in return.

Rabbi Glazer, it has been such a joy to work, pray, and celebrate with you at Board
meetings, Family & Friends Services, choir services, the Purim Schpiel, and many
more events this past year and a half. I look forward to doing so for many, many
more years to come!

MESSAGES FROM OUR CONGREGANTS

Making Our Wedding Day Perfect
We were delighted to become Rabbi Glazer’s first Adat Reyim wedding and her first
wedding in the state of Virginia! She met us with joy, warmth, and professionalism. It
was important to her not just to officiate but to get to know us individually and as a
couple. Rabbi Glazer spent time with each of us, inquiring about our future goals as
a couple and about any fears we might have. We know each other so well but the
introspection was a worthwhile experience. It was also important to her that our
ceremony was in full compliance with Jewish laws. It turned out that Don needed a
‘get’ before being able to get married. What an ordeal! But Rabbi Glazer, with her
many worldly connections, took care of all of the arrangements to make it happen.
She also reviewed the wording of our ketubah as well. To that end, she went out of
her way to make every act, word, and letter in line with our Jewish faith. She did the
same for our wedding vows. We met many times before our backyard COVID
ceremony both on Zoom and in person. She treated us as if we were the most
important people in the world. We are forever grateful to her and our synagogue for
the love and support we have received. It could not have been a more perfect day.
