McCormick Area Veterans Association Toccoa, GA Field Trip
by WAYNE EHRENSBERGER
N THE CLEAR, crisp morning of October 22nd,
an enthusiastic party of 26 set out from the SLV
Rec. Center on a journey to Toccoa, GA, to tour
three prime sites of interest in the town and nearby
local. The entourage consisted of members of
MAVA, the Long Cane Chapter NSDAR, a visiting
former SLV resident and MAVA founder, plus non-MAVA village
veterans and family.
Upon reaching the first destination, the cadre proceeded beneath
the Camp Toccoa at Currahee archway, past the guard house and
onto the original WWII paratrooper training base. The base where
all initial paratroopers were trained plus some other units, opened in
1942 and was later made famous in the book/miniseries, “Band of
Brothers.” The camp also housed POW’s. “Currahee,” a Cherokee
term meaning “stand alone,” is the name of the mountain rising
800’ above the base. The cadence, “3 Miles Up, 3 Miles Down”
still echoes o’er the area. It is shouted by veterans, active duty
personnel and regular folks from across the country and around
the world who continue to make the now popular training run
… or walk, albeit none did this time. The camp also contains the
original HQ building, 2 barracks (2 more underway), C-47 jump
plane, memorials and more, with military gear and related material
throughout.
Our visit was followed by a cafeteria style lunch in Toccoa
at “Shirley’s Soul Food” where the group relaxed in a separate
banquet room while feasting on succulent fried and roasted chicken,
pork chops, mac’ & cheese, 4 veggie options, corn bread, banana
pudding, iced tea, etc. at a very reasonable price. Many contributed
to Shirley’s local charitable causes.
After that the bunch literally crossed the tracks to the large,
beautifully restored, still active, historic train depot. The depot
houses the Welcome Center and surprisingly extensive Currahee
Military and Stephens Co. Museum which contains more material
related to Camp Toccoa at Currahee, plus wonderful displays of
objects from many other eras.
The temperature reached the low 70’s, ideal for the gorgeous
fall setting of the final stop on the beautiful Toccoa Falls College
Campus, After passing through the main gate of the private
Christian College, the troops soon reached the Visitor Center/
Bookshop and entry to Toccoa Falls. It is one of the highest,
free-falling waterfalls east of the Mississippi River at 186’. Always
picturesque, with many weddings and special events held there, it
was a scene of horror in November of 1977 when the earthen dam
of the old reservoir above the falls, weakened further by heavy rain,
ruptured late at night, sending a flash flood that destroyed the area
where many of those who worked on campus lived. A tall granite
monument stands near the falls along the easy gravel path engraved
with the names of the 39 who perished.
The hosts at each location were very welcoming, knowledgeable
and pleased to have the group visit. We arrived back at SLV on
schedule after an exceedingly satisfying adventure.
MAVA Chairman, Harry Klug, summed up the overall experience,
“We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.”

by JIM SNYDER
ON OCTOBER 25TH,
the Outdoor Adventure Club
completed the second of two
annual kayak training sessions.
Participants were invited to either "audit" the class and listen to all
the information or participate in "on water" drills. Included in the
training were; types of kayaks; equipment needed; safety; paddling;
transport; personal flotation devices; and more. Immediately
following the training, other members of the Outdoor Adventure
Club were invited to a paddle along the lake past all of the
campsites at Elijah Clark State Park.

In the end, all three were very excited to complete the trip and
accomplish something that challenged mind, body, and spirit. The
journey was a distance of about 17.5 miles and about 7 hours of
paddling. The rule of thumb, about 1,000 strokes of a paddle per
mile; yep, the math gets a little scary! Not sure what was the most
difficult: the last hour of paddling; carrying the kayaks out of the
water at the destination; or figuring out how to explain where one
has kayaked from to people during the second half of the trip.
Nice “bucket list” adventure Stacy, Lisa, and Jim.
