Deadline for Dec 2019 Issue: Friday, Nov 29

Hello
The end of 2019 is fast approaching and so is the decade. This decade we have got married, had two children,
many outdoor adventures, and lost a few special people along the way. This year has been the year for our
family to check in and take stock of where we are at and where we are going. Counting our blessings, taking
time in together, taking time out, and setting some foundations for our future. What will the next decade bring?

I recently started feeling a little lighter, let go of a few things that weren’t working in our family’s best interest and
made a few choices that were the best use of my energy going forward. One of the tools I acquired recently in a
workshop was to make the most of your time, set the timer (5, 15, 30 minutes), put away the distractions and
achieve as much as you can of your task. If not finished take a break, have a coffee or do some exercise and
then do another time limit, set the time and get back into it. Its amazing how much energy can be created from
achieving a task, or at least making a dent in a huge project.

Thanks again to the team for bringing me on board as editor assistant. It has been a pleasure.

Siobhan Moran

Gain Ctrl (control) of your emotional wellbeing this
festive season with an Esc (escape) from technology

You will often hear the expression “the most valuable gift you can give is your time.”
And it’s true. In this hectic day and age it is a privilege to spend quality time with
those you love. People are often busy running around during the year with numerous
commitments. The festive season is the perfect opportunity to make some time to reconnect and reflect.

At Waipuna Hospice, we see patients who have no or limited family support during the most difficult moments of their lives. This
could be for a number of reasons, their families may be living abroad, or constrained financially and unable to travel or they have an
estranged relationship with relatives. Whatever the reason the team at Waipuna Hospice spend quality time with every patient
providing comfort and support. This support continues over the festive season.

There are many small acts or gestures families can do to gain some quality moments together. Simply, telling family stories and
looking at photos can provoke many cherished memories.

Another activity could be leaving messages. The Waipuna Hospice Remembrance Tree appeal is an opportunity to write a special
message to those that are with us and those we may have lost and will not be sharing Christmas with us this year. In recognition of
the people that hold a very special place in our hearts, the Waipuna Hospice Remembrance Tree appeal is an opportunity to share
your thoughts and messages with them. Be sure to make a small donation in exchange for a card to write your message to the
person that you are thinking of. Please give generously, as your donation will go towards helping Waipuna Hospice care for patients
and their families during the festive season.

Volunteering with family or friends is a great way to spend a few hours together in the Christmas spirit. The significance of quality
time is important for creating bonds and strengthening family ties. It has been proven that those families who enjoy group activities
develop strong relationships and handle stressful situations with ease. Stronger bonds are created with each other through
volunteering, as it involves teamwork and communication. Volunteering offers vital help to people in need, worthwhile causes, and
the community, but the benefits can be even greater for you, the volunteer. Volunteering and helping others can help you reduce
stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose, connecting you with others.

Waipuna Hospice are looking for volunteers to be a friendly face and help people in our community write a special message to
someone they love to place on our Remembrance Trees. We have over 50 Waipuna Hospice Remembrance Trees. The
Remembrance Trees are located in; Bureta, Bayfair, Bethlehem, Brookfield, Greerton, Katikati, Mount Maunganui, Omokoroa,
Papamoa, Pyes Pa, Tauranga CBD, Te Puke, Te Puna, and The Lakes. If you have an hour or two to spare and would like to help to
raise money for people in our community with a life-limiting illness please register online at waipunahospice.org.nz/trees. If you have

Tēnā koutou katoa,
Welcome back for term 4. As this year comes close to the end, we welcome some amazing fundraisers and events such as our Pyes Pā
School Gala, our senior school athletics, our bi/triathlon, school camps. We can not wait to enjoy the remainder of this term.

At the end of term 3 our school entered the MADE awards - Movie and Digital Excellence. Our senior team and one junior class worked
on entries in this competition as part of their Term 3 Inquiry. We are proud of all our students and teachers for the entries submitted and
special mention to the following, whose entries have made the finals which take place at Baycourt on Friday 15 November:
● Y1-3 Storytelling "Legend of Mauao" by Room 3
● Y4-6 Music video "This is Me"(18+ students)
● Y4-6 Powerful image "Knowing who you are will set you free" by Emily
● Y7/8 Photography "A walk with my Grandfather" by Bradlee

As the weather is turning to summer, the days are getting warmer which means we need to wear our hats and are looking forward to the
many summer activities including athletics, swimming and our annual bi/triathlon.

This weekend is a long weekend due to Labour Day which means on Monday 28th of October there will be no school.
So enjoy the long weekend everyone! On the 2nd of November, Week 3, Pyes Pā School will be holding our PTA School Gala. We will
be having lots of fun games like a dunking stall, inflatables, a paintball gallery, digger fun, food, stalls and many more enjoyable rides and
games. Anyone is welcome and we are encouraging all of our community to come and enjoy their time with us. Raffle prizes are also being
sold through our school office with many great prizes to be won!
On the day, we will also be having a White Elephant sale so if you have any items such as furniture, toys, outdoor items, games and
kitchen items we’d appreciate any donations. The School Gala starts at 10am and concludes at 2pm.
We look forward to seeing you there to support the efforts of our PTA who are fundraising for a new school
playground.
Lastly in Week 3, our year 7/8 students will be attending the Tall Poppies Athletics, at the Tauranga Domain while the Y4-6 students
from the senior school will also be participating in our school athletics competition. We wish everyone the best as they participate and
demonstrate our school values of respect, courtesy, honesty, excellence and
responsibility.

Acknowledging those who help

by Lauren Shaw

We had our AGM this month; at this meeting we celebrate our achievements, reflect on the year that has been
and what is coming up for the future and we also decide our new officeholder roles. All of our key roles have
been filled with members who are excited about taking on new positions within our centre. We are a non-profit,
parent-run organisation and we rely heavily on all our members to volunteer to take on roles and to contribute to
the running of our centre. In order for our centre to stay active and keep sessions open, we have key roles that
people undertake including, president, treasurer, secretary, property, education and health and safety. We are
extremely lucky to have some very knowledgeable ladies who embrace these roles and work with enthusiasm to
keep our little centre ticking along.

This year we are saying goodbye to some members who have, over many years, gone above and beyond
expectations. Three of these ladies are Laraine Cubbin, Fiona Jesson and Nicki Jackson. As a centre, we would
like to extend a huge thankyou to them for all their incredible support and hard work, and, of course, we will miss
them dearly.

We are always keen to have new people join us, if you would like to find out more about what we do, we will
have a stall at the Pyes Pa School gala day on
Saturday November 2nd between 10am - 2pm, we will
have playdough set up for the children to play with

lots of wonderful members there to chat about
Playcentre. If you can’t make this we are open during
school term times on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9.30
-12pm and cater from newborn babies to school age.
Our philosophy is that children learn through play, and

Senior Move Management

Four years ago, Margaret Engelander arrived in Tauranga to set up a new concept business, Over & Above
Moving, as a Senior Move Manager, and in October this year moved into 414 Pyes Pa Road with her sister
company Secondhand Avenue.

Margaret and her team of caring professionals specialise in
helping senior family members downsizing, move into a
retirement home or assisted living. “We understand when
family members feel pressure when they don’t live in the same
area as their family, are busy with work and other
commitments such as family, but really want to help their
loved ones with the moving process. We all know how hard
moving is, both on a physical and emotional level, but our
team genuinely enjoy being able to make this process easier
on everyone involved and reduce the ‘overwhelming’ feeling
that comes with these milestone moves.“ says Margaret.

When faced with a house full of items and hundreds of
decisions to make, Over & Above Moving have a close, well-
organised team on hand. We can help pack and sort, sell or
dispose of unwanted items and we can even help with
presenting the home ready for sale.

With gentle and expert guidance, clients and families are
able to focus on the important decisions, without having to
“sweat the small stuff” as Over & Above Moving takes care of
the finer details and the heavy lifting, so to speak.

Margaret is currently looking for casual staff to help with the
business so please give her a call if you think you might be a
suitable fit.

We offer an empathetic service with the utmost discretion.
Margaret can be contacted on 0800 22 88 24 or you can visit

Daisy – The ‘Day’s Eye’ by Julia Sich, BA, Dip. Hort. (Distinction)

Daisies are thick in lawns at the moment, mostly in shadier spots in
lawns, untended places and parks. I’ve recently seen huge thickly
flowering patches in Yatton Park in Greerton, Tauranga where I went
walking with our visiting Australian family. Claire my 15 year old
niece made a daisy chain and wore it in her hair, an expression of her
delight in seeing so many of these dainty spring fresh flowers.

While this plant appears small and low to the ground with the
starlight bright flowers there’s more to it than you might think. It’s also
sometimes called English daisy and is a perennial that grows in a
rosette with dark green spoon-shaped leaves and pretty flowers with
white petals, often red-tipped, radiating out from a yellow centre. Its Latin name Bellis means pretty
(isn’t that apt) and perennis means perennial. The flowers, one per stalk, close up at night (‘day’s eye’ is
the origin of ‘daisy’) and on cloudy days. The stalks are leafless but hairy and grow up to 15 cm tall if
not mown down. The leaves narrow to a broad stalk going into the centre of the plant. It normally
flowers from spring to autumn but it can flower in a mild winter.

This little gem of a plant has an amazing range of applications. The flowers (though strong tasting)
and leaves can be added to salads, soups and smoothies. The whole plant has a great reputation as a
wound healer. Doctors accompanying Roman legions collected sacks of it to extract the juice and apply
it to battle wounds, and ointments can also be made for bruises or wounds.

To make an ointment you first need to gather the fresh flowers (they need to be completely dry) and
place them in a jar with a plastic lid. Fill the jar with cold pressed olive
oil. Make sure all the air bubbles rise to the top. Add more oil until
the jar overflows a little. Then add the lid, label with the date and put
in a cool place for six weeks. After six weeks strain the oil. You can
use as it is on bruises (It is said to be more effective than Arnica
which makes sense for us as daisies are local and plentiful. Arnica
has to be imported.)

Measure the oil and place in a double boiler. Next measure the
beeswax. For 100ml oil you’ll need 10gms beeswax i.e. 10%. Heat
the oil and the beeswax until the beeswax melts, then pour into jars
and cap.

An infusion of the fresh and dried flowers is used as a blood purifier
and for treating nasal congestion, rheumatism, arthritis, and liver and
kidney disorders. Chewing the fresh leaves is said to be a cure for
mouth ulcers. An insect spray can be made by pouring boiling water
on the leaves, I want to try this. I suspect few people know the
benefits of this humble little daisy. Till next time…

Hi from Jane Nees,
Your Bay of Plenty Regional Councilor

Getting on with Council Business

I wonder how many of you, like me, are very pleased that the whole local body election process is behind us!
There was a lot of interest and numerous candidate meetings in the western Bay, and discussion and
engagement was robust. This was excellent - but I was disappointed in the political one-upsmanship and
negativity that some people engaged in, particularly in the Tauranga City elections. For those that like
political games and sensationalism, I suspect that Tauranga City Council will be the gift that keeps on giving,
until some firm leadership and team-building delivers dividends.

Fortunately there was little of this negativity in the Bay of Plenty Regional Council election. I was delighted
to have been re-elected to represent the western Bay of Plenty of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council,
together with Norm Bruning. Thank you if you were one of the 7,019 people that voted me in. I am also
pleased to have been re-elected by Council as its Deputy Chairperson.

Regional Councillors have just completed a three day planning session to get to know one another, to
establish ourselves as a cohesive team, to bring the three new Councillors up to speed, and to review our
strategic priorities for the three years ahead. I have to say -, I am thrilled with the calibre of our new
Councillors, and I believe we have a very strong and capable council, who are determined to make a real
difference, particularly in areas like fresh-water, climate change response and public transport. There is a lot
of change coming our way from Central Government, and we will have to be innovative to deliver our normal
work programmes while adjusting priorities to meet the new challenges ahead.

One thing I really liked was a saying we came up with to describe how we want to work over the next three
years. It was:
Tread lightly;
think deeply;
speak kindly;
and act wisely.
If we all did this,
the world would
certainly be a
better place!

This is my story by Dian Cheyne

September 4th 2010 at 4am changed the lives of everyone living in Christchurch. A 7.1 earthquake rocked the
city and our home, Little did I know that this was to be the beginning of many more quakes and life-changing
experiences for me (there were 12000 aftershocks).

After being ill for some time and back and forth to the Doctor continually with bleeding from the bowel, I was
the same as so many other people at that time - bowel problems diagnosed as being stressed by the quakes
and living conditions.

However, back to the Doctor again, I said “do you think I have irritable bowel syndrome, Doctor?”. “I know
we will send you to the Nursing Clinic and get your diet sorted out”.

They told me there and then that I probably had cancer.
An emergency Colonoscopy was ordered and sure enough stage 3 Rectal Cancer with a large tumour. On
July 10th 2011, a round of Chemo and Radiation was used to reduce the size of the tumour and, on 25th
October 2011, it was removed successfully. Now I had a Colostomy bag and another round of Chemo.
During this time I get a phone call from the hospital, something had shown up on my scan and I needed to
come immediately. I asked my church to start praying.
The Doctor greeted me and said “my gosh, you gave us a scare; we thought that the cancer had returned”. I
said I had people praying for me. Most of the Medical Profession are not into this faith thing, so his words to me
were “there was something there and now there is not”.
At that time, I had had the bag for 7 months.
I managed quite well but longed for the reversal to come so that I could be normal (I thought).
On 24th June 2012, I had the reversal. Unfortunately, this was not good for me.
If I had been told how hard this would be I would never have gone ahead with it.
Constant diarrhoea and up to 23 times a day on the toilet, For 4 years I put up with no control over my bowel
and I had some pretty embarrassing moments (many reversals are very successful).
By now we had been paid out for our house rebuild and we moved to Tauranga.
Because now I didn’t have Cancer, I had a dilemma waiting to get into the health system. However, after
being told “February, March, June, July” on the 29th Sept 2016, I had an ileostomy and I have never regretted
going back to “The Bag.”
This life changing operation has given me a wonderful quality of life but “never” think that having a bag is the
End of your Life! You have been given a second chance…and some people don’t get that.
I have had opportunity to speak to people before and after surgery. I love journeying with people to
encourage them that there is light at the end of the tunnel, these life-changing operations are a medical
miracle.
I am so grateful that I live in
New Zealand where we have
access to good Doctors,
Nurses and Hospitals and we
get our appliances for free - a
lot to be thankful for.
Today I Line-dance,
Garden, teach Craft and
Walk. I am also President of
the Western Bay of Plenty
Ostomy Society. I want to
give something back to the
community and I am grateful
that I am living this second
chance I have had at life.

Are you up to date with new Disbudding guidelines? by Dr Phil Rennie

As from 1 October 2019, it will be a legal requirement that all cattle being disbudded/dehorned will need ‘an
appropriately placed and effective local anaesthetic that is authorised by a veterinarian for the purpose of the
procedure’. This is true for all methods of horn tissue removal including hot iron cautery, scoop dehorning,
amputation dehorning and caustic paste; which is no longer appropriate.

In addition to this, anyone disbudding/dehorning must: be experienced with, or have received training in, the
correct use of the method being used; and be able to recognise early signs of significant distress, injury, or ill-
health so that prompt remedial action is taken or advice is sought.

The three options available moving forward are:
 Veterinary staff can perform the procedure (disbudding/dehorning),
 Veterinary Operating Instructions (VOIs) can be provided for local

anaesthetic for non-veterinary providers to proceed,
 Disbudding training and assessment for veterinarians to train non-

veterinary/ farm personnel to administer local anaesthetic effectively, and
disbud calves. That is farmers who disbud their own calves will need to
be trained by their veterinarian to administer a local anaesthetic block.
Pain relief is essential for disbudding and it improves recovery. Training is
required before administering local anaesthetic. The most common method of
administering local anaesthetic, via a cornual nerve block – it requires patience,
technical competence and practice to be effective consistently. A bleb block is
an alternative method of achieving pain relief – it’s quicker and effective
consistently. Local anaesthetics available in New Zealand last about two hours,
so a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug or long-acting topical anaesthetic can
be used to extend pain control.
At Tauranga Vets we provide a calf disbudding service where we ensure buds
are removed effectively at the correct time with minimal pain and discomfort. If
you have further questions or want to have a chat with us to make sure you’re
up to speed with requirements, contact us on 0800 838 7267.

OROPI AND PYES PA
FOOD GROWERS GROUP

Our meeting at Warren’s was most enjoyable, we discussed co-sufficiency By Noni Parr
(something we will investigate further) and pest control.
Warren and Annetta then showed us around their beautiful property – they have only
been there a few months. The previous owners were clearly also keen gardeners, so
Warren & Annetta are enjoying the mystery of discovering what plants appear as and when they do. For having
only been there a short time, they have still managed to put some of their own ideas into place and have put in
an extensive amount of work, Warren says he likes to be a ‘no dig’ gardener and is working towards that.
If you are interested in growing food, we encourage you to join us. We are a casual friendly group, we meet the
third Sunday of each month to share ideas and enjoy our own food. Our get-together includes observation,
discussion about home-grown food and gardening (techniques, hints, what works and why we did such and
such) and an afternoon tea.
