Santa Stroll for Hospice ON DECEMBER 3, 2022 the annual
Santa Stroll was held to raise money for
by GLORIA BRAMBLE Greenwood’s Hospice & Palliative Care
of the Piedmont. Once again, a group
of SLV’ers pledged to complete a 3 mile
or 1 mile Santa Stroll, asking others for
donations to support them in their effort.
The SLV contingent was part of a larger
troop of strollers from the Greenwood area.
The SLV group was 29 strong . . . 30 counting the pooch that
went along. Not rain, sleet, or snow would deter them from the
stroll. This year they didn’t have the snow or sleet (this is South
Carolina), but they did have some rain. Did that stop them? No!
The fearless group of villagers donned Santa hats, Santa shirts,
reindeer antlers, and flashing Christmas bulb necklaces, and raised
a few umbrellas to stroll cheerfully around a beautiful Greenwood
neighborhood. They were greeted by many of the local residents
with waves and smiles.
This year the SLV Santa Strollers raised a total of $1,836 for
Greenwood’s Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont. The
Outdoor Adventure Club, which supports this event, would like to
thank all those who came out to stroll and all those who donated to
the cause. SLV is truly a wonderful place filled with
generous people.•

Library Brings NY Times
BestsellinTgo AMuctChoorrm, Bicrakd Taylor,HE OLD ADAGE “write what you know” holds especially
true for bestselling author Brad Taylor, who has penned sixteen
military thrillers about Pike Logan, a covert operator who works
to stop some of the greatest threats to global safety.
Brad Taylor was born on Okinawa, Japan, but grew up on
40-acres in rural Texas. Graduating from the University of
Texas, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S.
T Army Infantry. Brad served for more than 21 years, retiring as
a Special Forces Lieutenant Colonel. During that time, he held
numerous Infantry and Special Forces positions, including eight
years in 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment – Delta, commonly known as
Delta Force. He has conducted operations in support of US national interests in Iraq,
Afghanistan, and other classified locations.
His final assignment was as the Assistant Professor of Military Science at The
Citadel in Charleston, SC. He holds a Master’s of Science in Defense Analysis from
the Naval Postgraduate School, with a concentration in Irregular Warfare. In 2011,
Brad published his debut novel, One Rough Man, which was an immediate success and
launched the Pike Logan series. When not writing, he serves as a security consultant
on asymmetric threats for various agencies.
To celebrate the release of his 17th novel, The Devil’s Ransom, Brad Taylor is
stopping by McCormick to discuss his new book. The free event will be held at the
Lutheran Church by the Lake on Thursday, January 26th. Doors will open at 5:15
pm for heavy hors d'oeuvres and refreshments. The presentation starts at 6 pm and a
book signing will follow. A number of complimentary copies of his new book will be available.
The McCormick County Library is responsible for this event. “We have set our sights on attracting major authors to McCormick to share
their work,” said library director Paul Brown. In recent years the library has hosted many authors such as successful farmer and business
woman Sarah Frey as well as Cassandra King Conroy, bestselling Southern novelist and spouse of the late Pat Conroy. “Some of our events
have outgrown the library meeting room, so we are happily taking advantage of larger venues in the community”, said Brown.
State grants and support from the local Friends of the Library make many library programs possible. The Friends is a non-profit
organization supporting the library through donations and by operating the all-volunteer bookstore in downtown McCormick, Book On
Main. They are the recipients of the 2022 Outstanding Friends Group in S.C. Award.
About THE DEVIL’S RANSOM
• Conducting a routine cover development trip to Tajikistan, Pike and Jennifer
learn that Afghanistan has fallen, and a man that has done more for the United
States in Afghanistan than anyone else is in danger and on the run. They must
extract him before it’s too late.
• During the extraction, Pike collides headlong into a broader mystery: His covert
company, along with every other entity in the Taskforce, has been hit with a
ransomware attack, and it looks like the Taliban is behind the hack.
• Given the order to track down the hackers, Pike uncovers a much larger and
more dangerous plot than a simple attack on his organization. That hack was
just a test-run, and the real one is coming soon, created by a former NSA
specialist in the U.S. government.
• The enemy wants to return to the bipolar world of the Cold War, the turncoat
has cloaked his attack behind hackers from Serbia and Russia, and if successful,
his target will alter the balance of power on the global stage. So far, the
specialist has remained one step ahead of the Taskforce, but he has just made
one massive mistake: hitting Pike Logan.•

chance of hydroplaning where tires lose
traction with the road. When tires start
to slip with cruise control on, your car will
try to accelerate to maintain the set speed,
which could cause you to lose control of
your vehicle. Don't use the cruise control
in wet conditions.
Do you allow extra room between your
vehicle and the one in front of you in
wintery conditions? The distance required
to come to a complete stop increases in wet,

at least three times more space than usual
with the vehicle in front of you. And if icy,
lengthen the distance to about ten times.
Considering that bridges and overpasses
ice first, do you adjust your speed as you
approach? The road may be dry, but a
bridge may have unsuspecting ice. Try
not to apply brakes or accelerate while on
a bridge or overpass if possible. Sudden
movement can cause loss of traction and
ultimately control. The same advice applies
when in a curve, brake before, but not in
