A Great Time For A Great Cause by CISCO TORRES O N FRIDAY, MAY 31st the SLV One Hit Wonders Softball Club participated in the Making May Miracles Charity Softball Tournament at the Riverview Park Complex in North Augusta. The event benefited the RECing Crew. The RECing Crew Special Leisure and Recreation Association is a non-profit organization and community partner with the United Way that was established in 2002 by the families and friends of those with disabilities to offer leisure and recreational opportunities for individuals with disabilities from the CSRA. These programs enhance the physical, emotional, and social growth of those that participate. Currently, there are 200+ amazing individuals, ranging in the ages from 6-88, that participate in one or more of the offered programs. The night was both to raise additional funds needed for the all-new Miracle League Field and to celebrate its opening. The field was created as a space for those with disabilities to play sports. Playing on grass isn’t easy for everyone.“The current rec fields have surfaces that aren’t very accessible for individuals with disabilities,” said Pamela Stickler who runs the organization behind the project. Uneven surfaces and ruts make it difficult for some to play on the field. She said the new field is a multipurpose, totally accessible field open to any special needs organization in the area. It has a synthetic turf surface, an accessible dugout, pavilion, and more. The night started off with some incredibly enthusiastic members of the RECing Crew playing a game on their old field as the new one was not quite ready, but as of this writing should be open for play. Prior to the softball action Dottie Torres & Sheila Layton presented a check for $1,000.00 to Pam Stickler. A special thanks goes out to SLV resident Carrie Gehlbach and Texas Instruments who matched our donated funds. lumber as they throttled Aiken 25 - 8. Bob Capitani kept opposing hitters off balance all game mixing up his pitches and served notice that he was shutting down the middle on the first pitch of the game as he gloved a hard-hit line drive. He was backed up defensively all-around but most notably by Scott “The Hammer” Hammerton with some glovely work at 1st base. The Wonders then took on the Augusta Hitting Club in the final as they ignored the good-natured trash talking and countered the young legs of the North Augusta Police Department with some timely late inning hitting to win a close one. The Wonders fell behind early 10 – 0 but stormed back with the help of a towering home run to centerfield by Cisco Torres and a massive blast to left by Jimmy Zelgewicz. Going into the bottom of the 7th the Wonder still had a chance thanks to an ESPN Web Gem worthy grab by Len Fouch as he went up the 3rd base line battling the lights and making a spectacular over the shoulder catch. But, the Wonders came up short falling 17 – 15. It was a Great night for a great cause, and we are all so proud to have been able to do our part. IN 1764 THE FRENCH HUGUENOTS ARRIVED IN NEW BORDEAUX Commemorate the 260th Anniversary Of Huguenots Arrival Sunday, August 4, 2024 Huguenot descendants and friends will gather in the Chapel of the Governor’s School of Agriculture at John de la Howe School, 192 Gettys Rd., McCormick, SC. Registration is at 10:00 am followed by the service at 11:00 am. Speaker for this event is Mr. Tom Poland, wellknown author, journalist and speaker. Please bring your own picnic lunch which can be shared in the school cafeteria following the service. Who were the Huguenots? “The word Huguenot seems to be of unknown origin, it was applied by the Roman Catholics of France as a term of derision and offense to those who were not of their faith.” – this, according to an article by Lewis Perrin, entitled “THE SETTLEMENT OF THE HUGUENOTS AT NEW BORDEAUX” found in the Willington History Center. The article describes in detail the horrors of persecution faced by the French Protestants for their religious beliefs. Reverend Jean Louis Gibert was the Protestant religious leader who led the first group of 212 persons out of France in 1763, having begged England’s King George III for a grant of land in the New World for his “band of followers.” Located on the western bank of Little River in what was then Abbeville District in South Carolina ”…they named their new home New Bordeaux in memory of the home they had left in their beloved France.” The article states that at once they began to build their houses, clear land, plant grape vines to make wine and mulberries, and manufacture silk which were industries successful in their homeland of France. Other articles tell of their successes and failures in these industries. Join us August 4th and learn more about the Huguenot forebears who settled in this area of South Carolina. For All Of Us Who Love To Read by MARY TOBIN FOL Publicity Chair I F YOU’VE WATCHED Lady Whistledown bring her pamphlet to the town printer in Bridgerton or the Outlander episode when Claire returns to Jaime; as he’s preparing his printing press and inspecting the inked text … You will certainly agree we’ve come a very long way from the 1800’s and the rudimentary process of printing books and materials. Today, publishing houses, organizations and individuals produce millions upon millions of printed books and documents for us to choose from, whether we are seeking information or relaxation. Paperback or hardbound, the pages of printed books are filled with escape, relaxation, information, and more. And the sources to obtain books have never been more accessible. For McCormick readers especially, there is no easier and more convenient way to satisfy your reading preferences than through our McCormick town library and Books on Main bookstore. Why? That is where the Friends of the McCormick County Library organization and Library director, Paul Brown come in. The FOL Executive Board, committee chairs, and over forty volunteers, partnering with Brown and his staff, are committed to our town’s library initiatives and needs; as well as providing you with low-cost books at our Books on Main retail store. Under Brown’s dedicated leadership, you will discover thousands of books in every imaginable category, housed within the walls of our handsome brick library building at 201 Railroad Ave. And if you want a title or author not in the current inventory, just make a request, and Paul’s team will secure it for you 99% of the time. Of course, library card holders also have access to thousands of audio and downloadable books, as well as many other services. The Friends of the McCormick County Library organization continue their community service through Books on Main, our downtown retail store filled with low-cost books in every imaginable category, along with games, puzzles, audio books and music CD’s. Behind the scenes, volunteers sort, price, shelf, and staff store hours every Wednesday through Saturday; ready to help you locate everything from espionage novels, the best garden perennials for our area, or the perfect children’s books to read to your grandkids when they visit. Here is how you can get involved. Always donate your books at the library location and an amazing team of volunteer workers sort through your contributions and direct them to where they will be the most beneficial to the library and the community. This includes a major time consuming, “behind the scenes” project, of identifying and listing books for sale on Amazon. FOL volunteers also stock ‘little libraries’ at remote area locations, where you can take a book home to enjoy anytime. And what may be the biggest surprise to you of all, is that when you visit the Library and Post Office and hear the laughter of the town’s children playing and swinging nearby; be aware that building the playground, purchasing, and replacing equipment and annual upkeep is largely funded through FOL revenues from your purchases at Books on Main and our Amazon sales. Brown is currently spearheading efforts to raise the funds necessary to construct a playground shelter with seating. FOL has already committed funds to this endeavor. As you can readily see, The Friends of the McCormick County Library is an exceptional group of volunteers, dedicated to our mutual love of reading and to creating the revenues necessary, to ensure our community also has access to as many books as possible. In addition to donating your gently read books at our library, consider becoming a volunteer at Books on Main, by contacting Janice Bright at [email protected] or Barb Rothermal at [email protected]. Finally, we want to thank all area residents who recently donated monies to our organization, following receipt of our annual newsletter mailing. If you would like to support our efforts financially, contact board treasurer, Laura Clegg at [email protected] to learn where to send your Tax Deductible donations to Friends of the McCormick County Library. Please think of us whenever you turn the pages of a book you hold in your hands or listen to an audio book and thanks in advance for your support! 14 • July 2024•SavannahShorelines.com

by JOHN COMPSTON B EING A DEFENSIVE driver was central to our discussion last month. So, when driving, have you made the decision to pay attention to the road at all times. This is a key element of defensive driving. And provides the best opportunity to continually be aware of one's surroundings and any potential hazards or risks. Defensive drivers always keep themselves detached from other drivers. But, what does that look like. Maybe you are driving the Defensive Driving? Count me in. Fourth Of July decorations at Plum Branch Yacht Club DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION Fun Fourth of July Facts by FAITH MURDOCK Long Cane Chapter DAR S URPRISE! OUR COLONIES actually declared independence from Great Britain on July 2nd, 1776! On that date, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution introduced by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, declaring the thirteen colonies “free and independent States” and “that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown.” John Adams believed that this should have been the official date for Independence Day, but since the Continental Congress did not approve the official Declaration of Independence document until July 4th, this became the date for celebrating. There was a committee of five who wrote the Declaration of Independence: Thomas Jefferson (who did most of the work), John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston (who never signed it). Approved on July 4th by the Second Continental Congress, the document was not signed by anyone because it had yet to be sent to the printer. Not all representatives of the thirteen colonies approved the document. New York had to abstain, awaiting approval from their colonial government, and thus did not formally agree to the Declaration until July 9, 1776. Eventually 56 delegates signed the Declaration of Independence, but there is a wide-ranging debate as to who signed when. It does seem agreed that about 34 delegates signed the document at the somber ceremony in the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia (now known as Independence Hall) on July 4th, 1776. Most of these men feared for their lives, fully expecting to be hanged by Great Britain. It took about six months for the remainder of the delegates to sign the document, the last being Thomas McKean of Delaware. The first signature on the Declaration was that of John Hancock who was President of the Second Continental Congress. His large and ultimately famous signature was at the center of the page after the text. Protocol of those times was to sign on the right by geographic location. Therefore, New Hampshire delegates began the list on the right column. The most southern states were at the end on the left (delegates from Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina). The youngest signers were both from South Carolina: Edward Rutledge and Thomas Lynch, Jr. age 26 and the oldest was Benjamin Franklin, age 70. The first public reading of the Declaration occurred in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776. The proclamation was made on the steps of what is now Independence Hall by Colonel John Nixon. The first official Fourth of July celebration took place in Philadelphia in 1777. John Adams wrote to his wife, Abagail, that the signing of the Declaration of Independence should be commemorated “with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” And so it has been for almost 250 years. speed limit and another vehicle comes up from behind and is now tailgating you. Or, you are driving and suddenly another vehicle cuts you off causing you to almost lose control of your vehicle. In both cases, a defensive driver does not take these acts personally. Rather, the individuals in the other vehicles are seen as a hazard or risk to be avoided. Simply put, the defensive driver knows that if they view this as personal, they will likely get angry and may seek to get even with the other driver. And then it would be them possibly responsible for an accident. They realize there is nothing they can do about others. They do not allow themselves to get angry and possibly do something they normally would not do. Have you given much thought to the danger intersections present, even when controlled by traffic lights. Entering an intersection as the light first turns green is without a doubt a very dangerous time. Any driver entering the intersection as soon as the light changes green is assuming that other drivers will obey the red light in their direction. Unfortunately, there are far too many drivers who when approaching an intersection and the light turns yellow, do not begin too slow. Rather they increase their speed thinking they will make it through the intersection before the light turns red. And all too often, the driver miscalculates the distance they are from the intersection, resulting in them actually entering the intersection on red. Thus, making anyone who is entering the intersection from a crossing direction a potential target. Defensive drivers give strict attention to their surroundings at all times, even at a red light. They do not take the stance that a red light is a time out from driving. They stay attentive at the red light. They constantly scan the entirety of the intersection from all directions, using all of their mirrors to make sure when the light changes green they are confident it is safe to move forward. Danger accompanies intersections controlled by stop signs as well. Never assume that other vehicles will make a complete stop. Remember, all intersections require one's up most attention at all times. A defensive driver is dissimilar from an average or even a good driver. They remain vigilant at all times, continually scanning their surroundings to avoid any potential risk or hazard. The defensive driver has the specific intent to avoid an accident. So should all SLV. Danger accompanies intersections controlled by stop signs as well. Never assume that other vehicles will make a complete stop. SavannahShorelines.com • July 2024 • 19

ABOUT DAVID ROSENFELT: David Rosenfelt is the Edgarnominated and Shamus Award-winning author of more than twenty novels. He grew up in New Jersey, attended NYU and worked in the movie business eventually becoming President of Marketing for Tri-Star Pictures. He then started his writing career, penning both feature films and TV movies. Rosenfelt and his wife now live in Maine with an ever-changing pack of rescue dogs. ABOUT THE NOVELS: The Andy Carpenter series surround the fictional character Andy Carpenter, a New Jersey lawyer who would rather not practice law. He’d rather spend his time working on his dog rescue organization that is his true passion, and being with his family and his two dogs, Tara and Sebastian. With his trademark humor and larger-than-life characters – including his former-police officer wife, Laurie, her investigative partner Marcus, and various canine companions – Rosenfelt delivers an equal measure of suspense and laughter as Andy and his eccentric crew solve cases in which dogs are always at the center. ROD & GUN CLUB Rod & Gun Club Hosts Dynamic "Defensive Shoot" Event: Participants Master Target Skills Across Three Stations by JANET BLOUIN L AST MONTH THE Rod & Gun Club held a “Defensive Shoot” to give participants an opportunity to shoot at a variety of targets. Instead of shooting at one stationary target, there were 3 shooting stations, each with different target opportunities. The first station consisted of firing two shots into each of 3 targets. The second station involved firing 6 shots at different shapes which were numbered—the shapes were to be shot in numerical order. The final station consisted of firing two shots into each of 3 paper plates. The goal was to be able to shoot, eject a magazine, move to the next location, reload and shoot the next targets. Each person could shoot the sequence as many times as he/she desired in order to master the techniques. The opportunity provided participants a chance to work on their loading/reloading skills as well as moving before shooting a target. No prizes were awarded, but everyone who participated left a winner! Defensive Shooting Station 1 Defensive Shooting Station 2 Defensive Shooting Station 3 24 • July 2024•SavannahShorelines.com

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CLUB SLV Residents Learn All About Periodical Cicadas and How to Manage Local Insect Pests Including Fire Ants by MICHAEL SHOEMAKER O N THE EVENING of Tuesday 14 May, the Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC) sponsored an educational presentation by Vicky Bertagnolli, Consumer Horticultural Extension Agent, of the Aiken County Clemson Cooperative Extension Office, and entomologist (insect subject matter expert). She provided a fascinating and entertaining talk to over 95 SLV residents, on the life-cycle of 13-year Brood XIX(19) periodical cicadas we have been experiencing for weeks. Vicky's talk also covered how to identify, and properly manage, using science-based integrated pest management (IPM) techniques a variety of local SC insect pests, including fire ants (her specialty), smoky-brown cockroaches (aka palmetto bugs), ticks, spiders, the small black southern unstriped scorpion, some newly imported insect pests, and a variety of other local insects. After the talk, an interactive, informative and entertaining question and answer session addressed attendees questions on identification and management of insects they were curious about. She promised to provide additional reference material that will be distributed to those interested. Following the positive feedback received after the talk, we hope Vicky will provide additional talks to our community in the future. SLV Outdoor Adventure Club Enjoys a Perfect Kayaking Day on the Augusta Canal by JUDY LORIER O N THURSDAY, MAY 2, 23 members of the SLV Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC) kayaked down the Augusta Canal in Evans, Georgia. What a glorious day. The weather was perfect – sunny and warm with a gentle breeze. We started with a picnic lunch at Savannah Rapids Park and this is where the paddle started also. We paddled 5 miles down the canal with the currentmaking it an easy trip. When we reached Lake Olmstead, we had to work a little harder for the last ½ mile to the pick-up spot. During the trip the cicadas harmonized in the background as we enjoyed the wildlife and the beautiful shores. It was a good time to meet new people and enjoy each other's company. 26 • July 2024•SavannahShorelines.com

OAC Hiked Trails at Watson Mill State Park by LINDA McCLINTOCK O N TUESDAY, MAY 7, thirty-one Outdoor Adventure Club (OAC) members went to Watson Mill State Park to hike and enjoy the beauty of the park. The park is located on the South Fork of the Broad River outside Comer, GA. It boasts the longest original covered bridge still in use in Georgia. We hiked a 2.8 mile trail through the woods and then enjoyed our picnic lunch together at a pavilion. After lunch, hikers had the option of another hike on either the Beaver Dam Trail (.75 mile) or the Ridge Loop trail (1.5 miles). Lastly, the group could explore the covered bridge, walk barefoot in the rocky shoals of the river, or sit and relax on the rocks next to the river. We did have a little excitement on the first hike. One of the hikers encountered a copperhead crossing the path. Luckily this alert and active lady displayed her extraordinary high jumper skills. We are considering entering her in a completion - she appears to be a natural. There are pictures of the copperhead but not the spectacular jump. We all had a nice day together taking in the natural beauty of the park and enjoying each others friendship. It is always nice to get to know people as we walk and talk on these events. If you enjoy outdoor adventures such as this (perhaps without the snake) and are not already a member of the OAC, you may wish to join our group. Brochures are available at the SLV Recreation Center with instructions on how to join. 28 • July 2024•SavannahShorelines.com

TENNIS / PICKLEBALL COMMITTEE SLV’s USTA TEAMS COMPETED AT SC STATE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS by MARSHA LUSBY S LV PARTICIPATES IN the Greenwood Area Tennis Association (GATA) leagues and has done well over the last decade. In fact, one of our own SLV residents, Brian Aufderheide, played for a men’s 70+ Gatewood team which went on to win the SC State Tennis Championship in May. Two of SLV’s women’s teams advanced to the South Carolina State Championships in Hilton Head, also in May and consist of the following SLV residents and others: Ann Fago – 3.5 Women 55+ • Ann Fago, Captain • Vicki Colon • Chris Corn • Mary Fuchs • Suzie Kaeding • Cindy Peterson • Kim Petruska • Linda Vanderford • Sue Watson • Beth Weik Fran Castle – 3.5 Women 70+ • Fran Castle, Captain • Suzie Kaeding • Kathie Kase • Guinn Lane • Marsha Lusby • Lana Snellgrove • Chris Webster • Betsy Luquire (Mt. Vintage) • Lois Neise (Mt. Vintage) "Two of SLV’s women’s teams advanced to the South Carolina State Championships in Hilton Head..." The teams played well but were not able to advance to the next level. Weather conditions were a challenge this year, requiring some of the teams to play shorter sets. Again, SLV tennis continues to thrive on the women’s side. The men need to get moving. SLV REC CENTER HOSTS OPEN HOUSE by MARSHA LUSBY T HE SLV RECREATION Center hosted an Open House on Saturday, May 11th. All clubs and activities were represented. One of the highlights of the event, was target practice on the tennis courts. Residents (tennis players and/or non-tennis players) lined up to see if they could hit a tennis ball (being fed by the tennis ball machine), through a large target on one court and a smaller target on a different court. Anyone who made it through the large target received a $10 SLV Gift Card. Anyone who made it through the smaller target (much harder) received two $10 SLV Gift Cards. In order to purchase the SLV Gift Cards, Mike and Marsha Lusby raised $800 in generous donations from Capital Home Builders, Michael Trent, Greene Advantage, and the SLV Windfall Group. We would like to thank all the contributors for their generosity in making this event a huge success and we hope that it will become an annual event. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8-9) A True Story In 2006, a profound demonstration of grace unfolded in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, after a devastating event: the Amish Schoolhouse Shooting. On October 2nd, Charles Carl Roberts IV barged into a one-room Amish schoolhouse, taking ten young girls hostage and tragically killing five before ending his own life. The nation was shocked by the brutality of the act, leaving the community to cope with immense grief. Remarkably, the Amish responded with extraordinary forgiveness. Hours after the tragedy, they visited Roberts' family, offering condolences, forgiveness, and compassion—remarkably to those connected to their own profound loss. This grace extended beyond a single act. In subsequent days, the Amish continually supported the shooter’s family. They invited Roberts' widow to the victims' funerals and established a fund to assist his family financially and emotionally. This response vividly exemplifies living according to the teachings of Jesus, reflecting unconditional love and humility as highlighted in Ephesians 2:8-9. Their actions remind us that grace is a tangible force, capable of transforming the gravest tragedies. Grace is Hard Embracing grace through forgiveness and reconciliation can revive spirits, especially when self-forgiveness seems unattainable. We all need grace daily, yet extending it to others can be challenging. When wronged, our instinct might be anger. Jesus advised against letting anger linger, yet putting this into practice is often difficult. Offering forgiveness, overcoming perceived injustices, and facilitating healing require significant, intentional effort. Indeed, grace is more readily received than given. Grace is Costly Offering grace often means sacrificing something personal, such as pride or a sense of justice. It involves converting our experiences of pain into opportunities for healing and justice. However, neglecting the hard work of grace allows anger to fester, turning minor grievances into severe rifts, eroding our humanity. Jesus' life and sacrifice epitomize the challenging and costly nature of grace. Despite his innocence and benevolence, he endured rejection, suffering, and death, ultimately to liberate us from sin’s perpetual consequences. His grace offers us redemption and life. Grace is Vital The essential nature of grace, abundantly bestowed by Christ, counters the destructive weight of sin. The unanticipated and unmerited grace we continually receive inspires and equips us to be conduits of this vital gift. As the Amish extended grace to the Roberts family, so too does God extend grace to us—unearned and transformative. Reflecting on Ephesians 2:8-9, we are called to embody this grace, offering forgiveness and love even when it seems most daunting. By embracing and reflecting Christ’s grace, we contribute to healing and hope in a world that desperately needs it. The Amish community's response and Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice teach us about grace’s profound impact, underscoring its necessity, cost, and transformative potential in our lives. 34 • July 2024•SavannahShorelines.com

GREEN EYED LADY Hi! My name is Kayleigh and I’m a 3-year-old kitty who is unashamedly addicted to love and snuggle sessions. I make my delight at meeting people known by bestowing affectionate rubs against them with an open invitation to reciprocate. I especially love to be brushed. It not only feels good but helps to keep my white coat – which looks stunning against my green eyes - looking great. I tend to keep my “motor” running during these sessions and will also knead you like you’re a giant loaf of bread. I am looking for an indoor home, maybe with a sunny windowsill or two. I am spayed and up to date on all vaccines. I have to share that I tested positive for FIV but I am healthy and can’t pass this to you or your doggie friends. FIV does not pass easily to other cats except for a deep bite but I am a very laid back kitty so few worries there. I WANT TO BE YOUR ONE AND ONLY! My name is Pawlina and I am a sweet, seasoned pup who will make a perfect companion to share quiet times or as a walking buddy. Just say it’s “walking time” and you’ll set my tail-a-wagging! I prefer a laid back environment rather than lots of hustle and bustle and would like to be an only dog. I have enough love to give that you won’t miss having another pooch around. My birthday is 3/22/2016, weigh about 52 pounds and am a “Heinz 57” pup so a bit of this and that from the doggie’s gene pool (all the best genes of cause!) I am spayed, microchipped and have all my shots. I would love to spend my life with you! Pawlina PETS OF THE MONTH Please leave a message at 864-391-2349 or email us at [email protected] if you are interested in learning more about our available dogs and cats.
