Anthony didn't disappoint! He identified the car in a jiffy

This isn’t a story. Its absolutely real! Anthony is an

photographer and has published his own book.
But what does Anthony have in common with

WITHDRAWING FROM
AFGHANISTAN
Two weeks after President Joe Biden's
announcement, the United States has formally
begun withdrawing its military troops from
Afghanistan. The US had invaded the country after
the 9-11 attacks and the aim was to dismantle the
terrorist organizations responsible for the attacks
in the US. Though some US Senate leaders are
expressing critical concern over withdrawing
the troops before ensuring the Afghan militant
group Taliban has been defeated, many others
have actually praised the move. However many
Afghans fear that once the troops are gone, their
country will not be able to preserve its modest
gains toward democracy and women’s

WHAT IS AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD)? Energetic
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a difference in the way a child's brain develops.
Such children may have trouble understanding the world around them. Some
may have trouble making friends and fitting in, while others many not be able
to deal with change or can be sensitive to loud noises / crowds etc. Autism is
something people are born with. No one knows exactly what causes it.
Although autistic people struggle with normal things, many of them are brilliant. They
can do remarkable things which others cannot do. The world’s best artists, chefs, scientists,
authors, mathematician, actors have all been autistic.
WHAT AUTISM IS NOT. WHAT SHOULD WE DO? Lovely
It is NOT A TABOO, it is NOT an EMBARASSMENT, NOT CONTAGIOUS and it is NOT a
DISEASE. We should accept autistic people as they are. Be patient, care about them,
listen to them and include them in your life by being good friends to them.
JUNIOR LENS spoke to Anthony’s mother, Ramona Balaz-Schmidt to understand
more about his incredible life – his success, failures and how he overcame the
challenges to come out as a winner!
Marvelous
Courageous
Q: AS A MOTHER, WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THAT YOUR SON
ANTHONY HAD AUTISM?
The signs of autism were there early on, but often doctor’s would brush off
our concerns by saying, “Oh he’s just a boy, he will grow out of it.” Anthony,
being our first child, we didn’t realize what were typical development milestones. I think
most parents are in amazement of what their kids CAN do and often miss the signs of
what they CAN’T do compared to their peers. The first time we heard the word
“Autism” was on the first day of kindergarten. Once he was alongside his
peers, it was apparent that something was different. But then, over time
you realize, although the future is a different one than you imagined, it’s
no less a beautiful one.
Q: WHAT WERE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES
THAT ANTHONY FACED WHILE GROWING UP?
Anthony faced a lot of challenges growing up, he
still does. Mostly in school - with sitting still, paying
attention. He struggles with social interactions; he will
often misread a situation. He also has a lot of sensory
triggers that cause him great discomfort, the sound of
chewing for example he cannot tolerate and that’s why
most times you will see him wearing ear protection. I
think it is very important to begin talking about it and
raising awareness that different is not less.

Q: ANTHONY HAS GOT AN AMAZING MEMORY OF CARS. HOW
DID HE START DEVELOPING HIS HOBBY AND HIS MEMORY
FROM AN EARLY AGE?
From the time he began to speak at around 2 years of age, the first words out of his
mouth were cars. By the time he was 3 years old he could tell you every make and model
of car when you pointed at them. We as parents gave him the support to develop his
interest.
Q: WHAT DOES ANTHONY ASPIRE TO BE IN THE FUTURE? WHAT IS HIS AMBITION?
Anthony aspires to do so many things. He has already published his photography book at the age of 12. He would love to
continue to pursue his photography. He also talks and dreams about opening other businesses, all revolving around the
theme of cars. A car theme retirement community, a restaurant, a charity that gives cars away to people who cannot afford
one. He has a lot of ideas and I encourage him to DREAM BIG.
Q: HOW IS ANTHONY’S RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS PEERS? DOES HE SOCIALIZE WITH THEM?
HOW IS HE TREATED BY THEM?
Things are difficult now with Covid 19 for the last year, since we couldn’t socialize, and he has been home online schooling.
Most of his peer interaction is with other boys with ASD. He really gravitates towards adult friends, it is likely because adults
are more overlooking of quirks and differences. He has a lot of friends in the local car club that he has a connection with
because of the love of cars.
Q: WHAT MESSAGE WOULD ANTHONY LIKE TO GIVE TO THE YOUNG READERS OF JUNIOR
LENS?
Anthony would like to tell them, that whatever your challenges might be you can achieve anything you set your mind to. He
often says, “ it’s just a diagnosis, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a great life.”
Q: HOW HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN TO HIS COFFEE TABLE BOOK? HAVE
YOU PLANNED ANY OTHER BOOKS IN THE FUTURE? DO YOU
HAVE PLANS TO SELL YOUR BOOKS IN INDIA?
The response to the coffee table book has been amazing, he’s sold over 2400 copies. It’s
available on American Amazon and they have options for shipping to India. There
are plans for a second book and hopefully we can find a way to have worldwide
distribution by that time.
Q: WHO IS ANTHONY’S INSPIRATION? WHO IS HIS ROLE MODEL AND WHY?
I don’t think he has one specific person that is his inspiration. Temple Grandin (American scientist) was a huge influence
on him, he had the opportunity to meet her, and she took interest in his photography and that was a huge boost for him and
where he is today. Anthony’s book is dedicated to her.

Ice-Cream Cones
Arnold Fornachou was believed to have invented the ice-cream cone
simply out of necessity. In 1904, he was at the St. Louis World's Fair
running an ice-cream booth when he ran short on paper cups to serve the
scoops in. He was next to a waffle vendor by the name of Ernest Hamwi.
Fornachou bought some waffles from Hamwi, and rolled them into cones to
hold the ice-cream. And that was the moment when cones supposedly became
the mainstream vessels for the frozen treat!

WHAT IS HERD
IMMUNITY?
Dr. Hazari details the science behind
herd immunity, “Herd immunity is where 80 to 90
percent of the community gets vaccinated. That
means the virus cannot affect people anymore
because when it affects me, and I will fight the virus
thanks to the vaccine, and then I don’t transmit to
the other person. So, it’s like this - in a hundred-
person community, if 90 people are vaccinated, the
virus will have nowhere to go, and it will die out.”
