Message from the Vice Chancellor, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka
I consider it my pleasure and privilege to send this message of
good wishes and congratulations to the Agri-Food Innova
2021 Competition and Exhibition.
Agricultural innovations have contributed enormously to the
transformation of Sri Lankan’s Agriculture sector over the
decade, strengthening our competitive position internationally
Yet, while investments in agriculture research continue to
slow down and increases in land use are no longer available,
technological competition grows from emerging agricultural export countries. Unless
we capitalize on our strong innovative potential, Ceylon agricultural Productivity gains
will be unable to sustain momentum in today’s changing global trade environment.
This is an event organized by AHEAD Faculty development Grant of the Faculty of
Agricultural Sciences aims to provide opportunity for University undergraduates and
School students to apply their knowledge, skills and talents from the classroom to a
real-world situation in the form of Agri-Food Innovation.
Finally all efforts have brought about the expected results.
This context will certainly help to merit award for promising innovation to both
undergraduates and school students in further strengthening the existing cordial
relations and innovation also it will encourage all types of contributions in the area
of Agriculture.
I sincerely wish success to the “Agri-Food Innova 2021 Competition and Exhibition”
all its endeavors!

Seeds Bomb

We can observe that trees are destroyed everywhere. Due to deforestation there are lack
of rain, prolong drought, increased temperature, and loss of habitats. Very valuable
trees from our country are destroyed. This causes global warming. As a solution to
this, we have developed a ‘Seed bomb”. These days, we can feel that environment has
been destroyed. Due to this there is no rain, there is drought. This has cause habitat
loss for living being and food scarcity. One of the main reasons for these is loss of trees.
If we stop deforestation, fauna and habitats will be protected and environment will be
preserved. This seeds bomb contains all the nutrients and fertilizer a plant needs to
grow. This seeds bomb will include 20-25 seeds of a particular endemic tree species.
This would be covered with clay soil mixtures and made in to globular formats. These
bombs also contain seeds which benefits all flora and fauna. When we see barren
lands and abundant places, we can throw these seed bombs in to these places. These
seeds will germinate when they receive the plant growth conditions and water. Thus,
deforested lands can be regained. Abundant barren lands would become flourished
places. Further, endemic trees of our country will also be protected.

Zero Budget Mealy Bug Controlling Pesticide
Mathura Arunthavam
J/Vembadi girls’ high school
In Sri Lanka, the Mealy bug affects all the plants especially Papaw, Shoe flower and
vegetables. Farmers and home gardeners finding it difficult to control these bugs in
plants. The plant affected by the Mealy gradually die. The flour like substances on
the surface of the mealy bug acts as a shield and protects the bugs. The Mealy bugs
recreate a viscous like substance which carries the eggs from the mealy bug. Ants
carry this viscous liquid and help the spread of these bugs. The mealy bug injects a
toxin as it feeds on leaves and fruit which results are chlorosis (yellowing), stunting
deformation on early leaf and fruit drop, buildup of honeydew. Sooty mold growing
on honeydew excreted by the mealy bugs interferes with photosynthesis and heavy
mealy bug infestations may kill plants. They attach themselves to the plant and secrete
a powdery wax layer used for protection. Some species of mealy bug lay their eggs
in the same waxy layer. Other species are born directly from the female. This is an
effort on my part to develop the economy of my country by eradicating harmful
parasites (Mealy bug) that destroy vegetables. This method is not costly and it is my
contribution for the uplift of our economy.

This creates the need for a device that can automatically and reliably feed to fish.
The purpose of this project is to design and automated fish feeder for household
use. Production and maintenance costs are minimized as renewable energy and
conventional water control techniques and are used in this project. This is an
automatic device to feed fish at predetermined amounts of food at a given time. This
device combines mechanical and electrical system to control fish feeding activity. This
machine consists of solar panel, battery, water filter and traditional water controller
(Diya holmana). The dispensed food will be controlled by traditional water controller
(diya holmana) which situated in a water tank. The mechanism here is to fill one end
of the aquifer with water and lower the other side is closed and the feed flow value
opens and the falls into the water. In this case, the electricity generated by the solar
panel for motor activation is obtained through cell.

Automatic Watering System for Indoor & Outdoor Gardening
Ositha Wijayarathna
Nalanda College Colombo - 10
When the moisture level of the soil in a flower bed is “LOW”, the moisture sensor will
detect it and send a signal to the microprocessor of the Arduino Board. Then the relay
will get the signal and the 12V water pump will be automatically switched on. Once
the moisture level of the flower bed becomes “HIGH”, the system will automatically
switch off. The practical importance of the this setup is that it helps in timely irrigation
of the beds and at the same time it conserves water preventing excessive irrigation. As
a result of this, the machine is highly advantageous for farmers who are cultivating in
any parts of the country. Farmers in dry zone can prevents over drying of their soils
preventing any kind of physiological stress to the plants. Moreover, the farmers in wet
zone can prevent too much moisture in their beds and can thus avoid many bacterial,
fungal or viral pathogenic attacks. Ultimately this innovation will aid to increase the
crop yield.

the main reason for making this product is to eliminate the monkey problem in the
area. This is used by closing the valve and putting marbles inside. Then you have to
pump air pressure up to 100 pounds. Finally after filling air inside, the valve should
be opened. You can shoot the marbles for 20 meters length. Through this type of
equipment monkeys and other alike macro pests can be frightened without causing
any kind of serious physical damage to the pest.

Automatic Plant Watering System
1D.K.K.T.G.Dissanayaka, 2K.G.T.Budhdheesha
Embilipitiya President’s College1,2
The watering system supplies water automatically when it identifies the soil moisture
level of the plantation. This system sends data to the farmer about the growing
conditions of the plantation. It saves money, time and labor cost of the farmers,
farmers can get better harvest, protect the plantation from dryness, farmers can get
the updates on plantation and it saves water. Plantations are getting dry as farmers are
unable to supply water when the plants need. So it’s a reason to destroy a plantation.
This system will be a solution for that problem. Problems that are solved by the system
include dryness of the soil of plantations, farmers not receiving updates about the
growing conditions of their plantations, and being unable to keep a continuous water
supply.

This innovation, Tree plucker, is useful to remove the shrubs, weeds, thorny bushes
with ease in the gardens and in agricultural lands. Usually, it is difficult to remove
thorny bushes. But with this tree plucker, it can be achieved easily. If hand is used to
remove the thorny bushes, hands get damaged and can even affect to other body parts.
Further, to remove well rooted weeds, it needs heavy man power. This product solves
those problems. This device has a long steel rod with a handle. At the other end it has
a section to hold the plants tightly. User can keep this part at the bottom trunk of the
tree you want to remove and hold it. Then you can firmly remove the plant parts with
uniformity. With the Corona impact in Sri Lanka, Government introduced a project
named “Saubhagya”. This is a home gardening project to overcome the needs at the
household level. In home gardening you need to prepare the land. For this purpose
tree plucker can be used effectively. This device can be also used to uproot cassava
plants with fully ripen yams. Hence, this is a gift for cassava cultivators to remove the
roots yams without damaging. If commercialized, this product would help the cassava
farmers.

Corn Seed Separator
Sakthikumar Bojasvini1, Sakthikumar Bhirajith2
Bt/Kallady Veloor Sri Sakthi Vidyalaya,Batticaloa
Innovation is a corn seed separator. This is a successful and efficient method to separate
corn seeds for the maize farmers. This device is weightless and portable. Thus can be
taken to any place. It can effectively separate seeds which have 100% germination
rates. Anybody can handle this device.Maize cultivation is practiced in around 30,000
ha of land in Sri Lanka, annually. This is second only to paddy cultivation in terms of
cultivable land extent. An old farmer was doing “chena’ cultivation in a place called
‘Karpaanaikulam’. When we visited that place he has completed the maize cultivation
and harvest. He was involved in separating the seeds from the pods. The old farmer and
his associates were engaged in this activity. We observed that they had damaged their
fingertips while doing this. We enquired about the reason for the damages. Their reply
was when they remove the seeds, a heat is generated and it damages their fingertips.
The old farmer has hired labor for this purpose since this incident. The farmer also
suggested that this process is very costly. It was observed that labors took much time
to finish this task. To solve all these issues we came up with this device. There are
many large scale corn seed separators in the market, targeting large producers. But
these cannot be afforded by smallholders and ‘chena’ cultivation farmers. This is
because these machines are expensive and large in scale. Since initial cost is high,
small holders who earn smaller profits cannot buy them. To solve these issues, we
came up with a smaller device which is portable. From this device we can save money,
time and causes less damage to the fingers. This will increase farmer’s profit. In large
machines, since it uses a large motor which damages the corn seeds, their germination
ability is affected. To solve this issue we have used a smaller motor which rotates in
a lower speed. Thus separated seeds’ germination ability is not affected. It also has a
handle. This can separate 90Kg corn seeds in an hour using 220V. These seeds have
high germination ability. This would solve many problems of smallholders and chena
cultivation farmers involved in maize cultivation.

Reusable Ekel Broom
T.M. Senesh Daham Kure
Sirikurusa College-Kaluthara
I thought of developing this product because ekel brooms in houses usually wear and
tear out easily. In the ekel broom, the only thing that get worn and torn out is the ekel
portion. In this ekel broom, when the ekel part is worn and torn out, it can be reused
without throwing away. This broom has two main sections; reusable portion and
portion that wear and tear out. Further, this broom has large number of ekels than
a normal ekel at the market place. So this is beneficial to people than a conventional
broom. This broom can be produced easily at a low cost and is durable than the other
type of ekel brooms.

Automatic Water Nozzle & Valve
Nethumi Suhansa Weerakoon
Thaksila Maha Vidyalaya, Gampaha
Problems this machine can solve include damaging crops due to excess water
retention, wastage of water due to ignorance, wastage of time due to heavy work
of watering the plants, electricity consumption and power wastage, washing off of
nutrients applied to the soil. This equipment does not consume electricity. Thus the
invention is sustainable in the long term use. Equipment used in the production of the
equipment are a nut, small tap, part sensitive to water/humidity, a small valve made of
a syringe. When water receives in to the machine, the diaphragm of the valve opens
and water removes out from the equipment. The amount of water can be controlled
using the tap. When enough water has been poured to the soil, the soil moistens
and along with that the water sensitive region of the machine also wets. Due to the
wetting of the area, the area gets expanded. As a result a pressure is applied on the
rubber diaphragm. This causes the valve to close down and stops the water coming
inside. The process repeats continuously.

Fruit Basket
S.R.G Udara Dewmika
Marawila/Athurugoda Kanishta Vidyalaya
Most of the people now days transport vegetables and fruits by climbing on them
and packing tightly in gunny bags. As a result majority of fruits and vegetables had to
be discarded due to rotting and bruising. Even though plastic crates are introduced
as a solution to this problem, transporters are not willing to use plastic crates. This
is because crates occupy large space to transport. My solution for this problem is
to introduce a basket that helps to transport fruits and vegetables without bruising
and damaging. Through this improved basket you can transport fruits and vegetables
freshly. Since the basket does not occupy mush space and do not wear and tear out
easily, it is long lasting. Moreover, the size of the basket can be adjusted according to
the size and shape of the vegetables/fruits transporting. After finish transporting the
empty baskets can be packed on each other saving space. I have developed the basket
as a prototype. By improving the prototype further, a contribution can be made to
lower the rising prices of vegetables and fruits.

This innovation is Palmyra Chocolate which is a traditional sweet item. This is based
on traditional Palmyra leather (“Panaattu”). There are abundant Palmyra trees in
Batticaloa, Jaffna, and Hambantota. In Batticaloa many Palmyra tress are cut. When
we inquired about this from the land owners they said, they have no use and income
from these trees, that is why these trees are cut. We though to solve this problem.
Palmyra leather is a product everybody prefers. So, using this one as an input, we
have developed a sweet item, which is known as Palmyra Chocolate. This possesses
Calcium, phosphorus, Thiamin, Vitamin C, Riboflavin like rich nutrients. This hinders
diseases like small pox and chicken pox. Since this product is produced from natural
products this is a healthy product and suitable for commercialization. Since this is a
tasty food item, from children to old peoples prefer these items. Form one Palmyra
fruit we can prepare 50 Palmyra chocolates. During the season, we can get 300 fruits
form one Palmyra tree. This brings an income for those who grow Palmyra. Further,
Palmyra leather is a value added product which can be sold at high prices. This also
reduces the destruction of Palmyra tress. This can be a good commercialize product.
