BAMBOO, A MODERN DAY ECONOMIC
WONDER! Elison Christopher Kunini
BN/15A/0623.
Bamboo is the fastest growing tree on earth, with the ability to grow up to 100cm (39) inches in 24hours,
bamboo can reach 45ft tall and 11 inches in diameter within 3-4 months. Although bamboo completes its
growing circle in 7-10 years, first commercial harvest can be made from the 3rdyear by selection.
Nigerian climate offers a promising environment for growing timber bamboo species. The need for
diversity in raw material acquisition for the resource base industries will go a long way to encourage
conservation of our scarce and or “over exploited” natural (especially timber) resources.
The most endowed States in Nigeria in terms of bamboo occurrences are Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Edo,
Delta, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Cross-river, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra and Imo States.
Bamboo is superior in tensile strength to other building materials. Tensile strength refers to the amount of
tensile (stretch) stress a material can withstand before breaking or failing. As a comparison, steel can resist
a highest possible tension of 37kN/cm² but bamboo can have a tensile strength of 40kN/cm².
The bamboo industry is new in Nigeria and has huge potentials though there are many bamboo products
to which the Nigerian market is not exposed to (e.g. bamboo roofing sheets, bamboo housing, fabric made
from bamboo is incredibly soft, smooth and luxuriously comfortable).
Currently, dealers are buying bamboo from wild through village heads and farm owners. The problem is
that, these bamboo are found in the remote areas where road network are usually poor, carried in a big
slow moving trucks to the city which could take weeks in some cases. The existing bamboo are removed for
food crop farming, road constructions and building and replacements are rarely made.
Due to the fast growing nature of bamboo and being the highest terrestrial biomass accumulator it opens
up the opportunity for the renewable biomass
to energy potential. The bio energy potential for
bamboo plant material is discussed in the following
categories:
Solid fuels: Charcoal, Bio Coal, Bio pellets,
direct solid combustion already has a very vibrant
Solid fuel replacement manifests itself in the
international market and coal with sustainability
requirement to replace European market is in the
grown biomass. The renewable targets and

countering carbon cap
[19]
firing biomass or switching electrification plants over to direct biomass power stations.
Liquid fuels: Pyrolysis oil, biomass to liquids (second generation direct drop-in fuels):The eminence of
first generation liquid fuels is fast on track and a 30% yield is achievable from biomass. The United States
has subsidized the industry heavily with funding incentives and front runners in the market are already
upgrading fast pyrolysis oils to petrol, diesel and jet fuel.
Gaseous fuels: Gasification co & tri-generation (Heating, ventilation and cooling) biomass to electricity
and heat harvesting by gasification has been shown to be a stable technology with its base in the late
1800's. There are over a thousand plants across Asia and Africa, making use of this technology of extracting
wood gas or producer gas from biomass for utilisation in gas turbines and internal combustion motors with
generating sets.
It is of note that India and China are leading the field. South Africa is the world's leader in bamboo carbon
development. Global exports of bamboo products reached USD 38-billion in 2015 and projections shows
that it will reach between USD 58-billion and USD 60-billion in 2017 (INBAR, 2015).
China is by far the largest exporter with 46% market share followed by Indonesia (16%) and Vietnam (5%).
The biggest importers are European Union (29%), USA (18%) and Japan (10%). Nigeria thus has an
opportunity to apply best practice to its infant bamboo industry to be one of the leaders in the world.
Nigeria has a renewable fuels target that can hardly be met by the current bio-diesel and ethanol
industries. Biomass developments and especially the bamboo industry will be a viable feedstock for the
emergence of the second generation technologies in Nigeria.
Over 100,000 bamboo poles can be harvested from one hectare bamboo plantation, a bamboo pole is sold
at N300 naira in Abuja and N250 naira in Lagos which is about 25 million naira sales per hectare.
It should be clear by now that bamboo offers a great potential which if taken advantage of, would lead to a
tremendous financial breakthrough. Therefore, it is critical to raise awareness of bamboo and bamboo
products in Nigeria to stimulate the demand. Bamboo is certainly an alternative to oil revenue with no

SERVICE YEAR IN RETROct’2015 OSPECT
Introduction
The journey of thousand miles starts with just a step; and every journey orchestrated
through such step is surely in time and must come to an abrupt end one day. Hence,
life can be said to be verisimilitude. Human beings necessarily must experience it,
perhaps, this must have compelled us to have a share of this once in a lifetime
experience of national service to our fatherland. Therefore, there is every need to
really share a bit of our untold tales in the course of the privileged journey.
The tales are clear reflections of corps members from various local government
councils in the Benue state... It will not be wrong to deduce that it has all the way been
a worthwhile experience, a home away from home; in short, the experience is quite
piquant. So, we cannot wait to sing We Have Come Home like our heroes in the poem
of J.P.Clark. Sit back and brace yourself to enjoy the tales page.

I must start by thanking God for ordering my steps into Benue state and making use of my
talent for the benefit of humanity. If I were told I would end up serving at Otukpo, then, i
would have said such person must be a false prophet. However, if I were to serve again,
now it is either Benue state or nothing. I must say the ldoma people are very homely and
welcoming; their rich culture and norms distinguished them. I was opportune to go round nine
local government councils in the state to train students on the effective use of computer in
preparation to writing JAMB CBT examinations and that gave me the opportunity to give
back to the community; and series of testimonies confirm this, all glory to God. Finally I want

fufu with numerous soup. The family I lodged in kept loading me with fufu
accompanied with frog meat- Chinese meat. It's a good delicacy! Tiv people are
very hospitable.
The Tiv do not joke with their culture, they dance very uniquely well. As a corps member,
you will surely like the dance and its unique music; it was full of fun.
There are lots of experiences to share. If you are a corper, pray to serve in Tiv land. It's a
wonderful place to serve the nation.

The Tiv people in Amaafu are accommodating, respectful and friendly but the environment
is not conducive.Students do pay us visit at the lodge to help out with one or two things, at
times they do come with fruits like Mango, Orange, etc Things are very expensive in
Amaafu village except their local products.
If you are the adventurous type, Amaafu is the best place to experience. At first, it was
difficult to cope with the environment but later i got used to it. There are students around
that do keep us company, trying to teach us TIV language, help us to run some errands, etc.
The village was OK anyway but the fact that they have very poor network and don't know
what is electricity makes it annoying. SANUSI MONDAY OHIOSUMUAN

My advice to female corpers is that we should take this service seriously

available for corps members, as this will be useful to us during and after

Let us hold firm to our various religious believes, be good, show love and
care to ourselves and to people around us. Let us shun discrimination,
female circumcision, abortion and stigmatization so Nigeria will live in
harmony. Youth obey the clarion call.
