Meet Lori Barba,

Founder Of The Ascending Bird Sanctuary

"If you take care of birds, you take care of most of the environmental problems
in the world."

— Thomas Lovejoy, Biologist and Godfather of Biodiversity

I AM A naturalist and lover of this incredibly created Earth. I especially adore songbirds! As a Lori Barba with a grackle she has
federally licensed songbird rehabilitator, I am involved in the rehabilitation and care of many of our rehabilited that broke from migration
region's neediest species. But we will, just like the birds I care so deeply about, need a lot of help to return to the sanctuary because of an
getting off the ground. Our Mission is to create an environment and habitat that will facilitate the
rehabilitation and release of native songbirds and waterfowl. With your help, we will be the area's only embeded tick on her eye.
specialty songbird rehabilitation center and sanctuary. We are the area's only native/migratory songbird
rehabilitation center and sanctuary, able to annually impact the lives of hundreds of our feathered Black and White Warbler
fellow creatures.
An Eastern Towhee found in the road
My love for birds has been within me from my earliest childhood memories, sitting in silence on a with ruptured air sacs and a missing tail.
swinging bench with my grandfather overlooking a terraced hillside of flowers with the morning dew
on my feet and the solemn call of the mourning dove echoing thru the dawn. That moment was deeply
profound. The peace was eternal and the call was buried in my heart. Even as a child, birds seemed
somehow sacred.

My home growing up was filled with parrots as my mother did exotic bird rescue. We also raised a
baby Starling. We named it "Rod" and released it back to the wild. It hung out with us on our porch
and would come and go through our window, eventually joining a flock and flying away. All of this
nurtured my affection for the feathered creatures.

At the age of 20, it was impressed upon my heart to get an African Ringneck Turtledove. I named it
Noli. After a few months, in my ignorance, I tried to set him free thinking he would be happier living a
liberated life outdoors. But after 3 days sitting in the same tree I realized he had no ability to survive in
the wild. So, I brought Noli back indoors letting him live freely flying through my house. 23 years later
he is still with me.

Oddly or miraculously, over the years doves came to me in various ways needing help or a refuge. I
also came across numerous songbirds in dire straits and realizing they had very little help available, I
decided to join a wildlife rescue organization (PAWS) not only to serve, but to get the education and
training I needed to be able to help birds in a monumental way. Now years later, my family and I are
ready to pursue this amazing vision in our hearts! We are so excited to create a beautiful sanctuary and
refuge for the feathered wonders of the world to thrive in!

Birds have become my poetry. They have become songs for my soul. It is as if my heart is growing
wings and learning to fly! Jesus said to "Consider the birds". They have so much to teach us. I am
learning. I believe the soul of mankind needs birds. On my grandparents hillside, in that garden oasis,
was my first vivid moment of clarity...where the mourning dove's call became my calling.

Please join us on this mission, so that we can be as the mustard seed, "which indeed is the least of all
seeds; but when it is grown it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air
come and nest in its branches."

Here are current and upcoming projects happening at Fledgling Carolina Wrens are what I call

Handle with care
The birds of the air

And you cradle them there.

And clouds so soft
While golden rays of light

Eastern Bluebird in rehab

The Ascending Bird Sanctuary In Urgent Need Of Help!

ASCENDING BIRD SANCTUARY, located in nearby Plum Branch, is about 4 years old, and is run by Lori Barba - the only federally
certified songbird rehabilitator anywhere close to SLV. She and her husband have acquired a very large ideal piece of land where Ascending
Bird Sanctuary is transitioning to where she will be able to better facilitate the hundreds of birds that come for rehab yearly. At the
sanctuary she rehabilitates orphaned and injured songbirds to release back to their wild habitat. Right now, Lori and her husband are in the
process of breathing life back into an old agricultural building on the property. Once completed, this will house numerous aviaries, space
for medical care / rehab, a room for educational programs which will include non-releasable educational birds, quarters for the interns
(post-Covid) and more. Right now, Lori must be 24/7 with the birds, leaving her little time for the facility.

Lori’s co-founder of the Sanctuary passed away not too long ago, leaving Lori in 24/7 complete care of the birds, some of which must
be fed every 30 minutes from dawn to dusk. Since Lori is now the only person who can touch or care for these birds because their federally
protected, that has left her precious little time to help her husband, who also works, to move forward on the building restoration. They
need…well, everything: building supplies, framing, plumbing, electrical work, volunteers to clean cages and prepare food, labor to help
with numerous tasks on the building. And monetary donations are necessary and needful. Lori answers all calls, however she really has little
time to chat except for serious inquires to contribute to the project and of course for birds in need that you may find for her to rescue,
rehabilitate, and release. Ascending Bird Sanctuary is 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and Lori does not receive a salary. Lori and her
husband are very knowledgeable, hard working, and appreciative of any help you or your group can offer. Please consider assisting this
positive addition to our community.•

ROD & GUN CLUB

SLV Rod & Gun Club
Held Annual

St. Valentine’s Day
Couples Shoot

by KEN WILES

THE SAVANNAH LAKES Rod and Gun Club held their annual St. Valentine’s Day Couples Shoot on Saturday February 6th. The
morning air was brisk as twelve couples braved the chill to compete in the event.

The event was conducted by range master Len Azzarano. The challenge consisted of a couple each loading 6 rounds and shooting at
their designated targets of four small round “clay pigeons” and two bowling pins. They were allowed to repeat this procedure twice, and
were able to use their best round for the competition. This process produced a three way tie which resulted in a “shoot off.” The top
teams from the shoot off were as follows; third place was awarded to Susan and Dwaine Wright, second place went to Joan Prince and
Charles Lewis, and the winners were Janie Clark and Al Gaer. Congratulations Janie and Al!

The St. Valentine’s Day Shoot is one of our most popular events. It is however, exceeded in popularity by our upcoming Arcade Shoot,
which is coming soon. The arcade shoot is conducted with 22 rifles shooting at moving targets like you would use to shoot at the local
carnivals. Watch your email for further information. This is a member’s only event, but you have plenty of time to join the fun. Simply
visit our web site slvrodandgun.org or stop by the POA for complete details. Membership is only $25 for the club and an additional $20 if
you desire to us the pistol range.•

CAN YOU BELIEVE it? We already have one resident cross
the finish line of the Outdoor Adventure Club's 2021 Challenge to
walk ALL the streets of the entire Savannah Lakes Village. That
is---completed, finished, done, all over with in about 26 days. Such
a time frame would leave most of us exhausted, but Peggy Heehn
says she is an avid walker. We plan to highlight Peggy in the April
edition of the Shorelines Magazine and have her reveal how she
undertook and accomplished covering so many streets in what is
most likely a record for the Challenge. CONGRATULATIONS
PEGGY!

It is never too late to sign up for the OAC 2021 Challenge, unless
you wait until December 31st. We currently have over 70 walkers
and at least three canine friends participating. We welcome all
newcomers to take it on. Become a member of the OAC and let us
know who you are by sending a quick email to:

you can start walking the Challenge.•

Travel Planning Resources for the Adventurous

by JIM HICKS

As winter drags on, many of us begin to have wistful thoughts about spring and summer travel plans.
We become armchair (laptop, iPod, PC or other portable devices) travelers, surfing various tourism
websites featuring glorious sunsets and stunning scenery.

BY ALL MEANS the internet has become a useful tool, and this article will mention several websites for travel planning, but let’s not
forget another valuable resource – your local public library.

To begin with, many libraries will have the popular Fodor’s series of travel guides on many countries as well as editions on American
states, major cities and attractions. Fodor’s are available in paperback or as an eBook from a library’s website using the Over Drive
application. (Just a quick note, if your preference is for eBooks, the Over Drive application is available as a free download from public
libraries in South Carolina, allowing you to borrow thousands of digital books and audio books using your library card.) If you are
concentrating on European travel, the classic Baedeker’s series of travel guides are a must but may not be readily available in some libraries.
Popular, however, are the colorful and picturesque DK Eyewitness Travel Guides (hardcopy and eBook) spanning the globe on many
countries and destinations. And too, let’s not forget the ever-familiar travel series, principally of European journeys, by Rick Steves also
available from your local library in print copies, eBook and videos.

For the outdoor enthusiasts, libraries can be a treasure trove with collections of books on camping, hiking, biking, boating, canoeing,
kayaking, bird watching and fishing.

My name is Jose P213

I was born March 7, 2008. My purpose in life was to hunt and seek things
out. My first memory is when I was young… jumping in water, swimming
and someone teaching me to retrieve something with feathers. I later
remember learning to smell things in boxes…getting my favorite ball when I
smelled a certain odor and lay down. One day I heard someone say, “He is
ready!” Then for the next six years, I became Jose P213. My human wore a
uniform. I remember boarding a large plane. There were many other
dogs in crates and numerous humans wearing the same uniform. The date I
left was March 2, 2010. I remember this because it was five days before my second birthday. I heard the
uniformed humans talking about a place called Afghanistan and the flight would be long. I felt safe because, even
though food was one of my favorite things in life, I loved humans even more. I remember being in this country
more than one time. I would later return April 8, 2011, and my last time to travel there was October 11, 2012. I
returned to the U.S. on April 15, 2013. I later heard that I was doing six months on tour and six months home
and I was in a pack they called the Marines. I loved being a part of that pack.
On 02/15/14, I made another trip…This time it was in a vehicle. I later discovered it
was a place called Augusta Georgia, and I was in a place called a Sheriff ’s Office. I was
a traveler; therefore, as long as there were humans and food, I was fine. The next seven
years I had the same human. He fed me well and gave me rubs. We traveled around in a
nice, roomy kennel and hunted for that odor I was trained to smell. I got to see so many
beautiful sights and events. One of my favorite places was a place I visited at least once a
year for six consecutive years. It was an event they called The Masters. I loved smelling all
the flowers and bushes. Many people would rub and love on me when they saw me there.
You see, I truly love people, and I love it when they love on me. We had a job to do first!
My human’s responsibility was to tell me when and where I would work and when I
could play. My human retired February, 2019. We loved each other, so I agreed to retire
with him.
My name is Jose, and my career was as a Marine and a Police Explosive Canine. I loved my job,
and I heard people saying I was really good at my job. I enjoyed my human family and friends. I got to see so
many things in life. I loved people, food, and swimming in a big lake. I’m very tired now. I think it is time to go.
Please don’t be sad or disappointed. God did not create me to live as long as humans and my body is very tired.
It is my time…
Retired/ Marine/ Deputy K-9 Jose
Richmond County Sheriff ’s Office
End Of Watch 01/26/21
It was an honor to walk behind Jose and I will be forever
grateful that Jose was a part of our life. Jose, you kept me safe,
and I believed in you. We love you, Jose. You have crossed that
Rainbow Bridge and earned your wings. Forever loved and
never to be forgotten…

Mercy is our last act of love.
