Back issues of the Pyes Pa Newsletter 2 http://anyflip.com/bookcase/etrx PLEASE TAKE NOTE! FRIDAY Newsletter articles and stories must be submitted on time, or miss the boat! Pyes Pa Foodie (This is well worth making and eating - my friends LOVED it) 300g Rhubarb, trimmed and cut into 3cm pieces 2 T Caster Sugar 200g Strawberries, hulled and halved 2 T Vanilla Extract CHEESECAKE TO SERVE 2 tablespoons Raspberry or Strawberry Jam Grease a 23 cm springform tin and fully line with baking paper. Preheat the oven to 180°C regular bake. Lay the Rhubarb and Strawberries in an even layer in a roasting dish and sprinkle with caster sugar and vanilla extract. Toss to coat evenly and roast for 15 - 20 minutes. Leave to cool in syrup. CHEESECAKE Whizz the biscuits and melted butter together in a food processor until it has the texture of damp sand, then pour into the prepared tin. Squash the biscuit crumbs into the base and halfway up the sides of the tin, using the base of a glass jar. Chill Reduce the oven to 160°C regular bake. Melt the white chocolate in a heat proof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Don’t let the bowl touch the water. Whisk until smooth. While the chocolate is melting, (wipe out food processor) whizz the cream cheese, sugar, eggs and yolk until smooth. Mix the custard powder, vanilla, and water to form a smooth paste, then add to the cream cheese mixture and briefly whizz again. With the motor running, add the white chocolate in 2 - 3 lots until well mixed. Pour the filling into the chilled base. Scoop out one cup of rhubarb and strawberries, draining excess liquid back into the remainder, and drop in blobs onto the surface of the cheesecake. Reserve the remaining fruit. Bake for 65 - 70 minutes, reducing the oven temperature to 150°C for the last 5 -10 minutes. The cheesecake is ready once it is set fully, but with a slight wobble in the middle. Turn the oven off and open the oven door just a little then allow cheesecake to cool in the oven to avoid cracking. Once cold, refrigerate until half an hour before serving with reserved fruit and cream. by Jo Reid White Chocolate, Rhubarb and Strawberry Cheesecake Deadline for December issue is: Nov 24 2023 250g Krispie or Arrowroot biscuits 200g sour cream 70g melted butter 3 large eggs 200g white chocolate, chopped 1 large yolk 625g cream cheese at room temperature, chopped 3 T custard powder 2 T water

Back issues of the Pyes Pa Newsletter 3 http://anyflip.com/bookcase/etrx Hello everyone In August, it was time for my 3-monthly PSA test and a review with the Urologist. He gave me the news that he had been expecting at each of the previous reviews – the PSA result had lifted above the baseline. He said that it was time for action, and he referred me to an Oncologist at the Kathleen Kilgour Centre. Now, I have embarked on course of radiotherapy to blast the pesky cells out of existence. It means a trip to KKC, in Twentieth Avenue, 5 days a week for 6 weeks. There is something futuristic about the whole process – I lay on a table while the machine whirs away (and it looks as if it has come from the set of Doctor Who). A few minutes later I walk out of KKC as if nothing has happened. We are so privileged in Tauranga to have such a facility – it was only a few years ago that the radiotherapy would have had to be carried out at Waikato Hospital. To all you male readers: Get a PSA test regularly! Simon & Sherilyn Horne Phone: 575 8358 A/H: 027 238 1760 Ag week 2023 Last week, some of us brought lambs, cows, and chickens to school for our annual Ag day. There was a record number of animals this year! The animals walked a circuit, you had to call your lamb and get them to follow you (this didn't go as planned for everyone). With the cows, you had to lead them through an obstacle course. With the chickens, they got judged on their grooming and overall health. At the end of these challenges, trophies, along with the champion ribbons, were given out to the winners. Then all of the animals got to go home at lunch for a feed and some well earnt rest! Ag day was an exciting day for both animal owners and artists. We hosted competitive activities like photography, 3D art, designing your own bird, baking, and garden activities for any student to enter. The purpose of creating these masterpieces was to embrace horticulture, agriculture, and recycling. Everybody enjoyed making brilliant works of art to present to the hall and getting them judged. Well done to the winners and everyone else who entered their work in the competition! Night Markets Last week, on Thursday from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, we had some night markets. This allowed families to get together, mingle and have a good time. Senior students were busy all week making and designing stalls for the night market. There were also games such as throw the ball in a bucket, gumboot throwing and also throw the wet sponge. Coming up Next week will be the Senior school’s Athletics Day that will have a series of events, including the high jump, long jump, discus and shot put. Students have been having fun practising over the last few weeks and can’t wait for the actual event. High jump and long jump are the favourites on the day! by Cadence, Kendall, Haylie-R, Max, Hunter, Ryan, Marlin, Braiden, Perry, Kaden

Back issues of the Pyes Pa Newsletter 9 http://anyflip.com/bookcase/etrx This month at Playcentre we have some exciting movement in our outdoor area that is around the back of our centre. We had seven very large trees cut down and removed from this area last year, creating an opportunity to rejuvenate this area. A massive shout-out and thank you to some of our amazing mums, who have planned, organised and executed the ideas for this new and improved area! It is now being transformed into a fun oasis for our kids. Complete with some citrus trees, balancing poles and a sensory garden with herbs and other goodies - perfect for adding to potions! We are having a deck built in this new garden area that will house a teepee to create a nook for the kids to play in. We are going to plant some native trees and build a raised garden bed so we can plant seasonal fruits and vegetables for the kids to help grow, harvest and enjoy. Despite the somewhat unpredictable weather that we have had in the last few weeks, we have been able to enjoy lots of time outdoors, with awesome play setups in the sandpit and epic obstacle courses designed to physically challenge our kids (and help expend some of their energy). We look forward to some warmer and sunnier days so that we can bust out some inspiring water play ideas! Our sessions run on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9.30am-12pm. We are located next to Pyes Pa School. So come along and check out the fun (and our new garden area) that our centre has to offer. The first three visits are free. Pay-as-you-go annual leave Instead of four weeks’ annual leave, you can pay your employees on a pay-as-you-go basis at a minimum rate of 8% of their gross earnings if: • the employee is on a genuine fixed-term agreement of less than 12 months, or • the employee works so irregularly that it’s impractical to provide them with four weeks’ annual holidays. If your employees work standard hours, their leave payments should be standard. If they work irregular hours, their leave payments should fluctuate. If you feel unsure about what you’re doing, it’s worth getting guidance from a payroll specialist who can help you set up a good system. (Continued from page 7) Paying Leave to Employees (cont’d)

Back issues of the Pyes Pa Newsletter 17 http://anyflip.com/bookcase/etrx Pyes Pa School (continued) Help Sharon solve her mystery (continued) The US Congress would be made up of ordinary people, selected in lotteries, not elections. It’s an idea that goes back thousands of years—but is getting new attention. Millions of homes in Texas lost power for days in February as a rare winter storm drove temperatures below zero. People struggled to warm up and light their stoves, and many lined up at public spigots and even boiled snow to procure safe drinking water. Dozens may have died. Meanwhile, Senator Ted Cruz left the state for a Ritz-Carlton stay in Cancún. It was yet another sign that elected leaders are often out of touch completely with the people they represent. For one group, the answer to this leadership failure is clear: Scrap elections and replace them with democratic lotteries. In place of elected officials would be, as the ancient Greeks envisioned, Ho Boulomenous, or “anyone who wishes.” Of By For is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organisation whose goal is to change the entire system of how we choose leaders, arguing that the centuries-old democratic ideal of “government of the people, by the people, for the people” has crumbled. Political divisiveness and rancour are at peak levels, and the group believes it’s because democracy is broken. But there’s a solution. Instead of electing rich, polished politicians who are tied to special interests, we should be getting the masses to govern. They want to replace the entire legislature with ordinary people, selected at random in the same way we choose jackpot winners. “The goal is to free America from politicians, parties, and all the B.S.,” says Adam Cronkright, Of By For’s co-coordinator, “and give us a government that actually works, and that does right by us as a people.” Of By For has already performed a lottery to give people a glimpse of the process. Thirty Michigan residents were chosen to form a citizens’ panel and make recommendations about COVID-19 policy. The group mailed out 10,000 requests to a representative sample of people based on census data and polling data on COVID-19 attitudes. Respondents were entered into a second lottery. Using an algorithm developed with Harvard and Carnegie Mellon universities, they randomly generated 1,000 unique panels of 30, of which they picked one. That lottery was a success. Their chosen panelists were representative demographically, gender-balanced, aged 20 to 87, and had wide variations in race, education, and political views. The panel emerged with 12 policy recommendations on handling COVID-19 and the economy, including on mask mandates, unemployment benefits, and home relief grants. For instance, they decided, with 89% in favour and 11% against, to provide equitable access to healthcare related to COVID -19, including the state subsidising insurance costs that aren’t covered. The same number supported an increase in mental health resources, adding a clause that social workers should accompany police who respond to mental health calls. Other recommendations were to raise the income threshold to allow more people to qualify for housing aid (93% in favour), offer clear and consistent mask education (74% in favour), and increase funding to childcare centres and provide childcare workers with a living wage (89% in favour). While things could get heated politically at times, Cronkright says the participants stayed respectful and listened to each other. “This was in Michigan, on COVID, so, this is the most charged issue in the most divided state,” he says, referring to the conflicts over COVID-19 restrictions that led to armed protests at the statehouse. He believes it’s a recipe for quashing divisiveness and even keeping extremist views from stirring up. “That’s what you tend to see when you cut out the pundits and the politicians,” he says, “and it’s just people engaging directly with other people.” It’s no new concept, rather one invented millennia ago, rooted in Athenian democracy. In ancient Greece, “sortition” was used to choose councils, magistrates (high-level government officers), and juries, to guard against corruption and oligarchy. They used the earliest form of lottery machines, called kleroteria. These huge slabs of stone would contain small slots; anyone who wished to serve would place a bronze or wooden token into a slot. Different coloured balls were then released through a funnel and tube, designating some of the rows of slots for government appointment. Those selected would represent the people and make crucially important decisions (such as condemning Socrates to death). In Athens, of course, democracy would eventually collapse. Many critics of the time, who had favoured a system ruled by aristocrats, viewed Athens’s democracy as too radical in its involvement of the lower classes; the military leader Pericles was blamed for devolving democracy further still, into the realm of populism. But today, around the world, citizens’ panels and assemblies are becoming more common. Cronkright is a member of Democracy R&D, a coalition of 40 organisations around the world advancing democratic lotteries in countries including Belgium, Canada, and Colombia. Under Macron’s orders, France gathered a citizens’ assembly of 150 people to develop climate goals. But Cronkright says panel recommendations can often simply be dismissed by governments. In the French case, a Macron aide reportedly said some of the assembly outcomes had been deemed unacceptable. But Of By For’s vision in the U.S. is much bigger. It wants citizens to replace elected lawmakers across local, state, and federal governments. Congress would be made up entirely of sortition-selected citizens. In that ultimate vision, governing would be a service, not a profession. Chosen folks would be paid a salary and given staff and training in governance, and then, after their term (kept short, in the Athenian model, to prevent the accumulation of power), they would return to their usual jobs, (Continued on page 21) What if we replaced elected politicians with randomly selected citizens?

Back issues of the Pyes Pa Newsletter 19 http://anyflip.com/bookcase/etrx Now that the election is behind us, we know that we will be having a change of Government. We are now waiting for the special votes to be counted and this will tell us what influence that the Act Party’s, and New Zealand First’s, policies will have on the ultimate policy direction of the new National Government led by Christopher Luxton. For Local Government, who have spent the last six years adapting to the Labour and Green Parties’ direction and the raft of new legislation that has been passed, we now have to keep delivering to what is in force at the moment while knowing that a lot of what was implemented during the last term will now be repealed or modified. We hear that the new Natural and Built Environment Act will be repealed, and we will revert to the Resource Management Act and that is likely to have further changes. The focus on public transport investment may be lessened and a greater focus on improving our roading infrastructure is likely. National also intends to repeal the last Government’s Three Waters legislation and the Water Services Entities Act, although councils will be required to deliver a plan for how they will transition their water services to a new model that meets water quality and infrastructure investment rules, while being sustainable financially in the long-term. All of this will require refocus of resources for Councils and a change of direction. We are also likely to see a reverse of the move toward centralisation of power and decision-making at a national level that will be welcomed greatly by Local Government as many of the Labour policy changes made were rushed and difficult to implement. Likely to be welcomed is a reshape of the relationship between central government and local government through long-term partnership agreements called City and Regional Deals that include shared strategic objectives, developed in partnership and reflecting the particular local characteristics of each city and region. These are proposed to include long-term funding commitments by both central and local government to enable certainty of planning. This will be welcomed greatly, since a major (Continued on page 20) Hi from Jane Nees, Your Bay of Plenty Regional Councillor Interesting Times Ahead Sales and service agents for: Cub Cadet, MTD, Lawnmaster, Countax, Rover, Masport and more We Service and repair all makes and models New and used parts available in our shop Qualified Technician with over 30 years experience SMALL ENGINE SERVICE LTD 856a Oropi Rd Tauranga 021 886 359 [email protected]

Back issues of the Pyes Pa Newsletter 20 http://anyflip.com/bookcase/etrx finding of the recent Future of Local Government Review was that the current funding model for Local Government is broken, and that Central Government needs to help with alternative funding sources for infrastructure. All this is ahead of us, but for now, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council needs to be developing our Long Term Plan for the next ten years. We have to do it now to meet the requirements of Audit New Zealand and to consult with the community early next year. This is not an easy task in the current situation with high inflation and high uncertainty. The key will be to focus on what our environment and community needs and be ready to be flexible and adapt to the changes ahead. Back issues of the Pyes Pa Newsletter 21 http://anyflip.com/bookcase/etrx I think that I have written about self-awareness....the state of being able to see yourself at any moment. When we can’t do this, we can allow a simple moment to become a big problem. Here is an example: She is leaving the house and, thinking that her partner is going to follow her, leaves the door open. "Were you born in a tent? Close the @#$% door.” He yells. She replies, "I thought you were coming out." He retorts, "That's beside the point. You're letting the heat out." She replies with, "just like you did yesterday", and so the fight escalates resulting in some quality insults, some delightfully petulant sulking and a four-day cooling off before they can reconnect...all over a door being left open, or a mug left on a table or an asked-for grocery item being forgotten...small crimes by anyone’s standards, but they lead to disproportionate fights often. At any time, that conversation could have gone differently if either of them could have noticed and expressed what was going on for themself. When he said, "Were you born in a tent?..." what is probable that he meant was, "When you leave the door open I feel disrespected, unloved and uncared for. It feels like you don't respect my efforts to earn money to keep us housed and fed, or care about my comfort." Her response of trying to explain and justify her actions came out of the sense that, "I'm being attacked so I need to defend myself". His response to that came from, "I feel unheard when you didn't respond to my call for love...now I feel doubly unloved and I'm going to hurt you, to pay you back for hurting me." As I've said before, our problems are our problems. When you can't notice, "I'm feeling attacked” or “I feel disrespected", you allow those feelings to control you and you make the other person the reason you are feeling that way...they become the problem. Unless they are actively, maliciously doing it to cause you pain, they are probably acting out of thoughtlessness, forgetfulness, or simply not knowing what you need...because you haven't expressed those needs. In the example above, the fight could have been averted by him saying, "Hey, I feel disrespected when the door is left open". It could have been averted by her noticing that feeling of being attacked and realising it was just a feeling in response to his anger and replying, "I'm sorry, I didn't realise it was bothering you." and closing it. Self awareness is about noticing yourself, your feelings and the sensations in your body and being curious about those, rather than responding to them. It's very liberating. It allows you to dance with problems rather than fight with them...it allows you to meet anger with calm or fun - meet "Were you born in a tent?", with "Are you saying you want to go camping?". To take an insult as a compliment...meet "You're a loser!," with "Woohoo! I'm an expert at something!" The words we throw back and forth between us are just words. We can choose what meaning to ascribe to them and how we want to react, but only if we can see how we are affected. Steve Gore MCouns. On the executive side, presidents and governors would be chosen as a company would look for a CEO — by a hiring committee, which would also be made up of lottery winners. (Another lottery-selected committee would then evaluate the president’s job performance, to keep him or her accountable.) From a practical angle, how exactly they’d achieve this goal is not entirely clear — even to them. Political reforms happen rarely, because “The foxes are in charge of the henhouse,” Cronkright admits. The most robust route would be via state constitutional amendments; starting on the national level would simply be too overwhelming. Alexander Guerrero, a professor of philosophy at Rutgers University, whose book on “lottocracy” will be out next year, says, in some states, securing that amendment would be incredibly hard and require a constitutional convention. “This isn’t impossible, but it would be a nearunprecedented thing,” he says. So, the organisation’s focus right now is the “battle for the imagination”: to create awareness and educate, including via an upcoming documentary to be released about the Michigan panel. They’re encouraged by polling they’ve carried out with SurveyUSA: 65% of respondents said a lottery would be better or much better than the current system, and just 21% expressed opposition to a constitutional amendment. In the wrap-up of the Michigan panel, participants got emotional about their experiences. One man cried as he described the positive impressions his fellow citizens had had on him. Cronkright says it’s such a new experience for people to lend their voice and have a seat at the table that politicians have always dominated. Why not cut out that middleman? “We believe this myth that elections mean democracy,” he says. “But, to me, democracy means that the power to govern is in the hands of the people. That we govern ourselves.” Source: fastcompany.com/90606492/what-if-we-replaced-elected-politicians-with-randomly-selected-citizens (Continued from page 17) What if we replaced elected politicians with randomly selected citizens?

Back issues of the Pyes Pa Newsletter 23 http://anyflip.com/bookcase/etrx G uy Fawkes can certainly be an enjoyable event. However, this time of year can also be a very stressful time for our pets, there’s no doubt about that. Fireworks can cause a lot of anxiety in our animals, as well as be the cause of horrific injuries to not just pets, but all wildlife and stock. Pets can become so distressed that, in some cases, they may not come home, running away, going missing, injuring themselves, or becoming susceptible to traffic accidents. At our clinics, we receive a lot of enquiries at this time of year from owners worried about how to help their pets cope with Guy Fawkes. Animals are more sensitive to loud noises than we are. And, as you can’t explain to your pet what is going on, it makes the situation even more stressful for both you and your frightened friend. Planning ahead is key! Here are some helpful tips to get you both through: • Where possible, keep your pets inside while the celebration is happening. • Reduce the fireworks noise that your pet can hear, and the bright flashes that they can see, by closing windows and doors and drawing curtains. Turn the TV or radio up louder to counteract the noise. • If your pet reacts to the lights or sounds, stay calm. Don’t react by reassuring your pet, this only encourages the animal to continue this behaviour each time it hears or sees fireworks. If you don’t react, your pet is unlikely to react too. • Distract your dog with an inside game, a great game is hide and seek with treats – this is a good way to turn an unpleasant situation into a positive one. • If your pet does become frightened, give them a place to hide until it is all over. Under the bed in the bedroom is always a safe haven. Leave them there until they come out on their own. Remember the 5th of November - keep your pets inside and safe on Guy Fawkes night! At Tauranga Veterinary Services we can see you and your beloved pet 7 days a week at our Tauranga Clinic and 6 days at the other four clinics. Back issues of the Pyes Pa Newsletter 25 http://anyflip.com/bookcase/etrx Do you grow your own food and vegetables and want to learn more or see what others are doing locally? We are a casual friendly group that meets every 3rd Sunday in the month to share ideas on growing food. This month we visited Pippa (not her real name), who joined just over 3 years ago and had never gardened prior to immigrating to New Zealand 6 years ago. It was Pippa’s first garden, and we revisited her journey as we walked around the garden for the last time, as the property was about to go on the market. It was moving to realise how much heart and soul had gone into the garden, but also the connections and memories made. One member of the group had come and helped set up the espaliers for the fruit trees, another had donated elephant garlic, the chili plant was grown from seed by another member and when the persimmon tree split, another member had come over and provided a solution to mend, reprune and shape it. Decisions about what to plant where had been guided by advice from others with more experience and keen to help. Despite being about to be sold, the garden had been planted out with tomatoes, new seedlings, and herbs for the prospective new owners. Young seedlings were protected by plastic bottles and when the other half suggested they might not look attractive to potential buyers – he was told quickly if a person couldn’t see their purpose or appreciate the garden, then she didn’t want them to buy the property. What a bonus to inherit a beautiful garden that has been developed with love and hard work, resulting in an abundance of home grown food. If you'd like to share your successes - and failures - and learn from others, come and join us! Tsunami maps for Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty have been updated recently, and now show one blue evacuation zone. The blue zone represents an area that will not be safe in the event of a tsunami. Blue Means Go: in a tsunami warning, Get Out of the Blue. This change comes as we wanted to make our tsunami evacuation maps as easy to understand as possible and this also matches map modelling introduced recently in Waikato and Wellington. The evacuation maps are based on a modelled 14m high tsunami wave following a large earthquake in the Southern Kermadec Trench, that would be the biggest tsunami risk to Bay of Plenty. Some evacuation boundaries and tsunami safe locations are the same as before, and the most significant change is shifting to blue, instead of red, orange, and yellow evacuation zones. Maps and tips for what to do should a long or strong earthquake or tsunami occur can be found through the QR code or at www.tauranga.govt.nz/tsunami. Printed maps are also available at Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council service centres. Tauranga Emergency Management staff will be at Tauranga Crossing on Saturday, 11 November from 9am – 5pm to answer any questions you may have and provide tips for planning and evacuation.
