Grammar : Active voice and Passive voice
Active voice
The active voice describes a sentence where the subject performs the action stated
by the verb. It follows a clear subject + verb + object construct that's easy to read. In active
sentences, the focus is on the person or thing that does the action.
Example :
Harry ate six shrimp at dinner.
We are going to watch a movie tonight.
I will clean the house every Saturday.
I ran the obstacle course in record time.
Mom read the novel in one day.
The teacher always answers the students' questions.
The director will give you instructions.
The kangaroo carried her baby in her pouch.
Passive voice
The Passive voice, the focus is on the action itself or on the thing that the action
affects.
- The subject performs the action and typically comes after the action (verb).
- The object is who or what receives the action and typically comes before the
action (verb).
Example :
At dinner, six shrimp were eaten by Harry.
A movie is going to be watched by us tonight.
The house will be cleaned by me every Saturday.
The novel was read by Mom in one day.
The students' questions are always answered by the teacher.
Instructions will be given to you by the director.
The baby was carried by the kangaroo in her pouch.
We can use by in passive sentences to say who does an action. We often use by
when the person who does the action is new information
Example
The Harry Potter books are popular all over the world. They were written by
J.K. Rowling.
The passive with a form of the verb be + past participle. We can use the passive with
all tenses, forms, and modal verbs.
active passive
Simple I usually clean it every day. It is usually cleaned every say.
present
Simple past They arrested him this morning. He was arrested this morning.
Present They’ve completed the project. The project has been completed
perfect
Present He is feeding the cat. The cat is being fed.
continuous
will We will finish the report. The report will be finished.
Past They were repairing the road. The road was being repaired.
continuous
Modal verbs You should answer all the questions. All the question should
be answered.
We make negatives and questions in the passive sentences with the negative form or
the question form of the verb be.
Example
He wasn’t arrested
Was he arrested?
It hasn’t been completed.
Has it been completed?
Defining Passive Voice
When a sentence is in passive voice, the subject is being acted on by the
verb and the subject typically comes after the action. For example:
• Swimming is something I do.
Here, the action is swimming. The subject is I. The sentence is in passive voice, since
the person doing the action (I) is not mentioned until after the action.
Some sentences also contain objects - the thing being acted upon. This can make
it more difficult to determine whether the sentence is in passive voice. For example,
here is a sentence in active voice:
• Anna hits the ball.
Anna is the subject. Hits is the action. The ball is the object.
That same sentence in passive voice reads:
• The ball is hit by Anna.
The ball is the object, not the subject of the sentence. The ball is not doing an
action. Therefore, it should be after the subject (Anna).
How to Change Voice from Passive to Active
In order to change passive voice to active voice, you need to recognize what the
subject of the sentence is and then rewrite the sentence so the subject is performing the
action.
Let's use the following example to understand how to change passive voice to
active voice:
• Extensive training on the new safety procedures was required to be attended by the
maintenance staff.
We can recognize that this sentence is in passive voice because the passive keyword
"was" is used. Also, it's not initially clear who or what the sentence is about.
In order to change the sentence from passive to active:
Step One: Identify the subject of the sentence - who is doing an action? The training is not
doing an action, so it can't be the subject. The only person or thing doing an action here is
the maintenance staff. They are attending training. So, the maintenance staff is the subject
of the sentence.
Step Two: Rewrite the sentence so the subject is performing the action. This sentence could
be rewritten to active voice as follows:
• The maintenance staff had to attend extensive training on the new safety
procedures.
This rewrite makes it immediately clear to the reader who is doing what. The subject is doing
the action.

Grammar : can, could and be able to
can and could
We use can and can't to talk about someone's skill or general abilities:
She can speak several languages.
He can swim like a fish.
They can't dance very well.
We use can and can't to talk about the ability to do something at a specific time in the
present or future:
I can see you.
Help! I can't breathe.
We use could and couldn't to talk about the past:
She could speak several languages.
They couldn't dance very well.
Be able to
You can use “be able to” in the present simple tense. It’s more formal than “can”.
Remember to change the “be” to the correct verb ending for the subject:
I am (am not) able to attend the meeting.
You are (aren’t) able to leave the country without a passport.
He is (isn’t) able to drive a car.
She is (isn’t) able to read without glasses.
We are (aren’t) able to buy a new house.
They are (aren’t) able to walk very far.
In the past, change am, are, is to was or were:
I was / wasn’t able to come to your party.
We were / weren’t able to leave on time.
“Be able to” is also useful in situations when you can’t use “can” or “could”. In English
grammar, you can’t have two modals together. For example, if you want to talk about
ability in the future, you can’t use “will can”, but you can use “will be able to“, because
“be able to” is not a modal.
I will be able to attend the meeting tomorrow.
You will be able to enter the competition.
He will be able to get the next flight.
She will be able to help you.
We will be able to attend the wedding.
They will be able to pass the exam.
In the negative form, use “won’t” (or “will not“):
I won’t be able to attend the meeting.
She will not be able to leave the office before 5pm.
To make the question form, invert “will” and the subject:
Will you be able to come to the party?
Will he be able to lift that box?
