reporter was conservation,
Daryl turned his focus more
towards photography while
managing a safari lodge in
Botswana in 1986. Daryl

Were you a committed conservationist before
becoming a wildlife photographer; and if so,
did you embrace photography to promote
your conservation work?
I grew up in a family that spent at least one school
holiday each year in a game reserve, and we counted
many senior rangers and conservationists among
family friends. My first true inkling of conservation
was spending a brief holiday with the legendary
conservationist the late Dr Ian Player, when I was
about nine or 10 years old, and being chased up
a tree by an angry rhino while on a walk with him.
From then on, I wanted to be a game ranger. But
after school and university I ended up as a newspaper
journalist in KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa,
and indeed one of my beats was conservation. Back
then, however, I was a writer, not a photographer. It
was only much later, in 1986, that I turned
