Martin luther king jr.
● Martin Luther King jr was well known for his
tireless leadership in the civil rights movement
and earned a Nobel peace prize due to his hard
work on nonviolent protest.Dr.King even has a
national holiday in his honor and is also known for
his “I have a dream” speech when he spoke at the
March on Washington protest.Dr.King had many
civil right victories such as the SCLC,March on
Washington,and the Voter Registration
Camp.Dr.King played the most important part in
the Civil rights movement in 1960 he was a very
important spokesperson and a movement leader.
John Lewis
● John Lewis was a U.S representative and was a
internal part of georgia’s history.Through his
leadership in the civil rights movement active in
protests such as 1960 sit in’s also freedom rides in
the 1960s as well.Lewis showed his dedication by
being the chairman of the SNCC.Lewis also
worked with Dr.King as a keynote speaker at the
end of the 1963 March on Washington to seek
jobs and freedom.Lewis always believed everyone
should have civil rights and till this day Lewis holds
as congress for the US congress from the fifth
district.
SCLC
● The SCLC stands for Southern Christian Leadership
Conference.It was a Atlanta based organization
of young college students devoted to civil rights
change.It was led by Dr.King and the organization
was eventually supported by Southern religious
leaders.The SCLC would file class action lawsuits
against the federal government for sustaining
segregated employee cafeterias also planned
rallies,marches,and boycotts to end such
scenarios.The SCLC focused and currently focuses on
healthcare,prison reform,fair treatment of
refugees,and job site safety.
SNCC
● The SNCC stands for student nonviolent coordinating
committee.It’s one of the major civil rights
organizations in the 1960s its purpose was to
orchestrate peaceful nonviolent protest.The SNCC
was responsible for in Albany where a group was at
forefront of the Albany movement and was beneficial
in helping the group later to organize more successful
protest.Then in Atlanta a group did successful sit ins in
1960s.Lastly in Mississippi a group did successful sit
ins,freedom rides,and “freedom summer”.
March on washington
● The March on Washington was in 1963 and over
250000 civil right activist gathered in Washington
Dc to promote their cause and and push for civil
rights legislation which encouraged jobs and
freedom.Also at the march was where Dr.King gave
his famous speech “I have a dream” it supported the
civil rights act of 1964 and the voting rights of
1965.
Albany movement
● The Albany movement was right after the
Montgomery bus boycott in 1955 were southern
cities sought to challenge segregation
laws.Initially the Albany movement wasn't
considered a success because many ended up in
jail or hurt.And to draw more attention to the
cause the SNCC invited Dr.King to take part and
he ended in jail several times.
Lester maddox
● Lester maddox gained notoriety for his unshakable
segregationist stand.In 1947 Maddox opened
Pickrick cafeteria near the campus of Georgia
Tech.Pickrick was only open to white customers
and Maddox refused to serve African Americans or
anyone who suggested integration.Pickrick was
even labeled “Make a wish for
Segregation”.Maddox was completely ignoring the
civil rights act of 1964 that US congress just
passed.Soon after Maddox closed because each
day he wa open he was fined 200 dollars.Because
of his attempt to run for office he appointed more
african americans in office
Civil rights act of 1964
● The Civil rights act of 1964 was finally passed
by the encouragement of the March on
Washington and the US congress.This bill was
signed into law by president Lyndon B
Johnson.The Civil rights act of 1964 forbade
discrimination on the basis of sex and race in
hiring,promoting,and firing.And without
violence most southerners accepted the civil
rights act of 1964.Unlike Georgia they reacted
by ignoring the law and responding with
physical violence.
Brown vs board of education
● The Brown vs Board of education was a
deliberate and extreme case.Until the hearing
court’s decision was racial segregation violated
the 14th amendment and schools did not have
to integrate.Due to this case it caused schools
to integrate but Georgia refused to accept it
and supported “Massive resistance”.
State flag
● In 1956 georgia’s legislators voted to
change the state flag to incorporate
the confederate battle flag when
legislators denied to change in the flag
design a display of opposition to
desegregate the new flag was
designed to almost certainly racially
motivated however it stayed
confederate for 40 years and changed
til governor roy barnes in 2001 then
again in 2004.
Sibley commission
● The Sibley commision was to determine if the
people should resist the federal government or
change school laws to integrate
schools.Throughout the Sibley commission’s
hearings they discovered 60% of Georgians
claimed they much rather choose closer
schools the to integrate.The outcome of the
Sibley commission’s hearings were Georgia
didnt agree to integrate.
Olympics
● The olympics was brought and hosted by
Atlanta in 1996.To prepare for the olympic
games Atlanta started to build new sport
venues,repaired sidewalks,built public
parks,added new hotel rooms,and
revitalized the downtown areas with new
homes and apartments.The olympic games
brought Georgia the removal of the urban
decay and downtown Atlanta was even
having changes like new apartments,new
hotels,and business structures.
Jimmy carter
● Jimmy Carter was a state
senator,governor,and the only person from
georgia to be elected president he even won a
nobel peace prize.Jimmy Carter impacted
georgia as a state senator,governor,and past
president by improving georgia’s educational
justice and mental health systems.Carter also
did camp david peace accord between Egypt
and Israel and Strategic arms Limitation
Treaty.
Maynard Jackson
● In 1973 Maynard Jackson won the
mayoral election because Jackson won
about 60% of the votes.Jackson is
known as the first black mayor of the
southern city and while he was in office
he expanded the airport.Jackson also
helped improve the cities racial
equality by hiring more african
americans and more contractors.Lastly
Jackson along with Andrew young
were the first two mayors of Atlanta.
Andrew Young
● Andrew Young served in Georgia as
congressman vs ambassador and was the mayor
of Atlanta.Young helped organize the SCLC.And
became the first African American since
reconstruction in 1996.His career even brought
the olympic games in 1996 to
Atlanta,Georgia.He also helped bring marta and
the interstate 285 in our everyday lives.
