Education Officer Chester Mott teaching the ABC3 class in early March. AMERICA’S BOATING CLUB – THURMOND LAKE 2023 Boating Season has Officially Begun The 2023 boating season has officially begun, so it’s time to plan for a year of fun: get your boat ready and become active in your local boating club: America’s Boating Club – Thurmond Lake. Last year, the squadron hosted more than three dozen different events and doubled its membership. When you join this club, you’re joining a community that was built by boaters, for boaters. Here is a summary of the benefits. Learn boating skills. Better boaters feel more confident on the water, operating their boat and in the company of other boaters. They are boaters who boat more, boat more safely and have more fun. You can improve your boating skills and knowledge through a full range of nationally recognized boating education for both novice and experienced recreational boaters. You can get boating education your way: in the classroom with certified and knowledgeable instructors where you benefit from group interaction, on-the water where you gain hands-on skills, and online seminars where you can learn at your own convenience. The 8-hour “America’s Boating Course” (better known as the ABC3 class) is recommended for new boaters and those who may need to brush up on their skills. Information on the classes may be obtained from Education Officer Chester Mott at [email protected]. Engage in fun boating activities. America’s Boating Club – Thurmond Lake sponsors all kinds of social events onthe-water and on shore. Plans have been completed for dinners, raft-ups, competitive events and more. For more information on these activities, contact Administrative Officer Ken Wiles at [email protected]. Two special events include the annual boat parade in early July in celebration of our nation’s independence and participation in McCormick’s annual Christmas parade. Executive Officer Michael Moore at [email protected] can provide you information on these and other outside events. Connect with the boating community. America’s Boating Club members take our responsibility to the community. Sharing our skills and knowledge benefits the entire community and boaters. Free Vessel Safety Checks are provided by a certified Vessel Safety Inspector who will examine your boat and give you a list of items that need to be addressed. The sticker you receive may provide you with a discount on your boat insurance. If you are interested in having your boat examined, please contact Certified Vessel Inspector Dave Kelley at [email protected]. Membership in America’s Boating Club – Thurmond Lake will help you create a lifetime of memories on the water, on shore and in the community. For more information on this fun club, contact Commander Bill O’Neill at [email protected].• "Plans have been completed for dinners, raft-ups, competitive events and more." 10 • April 2023•SavannahShorelines.com

GOLF HELLO FOLKS, IT’S me again. I hope all is well as we are approaching spring. I would like to recognize our winners of the annual Valentine’s Day mixed team event. • Flight 1 was won by Rick & Jennifer Cromwell and Dave & Mary Markel. • Flight 2 was won by Michael & Jennifer Hunter and Warren Bours & Bob Milar. Congratulations to the winners and all who participated! On March 6, 2023 Jennifer Hunter recorded her first “hole in one” on Hole #8, par 3 at Monticello. The drinks were flowing thanks to Jen. Congrats to Jen! After a particularly poor round, Barry Fairley spotted a lake as he walked despondently up the 18th. He looked at his caddie and said, “I’ve played so badly all day, I think I’m going to drown myself in that lake.” The caddie, quick as a flash, replied, “I’m not sure you could keep your head down that long.” Until next time, be safe and help someone if you can!• “T HE 23RD ANNUAL Bob White Charity Golf Tournament” sponsored by the Lutheran Church By The Lake, will be held on Monday, May 15, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. at Savannah Lakes Village’s Monticello Golf Course. The purpose of the golf tournament, besides having a great time, is to raise money to support and help our local charities. It will be a fun, 4-person Scramble, with teams made up of men, women, or both competing to win the prizes for First or Second place per flight with Low Gross and Low Net scores. The flights will be based upon handicaps. Individual players can also win prizes by hitting “Closest to the Line”, “Shooting within the Circle” (scored as a hole-in-one), and hitting “Closest to the Pin.” The golfer getting a natural Hole in One on #8 will be leaving with a really fantastic prize. No one goes home empty-handed as every participant will be given a nice goodie bag to enjoy. Players will also be able to buy Mulligans, raffle tickets for the 50-25-25 cash raffle, as well as tickets to win great prizes. A delicious catered meal of either chicken or pork and all the sides is included with the registration. Following the tournament, come join other players and guests at The Lutheran Church By The Lake – Ark Building, for the exciting announcement of the winners and to enjoy a great time socializing. Registration forms will be available at both SLV clubhouse locations. The cost per 4-person team is $300 ($75 per person.) Please contact Bill Kumle with questions or if you want to sponsor a hole, donate raffle prizes, or volunteer to help. Your participation will help to make this year’s tournament a huge success and will make a difference for our local charities!• MGA Hosted Valentine’s Day Mixed Team Event! by BOB EDWARDS MGA Vice President 2023 We’re Ready, Are You? Tammy Forehand Herron, guest speaker Paula Palaima, Regent and Beth Johnson, Long Cane member DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION SC in the Revolution by SHEILA WOLF Long Cane Chapter NSDAR HAVING LIVED IN South Carolina for some time, I now realize that I had an entirely northern bias regarding the Revolutionary War. My thoughts immediately went to Boston, Concord and Lexington, New York, New Jersey and the Green Mountain boys. Little did I know that more than 200 battles and skirmishes were fought in South Carolina. Several of the battles had decisive impacts on the tide of the war. The Discover South Carolina website says that there are ten Revolutionary War venues in South Carolina everyone should see: The Revolutionary War in SC: 10 Best Sites (discoversouthcarolina.com) Each is described briefly. One is our very own Ninety-Six Historic Site. If you have already visited these more well-known sites and would like to immerse yourself further, please see The Liberty Trail: The Liberty Trail | American Battlefield Trust (battlefields.org) The site has an interactive map. Simply click on the map and select a location. Each battle is briefly described, in context, and outcome. The Liberty Trail—developed through a partnership between the American Battlefield Trust and the South Carolina Battleground Trust—connects battlefields across South Carolina and tells the captivating and inspiring stories of this transformative chapter of American history. According to the website, the cornerstone of The Liberty Trail is the preservation of hallowed battlegrounds. Through this initiative, thousands of acres of land will be permanently protected. Today, most of these sites are blank slates — quiet fields and forests waiting to tell their stories. In 2026, we will celebrate the sestercentennial anniversary of the American Revolution. Celebrations are already being planned throughout the nation. Committees have been formed at federal, state and county levels. There has never been a better time to immerse yourself in our country’s history. How many sites can you visit by 2026? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone; eating and drinking; talking to people in your vehicle; fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system — anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving. Distracted Driving Awareness Month was introduced as a resolution by former U.S. Representative Betsy Markey and passed by the U.S. House of Representatives Long Cane Chapter (DAR) Welcomes Tammy Forehand Herron as Guest Speaker at February Meeting. by BARBARA BURLESON LONG CANE CHAPTER (DAR) Daughters of the American Revolution met on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at the McCormick County Library. WE DO IT ALL FOR YOU: BLINDS • SHADES • SHUTTERS • DRAPES • HOME AUTOMATION on March 23, 2010. The resolution was an outgrowth of the tragic story told by a mother who had lost her daughter to a distracted driver. On November 25, 2008, Shelly Fortney was driving back home from a doctor's visit. Upon arriving on her street, she found numerous emergency vehicles. She soon noticed that it was her nine year old daughter Erica that was lying on the street being attended to by paramedics. Soon, a woman she did not know, came up to her and indicated that she lived in the neighborhood and was sorry that she did not see her, referring to Shelly's daughter. Erica had been on her way home from school riding her bicycle in the bike lane and was just around the corner from her home. When, as the investigation would reveal, a young woman, a mom, who lived in the same neighborhood as the Forney's, was driving her SUV and talking on her cell phone. Without noticing, this mom drifted into the bike lane and hit Erica and her bicycle having never seen her. Erica was eventually taken to the nearest hospital and then air flighted to a hospital in Denver, Colorado. Two days later, on Thanksgiving day in 2008, this young nine year old child's life came to an end. A tragic end with life altering consequences for two families with children living in the same neighborhood. This became the catalyst for Shelly Forney becoming an advocate against distracted driving, telling her story of how her daughter's death was completely avoidable. As she tells her story she details how she had been guilty numerous times of driving and talking on her phone prior to this tragedy. And even as she drove home that day from her doctor, she had been talking on her cell phone. Suffice it to say, she stopped her distracted driving going forward. Unfortunately, similar stories are playing out across the country at an alarming rate. While many drivers recognize distracted driving is a problem, way too many continue to engage in this risky behavior. Everyone is responsible for control of the vehicle they are operating at all times. This month resolve to break any distracted driving habits. Driving requires undivided attention and focus on the road. Commit to being part of the solution and put an end to tragic stories like Erica Fortney's. Don't drive distracted.• SavannahShorelines.com • April 2023 • 15

ROD & GUN CLUB Rod and Gun Club Hosted St. Valentine’s Day Couples Shoot by JOE CRANE L EN AZZARANO HOSTED the St. Valentine’s Day Couples’ Shoot that was held Saturday 2/18/23 at 10am. Fifteen of our members were in attendance. The competition consisted of two 6 shot strings with a reload in between each. Targets were 3X5 inch cards. The cards looked big enough in the hand, but not so big 21 feet away, framing a pistol’s sights. Hits on the targets needed to be completely on the target in order to be counted, no edging. Adjacent to the cards were penalty targets, which, if hit would take a point off a shooter’s score. Shooters were required to fire two 6 shot sequences. The first round was limited to ten seconds. OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CLUB McCormick Garden Club Donates Bench to the McCormick Middle School from Recycled Plastic by PHYLLIS ROTH President McCormick Garden Club O N MARCH 8, the McCormick Garden Club donated a beautiful composite bench to the McCormick Middle School. The club provided this bench through a plastic recycling program that was launched in November 2022. Within the first three months, the program successfully collected and recycled over 500 pounds of plastic with the incredible support of the McCormick Middle School, the McCormick community, McCormick Food Lion and Trex, the provider of the bench. McCormick Middle School Principal, Dr. Koeppen and Ms. Holman and her class helped educate the students on the importance of recycling and its impact on our environment. The McCormick Garden Club plans to continue with the recycling program and anticipates donating benches to other parts of the McCormick community, while cleaning up the plastic around us. With each 500 pounds of plastic collected and recycled, the club will receive a bench. We look forward to the continued support of the residents of McCormick in turning our plastic waste into beautiful benches for us to enjoy. Janet Robinson Project Manager for this project McCormick Garden Club• McCORMICK GARDEN CLUB T WENTY-NINE MEMBERS OF the Outdoor Adventure Club, and nine of their four legged friends, gathered on Saturday, February 18, 2023, to hike the recently completed Monticello South Trail. The weather was perfect for hiking this beautiful trail through the woods in the Monticello section of SLV. We enjoyed the abundant sunshine and temperatures in the mid 50's. Equally enjoyable was the ability to meet with new people who share enjoyment of the outdoors! The trail is easily accessible from the Monticello Golf Course parking lot, and is well marked with round yellow reflectors and O N FEB 16, 2023, the first ever OAC archery event was held at Hickory Knob State Park. Fourteen archers participated in two sessions under the instruction of Matt from Hickory Knob. We started with some basic instructions and safety information before moving on to shooting arrows at targets from 10, 15 and 20 feet. We have some real Robin Hoods here at SLV!!! Everyone had a great time! The outing was such a great success that the OAC may possibly hold another archery event in the fall of 2023. At Christmas God’s Son came into the world. Jesus came to bring peace, forgiveness and hope. After His death on the cross, on Easter morning His tomb was empty. God’s unspoken message was, “Death has been conquered by God’s grace.” Jesus’ resurrection ties us to God’s love as Easter people and blesses us forever. Jesus’ disciples were the original Easter people who received the first Easter blessing. Also, as followers of Christ we have received the same Easter blessing. What is the Easter blessing? How can we share this Easter blessing? Blessings are a two-way street. They are both received and given. As we think about that first Easter morning, we realize that we can experience the same Easter blessing Jesus’ disciples discovered that morning. Imagine the roller coaster of emotions they experienced as they discovered that Jesus’ grave was empty. He was not there. His body was gone. His followers were transformed. They did not realize it, but on that first Easter morning Jesus transformed their fear into joy, confusion into excitement, weeping into happiness, loss into hope, heartaches into forgiveness, darkness into light, and death into life. Guess what? Jesus does the same thing for us. Jesus turns our fears, confusion, weeping, hopelessness, heartache, darkness and death into joy, excitement, happiness, hope, forgiveness, light and life. Chances are all of us have experienced a time of confusion or uncertainty in our lives. Through Jesus, God meets us and draws us into His arms of grace. That is the joy of Easter morning…Jesus making us right with God. This blessing is freely given to us. God‘s love meets us where we are, but He doesn’t leave us there. He wants us to grow, develop, and thrive as one of his disciples. He challenges us to take this Easter blessing and share it with the people we encounter. We become God’s hands and feet moving through the neighborhood, reaching out to the world, sharing the good news with our family, neighbors, and community. He challenges us to be the Easter blessing, sharing the good news of Christ alive in our world, but more importantly in our lives. Through Jesus’ resurrection, we realize that we are loved unconditionally. We are forgiven, made new, washed clean. The things that pull us down are gone. This is the Easter blessing. This blessing allows us to share our abundant and new life with those around us. The early followers of Jesus did not realize the Easter blessing until Christ came and stood among them in the upper room. He said, “Peace to you!” Then He showed them the wounds —they were overjoyed to see the Lord! Jesus repeated His greeting, “Peace to you!” And He told them, “Just as the Father has sent me, I’m now sending you.” On Easter morning you will receive the Easter blessing. Then, GO and BE the Easter blessing. God is sending you!!• 24 • April 2023•SavannahShorelines.com

ALWAYS READY FOR FUN! My name is Kiera and I am somewhat of a “party pooch.” I love meeting new people, playing with other dogs, brisk walks and car rides to nowhere in particular. I am happy to keep the squirrels out of your garden, but my unbridled enthusiasm might carry over to your favorite feline so best to be a cat free home. I hear there is currently a contest to guess what kind of pup I am. Catahoula, Plott Hound and Shepherd seem to be getting the most votes, mixed in with a dollop of “something small.” I would say that I am 40 pounds of a little of this and a little of that wrapped up in a colorful and pretty package. I must also mention that I am very loving and prone to public displays of affection and hope you are too. My birthday is 8/17/20 and I have already been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. My high energy level (I LOVE TO PLAY!) makes a fenced in yard a “must have”, but please don’t tempt me with one of those chain-linked types. I’ve never met one that I can’t climb! The only thing left on my “to do” list is to find a loving home where I am always welcome inside as part of the family. ONE FRIENDLY PUP! My name is Opal and I’m named for a gemstone long associated with purity, love, goodness and nurturing. Who am I to argue? I’m still a young pooch with a birth date of 1/12/2022 so I’m still chock full of “puppyness.” I am quite friendly and I love to say hi to new humans and hopefully get a pet or two. If you’re game, I would love to crawl onto your lap and snuggle. My motto is “you can’t get enough lovin’.” I get along with other dogs and…wait for it…cats! So if you already have a fur ball at home, I will fit right in – no drama. I am a quick study and enjoy treats. If you combine learning new tricks with treats, even better! Right now I am in a lovely foster home and am crate trained. I am a compact 40 pounds and we can play “guess my breed” because I have no clue. Probably a mix of your smart, friendly and loving type of dogs with lots of brown swirled in. I am up to date with my shots, spayed and microchipped. All that’s left is finding a wonderful indoor home with someone to love!• Opal PETS OF THE MONTH Please leave a message at 864-391-2349 or email us at [email protected] if you are interested in learning more about our available dogs and cats.
