Dorn Complex Historical Marker Unveiled by TONIA "TONI" MOORE The South Carolina Historical Marker Program was officially established in 1936 “to have the direction, and control of the marking of historical sites, or houses and localities.” South Carolina Historical Markers identify and interpret places of importance to achieve an understanding of South Carolina’s past. This includes sites of significant events, or at historic properties such as buildings, sites, structures; or as examples of institutions or individuals significant in local, state, or national history. Recently, the Dorn Mill Complex Historical Marker was unveiled and joined approximately 1,900 other historical markers that have been approved and erected in South Carolina. As you travel throughout the state, it might be of interest to you to note that the earliest markers, cast from 1936 to 1954, have a circular device at the top and feature a palmetto tree and the letters SC. These initial markers are gray with raised gray or black letters. Markers cast from 1954 to 1990 have a triangular shape centered at the top with a state flag and feature raised silver letters on dark blue markers. The most recent markers cast since 1990 are silver with raised black letters, as you will see were used for the Dorn Mill Complex marker now in place. The South Carolina Historical Maker program receives no regular state funding and has always depended on the citizens of South Carolina to suggest, document, sponsor, maintain and pay for markers. The McCormick County Historical Commission, commissioners Jim Brady, Marjorie Brosseau, George Patterson, and President Tonia Moore, welcomed a group of supporters to the marker dedication. Brady acknowledged the many people and organizations who helped in this effort, including McCormick Mayor Roy Smith and the McCormick Town Council, Dolly Franklin, Nathan Jones, Calvin Chiles, Curtis Dansby, Alvin Jennings, and Fay Hood; along with funds from the Town of McCormick’s Business Incentive Grant. Also recognized were Clay and Beth Antonakos, owners of Lee Builders Inc., for their support in storing, transporting, and erecting the marker. This historical marker was processed, designed, and authorized by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, a process that took nine months to complete. Brady closed his remarks by thanking Larnell and Diane Leverette, owners of Visions & Dreams Special Events for catering the refreshments and all those in attendance for their continued support and contributions to the Dorn Mill Complex year after year. The McCormick County Historical Commission invites all area residents to visit the marker located adjacent to the Weigh Station on the Dorn Mill Complex in Downtown McCormick. Until you have a chance to see the marker in person, here is the content recorded: “ The Dorn Mill Complex was an important industrial site for early 20th century McCormick. It began in 1899 as McCormick Cotton Oil Company. The multi-story brick building near the railroad tracks was built at that time to house a cottonseed oil mill and two steam engines. The engines powered the mill, and a cotton gin was also located on the site. The Anderson Phosphate and Oil Company acquired the complex in 1902 and sold it to the DornFinley Company in 1917. Within a few years, brothers M.G. and J.J. Dorn secured sole ownership of the site and converted the oil mill into a grist mill. It became part of a larger complex of warehouses, sheds, and other industrial buildings that extended west and north across the railroad tracks and served primarily as Dorn Lumber Mill. The grist mill closed in the 1940’s. In addition to the 1899 oil mill, remaining buildings included a c. 1930 brick cotton ginnery and a c. 1900 wood frame office.” 6 • May 2024•SavannahShorelines.com

The McCormick Backpack Ministry Child Hunger in America Backpack Honored over 80 McCormick Volunteers by BECKY SAPPENFIELD AMERICA HAS MORE than thirteen million children who are food insecure and struggling with access to food. Thankfully school aged children receive meals at school as a source of food, but it is the weekends that children are deprived, and most Americans cannot perceive. Many children are being raised by a single parent, guardian, foster parent, or grandparents. Nine years ago, Rev. Paul Wood of the McCormick Methodist Church knew of a need to provide basic food to impoverished school-aged children to supplement their weekend nutritional needs. In 2015 The McCormick Backpack Ministry, a non-profit organization, was established. Catherine Callaham, who has 54 years of experience in the McCormick Schools, knows the families of all the children and directs and maintains this part of the program. She extends herself to help families who are in need with counseling and encouragement and makes home visits. Thanks to over 80 volunteers who pick up food at Food Lion and deliver it to our work center. These volunteers also unpack the food and pack it into individual bags to deliver to the schools. The cost of food has not increased due to the generosity of Food Lion. We are blessed to have many churches supporting us over the years. Lutheran Church by the Lake, McCormick Methodist Church, Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Shiloh A.M.E. Church, McCormick First Baptist Church, Republican United Methodist Church,Mt Zion A.M.E. The Backpack Ministry honored our heroes at a luncheon on March 12th held at LCBTL ARC. An incredible lunch prepared by Visions and Dreams Special Events Catering was provided by Larnell Leverette. GOD BLESS AMERICA was sung by Barbara Boddie. Door Prizes were donated by Michelle's Pizza, Thompson Hardware, Little Italy, Beth of Red Rooster, Tracy of M.T. ROD & GUN CLUB DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION Rod & Gun Shamrock Shoot by JANET BLOUIN THE ROD & GUN Club held the first annual “Shamrock Shoot” on Saturday at the SLV gun range. Shooters had 7 shots to shoot 5 targets—4 balloons, each hung at the end of a string and one green St. Patty’s Day coin taped to the target board. There was no time limit, and shooters could attempt the targets up to three times. Points were awarded for each attempt. Any shooter who successfully shot the green coin was awarded the coin as a keepsake. To add to the shooters’ enjoyment, there were two divisions. There was a division for those who had previously won any competition, or who considered themselves “expert” shooters. The other division was for shooters new to competition. Congratulations to the winners of each division: Paul Fitzgerald and Dave Huminski. An additional prize was awarded to the person who was dressed to best represent St. Patrick’s Day—Janie Clark! No shooter went home empty handed—everyone received a gold coin to keep in their pocket… National Day of Prayer • May 2, 2024 by PEGGY HARLA Long Cane Chapter NSDAR T he first Thursday in May is designated by the Congress of the United States for an annual observance of the power of prayer. Law requires that each year the President sign a proclamation that encourages all Americans to pray. The focus of the National Day of Prayer is to ask American citizens “to turn to God in prayer and meditation.” Although our founding fathers used their faith as a base to frame our government and Constitution, no day was formally set aside for prayer in those early years. Over time there were days when people were encouraged to pray. The first occasion was in 1775 when the Continental Congress stated in a proclamation that “a day of public humiliation, fasting, and prayer” be created. In1863 President Lincoln made April 30 “a day of fasting and prayer” by congressional resolution. But it wasn’t until 1952 when President Harry S. Truman and the United States Congress co-founded a designated day. In his proclamation Truman named “a National Day of Prayer, on which all of us, in our churches, in our homes, and in our hearts, may beseech God to grant us wisdom to know the course which we should follow, and strength and patience to pursue that course…“ The law was amended in 1988 by President Reagan to move the designated day to the first Thursday of May. At its origin, the day was created in celebration of the Christian faith, in recognition of the faith base of the predominantly European descent of the American people. Over time the American population has become more and more varied with each culture bringing its own beliefs and religions, thus diversifying and enriching this experience of coming together in prayer. The National Day of Prayer website cites a number of interesting facts: 1. Christians represent 73.7% of America’s religious population. 2. Worldwide, Islam is the fastest-growing religion and the Muslim population is projected to continue to grow at an even faster rate than in the past. 3. About 45% of Americans pray every day and 65% pray about once a month. 4. 21% of Americans pray to win the lottery. In 2008 the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) filed suit in federal district court alleging that the National Day of Prayer caused “concrete injury.” In 2010 U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb ruled that the National Day of Prayer was unconstitutional “May your heart be light and happy, may your smile be big and wide, and may your pockets always have a coin or two inside.” —An Irish Proverb 12 • May 2024•SavannahShorelines.com

The ruling found that the FFRF had not been harmed by the National Day of Prayer and that “a feeling of alienation cannot suffice as injury” and that Presidential “requests do not obligate citizens to comply and do not encroach on citizens’ rights.” The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is a nonprofit, nonpolitical women’s volunteer service organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Congratulations to all participants. HALLMARK OF DEFENSIVE DRIVING by JOHN COMPSTON L AST MONTH'S COLUMN finished with the question, are you a defensive driver. Many drivers will respond, of course, I always follow the law. And while it is commendable to always follow the law, there is much more to defensive driving. It is having the right attitude and strategies that focus on preparing for and anticipating potential problems that can assist with reducing the risks of having an accident. There is a fairly long checklist of items that constitute defensive driving. But this month, let's focus on just the things that can reduce the risk of an accident before the vehicle is ever put in drive. It is important to always keep your vehicle well maintained. Follow the owner's manual for the maintenance schedule for that particular vehicle. Changing the oil, oil filter and air filter should all be part of regular maintenance. Each month check the tires for proper air pressure, while also looking for uneven tire wear and ensuring the tires have sufficient tread. When was the last time that the brake fluid was checked, or the transmission fluid? Is the windshield washer fluid checked regularly or just when it is empty? At least monthly, are the lights inspected to ensure all are working properly including the brake lights and the blinkers. When were the brakes last inspected? Don't keep putting off that which needs attention. Proper maintenance and simple inspections can all play a role in preventing breakdowns. Unfortunately, every year motorist who have broken down are hit by a drunk driver and killed while sitting in their vehicle awaiting assistance. Before setting out on a short or long drive(trip) have a plan. Individually, what is the best time to be driving. Some drivers should avoid night time driving. What are the safest roads to utilize to get where you are going. What is the weather forecast? Having a plan should include the willingness to modify it if there are weather changes. On longer road trips predetermine locations to take a break from driving and get out to stretch the legs. And having a plan will reduce the need to rely on a navigation device which can be a distraction particularly if driving solo. Consider, having the "do not disturb while driving" turned on as it will help to avoid using the phone as one drives. Again, reducing another distraction. And lastly, consider the primary causative factors that contribute to traffic fatalities. Speed, driving impaired and failing to buckle up. Prior to putting the car in drive, take action to address two of these. The first is to never drink and drive, and secondly to always have yourself and everyone in the car buckled up. Defensive drivers always do what they can to minimize the risk of being involved in an accident. Being prepared before putting the vehicle in drive is important. Next month we will come back to this topic focusing on defensive strategies when actually driving. 14 • May 2024•SavannahShorelines.com

Cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid 50's made the trek through the woods a nice respite from the wind. The trail was constructed by volunteers within the SLV community, and hikers had the opportunity to look for 9 small houses located along the trail depicting landmarks in the town of McCormick. Crossing Huguenot Parkway, the hike continued past the established Rail Trail, to the Badwell Cemetary. Rich in history, it is the resting place of many French Huguenot settlers, the Petigru family, and those who resided (including slaves) on the Badwell Plantation during the 1700-1800s. The hike returned to the Monticello Golf Course, where several members enjoyed lunch at Monti's restaurant. Still more adventures ahead with the OAC this month, and throughout the year. Cheering, jeering, and coaching from the sidelines was allowed (but of course not while the ball was in play). The Final Four Playoff was held March 13th, followed by potluck, photo ops, banter, and trophy presentations, for all players, subs, spouses & friends. The results of the Final Four Playoffs were as follows: • Team Sullivan - First Place • Team Jones - Second Place • Team Commish - Third Place • Team Marianne C4 - Fourth Place Congratulations to all the Final Four winners, players and subs for an entertaining season, and especially to D’Commish Doug Chalifour and the Captains for all their efforts to make this league once again a huge success here in SLV. The Luck of the Irish shone down on us… by JOE LOCKE Founder and President SLV Pickleball Club THE SUN IS shining, the birds are singing, and the Pickle People are having a great time at SLV. The last few months have been a busy and exciting time for the Blazing Paddles Pickleball Club and the SLV Pickleball community. From a wacky and fun St. Pickleball Day event, to our wildly successful game night,to the exciting completion of our new Mixed Doubles League, to skills training to winning medals at a Valentine’s Tournament, there was something for everyone. And, we are just getting started, as 2024 will be packed with lots of fun, social, and competitive events. St. Pickleball Day was a Blast On a beautiful Sunday afternoon March 157th the Blazing Paddles Pickleball Club hosted our annual St. Pickleball’s Day social event. Although it was dark with some rain in the morning, the clouds parted, and we had a wonderful day in the sun (hence the Lucky part). We played lots of fun games, like Opposite Hand, 3 on 3, 2 paddles at once, golf putting with a Pickleball, count the bounces on your paddle, etc. We even had a costume contest, which was won by my good friend Dave Hiney and his trusty Kilt. Lots of cool Irish Prizes were given away, with the Irish Gnomes the big hit. We also had delicious Irish Cookies from Chef Joe at the Bakery. Thanks to the Social Events Committee, the volunteers, and all the folks who made it a fun day. Your support is greatly appreciated. Also, thanks to the Sunday Afternoon Social Play folks who were kind enough to give up their time slot so we could hold the event. Congratulations to our Mixed Doubles Winter League Champions On a beautiful Monday afternoon on March 4th, our Mixed Doubles Winter League session completed play. The league consisted of 15 mixed double pairs in 3 separate divisions and ran for 6 weeks. The play was fun and spirited, and for the most part the married couples teams got along… Congratulations to the following champions: • Competitive Division: Annie Hiney and Jerry Marion • Intermediate Division: Claire Volding and Scott Breach Thanks to all the players and subs who participated in this league, and a big shout out to Mark Danielski for organizing and running this new league. We hope to offer another mixed double session over the summer. Skills Training for 3.0/3.5 Level Players Bob Keating, Blazing Paddles club member and Certified trainer, organized and ran a 3-week skills training session for twelve 3.0/3.5 players. The 3 sessions were 1) Dinking, 2) Drop Shots, and 3) Precision Over Power, and were focused on improving specific skill levels. Thanks very much to Bob for volunteering his time, and to Chuck Howell for his assistance. We hope to offer many more training opportunities going forward. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” In a moment of unexpected, sharp pain—a pain unlike any other I had experienced before—a realization dawned upon me, a lesson wrapped in discomfort. Life, with its unpredictable twists and jolts, sometimes brings us to our knees. Not the brief, momentary discomforts that we can easily shrug off, but the kind that lingers, challenging us to face our vulnerability head-on. Three weeks ago, amidst the routine of everyday life, a sudden, stabbing pain shot through my leg, a harbinger of weeks filled with doctor visits, an emergency trip, an MRI, and a nerve block seeking relief. The physical ordeal was daunting, yet it unveiled a profound truth about the human experience: we are all bearing burdens, whether visible or hidden beneath the surface. This journey through pain reminded me that, often, we trudge on, silently shouldering our hurts, believing in the fallacy of solitude in suffering. Yet, this couldn't be further from the truth of our existence. We are woven into the fabric of community, crafted with the inherent capacity to uplift, to empathize, and to love— extending and receiving support is etched into our very design. Savannah Lakes Village has been a testament to this communal bond, showcasing extraordinary acts of kindness and support. Here, I've found a community unlike any other, a reminder that we are gifted with an unparalleled opportunity to connect and care. It's a privilege to witness and participate in this collective expression of empathy, kindness, and grace, transcending backgrounds, beliefs, and worldviews. In this shared slice of creation, we discover our interconnectedness, our shared humanity. My journey with pain is ongoing, with more treatments on the horizon. Yet, it's the compassion and support from neighbors—my extended family here—that imbue me with strength and hope. It's a reminder that the acts of kindness we extend, however small they may seem, are monumental to those on the receiving end. This shared experience calls us toward a greater understanding, kindness, and the willingness to bear one another's burdens. In doing so, we not only alleviate the weight of individual struggles but also fortify the bonds of our community, creating a sanctuary of support and healing. Let us continue to weave these threads of kindness, empathy, and understanding into the fabric of our daily lives, nurturing a community where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued. In moments of struggle, may we remember that we are not islands of suffering but part of a vast, interconnected community capable of immense love and support. Together, let's embrace this journey, bolstered by the strength found in unity and the comfort in knowing that no one has to walk their path alone. Thank you for the warm welcome into Savannah Lakes Village. I look forward to serving with and among you all. 24 • May 2024•SavannahShorelines.com

TAKE A CHANCE ON LOVE! My name is Alphie and I love to sit on a windowsill and catch sunbeams or relax in a nice screen porch. I am a bit shy, but if you are patient and allow me to take the reins I am certain we can become friends. You can help me embrace my inner “lap cat.”! I do enjoy meeting and playing with other cats and kittens. I would not mind a good game of laser tag followed by a tasty treat. I have my paws crossed for a quiet home with lots of toys and a loving family, maybe with an older kid or two to grow up with. My birthday is 5/26/22. I am up to date on shots, neutered and microchipped. I am grateful for my time here at the shelter (a wonderful group of humans!), but there’s nothing like having your own forever home. I hope you can make that happen for me! A SWEET TREAT! They call me Candi – and yes it IS because I am a sweetie. I love to cuddle and am not embarrassed to show my loved ones some PDA (pup display of affection) for all the world to see. My birthday is 10/25/2021 and I’m a trim 50 pounds with all my shots and spaying behind me. I am even microchipped. Besides my sunny disposition and good looks, I must also share that I am a graduate of the Ferry Good Dog Training program. My teacher thought I was “hilarious” and that I was fun to work with and easy to love. He also confirmed my love of treats. Under his tutelage, I learned life skills like “sit,” “down”, “place,” “come,” and “stay “. I am also crate trained and won’t pull you down when we take a lovely walk together. I am totally open to learning even more skills and maybe a trick or two. I am ready to join your family and start to make memories to last a lifetime. Can we make that happen?
