Hello everyone
The directness of young children can be striking at times. We spoke to our two granddaughters via a video chat
during the lockdown (we could not see them in person even though they live in Matua). I asked the younger
granddaughter (aged six) “what do you know?” and she answered “Rosa is dead” immediately. Her direct
answer came as a bit of a shock because we had just got over the loss of our faithful 13 year-old dog, Rosa -
she had got to the point where she could not tolerate any more pain and discomfort. We had to get the vet to
visit us during lockdown to send her off to “sleep”.
The protocol used by the vet was so considerate - she used a very long length of tubing to administer the
medication so that she was maintaining “social distancing” while we spent the last few minutes with Rosa.
**************************************************************************************************************************
The weather was quite unpleasant on Thursday. We live at about 250 metres above sea level and the cloud was
so low that there were whiteout conditions outside. I happened to be at our road gate during the whiteout and
several vehicles went flying up the road at the mandatory 100km per hour. If that was not bad enough, at least
two of the vehicles were white in colour and did not have any lights on! I only knew that they would appear out of
the gloom because I could hear them approaching.

Give Up To Give Back
Hello,
I am reaching out to share our new ‘Give Up To Give Back’ campaign with you that we created to help us
continue fundraising during COVID lockdowns when all of our normal fundraising activities are put on hold. Now
that we are back at Level 2, some of those activities can resume, but, unfortunately, a lot have already been
cancelled. This is a potentially devastating loss of income as we need to raise over $94,000 per week to make up
the $4.9 million shortfall in our operating costs.
Our Give Up to Give Back campaign is an online shop that allows you to donate your lockdown savings towards
the ongoing costs Waipuna Hospice incurs when providing palliative care to patients and their families in our
region. For example, the money you saved on petrol while in lockdown could help us fund the petrol that our
nurses need to visit our patients, or that round of drinks you didn't buy your friends at the bar could help us
provide medical loan equipment to our patients.
Visit https://www.waipunahospice.org.nz/donation-shop/ to learn more.
Any support or promotion you could offer this campaign would be hugely appreciated. The further we can
spread this campaign, the more funds we can raise.
Ngā mihi,
Pazia Moore | Marketing and Communications Manager | WAIPUNA HOSPICE

School Report
Back to school finally, I think our parents must be relieved. Being back at Level two is awesome; however, we are
well aware of the rules that keep us and our wonderful community safe. We must always put hand sanitiser on
when entering and exiting a space, we need to bring a water bottle to keep hydrated because we are not allowed
to use water fountains and we try to keep our distance to about 2m. We use air hugs instead of high 5s or
touching each other. During lockdown we did daily zoom sessions – it was fun. Since we have been back, the
class topics have been writing and presenting speeches and they were amazing, mahi pai tamariki
New Defibrillator
A massive thank you goes to Pyes Pa Tauriko Lions for the generous support and organisation of a community

The defibrillator is easy to operate with simple instructions
included in the red bag inside the secure yellow box. If you find
the need to use the defibrillator be sure to call 111 as instructed
on the yellow box. They will give instructions on the access code
and how to operate the device until help arrives.
In Week 1 of Term 4, we will be celebrating our agricultural
and horticultural heritage with a number of fun activities. Over
the school holidays and first week of Term 4, students are invited
to prepare a range of items. These items need to come to school
for display and/or judging on Thursday 21 October, animals will
be judged including calves, lambs, and goats. Any animals to be
entered must be pre-registered, this is on the Thursday of Week
1 Term 4. This is a great deal of fun.

MONEY MATTER$ Companies and home office expenses
by Nikki Blake
In a recent article in “Agents Answers”, the Inland Revenue Department has stated that if a company uses a
home office that is the home of one of its shareholders, it will not be able to claim a deduction for the office
unless it has incurred the actual cost. This means that if a company’s shareholder or director runs the company’s
business through the home office and pays all expenses relating to the home office, the company has not
incurred any expense and cannot claim a deduction.
If this is you, to be able to continue to claim home office as an expense in your company accounts, you will
need to make payments from the company to your personal bank account to "reimburse" yourself as property
owners for the company use of the home office. It would also be a good idea to draw up a letter/agreement from
yourselves to the company allowing the company to use the office in your home. Talk to your Accountant or Tax
Advisor about how much your home office payments should be.
Under sCW 17 of the Income Tax Act 2007,
a reimbursement paid to an employee in
connection to their employment or service is
exempt income to the employee. Therefore, if
a company reimburses a shareholder
employee for the use of their home office, and
that office is used to fulfil their duties as a
shareholder employee, the payment will be
exempt income. (Note: Look-Through
Companies are a bit different so if you have
one of these, talk to your Accountant or Tax
Advisor)

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori by Nichelle Healy
This month we enjoyed taking part in celebrating Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori in
our centre. The Māori language, as our indigenous language,
is a unique taonga to be treasured and it was a real joy to
embrace te reo Māori and encourage our tamariki to grow and
nurture their bilingual values. On Rātū we learnt ngā tae
(colours) and on Rāmere our focus was ahua (shapes). There
was spray painting, rainbow collage, colour mixing and
blending, rainbow playdough, a colour hunt and lots of
puzzles and toys to help identify colours.
On Rāmere, we built on our ako and used coloured shapes
as a guide in our shape hunt. There was shape cutting on our
playdough table, shape puzzles, shape stamps and stencils in
paint and many shapes to explore in the collage area. We had
so many opportunities to learn and practise the names of the
colours and shapes. We encouraged our tamariki to identify
what colours and shapes they could find in the world around
them, what colours they were wearing, plus what shapes their
blocks and puzzles were. Finally, we enjoyed singing some of
our favourite waiata together.
This week was all about strengthening te reo and we all
learnt that there are many different languages and ways to
communicate what we see and do.
Our sessions run Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:30 -12pm.
We are located next to Pyes Pa School, come along and join
the fun, we offer the first three visits for free!

Sport is thriving at ACG Tauranga
Students at ACG Tauranga love their sport. In fact, according to a survey conducted
by Sport Bay of Plenty, ACG Tauranga has a higher percentage of students involved
in sport than any other school in the Bay.
“I believe that participating in sport at any level helps build relationships, resilience and teamwork skills,” says
Ian Shaw, ACG Tauranga’s Head of Sport, PE and Health. “In addition, it provides a dimension to school life that
enables students to express themselves, build confidence and self-esteem.”
The opportunity to participate in various teams, both competitively or purely for enjoyment, has meant that
sport is flourishing at ACG Tauranga. At primary level, students develop fundamental skills in a fun, yet
challenging, environment before moving into their lower secondary and senior years, where they have the chance
to represent the school in their chosen field.
And thanks to the increasing variety of
sporting codes available at the school now,
more students than ever before are
becoming involved.
“In 2021, we have increased our sports
teams in volleyball, hockey, futsal and
netball. This is in addition to having more
pupils compete than previously in both the
WaiBOP Athletics and BOPSS Swimming
Champs. And during the recent winter
leagues, and we had a total of 17 teams
representing our school colours.”
With some exceptional results already
this year and further growth of the sports
programme planned, students at ACG
Tauranga have a lot to look forward to in the
upcoming summer season.

Plantain a Plenty by Julia Sich, BA, Dip. Hort. (Distinction)
It’s uplifting to go into my spring garden and to see that it is bursting with new energy and growth. Narrow leaf
plantains are looking elegant with masses of tall flower stalks topped with bulrush shaped flower heads adorned
with yellow anthers that dance in the wind. The Buck’s horn plantains are sending up arching flower heads that I
find so attractive. I have some well-established plants now that provide nice greens for salads.
Plantains are globetrotters, having followed us to every continent. They are one of the most common and
numerous ‘weeds’ growing in our gardens and lawns. They’ve been around for centuries, are able to grow in
cracks and the harshest environments and survive. There are two main varieties – Narrow leaf or Plantago
lancelota (a perennial available all year) and Broad leaf Plantago major (also perennial but dies down in winter). I
have a third variety called Minutina or Buck’s horn plantain Plantago coronopus sold by Kings’ Seeds as a salad
vegetable. These are now self-seeding in my garden so I don’t have to re-sow anymore. This variety grows wild
near Paraparaumu beach where the plants were small, compact and sturdy. I could see salt had collected on
their leaves.
Traditionally plantain has been used as a herbal cure for wounds and sores, and for respiratory disorders
including asthma, whooping cough and bronchitis. It’s also excellent for treating bites – make a fresh spit poultice
by chewing up a leaf and applying it or rubbing it on mosquito bites. The results are impressive. The itching
quickly leaves and about 15 minutes later all sign of the bite has gone. Mashed leaves will also stop bleeding. I
heard of a woman using mashed plantain in the abscesses of her horses’ feet with huge success. Nothing else
had worked.
Plantain is also excellent for bee and wasp stings - as Shirley describes in feedback sent to me recently: "Last
night, I was hitching my trailer to the truck. Wasps had made a nest in the square tube of the trailer tongue. I was
stung 3 times on the pinky finger. Within minutes, my hand had swollen to my wrist. I was miserable with it all
night despite using cortisone cream. Today my nephew told me about using narrow leaf plantain. He picked a few
leaves for me. I chewed one and rubbed the spit and weed juice over my finger and hand, then ate a leaf. Within
15 minutes, the redness and itching was subsiding and the pain was gone. 4 hours later it was hurting a little so I
ate another leaf and I am comfortable again now. What a remarkable plant!!!!"
All plantain varieties are high in protein, crops of it being grown to fatten lambs, not to mention the protein they
can provide to us. They also contain vitamins C, E and K, boron, calcium, iron, magnesium, molybdenum,
potassium and sulphur.
Young leaves of all three varieties are good in smoothies and can be used finely chopped in salads. For variety
I blend just plantain leaves and strain the liquid, drinking the nourishing green juice and slathering the pulp on my
face for a 30-minute face
pack. I enjoy a cup of
plantain tea daily, made
with one leaf. Not only is
it very pleasant, it
supplies magnesium and
vitamin K, which can
ease muscle cramps.
Plantain tea is also
calming and soothing for
digestive complaints
including indigestion,
heartburn and IBS. This
is a valuable friend to
appreciate in our
gardens.

Hi from Jane Nees,
Your Bay of Plenty Regional Councilor
Protecting our Marine Environment
Recently, I was fortunate to see a presentation by Professor Chris Battersill, Chair in Coastal Science at the
University of Waikato – a position that is funded by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council. He outlined the
considerable growth and success of the Coastal Marine Centre in Tauranga and its research projects that
have huge potential to add value to the Bay of Plenty economy and environment.
He talked about the work underway to develop a marine spatial planning tool for Tauranga Harbour that has
potential to be used more widely in coastal marine areas. This is exciting because relatively little is known
about New Zealand’s marine species, but we do know that our oceans are under pressure and that there has
been a decline in biodiversity and habitat because of human activity. In addition, Government is signalling that
its proposed Spatial Planning Act (one of three intended to replace the Resource Management Act) will
include a requirement for marine spatial planning.
In the Bay of Plenty, this has been foreshadowed by a decision by the Environment Court, following an
appeal against the Bay of Plenty Regional Coastal Environment Plan. Regional Council was directed to
introduce rules to establish a Motiti Protection Area (MPA) because the Environment Court identified that the
biodiversity and cultural values of these reefs were particularly special and needed protection. This marine
protection area is the only one of its kind in Bay of Plenty and the decision a first for New Zealand.
The MPA is now in place, meaning people can no longer take any kind of marine life from the three offshore
reef areas surrounding Motiti Island. Now that the rules are operative, Regional Council staff will be out on the
water with a focus on making sure that people understand the rules and why they are in place.
In addition, the Regional Council has been working with dive clubs to find a way to allow safe anchoring in
the area. Anchoring risks damaging the vulnerable plants and animals that the rules have been introduced to
protect. Guidelines on anchoring are available on the Regional Council website and anyone wanting to visit
the area is asked to please check them out to see how people can anchor safely at the reefs without causing
damage.
For more information on the Motiti Protection Area please visit www.boprc.govt.nz/mpa If you would like more
information on the regional council or any other issue, contact me on [email protected] or ring me on 07 579-5150.

Biggest Loser is back for 2021! by July Hebbel
Is your cat or dog the Bay’s Biggest Loser? After the success of last year, our Healthy Weight Management
Program is back for another year.
Are you concerned about how your cat or dog’s weight is affecting their overall health? Tauranga, Te Puna,
Katikati and Papamoa Village Vets want to help your pets live happier and healthier lives by addressing the major
health issue that is obesity in our animals.
Starting in October, all cats and dogs in the Bay of
Plenty are invited to participate in The Biggest Loser
Healthy Weight Management Program, a program
designed to manage healthy weight loss in a supportive
and educated way over 12 weeks, all the while taking
home numerous milestone prizes and having the chance
to win some major grand prizes.
Prizes include food vouchers, free nail clips, pet toys
and more. At the end of the program, one cat and one
dog will be crowned ‘The Biggest Loser’ and each will
receive a $500 clinic credit. The overall grand prize
winner (selected randomly) wins a holiday on us with a
$500 Bachcare® voucher!
The Managing Director, David McDonnell, says that,
although the program comes with all the bells and
whistles of freebies and prizes, it really comes down to
the overall wellness of your pet. “Making the decision to
invest your time and thought into the health of your pet
should be commended,” he says.
Sign your cat or dog up to our Biggest Loser 12 week
Healthy Weight Management Program today! It’s free to
register. Participants have until October 11th to sign up.
Call us on 0800 838 7267 if you need further information.

FOOD GROWERS GROUP
Who doesn’t enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables, especially if we grow it ourselves? Do you:
Have or want to have a home garden?
Have an idea about beginning your own garden?
Have a desire to get to know more and learn about growing food?
Have an interest in food growth and production?
Have knowledge and/or suggestions you like to share?
Have a large/commercial operation?
Enjoy meeting and chatting to locals?
Come and join us - we are a casual friendly group, meeting on the third Sunday of each month to share ideas
about growing food. Our get-together includes observation, discussion about home-grown food and gardening
(techniques, hints, what works and why we did such and such) and an afternoon tea.
Thankyou to Jenny & Allan for hosting our get-together this month. We had such a lovely welcome,
particularly by all of the tui in the kowhai tree at the front door! Jenny and Allan have lived at their
property for only 18 months; the vege gardens (including shade house) are so prolific that they are
self-sustaining, as well as keeping family and friends supplied with fresh vegetables. There are some
fruit trees, including espaliered figs and grapes. Allan has plans for landscaping one particular area
to become orchard, food forest and also a native tree area. We were shown around the plastic house.
There are 130 passionfruit vines growing here as well as fig trees, which Allan has pruned to become
espaliered for ease of picking, blueberries and green & red grapes. Outside, as well as the vege
gardens, and fruit trees, the 3 chickens were doing their best to wreak havoc in all of the gardens.
Next Meeting: Warren & Anita (Oropi Gorge Road)
Sunday, 17th October, 2.00pm
Sunday, 21st November 2.00pm Maureen & Jean ( Joyce Road)
