PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Interprofessional practice occurs when multiple service providers
from different professional backgrounds provide comprehensive
healthcare and educational services by working with individuals and
their families, caregivers and communities to deliver the highest
quality of care across settings. Positive outcomes are associated
with successful collaborative practice. The program will present the
four Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) competencies:
values and ethics; roles and responsibilities; communication;
and teams and teamwork. The program will include case study
discussions which highlight the potential application of the
competencies.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Attendees will be able to:
1. Understand and apply the interprofessional core
competencies.

2. Integrate interprofessional collaborative practices to support
case management.

3. Increase understanding of the roles of other allied health
professionals in the education setting.

4. Identify the facilitators and barriers to effective
interprofessional practices via remote learning.

5. Consider best practices and technological requirements for
remote interprofessional work to best meet the needs of
students in school.

PRESENTERS

Michael Salvatore, Ph.D.
School District Administrator

An accomplished educator of nearly 25 years, Dr. Salvatore began
his K-12 experience as a teacher with the Long Branch Public
Schools. He had his first administrative role as a Principal, moving
up to an Assistant Superintendent, and most recently served as
Superintendent for over ten years. His collaborative working style
has allowed the Long Branch Public Schools to make steady
improvements and has empowered both the faculty and the staff.

In addition to his K-12 experience, Dr. Salvatore has taught
graduate-level courses in educational leadership and served
as a doctoral teaching fellow. He has mentored many aspiring
administrators over the years. Dr. Salvatore has received several
honors and is highly regarded throughout the State of New Jersey.
He holds a doctoral degree in instructional and curriculum leadership
and is currently the Senior Vice President of Administration at Kean
University.

Patrick McAloon M.A.
School Administrator

As the Principal of Benway School, a private school for students
with disabilities, Patrick McAloon has collaborated with stakeholders
to provide a comprehensive therapeutic program for our most
fragile students. Patrick has over 10 years of experience in Special
Education. He began his career as an adaptive health and physical
education teacher with a bachelor’s degree from East Stroudsburg
University, and later earned a master’s degree in educational
leadership from New Jersey City University. Patrick is a lifelong
learner who is passionate about fostering social, emotional and
academic success for all students.

Emily C. Zupkus
School Psychologist

Emily C. Zupkus is a School Psychologist at Matawan Regional
High School. Prior to becoming a school psychologist in 2016, Emily
taught fifth and sixth grade science for five years. Emily recently
co-organized a school-wide competition called the Reading Race,
where students in self-contained programs interview, interact with
and cheer on faculty members who are logging how many minutes
they read daily. Emily is currently reading “The Distance Learning
Playbook” by Douglas Fisher and “Circe” by Madeline Miller. Her
most recommended book to any educator is “Closing the Attitude
Gap: How to Fire Up Your Students to Strive for Success” by Dr.
Baruti Kafele.

Ryan M. Devaney, MSW, LSW, M.A.
School Social Worker

A three-time alumnus of Kean University, Ryan earned his bachelor’s
degree in elementary education in 2009, completed a Master of
Social Work degree in 2016, and earned another master’s degree
in educational administration in 2018. In addition, he is also a
licensed social worker. Currently, Ryan is a School Social Worker at
a high school, where he assists students in various ways, including
planning for their futures. For the 2019 - 2020 school year, Ryan was
the recipient of the Governor’s Educational Services Professional
Award for his school. He believes in the importance of social-
emotional learning, kindness and empathy. You will often hear him
say, “In a world where you can be anything, always choose to be
kind!”

Assumpta Ekeh, RN, Ph.D.
School Nurse

Dr. Assumpta Ekeh obtained her doctorate from Kean University
in 2019, and is a certified school nurse with East Orange School
District in East Orange, New Jersey. She is also an adjunct nursing

faculty with the College of Nursing, Seton Hall University in South
Orange, New Jersey. Her professional nursing career has spanned
over 25 years of nursing in the United States and abroad. Dr. Ekeh
is the author and co-author of nursing and health promotion articles
published in peer-reviewed journals.

Lisa Hromoko
Technology Lead

Lisa Hromoko was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey and
graduated from East Side High School. She continued her education
at Kean University where she graduated magna cum laude with
a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and a minor in
psychology. After graduation Lisa decided to give back to her
community and began teaching at Lafayette Street School, where
she taught ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies for nine years.
She is currently a Technology Lead and Teacher Coach, whereby she
assists teachers with infusing technology into their daily instruction.
Lisa also facilitates the integration of technology for health services.

Jennifer Petit-Frere
Parent Representative

Jennifer is originally from Brooklyn, New York, but has called New
Jersey her home for over 20 years. She attended Hunter Community
College in pursuit of an accounting degree but abandoned that field
and switched to business administration. Jennifer has worked in
the healthcare industry on the payer side for 22 years, functioning
in multiple roles. She currently serves as director in the vendor
management area for EmblemHealth, providing daily oversight for
the company’s largest vendor contract. Jennifer’s also the proud
parent of a three-year-old child who has special needs. When not
busy with her young daughter and her schedule permitting, she
enjoys traveling, writing and low-stakes poker.

internationally for the 2019-2021 biennium. Delta Rho at Kean is committed to
