For Kids
What is Geocaching?
Geocaching (pronounced GEE-o-cash-ing) offers you a family-friendly way to teach your children about the
wonders of the outdoors. It's a high-tech treasure hunt that can help engage your kids in the natural world.
How do I start Geocaching?
Find one near your home. There are seven caches located in Florida Caverns State Park. There are also
caches all along the Spanish Heritage Trail. We have over 100 caches in Jackson County. Geocaching.com
has many listed by zip code.
What do I bring Geocaching?
Treat a geocaching-hunt as you would any hike by dressing your kids comfortably for the outdoors and
carrying essential supplies such as water and snacks. To find a cache, you will need a handheld GPS receiver.
How do I look for a cache?
Use your GPS system to locate the cache. You may find the compass view, which gives the bearing and
distance to the cache, to be the most informative screen. It will point you in the right direction while you are
moving but may not be accurate while stopped. Keep an eye on where it is pointing while you are hiking, and
you may be able to guess where the cache is hidden from a distance.
What do you do when you find the cache?
You found it! Congratulations! Now what?
1. Take something from the cache.
2. Leave something in the cache.
3. Write about it in the logbook.
The Bottom Line
Geocaching can be fun for the whole family. Use geocache hunts to introduce your kids to new parks, new
activities and/or the natural history of your area. It also can make a fun addition to your next vacation. Look up
cache locations along highways and near hotels to make travel time more interesting.

SUNSHINE STATE YOUNG READERS AWARD
The Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA)
Program is a statewide reading motivational program for
students in grades 3 through 8, in a collaborative effort
between the Florida Association of Media in Education
(FAME) and the Florida Department of Education
(DOE). The purpose of the SSYRA Program is to encourage
students to read independently for pleasure and to read
books that are on, above, and below their reading level in
order to improve their reading fluency. Sunshine State
books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value,
varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural
representation. The SSYRA committee is comprised of 20
qualified school librarians located throughout the state of
Florida, subdivided into two committees- grades 3-5 and
grades 6-8.
Attention Parents:
The SSYRA program is facilitated through your child's
school. In most cases the school library media specialist
administers the program, registers the school, and
organizes voting. Please see your school librarian to ask
how your child can get involved in the SSYRA program.
Homeschooled students are welcome to participate as well.
Please contact the SSYRA grades 3-5 chair, Shelly
Meneses, or the SSYRA grades 6-8 chair, Ashlee Cornett,
for more information.

The Baptist College of Florida's Music and Worship Division is preparing to host its fourth annual
Worship Arts Camp:Elevate. Designed for high-schoolers and middle-schoolers, the camp's
purpose is to elevate high schoolers and middle schoolers in their ability to sing, play instruments,
participate in worship, operate worship technology, learn creative arts, and more!
Held on The Baptist College of Florida's Graceville campus, students will get the "college
experience," staying in dorms, eating in the dining hall, using the school's recreational facilities,
and getting to know BCF's wonderful music professors. Serving as camp pastor again this year is
Rev. Ryan Shipp, worship pastor at Mandarin Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida. Serving as
worship leader is Rev. Shawn Smith, worship pastor at Hillcrest Baptist Church, Jacksonville,
Florida. From excellent instructors, students will receive lessons on their choice of guitar, piano/
keyboard, drums, bass, a band/orchestral instrument, or voice. Classes include music reading,
choir, worship leadership, worship technology, and creative arts (puppetry, photography, drama).
Evenings will feature youth-oriented worship times, as well as crazy and fun fellowships.
No camp would be complete without water sports, so the group will travel to The Baptist College of
Florida at Blue Springs in Marianna, Florida for swimming, canoeing, and possibly a cardboard
boat race! Elevate is perfect for the youth who wants to grow in musical skills and in relationship
with the Lord. The camp will be extremely beneficial to those who sing or play in a youth praise
band, or sing in a youth choir. But no musical experience is necessary. We hope to see your
young people at Elevate!
