Quilt of  Valor Ceremony for

Veteran Howard Milhoan

O by WILLIAM FOUCH
N JULY 20TH, at the McCormick Area Veterans Association monthly
meeting, Howard Milhoan was presented with a “Quilt of Valor”
for his service during World War II & the Korean War. Howard
joined the Navy when he was 17 years old and served in the Pacific
Theater 1945 thru 1946, aboard LST 1074, as a Gunners Mate Striker
maintaining all of the weapons aboard the ship. Howard served again, this time with
the US Army, 1951-1952, in Korea as a First Sergeant with the 987th Armored Field
Artillery supporting several military units including the 1st & 7th Marine Divisions.
He has been the recipient of several medals, including the Presidential Unit Citation.
On behalf of MAVA we would like to thank Howard for his past and continued
service to our Country. We would also like to thank the veterans, friends and family
members that attended this special event. A special “Thank You” goes out to Ms
Kim Price, of the Anderson Quilts of Valor chapter, for presenting Howard with his
“Quilt of Valor,” and Howard’s daughter, Carrie Phillips, for coordinating the event.

The McCormick Area Veterans
Association (MAVA) was started a
short time ago in response to several
area veterans seeing a need for a
support function for veterans and
their families moving to the area. Our
purpose is not to supplant any other
veteran organizations, but to offer
yet another form of support for our
veterans and their families. We meet
the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the
SLV Recreation Center @ 6PM and
are open to all honorably discharged
veterans in the McCormick area.•

Inaugural Sunday Mixed Doubles Golf Tournament

by CHUCK and DENISE UITTO

One of the fastest growing weekly activities at Savannah Lakes Village is Sunday Mixed
Doubles Golf held every Sunday afternoon at the Tara Golf Course.

One man/one woman teams can play nine holes with good people and have fun.
Participants are invited to join in a social gathering at the River Grille after play.

It is a great way to meet other residents of SLV.

WE HELD OUR inaugural tournament on August 1st, which
required teams to have an established year-to-date quota, allowed
some teams to test their skills across eighteen holes, while others
stayed with the traditional nine holes. Both flights were contested in
equal segments of scramble, alternate shot and best ball.

October. We invite new teams, with an understanding of golf rules
and etiquette, to give it a try.•

has also provided wonderful opportunities
and we look forward to developing new
relationships.

At this time our organization is
navigating critical projects, new
opportunities, and the difficulties caused
by this elongated health crisis. Nationally,
cultural and artisans centers have
struggled, many are closing permanently.
To ensure we are successful in our return
to deliver our mission to our community
the MACK must continue to prioritize our
MACK Rehabilitation Project and related
planning for a robust, sustainable return
to vibrant youth and community programs
in a post-pandemic world. This “once
in 70 years” opportunity will ensure
McCormick continues to have cultural
experiences, artisan opportunities, and
quality programming for generations to
come. While our historic site is preparing
for our construction project, we continue
to provide programming and appreciate
your ongoing support.

If you are new to McCormick, or the
MACK, please send us a quick email to
introduce yourself. All new residents to
McCormick County are welcomed as
Keturah Level Members (our highest
level and named in honor of the historic
site from which we operate) for a period
of one year – a $100 value. Additionally,
if you are interested in developing new
and private art classes, workshops, and
other cultural opportunities, please email
[email protected] so we can
begin to develop a relationship to serve
our mission.

In addition, our Artisan Guild & Gift
Shop is now a thriving part of downtown
McCormick and is open Monday -
Saturday from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

We are local surgeons who live and practice full-time in the Lakelands community. We care for all our
patients here at the region’s largest referral hospital. You and your family members don’t need to
travel out of town. As your hometown orthopedist, we are proud to serve you and your physician when

s  urgery is needed.

High-quality and safe care for our patients is our highest priority at Self Regional. In addition, you have

a  ccess to a wide array of specialists, normally only available in much larger, metropolitan areas.

Our surgeons are board certified and several have received fellowship training in a subspecialty area;

a  nd, together, we are able to offer both general services and the extra skill associated with a specialist.

Our subspecialties include:

• Minimally invasive surgery

• Arthroscopic surgery

(microscopic joint surgery)

• Hand, foot and shoulder surgery

• Sports medicine

 • Total joint replacement

When your physician recommends

an orthopedic specialist, Orthopaedic

Associates of the Lakelands is local

healthcare worth asking for. Nonereefdeerdra. l
