Eclipse Party at Monticello Golf Club by BARBARA ARMSTRONG S AVANNAH LAKES VILLAGE residents gathered at the Monticello Golf Club on April 8 at 2:00 pm for a Solar Eclipse Party. Everyone was wearing special glasses, and one attendee even made his own special viewer out of a Cheerios box with instructions from YouTube. STREET SAFETY Defensive Driving Tips by JOHN COMPSTON L AST MONTH, DEFENSIVE driving was discussed, but with a twist. Tips were offered related to one's vehicle, however, before the ignition was turned on and the vehicle placed in gear. Remember defensive driving is having the right attitude and strategies that focus on preparing for and anticipating potential problems that can reduce the risk of having an accident. So, what constitutes a defensive driver. A key component is the defensive driver pays attention to the road at all times. Thus, allowing themselves the opportunity to continually assess their surroundings for any potential hazards or risks. And they are always looking beyond the vehicle(s) in front or behind them, and to their sides scanning for potential problems. The defensive driver keenly pays attention to what is happening on the outside of their vehicle and not what is occurring on the inside. They have zero tolerance for distractions. The cell phone is put away as are other electronic gadgets. Daydreaming, zoning out or being excessively tired are outlawed as is eating, combing hair and other personal hygiene issues. A defensive driver does not become distracted by the police having someone pulled over other than to give them sufficient room, or distracted by an accident scene. As they continually scan their surroundings, they are cognizant of other drivers who themselves may be distracted. They have the ability to spot a hazard or risk and predict what could occur if no action is taken on their part. For instance, the vehicle in front is weaving from side to side, or maybe there are several vehicles pulled off to the side of the roadway or a vehicle is carrying loose cargo that does not appear to be secured. These and others are good examples of where the defensive driver is able to sense when there is a risk and takes actions to safely separate themselves from the risk. Never leaving themselves in harm's way. Consider where a defensive driver drives on the road. They want to drive in the center of their lane. If possible, they want to have no vehicles to either side of them so they can change lanes quickly in an emergency. They also try to stay out of the blind spot of other vehicles because unfortunately, there are those drivers who never check their blind spot when changing lanes. When defensive drivers are traveling on a highway with two lanes in their direction they stay in the right lane as the left lane should only be used for passing. If there are three or more lanes in their direction, they know that the furthest right lane is for vehicles entering or exiting the highway. So, they will utilize the middle lane(s) except when using the furthest left lane to pass other vehicles. There are many more attributes of a defensive driver. When driving, stay focused and prepared to take action to avoid potential risks. Stay safe Savannah Lakes Village! 8 • June 2024•SavannahShorelines.com

Thank you! Savannah River Singers A SPECIAL "THANK YOU!" to the Savannah River Singers for their generous contribution to the McCormick School District. A gift of $2,000 will support the developing needs of the Band and Chorus program. Harry Hafer, representative for the group, attended the recent Spring Band Concert. This concert was the first student performance since the pandemic. The students, under the leadership of Ms. Talley-Bowen provided a wonderful experience for all. Dr. Hembree, Ms. Pamela Turman, and Heather McNally on behalf of the MACK represent the partnership shared to support the arts and local students. World Class Experiences - ArtFields 2024 THE McCORMICK COUNTY School District and the MACK provided World Class Experiences to 29 unique students and 3 art instructors. Students enjoyed an arts and cultural visit to Lake City, SC to participate in ArtFields and honor artists of the Southeast. This community transforms into a “living art gallery” to recognize, celebrate, and share the artistic talent of the Southeast with over 400 works of art on display in locally-owned venues including the ArtFields Jr. program. Thank you to our MACK membership, team members, and partners to ensure a successful cultural experience for our local students! PROGRAM DETAILS The attending McCormick High School students were wonderful attendees. All participated throughout the day and were respectful, pleasant, and engaged on the bus and throughout the Lake City community. We had engaging conversations about culture, and art and reflected on how to ensure access to world-class experiences in rural communities. While we stayed together for the guided walking tour, all students were provided a map to help navigate the various arts venues which were separated into five districts, easily color-coded with sidewalk stickers and dots on the map. Each student was encouraged to find examples of elements of art throughout the day and to consider submitting student art for future ArtFields Jr. competitions. Students were encouraged to participate in the People’s Choice Awards and selected their favorite artwork from the various sections. Many were able to download the free Bloomberg Connects app, which helps to "explore expert-curated content and guides to over 400 museums, galleries, sculpture parks, gardens, and cultural spaces". Thank you to Ms. Cantrell and Ms. Talley-Bowen for helping to see this opportunity come together. 12 • June 2024•SavannahShorelines.com

McCORMICK GARDEN CLUB The perfect backdrop for a celebration can be a rainy Saturday morning in May---given the right circumstances. Mostly, the event must be indoors with individuals prepared to celebrate for a good reason---and that’s exactly what happened. On May 4, 2024, the McCormick Garden Club (MGC) honored its 75th anniversary at the ARK in The Lutheran Church by the Lake. Table centerpieces of red roses designed by club members with displays of memorabilia added to the festive mood. All rainy-day thoughts disappeared, however, with the eagerness of members, past and present, to gather and reminisce those times of work and fun that made 75 years of the MGC’s existence possible. The day’s program began with Phyllis Roth, MGC president, welcoming all and leading the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the invocation, given by Pastor Greg Van Dyke, from the Lutheran Church by the Lake, where he referred to all attendees as stewards of God’s creation. President Phyllis Roth then introduced past presidents of the MGC, dignitaries from the Garden Club of SC and special guests. Exceptional thank-yous were extended to Toni Chandler and Melly Meyer, the event’s co-chairmen, for their guidance and diligence. David E. Stoudenmire, Jr., president of Garden Club of South Carolina, offered his greeting to MGC members by praising the club’s 75-year success, especially now as South Carolina grows and heightened interest in new garden clubs thrives. Dorothy Closs, the director of the West Piedmont District of the Garden Clubs of SC, complimented MGC’s dedication and announced two state awards for this club: second place for celebration of National Garden Club Week and first place for Conservation of Natural Resources. To follow up her presentation, Phyllis Roth recognized Bev Malenka and Paula Palaima for their leadership of the Spring Garden Tour, a major part of the National Garden Club Week celebration, and Janet Robinson, who began the Trex plastics recycling, the project which won the Conservation of Natural Resources award. McCormick’s Mayor Roy Smith presented and read a proclamation honoring the McCormick Garden Club on its 75th anniversary. A letter from Kirk Smith, chief operating officer of SLV, thanked the MGC for the garden bench given to Tara Clubhouse and the contributions of this club to the community. A history of the McCormick Garden Club presented by Toni Chandler preceded the singing of the club’s song “My Wild Irish Rose” by all members and guests. Pastor Van Dyke returned thanks for the lunch prepared by Main Street Coffee and served by club members. The event’s sweet finale was the cutting and sharing of an exquisite anniversary cake decorated with roses and the garden club emblem, designed and baked by John Yerdon. What a celebration…yet someone might ask why. Throughout the affair, visual images of bygone garden parties, meticulous minutes of meetings, and ladies, from long ago and from recent months, planting to beautify, loomed above the audience on PowerPoint. As Toni Chandler delivered her history of the MGC, the members and guests listened to practices from a simpler yet, in some ways, more difficult time. Her words followed many praises on the triumphs of today’s club from a variety of speakers. What a touching and nostalgic reminder it was to all present that today’s success began long ago---75 years ago to be exact! She concluded by mentioning a future project: supporting the Ascending Bird Sanctuary in Plum Branch. The McCormick Garden Club’s theme for their 75th anniversary celebration, “Honor Our Heritage – Forging Our Future,” was plainly there. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN a golf enthusiast meets up with a picture-perfect day, 18 holes of challenge and an equally enthused McCormick County Republican Party? Answer: A day to remember. And that day took place on Saturday, April 27th at Hickory Knob State Park Golf Course when dozens of fun seekers signed up and became a part of the MCRP'S Second Annual Golf Tournament. The eighteen-hole course was recently upgraded with a $1.5 million grant from the state, so the fairways, greens and lake views were all lovely. The opening ceremony, observed by nearly 100 spectators encircling the pro shop flagpole, began with Barbara McGuigan leading everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. The national anthem was sung by the talented Ceci Dittmar who also gave the closing prayer. The shotgun start went off as scheduled at 11:00 am sharp. Throughout the day spectators, while waiting for the teams to return, were able to take part in some special events, including a continental breakfast, a hotdog lunch and two UNBELIEVABLE auctions. Johnna Joly has no equal when it comes to obtaining, organizing, and displaying items for the Chinese and silent auctions. Every item, every basket was "over the top" in value (ie: a fully loaded collection of "everything" pickle ball to local artists paintings, jewelry, and origami) and each one was beautifully packaged. Likely, there were some blessed spouses and partners who were happily surprised when their golfer returned home Saturday night. At the end of the day, as with all tournaments, there were winners. The top teams were: (Flight 1) Suzanne Gabriel, Jason Gabriel, Atley Gabriel, Bill Shipley. (Flight 2) Joe Lovejoy, Larry Lagree, John McGuigan, Randy Woodard. Longest Drive: Clarke Stearns and Debbie Popejoy. Closest to the Pin: Suzanne Gabriel and Tim Schlehuber. The support from our generous community businesses and individuals to sponsor this event was overwhelming and very much appreciated. We are grateful to those members who gave so much of their time and talent to make the golf tournament a truly successful and fun day, including but not limited to Barbara McGuigan—Golf Chair, who was the tournament's inspiration and motivator; Wendy Kvale, an amazing planning guru; Marge Elmore who does it all but primarily keeps the team moving forward; the aforementioned Johnna Joly; and Lenee Lovejoy, the remarkable Chair of MCRP. Also, kudos to our generous caterers, John & Beth McCullough at Liberty Hill Concessions for the great BBQ dinner served after the tournament. AND ONE FINAL NOTE: People are always curious as to where their donations go and what happens to funds raised by our events such as the golf tournament. In this important election year, we will be supporting our local candidates and their campaigns, which is the heart of our mission to "Elect leaders who embody conservative principles that are key to creating success, prosperity, and a culture of unity in McCormick County." by KEN SHOOLTZ T HE MEN’S GOLF Association (MGA) kicked off the 2024 season with their annual breakfast on February 29th with 165 members in attendance. The newly elected MGA board members were announced. Additionally, the Board presented the revised MGA Charter to the membership and it was unanimously approved by all attendees. This year we are excited to introduce our new points system for the 2024 season. This is to determine the MGA champions for each flight, and the overall MGA Champion. Points are awarded for the top 10 finishes each week (5 pts for 1st,4 for 2nd, culminating at 1 pt. for 5th thru 10th in each flight). The flights are determined by the tee chosen at the start of the year by each golfer. The points will accumulate through the year, closing with the MGA Championship on October 24th. Selected events, such as the Member/Member, will award double points. On April 28th the MGA held their Black Tee Scramble at the Monticello Golf Club. There were 24 mixed teams drawn from the participants via Golf Genius using an ABCD handicap setup. The format was a step aside scramble. TENNIS / PICKLEBALL COMMITTEE USTA TEAMS ARE ALIVE AND WELL IN SLV by MARSHA LUSBY T HE UNITED STATES Tennis Association (USTA) provides local league tennis team play under the Greenwood Area Tennis Association (GATA) umbrella. SLV participates in these leagues and has done well over the last decade. Many of our teams have advanced to South Carolina and Georgia State Championships, as well as advancing to Southern Sectionals and ultimately in 2013, advanced to the USTA National Championships in Surprise, Arizona. SLV had 3 women’s teams competing in the South Carolina local leagues. Those 3 teams won the GATA local leagues and are the 3.5 Women 55+, captained by Ann Fago, 3.5 Women 70+, captained by Fran Castle and Kathie Kase, 3.0 Women 70+ captained by Heidi Martin. Two of these three teams advanced to the 2024 SC State Championships in Hilton Head in May. We wish them well on their journey to yet another State Championship for SLV. SLV SAYS FAREWELL TO ANOTHER LONG-TIME TENNIS RESIDENTS by MARSHA LUSBY HEIDI AND RON Martin are moving on to new adventures in Cape Canaveral after being at SLV for over 19 years. They bought a house in 2004 and have been residents since then. Both have been very active in the Community and helped to increase participation in many of the programs. Heidi spent her early years playing golf with the WGA, Team Play, State Tournaments, and as President of the WGA. Both Heidi and Ron participated in and won many golf tournaments, including the Couples Mixed Groups composed of teams around the CSRA. In 2014 Heidi turned her attention to Tennis and never looked back. She is an avid tennis player and has captained USTA Ladies 3.0, 6.0 Mixed Teams, and some 6.5 Ladies Combo teams since 2015 as well as keeping the ladies active during the pandemic. Most, if not all, of Heidi’s teams have advanced to State Championships and beyond. Heidi has single-handedly formed USTA teams, as well as running many Standing Reservation Groups and fun groups. Heidi’s expertise at forming winning teams will be missed by our tennis program. Heidi also served our community as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee for 3 years and a member of the SLV Board of Directors from 2015-2018. She was instrumental in getting the bowling alleys updated during this time and is thrilled to see the current improvements at the Bowling Alleys and the Recreation Center. Ron was also very active as he served on the Golf Committee, was Tournament Co-Chair of the Men’s Member Guest for 2 years, was Tournament Chair for the SLV Couples Golf Tournaments and ran Fore Fun for numerous years. April was busy and exciting month for Pickleball at SLV by JOE LOCKE Founder and President, SLV Blazing Paddles Pickleball Club Now that the warmer weather is here the Pickleball action at SLV is really heating up. April was our busiest month to date and the Pickle People are having a great time. From another successful Jumpstart Class, to men’s and women’s doubles tournaments, to a Disc Golf Outing, to an Interclub event vs Augusta, to winning medals at local Tournaments, there was something for everyone. And, we are just getting started, as 2024 will be packed with lots of fun, social, and competitive events. We even added an exciting new twist to our games – swatting the Cicadas. Who knew? Pickleball Jumpstart Class III was another great Success On a warm and sunny Wednesday afternoon, April 10th, the Blazing Paddles Pickleball Club conducted our 3rd Pickleball Jumpstart class for new and beginning players. 24 players and 12 inhouse instructors were involved in the informative 2-hour session. The Jumpstart class covered the basics of the sport, including safety tips, and was intended for folks that have never played, or have limited experience. The goal is to give new players a running start before they begin playing regularly. Everyone had a great time, and the improvement from the beginning of the class to the end was obvious. A big shout out to all the players, instructors, and helpers for making the session such a huge success. Note: The Blazing Paddles Pickleball Club fully supports and appreciates the SLV Beginner program on Thursday mornings. Curtiss Wakefield, Geri Huminski, and others do a wonderful job with that group, and I encourage all beginners to utilize that great program. Pickleball Club sponsors 2nd wicked fun Disc Golf Outing On Friday, April 12th, the Blazing Paddles Pickleball Club held our 2nd Disc Golf outing at the beautiful Little River Disc Golf Course in McCormick. After playing we had an awesome lunch at the course Pavilion. A big thanks to Bill for his excellent instruction, to John Maggiore for his cooking skills, and to our wonderful Events team for making this such a great event. OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CLUB Second Annual OAC Archery Event at Hickory Knob State Park a Hit with New Targets and Tutorials by ROSE TRACY THE OAC HELD our second annual archery event at Hickory Knob State Park on February 27 with 16 total archers participating in two sessions. Park ranger Matt gave everyone a brief tutorial on how to shoot, so even first timers were able to get in on the action. Matt also provided us with animal targets this year. There was a coyote, a turkey, a boar and a deer. These new targets made the shooting much more interesting! Each archer was able to shoot from 3 distances. We have some really good shooters in the OAC!! It was a lovely day to be outside at the beautiful HK state park enjoying the early spring weather, hearing the birds sing and making new friends while we learned about archery. Many thanks to park ranger Matt for all your help with this event! OAC Explores Georgia State Botanical Gardens: Tulips, Trails, and Porcelain Treasures by ROSE TRACY ON MARCH 15, twenty five members of the Outdoor Adventure Club visited the Georgia State Botanical Gardens in Athens, GA. We had to dodge a few sprinkles of rain while we looked at the flowers, but it was well worth it. The colorful tulips were in full bloom and were beautiful. There were plenty of daffodils and various trees blooming also. The gardens are a 313-acre preserve with numerous nature trails and has been designated an important birding area by the Georgia Audubon Society. There are many themed gardens that provide beauty, serenity and inspiration. The gardens are open year round and there is no charge to visit. We also visited the porcelain museum, which is located inside the gardens. The porcelain collection in the museum was donated by Deen Day Sanders, the widow of Cecil B. Day, who founded the Days Inn Corporation. The porcelain pieces on display highlight works inspired by nature, particularly flowers, butterflies and birds. Other collections on display feature coffee, tea and chocolate sets and beautiful porcelains created to serve hot beverages. Our visit concluded with a picnic lunch inside the Tropical Conservatory, which is home to a variety of tropical plants, including orchids and, of course, a visit to the gift shop. 26 • June 2024•SavannahShorelines.com

Outdoor Adventure Club Kayaks at Baker Creek by LINDA McCLINTOCK & GLORIA BRAMBLE ON THURSDAY, MARCH 21, ten kayakers and one standup paddleboarder, members of the Outdoor Adventure Club, set out in kayaks to paddle up Baker Creek hoping to experience the crappie spawning frenzy. Unfortunately, the crappie had somehow heard about our plans and decided they didn’t need a bunch of boat floating witnesses. We prefer to think that the cooler water temperatures deterred them! The Day was perfect for kayaking and we had a great paddle. Thanks to the high water levels, we were able to go much further down the creek than is normally possible. Of course, the creek does get rather narrow, so single file was necessary. There were a lot of twists, turns and branches to avoid. Then there was the tree that had fallen across the creek. All ten of us kayakers knew we’d be able to duck under, but what about Michael Shoemaker, our Stand Up Paddleboarder??? We hung back to see what he’d do. Perhaps he’d gather great speed approaching the tree, then leap over, maybe even doing a flip in the air, and land with perfect balance on the paddleboard on the other side. I’m fairly certain Michael could have done all this, but he chose instead to demonstrate really good balance as he ducked under the tree and then resumed his stand up position. We were impressed! Despite the fact that we were snubbed by the crappie, we did see herons and ospreys in their nests. We enjoyed the day so much we are planning to go on another paddle to explore a different area of our beautiful lake very soon. How about joining us? You never know what you’ll see! OAC Tours John de la Howe Governor's School: Exploring History, Student Life, and Unique Educational Pathways by ROSE TRACY ON THE AFTERNOON of March 27, 2024 twenty eight lucky members of the OAC were treated to a tour of the John de la Howe Governor's School for Agriculture. The school sits on 1310 acres, so there is a lot to see! Our tour began at the historic dairy barn where the school has established a museum that contains antique farm implements and items that would have been found in a farm house in the 1930s. We also saw some cute baby goats at this location. We then loaded onto buses for a tour of the campus. While we were riding we heard about the history of the property and how a Governor's School was established in 2019. John de la Howe is a high school for honor students who live in South Carolina. Students live at the school during the week and go home on weekends. A residential building was open for us to view. It was nicely furnished and very clean. A couple of students told us they are each assigned daily chores to keep the space neat and clean. They are also responsible for taking care of the animals that live on campus - horses, cows, goats, pigs, etc. Our next stop on the tour was the library, where we were served a delicious snack. We heard from several students about projects they are involved with such as laser printing, horticulture and raising animals. We also heard about their plans for college. John de la Howe offers 3 educational pathways - Plant & Animal Science, Horticulture, and Environmental & Natural Resource Management. These classes are in addition to general education classes. Mr. Gregory Thompson, the school principal, stopped by to talk to us and answer questions. He advised the OAC members of how they can support the school both financially and by volunteering. Then we loaded back onto the buses to travel over to the tomb of John de la Howe. Students from the hiking club joined us there and we took a short hike to the original Howe homesite. While we hiked together, we had the opportunity to visit with the students and learn more about their life at the Governor's school and how they came to be enrolled there. It was very clear that the students love their school. The OAC would like to thank Stacie Smith and Jenifer Brown from John de la Howe for setting up this tour and for all their hospitality and information. We would also like to thank all the students who took time out of their busy schedules to spend time with us. It was a pleasure getting to know all of you!! We are blessed to have this wonderful educational facility in McCormick County. Due to the high level of interest in this tour by OAC members, we are working with the school staff to set up a date for a second tour. Watch your email and Neighbor Link for an announcement. OAC Enjoys Perfect Day Hiking Savannah Valley Rail Trail, Thanks to Clear Skies and Easter Spirit by SUSAN BALLANTYNE THE OAC HIKED the Savannah Valley Rail Trail on Saturday, March 30, 2024. The original date of this hike was planned for the previous Saturday, but rain postponed the event. Thirty-one members were rewarded with a perfect hiking day; temperatures in high 60s-low 70s, and sunny skies. Three canine members rounded out the group. Since it was the day before Easter Sunday, Jim Snyder suggested that the members hop down the trail to get into the holiday spirit..... The hike began at the trailhead across from the Willington Bookstore. The trail is mostly flat, and covered in pinestraw. There is a detour off of the trail onto a paved road in a residential area, but it returns to the wooded trail after a short distance. There are placards along the route noting interesting facts about the trail. Several concrete whistle posts are still intact along the trail. These reminded train engineers of the type and duration of signals to use when approaching stops and crossings. It was also noted that the trees in the area of this trail are all less than 140 years old. It was indicated that prior to this period of time, and the construction of the railroad, the land was utilized for cotton farming. Members had the option of completing the almost 8 mile hike, or choosing a shorter duration. The half way point was the Route 7 trailhead, after crossing the trestle, which is visible from Route 7, adorned by the American flag. After a short break at the Route 7 trailhead, we returned on the same trail back to the Willington Bookstore. Special thanks to Misty Oxford for opening the bookstore early on that day so that OAC members could browse and shop prior to, and after, the hike. Still many more adventures ahead this year with the OAC. If you are not yet a member, and are interested in learning more about the activities offered, please e-mail to [email protected]. 28 • June 2024•SavannahShorelines.com

SLV OAC Adventurous Paddlers Circumnavigate German Island on the Savannah River by MICHAEL O. SHOEMAKER SLV OAC VP ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON April 19th, the Savannah Lakes Village (SLV) Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC) enjoyed a beautiful scenic paddle around German Island, on the Savannah River. Departing from Riverside Park on Betty's Branch in Evans GA, the adventurous group of 19 kayakers and 1 Stand-Up Paddleboarder (SUP) paddled approximately 6 miles upstream on the Little River and down the Savannah River before returning to the boat ramp on Betty's Branch. The weather and river conditions were excellent despite threatening showers earlier in the morning. Many large tame southern painted turtles were seen sunning on trees along the Little River. All participants successfully finished the paddle and no one tested the water. by ROSE TRACY THE OUTDOOR ADVENTURE Club celebrated the arrival of Spring and also the 10th anniversary of the club with a Social at the Rec Center pavilion on April 27, 2024. About 80 OAC members participated in a spirited corn hole tournament and enjoyed other games such as bocce, horseshoes and ping pong. After 4 tough rounds, the team of Carol Pfeiffer and Gary Watson persevered to win the corn hole tournament and were presented with their gold medals and "corny" prize. There was also a cookie contest which was won by Barbara Farr. She was presented with the Silver Spatula award. Members also enjoyed a memory table which contained pictures, Shorelines articles, T shirts and other memorabilia from the club's 10 year history. Three original members, Linda McClintock, Judy Lorier and Nancy McGhie, were given the honor of cutting the cake which was decorated with the OAC logo. The Social was the perfect start to a summer that will be filled with many fun outdoor adventures for the club. You can join the OAC by sending an email to [email protected] that contains your name, address, phone number and T shirt size and payment method (check, credit card or member charge). ROD & GUN CLUB On the range… ON APRIL 13, the Rod & Gun Club held an Arcade Shoot. This is always a fun shoot because participants get to shoot at 2" moving targets—just like being at a carnival! The Club recently acquired two arcade-style machines which provide small circular targets that move along the length of the machine. If a target is hit, it drops down so shooters get immediate feedback as to whether they were successful or not. The targets are on a continuous loop and when they come back around they pop up and shooters can try again. Part of the challenge was using .22 rifles to shoot the targets, which were set up 25 yards down range. Each shooter had a chance to shoot 10 shots. While this was intended to be a fun experience, several shooters kept score and a “winner” was determined. Congratulations to Dwaine Wright who got to take home the lovely standing shotgun/toilet paper trophy! It was happily passed on to him by last year’s winner, Mike Blouin. On the lake… ON APRIL 24, three of the Rod & Gun Club members headed out on a charter that had been coordinated by Pat Dundon and led by Charter Captain, Eddie Mason. Eddie has lead successful charters before, and this day was no different. The men caught their limit of 30 stripers and hybrids. As you can see from the picture, that is a lot of fish! In addition, Doug Grimes is pictured showing off his 30” striper catch--which puts him currently in the lead for the largest striper of the year. We’ll have to wait and see if anyone can catch one larger. Rod & Gun Club April Adventures by JANET BLOUIN 30 • June 2024•SavannahShorelines.com

DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION CAPTAIN MOLLY by GAY FORNEY Long Cane Chapter NSDAR JUNE 12 MARKS Women’s Military Veterans Day, when we remember and honor the women who served in our military. On June 12, 1948, President Truman signed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, allowing women to serve as regular members of the military. However, women have served in the military since the revolution, working, cooking, providing, tending, and caring, including the very first woman who participated in combat, Margaret Cochran Corbin. Margaret Cochran Corbin married her husband, John Corbin, at the age of twenty-one. Instead of staying at home like many other women during the American Revolution, Margaret followed her husband and became a Continental Army camp follower, cooking, doing laundry for the soldiers, and tending to the sick and wounded. At the Battle of Fort Washington in 1776, Margaret dressed as a man and joined her husband on the battlefield, carrying water, tending to the wounded, and helping him load the cannon. When he was killed, she quickly took over, firing the cannon against the British. Her aim was so good, the Hessians stopped their advance to stop her. This act earned her the nickname “Captain Molly” due to her precision and aim in the midst of battle. Her cannon was the last to stop firing as the battle was abandoned. Margaret was wounded in the battle, hit by bullets from the enemy. She likely permanently lost the use of her left arm. She was taken as a prisoner of war by the British when they won the battle and was returned to Revolutionary hospitals for treatment. She struggled to support herself financially. After recovering from her battle wounds, she joined the Corps of Invalids at West Point, where wounded soldiers could perform light duties to support the military. There, she married a fellow wounded soldier, but he died just a year later. She was formally discharged in May of 1783. On July 6, 1779, the Continental Congress recognized her bravery and service by awarding her a lifelong pension, though it was half the amount of male soldiers. They also provided her with a new wardrobe of clothes after hers were ruined in the conflict. Margaret Cochran Corbin is remembered as the first female to serve in combat and the first woman to receive a pension for her military service. “Margaret Cochran Corbin is remembered as the first female to serve in combat and the first woman to receive a pension for her military service." THE RECENT FOCUS on the U.S. "loneliness epidemic," where approximately half of American adults feel profound isolation, brings to light the essential role of deep, meaningful friendships. This sense of disconnection is not just a social issue but a health crisis, akin to the impacts of daily smoking. Aristotle described a friend as "a single soul dwelling in two bodies," highlighting the life-enhancing value of true friendships. This is echoed in the teachings of Jesus, who defined the highest form of love as laying down one’s life for one’s friends: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:13-15) C.S. Lewis insightfully remarked that friendship begins when someone realizes they share a common experience or feeling with another, helping to break the chains of loneliness. Here in our communities of Savannah Lakes, McCormick County, and Lincolnton, GA, friendship is more than just a social nicety; it is a lifeline. It is about caring deeply, listening intently, and responding compassionately. As members of the Lutheran Church By The Lake, we constantly strive to nurture these connections. By participating in or leading small groups, attending social events, or joining service projects, we facilitate environments where authentic friendships can flourish. Likewise, friendships nurtured on a golf course or a fishing boat, are life giving. Proverbs reminds us that "a friend loves at all times." This requires us to be intentional, vulnerable, and committed in our relationships. Building and maintaining genuine friendships in our digital era remains a formidable but vital task. To cultivate such friendships, we need to be present. This means more than just physical presence; it involves being mentally and emotionally engaged with others, sharing our journeys, and opening our lives to mutual respect and commitment. As we face the widespread challenge of loneliness, let us remember that friendship offers a powerful remedy. It serves as a balm for the weary soul and a beacon of hope. Extending the hand of friendship not only alleviates our own solitude but also allows us to manifest God’s love and companionship to others. By cherishing and nurturing our friendships, we reflect the divine love of Christ and affirm that no challenge is too great when faced together. Let’s treasure these connections—they are, indeed, heaven sent. In Christ, PASTOR GREG Lutheran Church By The Lake 32 • June 2024•SavannahShorelines.com

“LET’S CUDDLE!” My name is Gizzy and I am a 50-pound cuddle bug. The betting pool has me pegged as a terrier/boxer mix, but if you want to cash in on that you’ll have to spring for a doggie DNA test. One thing that IS a sure bet is that you may feel free to give me lots of belly rubs and snuggles. You may also count on me to enjoy a tasty treat or two – or three! I enjoy going on walks and stopping to smell the roses- and that half eaten subway sandwich – and that dirty sock! Life is short – smell it all! I feel pretty relaxed around most other pups but if we are to be roomies, I might need a bit more time to get acquainted. I’m sure it will be clear sailing after we do! My birthday is 4/24/2018. I am a handsome boy with striking hazel eyes, have been neutered, vaccinated and even microchipped. The only thing left on my “to do” list is to find a loving home with a comfy bed indoors to call my own. "PUCKER UP!' My name is Rosalie and I simply adore kissing! What better way to show my appreciation than planting a big wet one on the object of my affection? I will also say that this tail never lies – if its busy wagging, I’m happy to see you!I love to make new friends, especially ones that will join me in a nice walk or maybe a ride on a golf cart. While on a doggie day out, I proved that I can be a good house guest – no begging at the dinner table from me, no sir! I enjoy playing with toys and tennis balls but would prefer to be your one and only pooch. They tell me I am probably a Boxer mix and I weigh about 50 pounds. My birth date is 10/26/19. I am spayed, microchipped, and up to date on my vaccinations. I would love to be your family dog and spend my days making you happy!
