Hello everyone
The flies must have struck gold in early April because four of our sheep, along with several sheep belonging to
neighbours, had bad cases of fly blow. We decided to shear the rest of the flock earlier than usual in order to
safeguard against anymore strikes of horrible maggots.

I had seen a post on a local Facebook group for “Bay Shearing” and I contacted Jesse. He was able to come
the next day to shear our sheep (even though he is based in Whakatane, and only charges $35 for travel).

His whole operation impressed me a great deal. All of his equipment was self-contained on a small trailer. He
had a generator to run the electric motor that drives the clippers and a set of gates to round up sheep on small
places that do not have pens. He has designed his own logo for his Facebook page and he made a stencil for
the logo so that he could label his portable shearing platform (a sheet of plywood). He takes photos of each job
and posts them on his Facebook page.

Jesse should be commended for the thought that he has put into his set up, for the way that he markets
himself, and for his prompt, polite service.

It is good to see some enterprise in the younger generation!

Dr Ashley Bloomfield to present at Waipuna Hospice Palliative Care Symposium

Waipuna Hospice is pleased to announce that Dr Ashley Bloomfield, Director-
General of Health, will be presenting at their upcoming ‘Palliative Care in our
Compassionate Community’ Symposium on the 17th of May, 2021.

The symposium aims to create a more compassionate community to support people at the end of their lives by
bringing together industry leaders, sharing their knowledge and experience on palliative care in today’s
landscape.

Dr Ashely Bloomfield, a 1990 medical graduate with years of clinical work specialising in public health
medicine, has been a familiar face in New Zealand media since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic; delivering
daily updates and announcements, and helping lead New Zealand through unprecedented times. On the 17th of
May, Dr Bloomfield will be presenting at the Waipuna Hospice Symposium virtually, discussing how New Zealand
crushed the curve with kindness in 2020, and exploring the lessons he hopes we take into 2021 and beyond.

As Waipuna Hospice CEO, Richard Thurlow explains, Waipuna Hospice is thrilled to welcome Dr Ashley
Bloomfield to what is shaping up to be an engaging and thought provoking Symposium already.

“I had the pleasure of hearing Dr Ashley Bloomfield present last year and he is definitely an inspiring speaker
who has demonstrated sublime leadership for the whole of the country over the last year.

I am really excited to hear Ashley present on “how kindness killed the curve” – especially as kindness is one of
the central pillars of compassionate communities.”

Dr Ashley Bloomfield is the sixth keynote speaker to be announced by Waipuna Hospice. He is joined by Bay
of Plenty DHB CEO, Pete Chandler; Clinical Advisor to Hospice New Zealand, Professor Rod Macleod; Research
Fellow and founding member of the Te Ārai Palliative Care and End of Life Research Group, School of Nursing at
University of Auckland, Dr. Tess Moeke Maxwell; Starship Children’s Hospital Paediatric Palliative Care
Specialist, Dr. Emily Chang; and General Paediatrician and the Medical Lead for Paediatrics in the Bay of Plenty,
Dr. Justin Wilde.

When planning their Symposium, Waipuna Hospice made it a priority to create a programme that left attendees
with a better understanding of how palliative care fits into the community, and the role they play. To achieve this,
discussions on the day are set to range from caring for Māori kaumātua at end of life, and learning from the past
to shape the future, to paediatric palliative care and how end-of-life care fits into a compassionate community.

Health professionals, carers, and interested people from the community are invited to purchase tickets.
However, tickets are already selling fast and the event is expected to sell out.

The “Palliative Care in our Compassionate Community” Symposium will be held on 17th May, at
Waipuna Hospice, 43 Te Puna Station Road, from 8am – 3pm. Tickets are available at

MONEY MATTER$ New tax rate of 39% for
earnings over $180,000
by Nikki Blake

From April 2021 a new marginal tax rate of 39% applies to income earned by individuals over $180,000 pa.
There have been corresponding changes to other tax types (e.g. fringe benefit tax and resident withholding tax)
to align with this new rate.

The new tax rate might motivate some high-income individuals to explore ways to reduce their exposure to
the new rate. However, any activity undertaken with the primary intent of reducing a person's exposure to the
higher 39% marginal rate may be viewed as tax avoidance.

The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has published several statements addressing tax avoidance that are
relevant to the introduction of the new 39% rate. Transactions, restructuring and arrangements that are similar
to scenarios or arrangements in these published statements will most likely be looked into the by the IRD. The
IRD will be using their information-gathering and data analysis capabilities to identify changes in behaviour and
will contact those customers and ask them to explain the changes.

The following are listed as examples of concerning behaviour:
1. Restructuring of a personal service provider business into a company/trust coupled with a reduction in
individual income;
2. Withdrawing funds from a company/trust as a loan rather than salary/dividend or other taxable distribution,
especially where this results in an overdrawn current account;
3. Diverting income-distributions to low-income shareholders/beneficiaries if the benefit of the funds is still
enjoyed by a high-income person;
4. Paying a spouse or family member a salary where no service is provided in return;
5. Adopting different tax treatment to bring forward income or defer expenditure;
6. Altering the timing (bringing forward or otherwise) of any income-based payment where it is linked to
existing contractual terms or practice for the date for payment (bonuses, redundancy payments, vesting of share
options, etc)
If you are affected by the change to the top marginal tax rate, talk to your accountant or tax advisor before
making any changes to business structures or income distributions. There are serious penalties for tax
avoidance (up to a shortfall penalty of 100%) so make sure any changes comply with legislation.

The benefits of microchipping

Every day, animals go missing and turn up at SPCA. Collars and tags alone are not effective at identifying
your pet as these can be lost or removed easily. A microchip gives your companion the best chance of being
reunited with you if they become lost.
What is a microchip?

A microchip is a tiny chip with a unique ID number. About the size of a grain of rice, the chip is inserted
under your pet’s skin by a vet and takes only seconds to insert.
How will it help get my pet back?

If someone finds your pet and takes them to a vet clinic, SPCA or the council, they will scan for a microchip
automatically. When a microchip is found, they will look up the unique ID number on the national pet
database and contact you on the phone number that you’ve supplied. It's ESSENTIAL to register your
microchip.
How do I register the microchip?

You need to register your pet's microchip number alongside your name, address and contact details on the
New Zealand Companion Animal Register, a national pet database. If you adopt an animal from the
SPCA, our centres will either register the microchip for you or advise you how to do it yourself.

Please make sure to update your details if you move, simply by visiting www.animalregister.co.nz and
updating your information online.
Does my pet still need an identification tag?

Sometimes microchips can fail or you may forget to update your details, so you should also use a collar
and ID tag with your phone number. This makes it easy for people to contact you if they find your pet. For
cats, it's important to use a breakaway collar so they can escape safely if they get tangled.

For more information on microchipping, visit www.spca.nz

Volatile Volcanoes

by Nichelle Healy

This past month we noticed our tamariki talking a lot about
volcanoes so we decided to spend one session building
sand volcanoes in the sandpit. We used the combination
of baking soda and vinegar to create the volcano’s
explosion and had our tamariki help pour the vinegar into
the baking soda to create the eruption. To ensure the
volcano erupted, the children had to be very precise with
their pouring to ensure that the vinegar was poured
directly into the baking soda for the eruption to work. Most
children were able to do this and listened carefully to the
instructions on how to hold and pour the vinegar properly.
The children loved watching the chemical reaction and the
‘lava’ flowing out of the top of the volcano. There were lots
of conversation about the lava and how it moved. We also
talked about some of the volcanoes we have in New
Zealand including Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe
and the different shapes that they are and how, when a
volcano has a huge eruption, sometimes this can change
its shape. We had such an enjoyable morning learning
some early science and learning more about the place we
call home. We are looking forward to the new term and
many more opportunities to support our future scientists.

Our sessions run Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:30 -
12pm. We are located next to Pyes Pa School, come
along and join the fun, we offer the first three visits for
free!

ACG Tauranga’s Interact Club builds community spirit

Encouraging students to contribute significantly to their school and to the wider
community, the Interact Club continues to strengthen ACG Tauranga’s cornerstone
values of compassion, empathy and service.

This new club has seen phenomenal growth since its introduction last year. In just 12 months, the student-run
programme has almost tripled its original membership.

"I like being involved in Interact because it’s important to find ways to support those less fortunate than us,"
explains club president and Year 11 student Katelyn Bedford. "There are also the personal benefits – helping
others makes you feel pretty great."

The club has made a powerful impact already. In 2020 it supported both Youthline and the Tauranga
Community Foodbank, with fundraising drives that exceeded expectations by far.

Humanities teacher and club facilitator, Nicky Gawler, believes that the club’s efforts have had a strong ripple
effect across the school.

“They have raised student awareness of
the Interact Club and of what’s going on in
the community. There are constant news
stories of people struggling, and I think
that’s why the club has seen such growth.”

It’s not only charities that are benefitting.
Students build empathy, develop
organisational skills, and even boost their
marketing and finance expertise.

The Interact Club is planning a trial
programme with Age Concern Tauranga
currently, where members will help older
people improve their IT skills so that they
can connect with family via FaceTime and
Zoom."

Clammy goosefoot by Julia Sich, BA, Dip. Hort. (Distinction)

I’ve had a lovely little patch of this on a walkway over summer and I enjoyed seeing and even walking over part of
it every day! It stays low to the ground but the stems rise up when it is not disturbed.

Its botanical name is Chenopodium pumilio. Chenopodium Greek = goosefoot. (It is in the same family as
fathen or Lambs quarters Chenopodium album and my favourite Magenta spreen or Tree spinach Chenopodium
gigantium) and pumilio Latin = dwarf.

It likes to spread out over bare ground, or over open waste places, sandy coastal areas or open paddocks and
it loves hot weather. Its stems and leaves are scented pleasantly when you squeeze them and the stems are
flexible to about 20cm long; either growing upwards or flat on the ground with just the tips erect. You can’t see
the flowers or seeds they’re so inconspicuous. I noticed that the older plant parts were stronger smelling and a bit
sticky in hot, dry weather.

The leaves are small and oak leaf shaped and that is different from the other Chenopodiums with their
distinctly large goosefoot shaped leaves. But I love to see the diversity in plant families and, while I didn’t actually
try eating this one, I just loved having it in the garden as
another species to add to the diversity of plants I have. It
adds a different quality just by its presence. All three of
the Chenopodiums are setting seed now. The tall Tree
Spinach or Magenta Spreen has lost the pink colour in the
leaves and the branches are bending down heavy with
seed pods. I leave as many as I can because the little
birds like Waxeyes and Finches come and feast on them
and I have my binoculars ready to watch their antics. You
can gather these seed heads, dry them and then add to
muesli or crackers to give you extra nutrition.

For drying the leaves as in the recipe below, I put
leaves and tips of branches in the warming drawer or 100
degree oven until crunchy, then rub it down to small
pieces. You can then put them in a coffee grinder for
powder. You can also freeze the leaves and then crush
them to small pieces and use in all sorts of dishes like
quiche or scrambled eggs or soup. It is such a versatile
plant full of Vitamins C and E, essential fatty acids, iron,
calcium, minerals, protein and antioxidants.
Seed Crackers
50g chia seeds, 50g linseed, 50g pumpkin seeds, 50g
sunflower seeds and 50g almond flour. I added 50g
chestnut flour (as an optional addition),
4Tbl magenta
spreen powder or magenta seeds or 2Tbl fennel seeds. 1
tsp salt, 1½ cups water. Mix all of the ingredients together
and leave to swell and thicken overnight or for an hour.
Line a baking tray with baking paper. Place serving spoon
amounts on the paper, flatten and form cracker shapes
Bake at 150°C for 1-1.5 hours or until done. I did not need
to turn them over, but you might need to. Peel off from the
paper and store in the fridge or freezer.
Upcoming workshop is 9th May
