variety of magnificient libraries pictures around the world. We
prepared a simple explanation for each of the library. We hope you

enjoy reading our travel log book.

THE LIBRARY THAT CHECK
OUT DEAD ANIMALS

( ALASKA RESOURCES LIBRARY AND
INFORMATION SERVICES )

Sure you can check out books on natural history, but why just read about animals when you can take
them home and look at them in the (admittedly dead) flesh? At the Alaska Resources Library and
Information Services (ARLIS), you can do just that, checking out pieces from their collection of taxidermy
animals.

Located in Anchorage, the library is set up to provide as comprehensive a collection of information and
resources about Alaska’s natural world. They are devoted to educating visitors about the state’s precious
resources and wildlife. The library holds over 250,000 titles, hundreds of print journals, and a number of
research databases devoted to such Alaska-centric interests like fish migration, mining, and the Iditarod.

In addition to the traditional library materials, ARLIS is mainly notable for
its wide array of taxidermy animals which can be checked out for two
weeks at a time. Birds, fish, otters, and more are all available to loan, sent
out in clear plastic boxes so that they are not damaged by being loaned
out. All of the animals are of course, native to Alaska. A collection of furs
and skulls is also available to rent, free of charge.

This probably is not the library for those minor criminals who enjoy
returning library books late, as the late fees are probably much steeper.

THE INFINITE
REFLECTION

( YANGZHOU
ZHONGSHUGE )

Architecture firm X+living has completed ‘yangzhou zhongshuge’, a library located in
zhen yuan, china. the concept was based on the idea of water and how it is the cradle and
breeding ground of the yangzhou culture. another important element was the arch
bridge—an indispensable traditional element used as a guiding factor of commerce, which
will represent in the bookstore the connection between human and books throughout
history. as visitors walk in, they are welcomed by the arched walls which turn into ceilings
that contain the books. the use of a black mirrored glass as floors reflects the bookshelves
while giving a feeling of water.

The New York Public Library has been an essential provider
of free books, information, ideas, and education for all New
Yorkers for more than 100 years. Founded in 1895, NYPL is the
nation’s largest public library system, featuring a unique
combination of 88 neighborhood branches and four scholarly

the iconic 42nd Street library and three other research

Columbus’s 1493 letter announcing his discovery of the New
World, George Washington’s original Farewell Address, and
John Coltrane’s handwritten score of “Lover Man.”

IRELAND’S
LITERARY TREASURY

( TRINITY COLLEGE
LIBRARY )

The Library’s history dates back to the
establishment of the College in 1592 and it is the
largest library in Ireland. Today it has over 6
million printed volumes with extensive collections
of journals, manuscripts, maps and music
reflecting over 400 years of academic
development. The most famous of its
manuscripts, the Book of Kells and the Book of
Durrow, were presented by Henry Jones, Bishop
of Meath and former vice-chancellor of the
University, in the 1660s. Other special collections
include the Ussher Collection acquired in 1661
and the Fagel Collection of 1802.

The Library was endowed with Legal
Deposit privilege in 1801 and continues to receive
copies of material published in the United Kingdom
and Ireland. The Library supports the learning and
research needs across all disciplines of the College;
it is a major research library of international
repute; it provides services to a wide range of
external users and institutions; it contributes to the
development of creative initiatives in information
provision and its exhibitions of manuscripts and
other treasures attracts hundreds of thousands of
visitors to visit the Old Library each year. Although
an institution of great antiquity, the Library
pioneers modern methods of resource discovery
and developments in the teaching, learning and
research processes.

ABBEY LIBRARY OF
ST. GALL IN ST.
GALLEN,
SWITZERLAND

Early architectural plans that depict a library
attached to the main church of the Abbey of
Saint Gall suggest the collection dates back to
around 820 CE. As the abbey’s catalogue of
science writings and manuscripts grew, the
collection moved to its lavishly decorated
Baroque-style hall by Peter Thumb in the
mid-18th century. Nearly 160,00 volumes make
up the intricately carved-wood shelves, all of
which are available for public use.

THE SHOPPING
MALL LIBRARY

( STARFIELD LIBRARY )

Sitting inside the world’s largest
underground shopping mall, the Starfield
Library houses nearly 50,000 books and
magazines spanning genres. Lights from the
two-story athenaeum cause the space to glow
throughout the day and welcome in visitors to
relax on the plush sofas. Each month, the
library hosts a range of events from author
lectures to art exhibitions.

KLEMENTINUM
NATIONAL LIBRARY
IN PRAGUE, CZECH

REPUBLIC

With its ornate ceiling frescoes by Jan Hiebl
and rich gold-and-mahogany spiral pillars, it’s
no wonder why the Klementinum is touted as
“the Baroque pearl of Prague.” The library first
opened in 1722 as a part of a Jesuit university
but now serves as the National Library of the
Czech Republic, housing over 20,00 volumes of
foreign theological literature. A portrait of
Emperor Joseph II sits at the head of the hall to
commemorate his work in preserving books
from abolished monastic libraries, many of
which remain in the hall today.

THE LIBRARY OF
FUTURE

( BIBLIOTHECA
ALEXANDRINA IN
ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT )

Inaugurated in 2002, Bibliotheca Alexandrina aims
to recapture the spirit and scholarship of the ancient
world’s largest and most comprehensive library. The
original Library of Alexandria housed the largest
collection of books and manuscripts of its time and
was regarded as the capital of knowledge before it
was destroyed in a fire nearly 2,000 years ago.

Designed by the Norwegian architecture
firm Snøhetta, the new institution includes a library
room with room for eight million books, four
museums, four art galleries, a planetarium, and a
manuscript-restoration laboratory. Etches of 120
different scripts cover the gray Aswan granite walls
as a tribute to the evolution of human language.

ROYAL PORTUGUESE
CABINET OF

READING IN RIO DE
JANEIRO, BRAZIL

This Neo-Maueline stunner holds the biggest
and most valuable collection of Portuguese
literature outside of Portugal with nearly
400,000 rare manuscripts, singular works, and
unique proofs decorating the shelves. A trio of
Portuguese immigrants originally founded the
cabinet in 1822 to bring literary traditions and
masterpieces to the newly independent Brazil.
In 1887, the doors of the Royal Portuguese
Cabinet of Reading opened to the public
revealing three-stories of works to be
discovered and the radiant Altar of the
Homeland by goldsmith António Maria Ribeiro.
