PRESIDENT’S PREFACE
Greetings to our beloved readers and members of ALSA UUM.
Here comes the long awaited ALSA UUM E-Bulletin 2021/22, a
remodelled and improved publication from ALSA UUM
Discovery.
I would like to congratulate and express my sincere gratitude
towards every committee member who unconditionally
contributed to the editorial work. Not to forget the outstanding
ALSA UUM Local Board Members aka content groomers, for
their remarkable accomplishments throughout the tenure that
enriched the content of this E-Bulletin. I am deeply honoured
to be given the opportunity to pencil for the preface of this
masterpiece.
The forerunner of this E-Bulletin is ALSA UUM Discovery, an initiative from the previous tenure.
Although some modification was made this year, both publications still share the indistinguishable
objective, which is to keep a record on every new milestone achieved in the tenure. In the eyes of the
public, this might just simply be an achievement transcript but it is a memory log book for our Local
Board.
It is a challenging year for ALSA UUM as our entire nation is shifting into post-pandemic era, it also
marks an end to the virtual learning mode imposed in the past two years. Most of our Local Board
Members have to adapt with a new environment in the campus as well as physical classes, same goes
to the operation of Association’s affairs. We are the one and only tenure who encountered hybrid
operation in the history of ALSA UUM. As the President of ALSA UUM, my foremost concern is to
ensure the smooth transition of the Association’s affairs from virtual into hybrid mode and I am
grateful to see things settle down really fast. This makes the publication of ALSA UUM E-Bulletin extra
meaningful to witness our peaks and valleys in the transition.
Last but not least, toast for betterment and longevity to the future publications of ALSA UUM E-Bulletin
from the upcoming and more tenures to come.
ALSA Always Be One!

ALSA UUM Freshies Night 2022
Entering Law School is difficult, especially for juniors, as it is not as simple as portrayed
in the Netflix series. Therefore, ALSA UUM intended to organise a welcoming
programme for the juniors. Blood, sweat and tears are the price of the success of the
ALSA UUM Freshies Night "The Greatest Freshman" which was held on 11 December
2021. The Freshies Night is actually an annual event by ALSA UUM and it is a casual
and fun event for law students. Due to the outbreak, ALSA UUM had to organise this
event virtually. As evidenced by the large number of participants, the Freshies Night
achieved its main goal, which was to strengthen relationships among UUM law
students. There was a huge number of law students, especially first-year students, at
Freshies Night.
Moreover, the other goal of Freshies Night is to
discover talented law students and through this
casual event, ALSA UUM managed to discover
three gems in UUM Law School. On Freshies Night,
the participants are entertained by the 3
fascinating performances by the 3 talented law
students. Despite the busy schedule of
performers, ALSA UUM managed to serve the
participants with a stunning and energetic dance
by Tan Kai Yee, perfect touch and melody by a
talented pianist, Jonathan Wee and soothing voice
and vocals of Yap Sin Ying. In fact, through mini
games, lucky draw sessions and special awards
sessions, ALSA UUM managed to establish
connections with the freshmen. 08

LEGAL WEBINAR Legal Webinar 2022
'A DEEP DIVE INTO
ABORTION LAW IN
MALAYSIA'
The ALSA UUM Legal Webinar is an annual event which aims to promote public awareness of legal
issues. For this tenure, ALSA UUM decided to adopt abortion law as the discussion topic in the ALSA
UUM Legal Webinar 2022, namely "A Deep Dive into Abortion Law in Malaysia". This event was
successfully carried out on 29 April 2022. The legality of abortion law in Malaysia is a debatable topic as
it concerns criminal and constitutional law. Some argue that it is an immoral act and some think that
women should be given the right to decide as it concerns their bodies. The public has many
misconceptions about this issue and often criticizes abortion by associating it with murder offences.
Therefore, ALSA UUM intends to create awareness about abortion law in Malaysia among Malaysians,
particularly law students in Malaysia.
We managed to receive more than 300 participants from various academic institutions in Malaysia. The
primary objective of ALSA UUM is to let students grasp insightful knowledge regarding abortion law in
Malaysia. In order to ensure the reliability of the knowledge, we managed to secure three prominent
speakers who are experts in the area of abortion law in Malaysia. We have Ms Petra Gimbad and Ms
Daniella Zulkifli from Reproductive Rights Advocacy Alliance Malaysia (RRAAM), and Ms Kasturi
Puvanesvaran from LAW Partnership. The legal webinar focused on three areas of discussion: general
overview of abortion law in Malaysia, improvement of abortion law in Malaysia; and ways victims can
overcome problems under the current abortion law. As a result, participants get valuable insight through
a thorough discussion led by our three well-experienced speakers.

Local Board Meetings
When we look back to the year before, everything changed when the Covid-19 pandemic hit us. As a
result, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic made online meetings the only answer. We can only
communicate via the "little square box" on the screen. Nevertheless, it does not stop us from having
online teamwork. We are all working together under the same umbrella and with the collaborative
relationships across the organisation, we managed to reach the milestone one after another despite
having challenges.
After countless online meetings, the ALSA UUM
21/22 Tenure Local Board successfully held the first
physical meeting on 23 May 2022! We are excited to
see each other and share our happiness, have
higher productivity and have a wonderful time
together! We sincerely hope that all the work, time
and efforts put in during this tenure may influence
our members and many others. Infinite thanks to all
the committee members for their hard work,
persistence, perseverance, and dedication towards
the Local Board 2021/2022. We hope that every
moment can always be cherished.

ALSA UUM Legax Time is a clubhouse session that connects law students with people within and beyond

the academic syllabus. This online initiative aims to enhance students' insights in respect of the real
practises in the legal industry while building a strong rapport between law students and the alumni.
Unlike formal events, this clubhouse series was conducted in a more relaxed and casual way. The online
initiative was held fortnightly starting from November 2021 except for the last episode and there were a
total of four episodes of Legax Time. Through the series, we invited speakers and the public from various
institutions and even non-legal fields to discuss the trending topics in Malaysia during their weekend

It is a fact that students are indeed very familiar with Canva
which is an online graphic design tool. Canva is very popular
among students nowadays as they often need to use it for
their studies. Various features that are available in Canva
make it the most appealing platform to use in terms of
conveniently designing work. However, there are indeed times
when the students are unable to utilise the features at full
capacity. Therefore, ALSA UUM decided to make a series of
simple and short tutorials on using Canva on ALSA UUM’s

There are a total of 6 episodes of ALSA UUM Canva Tutorial,
which were packed with useful skills and information relevant

Therefore, an online initiative, namely Law School

was organised with a number of objectives in

the initiative focus is to provide as many sharing

Different students, not just the most popular
or best ones, were chosen to be interviewed so
that everyone could feel like they were seen

context, different questions are also prepared

ALSA INTERNATIONAL
Virtual Visit 2021
One of the perks of joining ALSA UUM is the
golden chance to create connections with law
students from other law schools and, in fact, from
other countries. Hence, ALSA UUM participated in
the ALSA International Virtual Visit 2021 which was
organised by ALSA UNAIR on 27th November
2021. This is an external event which was joined
by other local chapters such as ALSA UiTM and
ALSA ATC. This meaningful event comprises two
sessions.
The first session was an academic session, where we
had a fruitful discussion with a well-known dispute
resolution lawyer, Mr. Louis Liaw. Every participant
managed to grasp valuable knowledge from Mr. Louis
regarding cyber law, such as the phishing issue. The
second session was a sharing session between ALSA LC
UNAIR and other Malaysia Local Chapters including
ALSA UUM. The sharing session benefited the
participants as it helped every local chapter, including
ALSA UUM to generate new and fresh ideas. We got
the necessary information about the activities that
were carried out by the other local chapters and ALSA
UNAIR.

We should acknowledge that it

Hence, UUM Malaysia's Next

The event consisted of a workshop which introduced the competition — Malaysia’s Next Advocate to the
UUM law students. Our speaker, Ms Aqila Zulaiqha Zulkifli, gave some insights to the participants regarding
the flow, structure and general rules of the competition that abide by the organisers and participants from
the previous years while clueing in some tips regarding oral advocacy to them throughout the workshop. It
was held on 25th June 2022 before the competition and we received quite an adequate amount of
participation.
For your information, the competition has been organised by Thomas Philip over the years and it was often
held in collaboration with various law student associations and local chapters. The winners of the university
round get to advance and compete in the national round. UUM’s round of Malaysia’s Next Advocate was
held on 3rd September 2022 and two participants were chosen to represent UUM in the national round of
Malaysia’s Next Advocate. The winners are Chuah Kai Sheng and Wong Chee Yong, the former secure
champion while the latter got 1st runner up. Not to forget that the competition could not have been a
success without the precise and constructive feedback from our judges, namely, Ms Rachel Ng Li Hui, Ms
Abigail Shobana Nimbalker and Mr Low Henn Xhen Ravindra Kumar from Thomas Philip. 32

to career pathways that will help students build strategies that are vital for students and should not
be taken lightly.
This project is a joint venture

MERCHANDISES
ALSA UUM merchandise serves as a memorial to tenure 21/22 of
ALSA UUM. Following a brainstorming session, the finalised idea is
that the tote bag will be the main product, with hand sanitizer and
a greeting card as side products. In conjunction with the Hari Raya
festival that was around the corner at the time the merchandise
was released, the theme for it is "Hari Raya" along with "Self-love"!
The tote bag is the most common item used by
almost every student, especially to go to classes or
the library. On the other hand, hand sanitizers will be
useful in providing users with health protection,
particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.Greeting
cards will make it easier if the buyer wants to
purchase the product as a gift for someone else or
even themselves! Thus, these products are indeed
great items to be sold together as a set.

deal with the speakers despite their busy schedule, it was
pretty meaningful and enjoyable for me as I got to equip
