meaning, purpose and commercial functions of packaging.

- Packaging is the container or covering
that something is sold in.

history of packaging :

Depths of prehistory
Between 10,000 and 8,000 B.C., human beings already
needed containers or wrappers to store food or drinks.
These, moreover, had to conserve what they stored in their
interior in the best conditions and even had to serve to
transport these goods when the man of the prehistory went out to hunt.

In the middleage
The middle ages saw a rise in popularity in using wooden barrels
and wood boxes as storage and transportation devices. Barrels were
typically used for travelling across oceans to store items
such as rum, dried food, and fresh water.

19th century
Bubble wrap was invented in 1957 by Sealed Air’s founders Al Fielding
and Marc Cavannes, but it was not first utilized as the protective packaging
material we know it as today. Initially, Fielding and Cavannes were trying to
create textured wallpaper by sealing two shower curtains together
to make air bubbles -- however, this interior decor trend didn’t take off.

purposes of packaging and its commercial functions:

Protection and/or preservation
Provide protection to the product from dirt, insects, dampness and breakage.

Convenience
Provides convenience in the carriage of the product from
one place to another, in stocking and in consuming.

Communication (selling,information)
Effective personal selling addresses the buyer's needs
and preferences without making him or her feel pressured.

Categories of packaging industry

Primary or salespackaging

Primary packaging is the packaging in direct contact with the product itself
and is sometimes referred to as a consumer unit. The main purpose of primary
packaging is to contain, protect and/or preserve the
finished product, particularly against contamination.

Secondary or grouppackaging
This type of packaging is used outside of primary packaging to group a certain
number of products to create a stock-keeping unit, commonly referred to as a SKU.
It facilitates the handling of smaller products by collating them into a single pack.

Tertiary or transportpackaging
Often also referred to as bulk or transit packaging, this type of packaging is used
to group larger quantities of SKUs to transport them from point A to point B
(e.g. from production facility to point of sale). During this stage,
products are handled as distribution units.

Build basic forms of packaging

Paperboard boxes
Corrugated boxes
Plastic boxes
Rigid boxes
Chipboard packaging
Poly bags
Foil sealed bags

The six-sidedbox

six sided packaging box are hardy and doesn't break or get damaged easily. These
materials are very safe.

The pyramid
pyramid-shaped packaging is used as the shape gives the distinct advantage of
storing more of the same item in the same space.

The cone

Cone sleeves will keep the package protected from external influence. Cone sleeves can be
created to ensure that there are no folds, holes and creases along the side and tip of these
printed cone packaging, and also to make sure that there is no dripping.

The cylinder

• Environmental protection. Like paper gift boxes, paper cylinder boxes are made of paper,
which is an environmentally friendly material.
• Cheap price.
• Customized printing customer design.
• It can be used for packaging various products.
• Lightweight but durable

Recognize common packaging materials and their attributes:

METAL

The success of metal can be attributed to its lightness, its polished and noncorrosive surface,
the easy adhesion of polymer films.
The different qualities of steel and aluminum allow packaging products
to be adapted for different needs.

GLASS

• Glass is one of the oldest materials used in packaging.
• Its advantages are numerous: it is transparent, impermeable, does not have an
• effect on the flavor of food and is reusable;
• It is easy to find the material necessary for its manufacture (sand and water).
• Glass also enjoys an image of quality, which companies use to brand their
• products.
• But glass is heavy and needs high energy to be produced and transported.

PAPERBOARD

a pre-cut
cardboard panel which, once folded, would form a box. This made the
transportation of goods much easier and the box became the most widely used
method of packaging. Today, boxes are used to supply us with fragile and high-tech
equipment, such as video recorders and computers.
Paper and cardboard packaging is cheap, lightweight, easy to use and store, and
can be easily compressed.
Over the past few years, the quality of printing onto paper or cardboard has
improved significantly.

CORRUGATED

Corrugated fiberboard is a material consisting of a fluted corrugated sheet and one or two
flat linerboards. It is made on "flute lamination machines" or "corrugators" and is used for
making cardboard boxes.

PLASTIC

The generic name "plastic" encompasses a number of
different types

• PET is used for soft drink bottles due to its ability to
contain fizzy drinks.

• PP is known for its capacity to act as an efficient
barrier to oxygen in the air.

• For frozen refrigerated food, we usually choose
between PET, LDPE and HDPE.

• PP isfrequently applied in the medical sector as it can
withstand sterilisation at 120°.
