Luman Slade, SLV Resident, Publishes New Book for Young Readers

SAVANNAH LAKES VILLAGE resident Luman Slade has
published another book for young readers. His new book, The Day
Mother Earth Cried, was written for children age ten and up. As is the
case with all good books for children, adults will enjoy this book
also. Luman’s books can be purchased locally at Strom’s Drugs,
The MACK, and Hickory Knob State Park gift shop—or through
Amazon.

ABOUT THE BOOK: The Day Mother Earth Cried

THE STORY BEGINS in the year 1864 in a Cheyenne
encampment in Colorado Territory. Elina, a young Cheyenne Indian
girl, narrowly escapes death when her village is attacked by White
soldiers. She, along with her grandfather, Spotted Owl, and her
childhood sweetheart, Little Wolf, are among the few survivors of
the massacre. Her search for a better place to live—a place where
Mother Earth and her children live in harmony—takes Little Wolf
and her to new lands where they encounter oppressed people of
other cultures—Negros and Mexicans. They too, she learns, have
suffered at the hands of White settlers. The story is set in a time
in America’s history when the U.S. Government—in its quest for
additional territory—is rapidly and ruthlessly displacing native
American and Mexicans. The institution of slavery is also being
challenged. The year 1864 is a tumultuous one in U.S. History.•

GARDEN CLUB

Snapdragons q June Garden of the Month Begonvilla p

Drift Roses q by NANCY RENSTROM Gailardia p
THE MCCORMICK GARDEN Club has selected the
home of Allan Lang located at 105 Palmetto Dr. as the June
Garden of the Month. This garden is relatively new but is
already showing Allan’s affinity for all things that bloom. The
parade of color starts early with pansies and snap dragons. The
next wave of color, in the form of New Guinea impatiens, is
already nestled amongst the pansies. There is a virtual tie for
the brightest source of color in the yard between all of the
Drift Roses and the bougainvillea. The bougainvillea is intensely
colored but the roses win with sheer numbers. As the weather
warms the daisies, gaillardia, miniature gardenias, coreopsis, and
heliopsis will begin to bloom. Just to prove that everything in
his garden does not have to bloom, there is Pink Muhly Grass
along the property line that will provide concentrated line of
color in the late summer. The Lang garden is the botanical
equivalent of an artist palette with swaths of color everywhere.•

their quarterly fun shoot “Pins & Plates.” This fun
shoot involves shooting eight bowling pins and four

Caribbean islands in 1493. They became
wild and later Spanish explorers brought
a few pigs to what is now South Carolina
for food. Originally the hogs spread out
along the coast. Much later around 1900,
hunt enthusiasts introduced Eurasian wild
boar, a different animal, in various states
for sport hunting. At first contained in
large fenced areas for wealthy hunters,
these animals occasionally escaped and
ultimately bred with southern feral hogs.
South Carolina animals continued to
migrate inland. By the 1980’s feral hogs,
(wild hogs, Eurasian boar and hybrids) had
infiltrated 26 South Carolina counties. By
2008, these prolific animals populated all 46
South Carolina counties. Current numbers
put them at 150,000 statewide and growing.
Nationwide they populate at least 39 states,
primarily in the South with pockets in some
northern states where rogue boar have
gone wild.

Feral hogs are usually black, brown, or a
combination with some white. Males can
weigh over 450 pounds. More muscular and
leaner than domestic pigs, they are largely
nocturnal, using acute hearing and smell
rather than their poor eyesight to find food.
Usually they meander but can run up to
30 mph, jump 3 feet and climb fences 6
feet high. So here is the rub. Their prolific
birth numbers (up to 12 piglets per litter
with two to three litters per year) make
control an enormous task. Like all pigs,
they are omnivores preferring roots, nuts,
bulbs, tubers, mushrooms, and especially
acorns, but will eat some grasses and even
carrion. Calves and fawns are occasionally
