Hello everyone

Joyce has been beavering away over the last three weeks and has contacted all of the Newsletter’s advertisers
to see if they would like to continue advertising for 2021. Nearly all of them were keen to continue with their
support of the Newsletter - thank you so much.

Not only does the income from the advertising ensure that the Newsletter continues to thrive, but the surplus is
given back to the community. The observant reader will see that it is mentioned in the Financial Report on page
15 that $5300 was donated to organisations within the Pyes Pa area.

Catherine has been busy too by reminding all of our regular contributors that it is time to get back in the groove
after the break of two months and they have responded with their usual enthusiasm - it makes my job easier to
know that all of those white spaces are going to be filled with interesting articles.

Pyes Pa School students are heading back to school on February 3rd and looking forward to an exciting 2021.
This year comes with some staffing changes. We are sorry to have to farewell Catherine Fitzpatrick and

Deirdre Sadd who have been friendly and helpful faces in our school office for many years between them. We will
also miss Brendon Oats who has accepted a teaching role at
Tauranga Special School, and Pam Miedema who after many
years of service to teaching will now enjoy her retirement. We
welcome Tonia Robertson to the office role. Tonia has many
years of experience and is a Pyes Pa local. We also welcome
back Rose McLiver from her maternity leave, and new teacher
Logan Donnelly to our senior teaching team. Logan has been
working in education for the past 7 years and joins us from Mt
Maunganui Primary.

In preparation for 2021, staff attended teacher only days on
January 27th and 28th and enjoyed training for the Pause,
Breathe, Smile programme. This programme helps children to
recognise and manage their emotions with mindfulness
techniques. It will be wonderful for the wellbeing of both our
children and staff. This year we will also continue our focus on
our localised curriculum, PB4L, learning through play and many
more exciting initiatives in the school.

If you would like more information about where our school is
headed, feel free to visit us at our Facebook Page or at our
website http://www.pyespa.school.nz

We would also like to acknowledge the anniversary of the sad
passing of our former Deputy Principal Sue Walmsley, and our
thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.

We look forward to seeing you at school this year.

Improved trapping helps knock possum numbers down

Pests such as possums, rats and stoats are the biggest threat to the kiwi, kōkako and other species at
Ōtanewainuku. Kiwi eggs, for example, stand only a slim chance of making it through to hatching if left
in the burrows. They are more often predated upon and don’t make it without human help. That’s why
so many hours’ work go into
looking after these birds,
plants and insects from the
volunteers at Ōtanewainuku
Kiwi Trust.

We are seeing good
progress though, and,
throughout 2020, 479
possums were trapped using
modified sentinel traps. That
is a pleasing result and
should have really knocked
the possum numbers down.
That total of possums caught
is now over 520.

Thanks to the generous

We Are Back by Nichelle Healy

After a long summer’s break, Pyes Pa Playcentre are
excited to be back in action for 2021.We ended last
year with a splash by celebrating 2020 with a summer
pool party. Our tamariki enjoyed the water slides,
paddle pools, and an afternoon BBQ with our
whanau.

Over the summer break, a team of mums have
been working hard to make improvements to our
outdoor play area to cater for all of our children’s
interests and abilities. Our most recent addition is a
natural log play area where our tamariki are able to
practise balancing and climbing over logs and tree
stumps. We would like to give a big thankyou to Kevin
and Jane from “Teacher In The Paddock” and to one
of our very own Playcentre families for their generous
donations of wood logs. We are also looking forward
to the addition of a water wall, music wall, mini race
car track, mud kitchen, and a ninja line in the near
future

Our first session back is Tuesday 2nd February
and we would love to welcome any new families who
would like to join us. Our sessions run Tuesdays and
Fridays from 9:30 -12pm. We are located next to
Pyes Pa School, and offer the first three visits for free!
We hope to see you soon.

ACG Tauranga dance programme creates exciting new
opportunities

Dance empowers students to unleash their creativity and to be expressive; and
students at ACG Tauranga love this vibrant new addition to their curriculum.

Introduced at the beginning of 2020, the school’s dance programme has seen incredible growth, and now
includes twice-weekly specialist dance classes in the Preschool and compulsory dance for Years 0 to 6. And with
almost 30 per cent of Year 7 to 10 students choosing to take dance in 2021, this growth is set to continue.

ACG Tauranga Principal Thea Kilian is delighted to see increased participation in the subject and attributes
this to the expertise, passion, and popularity of dance teacher Dani Archer.

“Dani’s strength is her ability to support, acknowledge and empower every dancer, regardless of the style of
dance they do or the level they are at,” says
Thea. “Whether she is supporting those trying
dance for the first time, or top-end dancers in
competitions such as DanceNZMade, the
students love her.”

For Dani, the chance to develop a dynamic
new dance programme at the school has
been a dream come true.

“I’ve really enjoyed seeing our students
achieve new skills and find their passion for
dance, and I’m so proud to see more and
more students – particularly boys – get
involved,” she explains. “I’m excited to see
more growth in 2021, and we have plenty of
exciting plans in the pipeline”.

Tauranga, please join them for their next

SGpiafctesosf a MnewONkiwEiYchMickAfTorTŌEtaRn$ewainukuUpcoming tax changes

by Nikki Blake

Welcome to 2021 – a month of the new year has gone by already! Life never stands still and neither does tax
legislation. Following are some changes coming into force soon that may affect you:
New top personal income tax rate of 39%
A new top tax rate of 39% will apply on personal income more than $180,000 for the 2021-2022 and later tax
years. For most taxpayers this begins on 1 April 2021. If you are going to be affected by this change you may
need to adjust your provisional tax payments throughout 2021 to account for the larger year-end tax bill. Talk to
your accountant or business adviser about this change.
Increased disclosure requirements for trusts
Trusts will be required to provide more information on their annual returns for the 2021-2022 income year
onwards, including distributions and settlements made in the income year, profit and loss statements and
balance sheets. This is to ensure the Inland Revenue Department has a clear picture of how a trust is being
used and whether the usage changes because of the personal income tax rate change. The Inland Revenue
Department can also request the information from trusts for prior years back to the 2013-2014 tax year as
appropriate. This allows for comparable information to be gathered. (Note: the increased disclosure
requirements do not apply to non-active trusts, charitable trusts and trusts eligible to be Māori authorities)
Changes to the Small Business Cashflow Loan Scheme
Applications will remain open until 31 December 2023. The loan will now be interest free for 2 years (up from 1
year), and restrictions on how the loan can be used have eased. There are also changes to the eligibility criteria
that came into effect from 28 January
2021. The change in the decline in
revenue test will change significantly

time-period will no longer include the

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) by Julia Sich, BA, Dip. Hort. (Distinction)

Happy New Year to everyone! I’m kicking off this new year with a very common weed called Yarrow that is
overlooked and undervalued often. It is a perennial plant with feathery finely cut leaves – hence its name
‘millifolium’, thousand-leaf. It grows in patches on cultivated land, road sides, waste areas, lawns or in pasture
and spreads by creeping underground roots. It has a pleasant smell and sends up tall flower stalks about 50cm
high with flat clusters of white or occasionally pink flowers (ornamental varieties have yellow or red flowers).

Yarrow has been used medicinally since the time of the warrior athlete Achilles and it is named after him. He is
said to have healed his battle wounds with yarrow and carried it with him to bind the wounds of his soldiers.
Yarrow has astringent (meaning “to bind fast”) properties for healing wounds. To use it to stop bleeding, crush or
chew the leaves and apply to the wound. It is also used in the treatment of all fevers, haemorrhages, diarrhoea,
respiratory illnesses and rheumatism.

In addition, sipped as a tea and a wash, it prevents flu and virus symptoms and itching of chickenpox and
shingles (when combined with dried elderflower). Use ½ tsp dried yarrow and ½ tsp dried elderflower and infuse
in 1 cup boiling water for 3 minutes and drink when warm. Use 1-3 times a day until symptoms improve. I have
also used it in a bath when I had an itchy rash. Infuse 2 T yarrow and 2 T elderflower in a litre of water, strain and
pour in the bath water. The yarrow opens the pores of the skin to release fevers/viruses, flu/colds; clears chest
infections and reduces the itch of rashes.1

Gather the flower stalks with the flower heads during the summer months and allow to dry. I finish the drying
process in the warming drawer of the oven and then the leaves and flowers are easy to rub off the stems. You
could also use a dehydrator or very cool oven.

Both the leaves and flowers of yarrow are edible and highly nutritious. The plant has several phytochemicals
called flavonoids, that have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-tumour and antioxidant properties. These
flavonoids also improve digestion and appetite by increasing the secretions of saliva, bile and other stomach
acids, thus helping ease heartburn and acid reflux.

Here’s an interesting account of how yarrow and other ‘weeds’ are rich in nutrients: “Modern research has
shown that many now-despised weeds of grassland have much higher nutritional value than the fodder grasses
amongst which they attempt to
grow but are sprayed out usually.
The mineral cobalt, essential for
nutrition in ruminants (cows),
reaches concentrations in
buttercups (not edible) and
plantains (edible) 160 times that in
grasses. Dandelion, stinging nettle
and thistles (all edible) have up to
five times the proportion of copper
as grasses, and the same species
have one and a half times that of
iron. Magnesium, a deficiency of
which causes ‘grass tetany’ (grass

4 Steps to Successful Home Downsizing by Vanessa Charman-Moore

Step 1. Choosing a Location
Tauranga has long been a retirement mecca with an abundance of lifestyle villages and low maintenance
home developments. The choice can be mind-boggling, with options ranging from freehold title to licence-to-
occupy and from boutique villages to large nationally operated villages.
The licence-to-occupy is now common in lifestyle retirement villages. A licence-to-occupy gives the
purchaser a right to live in the village with the village operator retaining the ownership of the buildings and land.
Most lifestyle village licence-to-occupy agreements include a deferred management fee that is taken from the
original purchase price when the residential unit (villa or apartment) is resold and relicensed. The deferred
management fee is generally between 20-30% of the original purchase price of the residential unit. In most
cases there is no capital gain received.
Large lifestyle villages have a lot to offer with regard to companionship and activities. Many have swimming
pools and bowling greens. Some have rest homes and hospitals for continuity
of care. Although it can take time to get used to the fact that you do not own
your home, when new arrivals get used to this, they enjoy the facilities around
them and the security that a well-run village has to offer.
Some of the freehold villages provide an alternative option where a seller
still gets future capital gain yet is part of a community. For a monthly fee, lawns
are mowed and often some communal facilities such as a club room are
offered.
Other things to consider are the village rules, as these will vary between
operators. If having a pet or hanging out your laundry is important to you then
check out the fine print. Check out future development plans at the village to
ensure that the petanque court will stay and so will your favourite view.
There are a lot of things to consider so it can be helpful to have a checklist.
When moving into a village a solicitor must always be consulted to ensure the
village documentation is understood.

racism. There is a well known whakatauki that goes
“Kāore tekūmarae kōrero mō tōna ake reka/the kūmara
does not speak of its own sweetness”. It speaks of the
Māori cultural way of not speaking of your own
positive qualities, which can make things bloody
tricky for a counsellor. If I ignore this then I would try
to drag Māori clients into the pakeha way of being and
those clients would have to endure more colonisation.

I will never not be racist but, if I am able to remind
myself that I am, I can address those moments where
it matters. If I want to pretend I’m not then I will
perpetuate my racism unwittingly. If you want to
explore this notion of small r racism a bit more I can
highly recommend the film, “the color of fear”.
