SALMI BINTI MUHAMAD SEKOLAH : SEKOLAH KEBANGSAAN SERI IMPIAN TAJUK JURNAL : USING THE ‘HAMBURGER’ STRATEGY TO IMPROVE YEAR 5 PUPILS’ WRITING PERFORMANCE ISU YANG DIFOKUSKAN: During the first week of internship, I was assigned as English teacher for 5 Al Farabi. The pupils’ writing performance were in the average level. Most pupils were in either Band 3, Band 4 and Band 5. In the first week, I teach the pupils on writing an email. I realised that most of pupils were struggling when completing the task. This indicates that the pupils are having problem in writing paragraph. ANALISIS YANG DIFOKUSKAN: A good paragraph consists of 5 components which are content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanics. Based on my observation, the pupils were struggling the most with the content and organization in writing. The pupils were having trouble to write a good content when writing the email. Even though a guide was prepared for them, it was still hard for certain pupils to write the email properly. Next, the pupils also had problem with the organization of their writing. Most pupils did not write closing sentence in their email. KAJIAN LAMPAU (LITERATURE REVIEW) TERHADAP ISU (PENGALAMAN ATAU KAJIAN LEPAS): The ‘Hamburger’ strategy was adopted from research by Nopita, Septy and Harha (2014). They defined the ‘Hamburger’ strategy as a writing organizer strategy that visually outlines the key components of a paragraph. Rog and Kropp (2004) stated that the ‘Hamburger’ strategy can be a starting point to encourages young learner in writing as the formula is easy and
simple for the them to remember. Besides, it also motivates the learner to make a good writing as such as a delicious hamburger. Experimental research by Napitupulu (2018) reiterated that the ‘Hamburger’ strategy significantly affected the students’ writing skill in writing descriptive text. Besides, research by Anggelina (2019) also stated that the ‘Hamburger’ strategy helped in improving students’ writing skill. She further explained that the ‘Hamburger’ strategy consisted of the effective teaching procedures that significantly encourage and improve the students’ writing skill. CADANGAN DAN IDEA PENYELESAIAN MASALAH: Based on the analysis of the issue stated above, there are one way that I would suggest which is using the ‘Hamburger’ strategy. This writing strategy is very practical and pupils can use it to help them improve their writing performance. TEMPOH MASA PENYELESAIAN: 2 weeks TINDAKAN SUSULAN: In next lesson, I will start to introduce the Hamburger strategy to the pupils. I will instruct the pupils to create the own ‘Hamburger’ replica using coloured paper. This will help the pupils to understand the concept of the ‘Hamburger’ strategy better. RUJUKAN: Anggelina, S.
