Pyes Pa Foodie
By Jo Reid
ORZO PASTA SALAD WITH GRILLED HALLOUMI ASPARAGUS AND PINE NUTS

Box Cherry Tomatoes or Garden picked when ready Lemon Juice
Bag Baby Spinach (or picked from your garden) Capsicum Yellow or Red - Use both
Basil for on top of your Salad and more for your pesto recipe Bunch of Asparagus
1/2 Cup Pine nuts (Toasted) Halloumi Cheese

500grms of Orzo cooked in boiling water for about 11 mins
Drain and Rinse the orzo - rinse the orzo only if it will be served cool in a salad. Otherwise do not rinse
because rinsing removes a light coating of starch that helps sauces cling to the pasta.

PESTO RECIPE (You can use store-bought or it is much nicer to make your own)

2 Cups Basil Leaves (Packed Tightly) 2 large Cloves Garlic

2/3 Cup Olive Oil 1/3 Cup grated parmesan cheese

Salt and Pepper 1/4 Cup Toasted Pine Nuts

Add everything to a blender and you now have PESTO

Method for Salad Recipe
Chop Tomatoes in 1/2 along with slices of Yellow and Red Capsicum. I like to leave Asparagus whole for a fun
presentation. Pan fry Asparagus until soft. I like to use a skillet pan for grill marks.
Mix the pesto and lemon juice with salt and pepper, add some spinach to wilt slightly but
save some to add to the bowl. Add Orzo, capsicums, cut up. In a large bowl put spinach on
the bottom, Pesto/Orzo mix and then more spinach on top. Spoon through chopped
tomatoes, and lay the rest of the capsicum on top, more spinach, grilled asparagus (cooled)
and your grilled Halloumi Cheese (cool slightly), last of all add your roasted pine nuts and
some fresh Basil and ENJOY.

Hello everyone
This month, we are saying goodbye to Trisha who has been providing the Foodie column for the last five years -

We are also saying farewell to Lauren Murphy who has been writing the Report for the Pyes Pa Playcentre for
just over 2 years. Nichelle Healy will be sending us the Reports from next month.

Lorra and I spent a week in the South Island with our son who is living in Dunedin. We travelled over to Lake
Tekapo for the long weekend and we were lucky to have some sunny weather. We spent a day at the Tasman
Glacier and at the Hermitage at Mt Cook in glorious sunshine. Even though it was the long weekend, there were
very few people at these popular tourist spots. The large café at the Hermitage was almost empty - in contrast to
how it would have been twelve months ago when all of the tourist buses and campervans would have been
there. It is the perfect opportunity to see New Zealand while the borders are shut.

A few years ago, I was thinking that New Zealand would have its time (as in “every dog has its day”) but I
could not think what would give it that special position. However Covid may have answered that because, within
the last six months, our country has become a very desirable place to take up residence.

Mana Whenua middle and senior school
production

The Y4-8 Teachers embarked on a journey this year to mobilise the Pyes Pā
localised curriculum into a school production for their students. Named Mana
Whenua, this original production was crafted to be a deliberate learning
experience for everyone. The production depicted the pūrākau (story) of
Taurikura and the hītori (history) of Te Weranga [known as the scorched earth
policy] where the students became the teachers, educating staff, students, and
the community.

We were fortunate to write our own script and would like to acknowledge our
local hapū who have also contributed and provided their blessing for our
production. Specifically for Te Pūrakau of Taurikura: this story has been shared
by a few of the tūpuna (ancestors) of Tauranga Moana, and have been shared for
the present generation, for the young, and the not so young, who have not had
the opportunity to hear them as they grew up in the district. For Te Hītori o Te
Weranga: we would like to acknowledge those from Akeake Marae who were
valuable sources of knowledge and supported us in our journey to create these
valuable learning experiences, creating a Turangawaewae (a place to stand) for
our students and community; specifically, sincere thanks to Matua Kuni Williams,
Whaea Awhina Nuku and Matua Grant Rānui from Akeake Marae.

The school is very proud of the students' accomplishments and we would like to
thank all of the staff of Pyes Pā School and those from our community who were
involved as it was truly a team effort! If you were unable to see the production,
further information and a video of highlights can be found on our school website
(https://youtu.be/1syNjkK-hH8).

by Nikki Blake

Tourism BOP has used donations from cruise ship passengers to Tauranga during
the 2020 / 21 season to fund the hatching and raising of a kiwi chick and is asking people to suggest a name for
the new bird.

The donations funded the cost of incubating and hatching the egg from an Ōtanewainuku bird at the National
Hatchery in Rotorua. Once the new chick has reached about one kilogram in weight, it will be taken to a predator
-proof creche near Cambridge. From there, it will be taken back to Ōtanewainuku forest when it’s six months old
and is more able to defend itself against predators like stoats and rats.

We’re very grateful to Tourism BOP for this generous contribution to help increase the numbers of kiwi that
continue to decline, from
the millions that were
once present, to about
70,000 in NZ today.

Keeping your pets safe in spring

The warmer weather is great for pets and their owners alike, but it’s also a timely reminder to check your
house and garden for anything that may be harmful to your pet.

Thanks to their curious nature, both dogs and cats can sniff, lick and chew their way into trouble. Spring
can also be a time when we see pets suffering allergies and itchy skin due to pollen or grass.

 Compost: Keep your compost free of human foods that are toxic to pets.

 Fertiliser: Use fertiliser that is free of toxins, and make sure pets are indoors when you’re spraying.

 Slug, snail and rat bait: It is important to remember that any poisonous bait kept on your property is a
risk to your pet, and ingestion of the bait, whether directly or through ingestion of a poisoned animal, is
often fatal. If you do keep poisonous bait on your property, keep it out of reach and in a pet-proof
container.

 Garden tools: Many gardening tools, like rakes, are sharp and can easily cause puncture wounds that
can then cause tetanus. Make sure that garden tools are locked away, or at least not hiding in tall grass.

 Poisonous plants: Plant poisoning is fairly common for pets; and plants found in many Kiwi gardens
such as aloe vera, daffodils and even tomato plants can be toxic for your animals.

Despite your most careful attention, pets can still get up to a bit of mischief and sometimes need
unexpected visits to the vet. We recommend that all pet owners take out pet insurance to help ensure you can
afford the care your animals rely on you for.

ALWAYS REMEMBER – IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS ABOUT YOUR PETS’ HEALTH OR
BEHAVIOUR, CONTACT YOUR VET FOR ADVICE.

Getting outside

by Lauren Shaw

Over the past month, we have enjoyed many sunny days. While outside, we
have explored a number of areas of play including paint. We decided to set up a variety of options for the children
to paint on including rocks, leaves, sticks, paper and dried flowers. Then some of our children extended this by
painting their hands, arms and legs. It is wonderful when the weather is warm as we can wash off the paint easily
afterwards.

These gorgeous mornings have also seen the children drawn to the sand pit where they have taken part in
creative play by riding around on diggers and incorporating animals, pots, shells and pans into their imaginary
play. They enjoyed working together, problem solving and sharing a play space. Sand play has an endless list of
benefits for children of all ages including developing early maths skills,
gross and fine motor skills, and experimenting with different textures.

We have had lots of fun climbing trees, playing on the obstacle courses
set up with our soft play equipment and the children have loved setting up
some of our Wendy house furniture outside to play cafes, where lots of
children have taken our orders and served us food. We are looking
forward to more fabulous sunny days this term to continue enjoying our
outdoor play.

Our sessions run on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:30 - 12pm. We are
located next to Pyes Pa School. Come along and join the fun, we offer the
first three visits for free!

We would like to extend a huge Thank you to the lovely people at the
Pyes Pa Newsletter for their very kind donation of $1,000 towards our fort
upgrade project. We greatly appreciate this especially being a small not-
for-profit centre. This project has been ongoing now for two years and we
are in the final stages of planning and have just received Ministry of
Education approval to go ahead with the construction of the fort, our
children will be so happy once it is complete!

Lunches with love at ACG Tauranga Preschool

Nothing beats a meal prepared with love. It fuels the body and nourishes the soul –
and for the children at ACG Tauranga Preschool, it provides a vital link to home
during busy fun-filled days of learning.

“Our centre children bring their own packed lunch each day and they love it,” says ACG Preschool Manager
Raechel Thompson. “Any dietary and allergy requirements are met, and our children gain the skills of managing
their own lunchboxes, which helps supports their transition to school later on.

For mother of two Hannah Gibbs, the packed lunch policy is a big drawcard. It gives her peace of mind that
sons Xavier (4) and Oakley (2) are getting
the nutrition they need to thrive.

“One of our boys needs to be careful
about some foods, so, by packing his
lunch, I know that he’s eating the best that
he can for his specific needs,” Hannah
says.

“I like that we can choose what to give
our children for lunch. I pack what they
enjoy, so I know they are eating well when
they are not at home.”

Xavier and Oakley are big fans too.
“The boys enjoy having a say in what
goes into their lunchbox, and they know
what to expect at lunchtime, which is much
better than having a meal they are unsure
of and then won’t eat.”

Sea kale by Julia Sich, BA, Dip. Hort. (Distinction)

What is sea kale? For starters, sea kale (Crambe maritima) isn’t anything like kelp or seaweed and it will grow far
from the sea. Sea kale is a halophytic plant (meaning it tolerates high levels of salt) in the brassica family. It is a
perennial also known as sea-colewort and scurvy grass. The reasons for its name is that sea kale originates from
the coasts of Europe where it grows wild on shingle or rocky beaches or rocky cliffs all the way from the Black
Sea to the Baltic and because it was pickled centuries ago for long sea voyages. It prevented scurvy with it being
a rich source of vitamin C. It also contains Sulphur, calcium, vitamin B6, magnesium, and manganese and iodine
if it grows on the coast or you feed it liquid seaweed.

I have a healthy plant I love because, being perennial, it dies down in winter and regrows each spring from a
deep taproot that gets thicker as well as making more roots as it ages. The crinkly new shoots, tinged purple that
appear in spring are tender and eaten much like asparagus raw in salads, smoothies or steamed. The older
leaves need more cooking as they are tougher and stronger tasting. But they can be stir-fried, put in casseroles
or made into a nutritious soup. Even the roots are edible, but leave them if you want leaves year after year.

Growing to 75cm high and 60cm wide, the plant forms a mound or small shrub with large fleshy greyish-blue
collard-like leaves and abundant small white flowers that attract insects and smell like honey. The flowers are
great to add to salads as they’re tender, pretty and tasty. The globular pods contain a single seed. To improve
germination crack open the light, cork seed covering (designed to float in the sea and carry the seed to a new
beach) and then sow it like any other brassica.

Seakale is a survivor tolerating drought (and we’re experiencing more of these), different climates and different
types of soil. Its best feature is that, unlike a broccoli or cauliflower, it is long lived, one source saying plants could
average 8 to 10 years, but it could be longer.

There are records from the 18th century of local people along some coasts of England digging out and
harvesting the emerging shoots as a vegetable from naturally occurring root crowns in the early springtime (these
crowns can be divided to
create new plants). This
custom was first reported
by Phillip Miller in his
1731 Gardener's
Dictionary as practised
among the peoples of
Sussex and it was seen
in the 18th century being
sold as food at the
Chichester market in
1753. By the mid-19th
century in Victorian times
it had become popular as
a vegetable in Britain.
This plant has been
around a long time and
it’s definitely one to have!

Hi from Jane Nees,
Your Bay of Plenty Regional Councilor

Woolly Nightshade Wipe Out Month

Recently, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council signed
off its new Regional Pest Management Plan
(RPMP). This plan outlines the plant and animal
pests that we are concerned about in the Bay of
Plenty, and includes rules on how they should be
managed and by whom.

In the plan, we have exclusion pests (those we
want to keep out); eradication pests (those that are
here that we think we can get rid of); progressive
control pests (those we want to reduce the range
they cover); and sustained control pests (those that
need ongoing action to help limit their spread).

An example of a sustained control pest in the
western Bay of Plenty is Woolly Nightshade. It is
common on roadsides and gullies, grows quickly,
spreads easily, and crowds out native plant
seedlings. Horticulturalists are also concerned that it
may provide a host for fruit fly that would threaten our kiwifruit industry.
The Regional Council Biosecurity team are developing a campaign that will run throughout November to
encourage the public and landowners to do their bit to stop the spread of Woolly Nightshade. As part of this
campaign ‘cut & paste’
control packs are being
offered to landowners who
have stands of mature plants.
The promotion will feature
across social media, targeting
our network of care groups,
partner agencies and
community groups directly.
Members of the public are
being rewarded with spot
prizes throughout the month
when they send in ‘wipe out’
stories that will be shared
online to keep awareness of
the promotion high.
If you want to find out
more, go to the Regional
Council website or contact
me on
[email protected].

The tooth about dentals by Dr Jo Bruin

Why do we recommend that your animal’s mouth and teeth are checked regularly—preferably every 6 months,
but in all practicality yearly?

Periodontal disease is an infection or inflammation of the gum surrounding the teeth. This occurs when the
accumulation of tartar and plaque cause periodontal pockets and/or gum recession around the tooth’s
attachment. If left untreated, the infection can spread deeper into the tooth socket, destroying the bone and
wreaking havoc on the mouth. Early diagnosis can often lead to early treatment and better long-term health for
your pet.

Infected gums lead to bacteria being released into the blood stream. These bugs then establish in various
organs and areas throughout the body; these include the kidneys, liver, heart, lungs and joints. Cats, in particular,
are prone to infection in the kidneys.

Early detection enables us to treat these problems before they affect your pet’s health significantly. Pain is also
a significant feature of dental disease and our pets often suffer silently.

Signs to watch for:
- Bad breath
- Excess drooling
- Difficulty chewing
- Inflamed gums
- Tooth loss
What can you as an owner do to keep your pet’s teeth healthy?
- Regular brushes with finger brushes and paste designed for cats and dogs.
- Dental biscuits.
- Dental chew treats and toys.
- Regular check-ups at the vet, who may recommend routine scale and polish.
Often dental disease is not picked up until pets are seen in consult so, if in
doubt, it is best to get them checked! We only have to think of how painful an
infected tooth can be to realise how painful this must be for our pets.
If you have any questions or concerns about the health of your pet’s teeth,
then please do not hesitate to contact us on 0800 838 7267.

OROPI AND PYES PA by Noni Parr
FOOD GROWERS GROUP

We are a casual friendly group, meeting the third Sunday of each month to share

ideas about growing food. Our get-together includes observation, discussion

about home-grown food and gardening (techniques, hints, what works and why we

did such and such) and an afternoon tea.

Thanks to Maureen and Jean for hosting at their Joyce Road property this

month. The sheltered gardens benefit from plenty of compost, feeding and

watering. Mini hot-houses have been made and placed over plants in the garden –

large clear plastic containers (originally water containers from the

supermarket). There are several established and new fruit trees. The newer fruit

trees are grown on espalier wires. Pheromone traps are used to protect the trees

from codling moth. Copper spray has been applied to combat other pests and

diseases. Some of the gardens are protected by netting and the use of snail/slug

bait.

Next Meetings:

15 November Paola Ohauiti

December Xmas lunch (Ian & Noni)
