We started with a picnic at the Savannah

more perfect day as it was sunny and warm.
We also had a gentle breeze as we paddled
and floated along enjoying the beautiful
vegetation of the canal and the wildlife.
There were so many turtles sunning
themselves along the way, so they must have
enjoyed their day also. The turtles did give
us the feeling that we were invading their

Joe Locke from Connecticut. Blu managed
to push Debbie and Joe across the Great
2021 Challenge “finish line” on the last day
of April. As with their adoption of Blu, the
Lockes have often taken life steps in a slightly
unusual way. Debbie and Joe met on a blind
date 40 years ago, (somewhat traditional)
but instead of going to the movies or out to
dinner they went horseback riding. Debbie
was a bookkeeper who retired as an Office
Manager for a bookkeeping company. They
moved to SLV in December 2020, but Joe was
still working in Connecticut as a computer
scientist for United Technologies. When he
decided to retire in April of 2021, Debbie
was not sure of how to celebrate since their
children and colleagues were out of state,
while they were only a few months into life at
SLV. Wanting to acknowledge the moment,
Debbie spontaneously decided to host a party
and invited the Pickleball players (both Joe and
she have taken up the sport) and they had a
fun evening at the Recreation Center Pavilion.
Joe was shocked! In addition to Pickleball and
hiking, both Joe and Debbie are kayaking and
love it. They’re not sure about Blu.
Eleven walkers and two canines later, we are
at the end of our second chapter in the OAC’s
2021 Walking Challenge. Can hardly wait to
see who is next!•
