Negro National Anthem

LIFT EV’RY VOICE AND SING

By James Weldon Johnson and R. Rosamond Johnson

Lift ev’ry voice and sing till earth and heaven ring
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoices rise
High as the list’ning skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod, bitter the chast’ning rod,
felt in the days when hope unborn had
died yet with a steady beat,
have not our weary feet come to the place
for which our fathers died?

We have come over a way that with tears has been watered
We have come treading the path through the
blood of the slaughtered,
out from the gloomy past till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam
of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,
thou who has brought us thus far on our way;
thou who has by thy might led us into the light,
keep us forever in the path we pray.

Lest our feet stray from the places,
our God where we met Thee;
lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world,
we forget thee, shadowed beneath thy hand,
may we forever stand, true to our God,
true to our native land.

58th Annual Founder’s Day

National
Historical
Overview

The late Emma Odessa Young, a realtor from New York City and a member of the New York Club
of Business and Professional Women, conceived the idea of a national organization of business
and professional women in 1934. In July of 1935, Mrs. Ollie Chin Porter, president of the New
York Club, extended an invitation to local clubs organized as Business and Professional Women’s
Clubs, to join and form a national organization. The first convention of the National Association
of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. was held in Atlantic City, NJ in July 1936
at the Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church. The aim of this newly formed national organization
was then, as it is today, to attract women of high caliber to organize similar clubs within their
communities. Facing the realities of the times, their daring and inspiring goals were to share their
experiences and exchange information; to protect their interest and to encourage and develop
opportunities for black women in businesses and professions.

Our Mission

To promote the interests of African American business and professional women; to serve as a
bridge for young people seeking to enter business and the professions; to improve the quality
of life in the local and global communities; and to foster good fellowship.

Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver

58th Annual Founder’s DaySojourner Truth Award

Sojourner Truth Award

Lieutenant Governor

Sheila Y. Oliver

Lieutenant Governor Oliver is a self-described “Jersey Girl,” born and raised in an ethnically diverse Newark neighborhood.
Lieutenant Governor Oliver was inspired as a young girl to be a fighter for the voiceless when her eyes were opened to societal
injustices and inequities around her, often citing “A Tale of Two Cities” as her youth awakening. She has since pioneered a successful
career in public service advocating for social justice, women’s equality, and education, ultimately becoming the first woman of color
to serve in a statewide elected office in New Jersey history. In 2021, Lt. Governor Oliver was reelected to serve a second term in
office.
In addition to her role as Lieutenant Governor, she serves as Commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs, where she has
led efforts to strengthen and expand initiatives for fair and affordable housing, community revitalization, homelessness prevention,
and local government services that support New Jersey’s 565 municipalities.
Under her leadership, the Department has also expanded and leveraged a wide range of initiatives aimed at assisting distressed
municipalities, including the federal Opportunity Zones tax incentive, the Main Street New Jersey program, the Neighborhood
Preservation Program, the Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit program, and the Urban Enterprise Zone Program, which was
renewed by legislation she signed in 2021.
In her role as Acting Governor, she has signed multiple bills into law, including those that established a Caregiver Task Force to
identify ways to support people taking care of loved ones who are elderly or disabled, require all public school students in grades
6-8 to receive financial literacy education, strengthen equal pay for equal work by preventing employers from asking employees’
previous salary history, and protect employees from wage theft. She also signed into law legislation that established a Restorative
and Transformative Justice for Youths and Communities Pilot Program within the Juvenile Justice Commission to help divert youth
from entering and re-entering the juvenile justice system.
Across her career, Lieutenant Governor Oliver has worked in the public, non-profit, and private sectors, and has taught numerous
college courses. She has served as a member of both the East Orange Board of Education and the Essex County Board of Chosen
Freeholders.
In 2003, she was elected to serve the 34th Legislative District in the New Jersey General Assembly.
A trailblazer in every sense of the word, in 2010 she became the first African-American woman in state history to serve as Assembly
Speaker, and just the second in the nation’s history to lead a state legislative house.
A proud alumna of the Newark public school system, Lieutenant Governor Oliver graduated cum laude from Lincoln University, and
received her Master of Science Degree in Community Organization, Planning and Administration from Columbia University. She has
received honorary doctorates of humane letters from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Lincoln University, Montclair University
and Berkeley and Essex County Colleges.
She is a proud 40-plus-year resident of East Orange where she treasures her time with her 94-year-old mother, who has always
encouraged her to be a critical thinker while fostering her passion for helping people through effective public policy.

Education Award

Education Award

Dr. Jennifer
Little Edmonds

Jennifer Little Edmonds is from Detroit, Michigan and holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the
University of Michigan. After completing her undergraduate degree, she worked as a process engineer for Dow Corning
Corporation in Midland, Michigan for several years. During that time she volunteered with the National Organization for the
Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) and became a member of Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority, Inc. in 1999. After several years as an engineer, Jennifer knew there was something missing from her career,
but couldn’t quite articulate it. She attended the PhD Project Annual Conference in 1999 - an organization whose goal is to
diversify corporate America by diversifying the role models in the front of classrooms. Attending this event is what jump-
started her transition to academia and higher education. She immediately began applying to graduate programs throughout
the northeast, was awarded a teaching and research assistantship at Rutgers and began graduate study at Rutgers University
in Newark in 2000. By 2004, she earned both her doctoral degree in management science and M.B.A. at Rutgers University.
During this time, she also met and married her husband of almost eighteen years, Gary. In 2004, they relocated to Wilkes-
Barre, Pennsylvania and she began her career as a college professor in business at Wilkes University. As a faculty member,
she taught courses in statistics, operations management, quantitative decision making and information systems. She soon
moved up through the faculty ranks and took on multiple leadership roles within the Jay S. Sidhu School of Business and
Leadership. In addition, she led research teams and presented on many topics, including employee motivation, women’s
leadership in business, global commerce and digital learning. Through her work and research, Dr. Edmonds also mentored
many undergraduate and graduate students on research and service projects spanning topics including: sustainability,
leadership, employee motivation and technology.
Currently, Jennifer is the Dean of the Georgian Court University School of Business and Digital Media - a role that allows her
to be innovative and creative in her approach to ensuring students and faculty succeed. She entered academia to add value –
to impact young learners first and foremost through teaching and research, but also to be an advocate for underrepresented
students in and out of the business classroom. In her roles as a faculty member and an administrator, for nearly twenty years,
she has done just that. She is now in her third year as dean Georgian Court. Beyond academic and business leadership, she
brings experience in strategic planning, institutional assessment, diversity/multicultural leadership, and student retention -
and lends that leadership to the Monmouth-Ocean Development Council as a Board Member. Outside of work,
Jennifer lives in Howell, New Jersey, with her husband and two children - Kim and Travis, who are both at Howell High
School, and their two dogs, Smoke and Chico. Her oldest son, Darell, is in the US Navy and is stationed in Lemore, California.
Jennifer has only been a part of CJC for two years, and is trying to be more active and more impactful as a member. She has
been instrumentational year after year in the CJC Women’s History Month programming and also on the tech committee.

Annette Scott
Community Service Award

Community Service Award

Annette Scott

Neptune resident Annette Scott is the Vice President of the League of Women Voters of Southern
Monmouth County and the director of its Reenter-Register-Vote initiative, extending voter education
and registration support to formerly incarcerated citizens and those on parole. Since 2018—through the
COVID pandemic—she has grown the program from working with returning citizens in a single office of
the nonprofit NJReentry Corp. to supporting citizens in NJReentry facilities in eight counties. As word
of the program spread, she recruited a team and developed partnerships with other agencies, including
GEO Parole Reentry. When New Jersey law restored voting rights to citizens on parole and probation,
Annette was there, working to educate and register at parole facilities across the state. In the four years
of the Reenter-Register-Vote initiative, Annette and her team have registered an estimated 5,000 citizens
to vote and planted seeds of interest that she hopes will grow into full participation in our democracy for
those they have reached.
Annette has a son, daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren. She is a registered nurse with a Master of
Science in Nursing degree from Monmouth University where she also received her teaching certificate.
She is a board-certified psychiatric nurse and a state-certified mental health screener. She has worked in
surgical trauma intensive care units, pediatric and adult psychiatric facilities, adolescent group homes, and
as a visiting and school nurse.
Annette is the recipient of the League of Women Voters Southern Monmouth County Bill Madden Award
and is featured in Everyday Blackness: Celebrating Exceptional Women, by Parvathi Kumar. The Reenter-
Register-Vote program won the League of Women Voters of the United States 2020 “Building Equitable
Partnerships” Award.
