BOOK BUDDIES WRAP UP A Great Year
by MARY WESTGATE
ON MAY 23 the McCormick Friends of the Library invited all
the participants of the Book Buddies project to visit the Books
on Main bookstore. The purpose was to enjoy an outing and to
celebrate an excellent year of reading and learning together. The
children enjoyed a story and craft led by Linda Deshano, and each
took home a new book for summer reading.
The Book Buddies program was started 20 years ago as a joint
effort between McCormick Elementary and volunteer tutors
who coach kindergarteners in language skills to get them reading
for reading on their own. It is a program which is part of the
community outreach effort of the Friends of the Library. It runs
from October through May. We pair one mentor or tutor with a
youngster to work on reading readiness in conjunction with the
school curriculum. It is very rewarding to see the progress that is
made with a one-on-one program.
If you might be interested in learning more about Book Buddies,
or any other volunteer opportunities with the Friends, just stop by
the McCormick Library and pick up a copy of our newsletter. The
officers listed on the back would be glad to give you
more information.•

GARDEN OF THE MONTH
Garden of the Month
Margie & Tom Rodak
by NANCY RENSTROM
THE MCCORMICK
GARDEN Club is privileged
to honor the gardens of Margie
and Tom Rodak as our July
Garden of the Month. The
gardens are located at 208 Placid
Cove Lane. As you approach
the residence the overwhelming
impression is of an English
Cottage Garden. The sheer abundance and variety of flowering
perennials is a feast for your senses. The Rodaks are rock collectors
and didn’t hesitate to move some of their favorite specimens when
they came from Ohio four years ago. These specimens along with
whimsical frogs and a rock temple, honoring Tom’s service in
Vietnam, are interspersed with hollyhocks, larkspur, allium, zinnias,
gaillardia, rudbeckia and too many more to name. The Rodaks’
unique garden style continues on their deck where a five foot tall
metal rooster guards a recycled clothes drying rack that has been
repurposed as a tomato cage. If you want a respite from our
summer heat and humidity check out this cool garden.•

THE FIRST ANNUAL
Was A Huge Success!WESTERN SC BLUEWAY FESTIVAL
by LINDA McCLINTOCK
ON JUNE 2, 2018 over 600 people from Georgia and South
Carolina enjoyed the First Annual Western SC BlueWay Festival at
Baker Creek State Park in McCormick, SC.
The weather was beautiful and the people came by car and boat
to join in the fun. The music of three excellent bands, (The Riot
Band from Atlanta, GA; The Next Level from Rock Hill, SC; and
Brought by Blood from Charlotte, NC) could be heard throughout
the festival area and on the river. Many boats anchored out from
shore to enjoy the water and music.
Two outfitters, Earth Connection Outdoors and Savannah Rapids
Kayak Rental, were busy all day with people experiencing the kayaks
and paddle boards. Several people proudly announced “I can paddle
board now!” The paddle board yoga demonstration was amazing.
We can’t forget the kayak rodeo which had some very enthusiastic
participants. Elsie the cow stayed afloat the entire rodeo for all to
enjoy.
Another big draw at the festival were the mountain bikes from
the two bike exhibitors, Emerald Bike Shop and Outspokin’
Bicycles. Many people are still talking about the pedal assist bikes
they experienced and how they will make riding on the hills a joy!
Al Arthur and his working dog from Sand Hill Retrievers put on
a demonstration which people lined up to see.
Cabela’s provided a blow-up archery range that entertained
children and adults alike.
INNOVA Discs and the “The festival would not have

putting contests and provide

golf range.
There was a special Kidz Fun
Zone for the children to enjoy with games, face painting, washable
tattoos and more!
No one went hungry or thirsty, thanks to the excellent food and
drink offered by four local vendors
The numerous exhibitors for all things related to the outdoors
were excellent and well received. Many of the exhibitors were
sponsors for this event. The festival would not have been possible
without the generosity of our sponsors and the help of many
volunteers.
If you were not able to make the festival this year, mark your
calendars now for the first Saturday in June, 2019. The Second
Annual Western SC BlueWay Festival will be bigger and better than
the first!!!!•

In order to germinate, these seeds must crack
open by natural causes or human intervention.
A cracked shell if still viable will sprout within
a week or two. If you find one, be sure to pot
it, water it, and place it in direct sunlight over
50 degrees. Most sea beans will germinate very
rapidly.
The best time to find sea beans is after a
hurricane or wind change. Look for the seeds
and fruit along the high tide (wrack line) where
seaweed and marine debris accumulate on
beaches. Poke this line with a stick and look
closely. Searching for sea beans takes time and
patience. They are not as plentiful as shells, but
once you found your first sea bean, you’ll be
hooked for life.•

into an orchid previously thought to be extinct.
