Longtime Volunteer, BET DOMBROWSKI, Honored at Friends of the Library Annual Luncheon by MARY TOBIN O VER 40 VOLUNTEERS were treated to lunch, organization updates and renewed friendship at the annual Friends of the Library Volunteer luncheon this past October. Held at the historic Cotton Gin in downtown McCormick and hosted by FOL Board members, attendees were brought up to date on future activities and information by group President Sandy Menard and Library Director Paul Brown. Menard reviewed the involvement Books on Main will have in upcoming McCormick holiday activities this December and the extension of BOM’s lease in their present location. Brown shared news on the groups’ plans to add a picnic shelter to the downtown McCormick playground. This playground, built and supported by the FOL and located behind the library, will allow families a place to relax and shelter from inclement and warmer weather. Monies were approved to support this project at the recent FOL Board meeting. Library Director Brown has also secured a grant; laying the foundation for the funds needed to build the new structure. Going forward, he will also be soliciting area groups to donate the additional funds needed to make this project a reality. The SLV Garden Club has pledged to help with the landscaping of the shelter, once built. Volunteers applauded as Brown reminded them to take note of the plaque and rose bushes planted at the library entrance, in honor of decades long volunteer, Bet Dombrowski. If you support the importance of providing area residents with easy access to the enjoyment and information both Books on Main and our town Library provide, consider becoming a Friends of the Library volunteer and financially supporting this worthwhile organization. Contact Sandy Menard for more information. Neighbors being neighborly… by MARILYN ZUCH U NTIL RECENTLY, THE Zuch’s were the only residents on Kristen Lane for 15 years. Additionally, for the past 23 years, no one lived on Matthews Lane. Both of these neighborhoods are located in the Monticello area of Savannah Lakes Village. And suddenly, like “Flowers in the Spring” those 2 streets have grown to 20 new homes! Thus it was decided that it was time to have the 1st Annual Kristen & Matthews Lane Block Party. Hosts were found in new residents Erica Holquest, Jeannette Koster, Sharon Fairley, and long time resident, Marilyn Zuch. The weather was a perfect South Carolina Autumn day, with a turnout even better than expected. The hosts provided hamburgers, sausages, potato salad and water with folks bringing some of their favorite sides and desserts. While the grills warmed up, Corn Hole was played, and new friends were made. 2023 Monticello Halloween Golf Cart Parade by BARBARA ARMSTRONG THE SCARLETT WAY neighbors get together each Halloween and set up for the kids to come Trick or Treating. Education is the Most Important Factor in Boating EDUCATION IS THE most important factor in boating, and knowing the basic rules will make your boating experience easier and more fun. Better boaters feel more confident on the water operating their boat and in the company of other boaters. They are boaters who boat more, boat more safely and have more fun. You can improve your boating skills and knowledge through a full range of nationally recognized boating education courses for both novice and experienced recreational boaters. America’s Boating Club – Thurmond Lake focuses primarily on safe boating for both members and anyone else who operates a boat. The 8-hour “America’s Boating Course” (better known as the ABC3 class) is recommended for new boaters and those who may need to brush up on their skills. The course covers the basics of safe boating on Thurmond Lake, includes a map-based tour of the 71,000- acre lake and a discussion of both South Carolina and Georgia boating laws. It is presented in three sessions, and you must attend all three sessions and pass an exam to get a course certificate. The fee is little more than the cost of the book. If you intend to operate a boat and have not taken at least a basic course, you may want to register for one before the 2024 boating season begins. Successful completion of the course brings discounts on boat insurance, a South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Boater Education card, and a discount on “Let’s Talk Trash” • Weekly Trash Pickup • Locally Owned in McCormick • Fixed Affordable Rates • On Time Every Time • Weekly Pickup Reminders • Weekly Newsletter • 24/7 Support Offers other services Junk/Debris Removal and Bin Cleaning www.Del-Mars.com (855) 833-5627 AMERICA’S BOATING CLUB AT THURMOND LAKE 1. 11/1/23 ABC course final exam being taken by 6 students. 2. Beginning December 16, 1944, 200,000 German troops and 1,000 tanks attacked Allied lines in the Ardennes forest of Belgium and Luxembourgattempting to push the Allies out of Germany. They drove a wedge (bulge) in the Allied lines. Although the Germans could not be stopped, they were delayed until the 4th Armored Division’s 37th Tank Battalion arrived December 26, having moved over 100 miles in five days. The ‘bulge’ was eliminated by the middle of January, 1945, at the terrible price of 75,000 U.S. Army casualties. The many tributes made annually to this sacrifice have been given the blanket term ‘Nuts Weekend’ which seems entirely inappropriate. The explanation is this: On Christmas Eve, 1944, the 101st Airborne Division, commanded by General Anthony McAuliffe, was besieged by German forces in Bastogne, Belgium. In reply to a German demand for surrender, General McAuliffe replied “NUTS!”, thus rallying his troops. Subsequent attempts by Germans to get a surrender had no better results, but the Germans didn’t understand what General McAuliffe meant. Finally, they were told “in plain English it is the same as ‘Go to hell!‘” Another Christmas Eve 1944 story emerged from near the battle scene. In a cottage in Hurtgen Forest, a 12 year-old boy, Fritz, and his mother, Elizabeth, were hoping that the father would be home from war in time for Christmas. Instead there would be other guests at the table. Three American soldiers, one wounded, asked for shelter, soon to be followed by four German soldiers. Elizabeth refused to allow their weapons into her home, saying “It is the Holy Night and there will be no shooting here.” She prepared chicken soup and all the soldiers found contributions in their packs, even a bottle of wine and some rye bread. One of the German soldiers had studied medicine before the war and he tended to the American. Elizabeth said grace through her tears before the meal as some of the soldiers also wept. In the morning they created a stretcher for the wounded man, shook hands, and returned to their own lines. Elizabeth bid them to be careful, saying “I want you to get home someday where you belong. God bless you all!” This story became public after Fritz who had immigrated to the U.S. published an article in Reader’s Digest in 1973; then appeared on TV in “Unsolved Mysteries” in 1995. A nursing home chaplain who had heard the story told by a resident contacted the TV producers. In 1996, Fritz met Ralph Blank who was grateful to Elizabeth for saving his life. Their story was also told in a 2002 TV show “Silent Night.” Interviewed in 1997, Fritz shared what he learned that Christmas Eve in 1944: “The inner strength of a single woman, who, by her wits and intuition, prevented potential bloodshed, taught me the practical meaning of the words ‘good will toward mankind.’ I remember mother and those seven young soldiers, who met as enemies and parted as friends, right in the middle of the Battle of the Bulge.” This is a touching and lasting remembrance of the true spirit of Christmas! The fleet left Elijah Clark State Park at 1:00 p.m. cruising in a single file to the Russel Dam, stopped on the way back atthe Bobby Brown State Park, and then arrived home at 4:30 p.m. The weather was warm with sunny skies, and a great time was had by all. OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CLUB SLV Outdoor Adventure Club Treated to The Rise of The “Super Harvest Moon!” by ROSE TRACY THE EVENING OF Sept 29, 2023 was a triple win for members of the Outdoor Adventure Club! Not only did we enjoy a nice paddle on a night with perfect weather and lake water like glass, but we also witnessed a beautiful sunset and saw the spectacular rise of the Super Harvest Moon as it cleared the horizon. It was an awe inspiring event! A “Super Moon” is a full moon that is closer to Earth than normal and thus appears larger and brighter in the night sky. The September Super Harvest Moon was about 5% bigger and 13% brighter than the average full moon according to NASA. The name “Harvest Moon” is a nod to the season of gathering because the event occurs close to the beginning of fall, or the autumnal equinox, which fell this year on September 23. The remaining full moons in 2023 will occur on: ● December 26: Cold Moon All of you SLV moon watchers have your telescopes and cameras ready and be on the lookout for more fun Outdoor Adventure Club happenings. OAC Swamp Rabbit Trail by MIKE VERKEYN ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26th, thirteen OAC members gathered together to bike ride the “Swamp Rabbit Trail” in Greenville, SC. The group met at the Swamp Rabbit Café where we readied our bikes and gear and started the ride. The weather couldn’t have been better, bright sunshine and temperatures around 80, providing the perfect backdrop to view the fall colors. The bikers rode the “Rails-toTrails” path to the town of Travelers Rest where we stopped at a local restaurant for lunch. Along the way we made a side trip to the Furman University Campus that took us around Furman Lake and a visit to their distinctive bell tower. After lunch, the group then rode the trail back to downtown Greenville and the Falls Park where we viewed the waterfalls and the beautiful scenery before returning to where we started. The group had a great time enjoying the sights and one another’s company. Can't wait until our next OAC outing. THE McCORMICK GARDEN Club launched a plastic recycling challenge at the beginning of 2023. The program collects plastic from the community and sends it on to Trex, a plastics recycling company. With every 500 pounds collected, we receive an earth-friendly composite bench from Trex. To date we have collected over 1500 pounds of plastic and received 3 benches. McCormick Middle School received the first bench which was donated to the school in March of 2023. The second bench was donated to the Savannah Lakes Trails and is located on the new Monticello North Trail. The third bench was recently donated to the Savannah Valley Trails and is located on the trail between Hwy 7 and the Trestle Bridge. As of today, we are well on our way to the next 500 pounds of recyclable plastic and another bench. Thanks to all of our partners; the McCormick Food Lion, the Outdoor Adventure Club, Savannah Lakes Village, the Lutheran Church by the Lake, the McCormick Middle School, Trex, and most especially our McCormick community for their incredible support in collecting plastic. We have recycling bins located at the McCormick Middle School, the Rec. Center entrance, the Lutheran Church by the Lake, the Monticello clubhouse, and soon at the McCormick Public Library. We accept clean and dry plastic including; grocery and produce bags, pallet wrap, bread bags, newspaper sleeves, dry cleaning bags, bubble wrap, and Ziploc bags. We CANNOT accept plastic bottles. The program is run by Trex and they determine what they can recycle. Examples of what is and is not accepted are posted next to the bins. The plastic must be clean, dry and free of food residue. TENNIS / PICKLEBALL COMMITTEE SVRT Founders Day Hike by LINDA McCLINTOCK WE HAD AROUND 30 people (and 3 dogs) come out to join some of the Outdoor Adventure Club members on Saturday, October 14, for the Savannah Valley Rails to Trails (SVRT) Founders Day Hike. The hikers were greeted by several members of the SVRT at the trail access on Badwell Cemetery Road. Barry Russell provided a short history about the railroad that ran until 1979. We hiked from the trailhead at Badwell Cemetery Road to Barksdale Ferry Road and back, which is approximately 4 miles. The wonderful volunteers of the SVRT had a tent with all of their information and goodies available including T-shirts, walking sticks, trail information and maps. When we completed our hike, they met us with hotdogs, snacks, drinks and Bernie’s fabulous homemade ice cream (chocolate this year). Thank you Bernie! The Founders Day Hike allows the participants to show their gratitude for the continued maintenance of the trails by this dedicated group of volunteers. Donations received at this event were greatly appreciated. We encourage everyone to experience and enjoy these trails. You can walk or bike on them. Please continue to drop a few dollars in the donation boxes at the trail head when you walk. Our continued support will help keep the trails nice for all to enjoy! If you like being outside and think you might be interested in joining the SVRT volunteer group, contact Butch Dieckhoner, Barry Russell (864)-602-1701 or Wayne Baker. Savannah Lakes Village Women’s Social Golf FOURTH ANNUAL PINK BALL CHALLENGE by KIM JACKSON The Fourth Annual Pink Ball Challenge, organized by Savannah Lakes Village's WSG9, took place on Wednesday, October 18. The delightful weather set the stage for a fantastic day of golf. This charity event, dedicated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, saw an incredible turnout of 88 enthusiastic ladies who generously devoted their time and energy to make it a resounding success, earning more than $17,500 to contribute to the BCRF to aid in breast cancer research. Congratulations are in order for the Front Nine First Place Winners: Cathy Carpenter, Geri Huminski, Kathleen Mihalyak, and Ruth Thomas, as well as the Back Nine First Place Winners: Lori Maines, Colleen Hill, Sandy Kessinger, and Anne Hiney. Special thanks go to the Pink Bow Ladies, who crafted and sold pink bows to the SLV community. These bows adorned golf carts, mailboxes, and businesses providing an avenue to show support for this noble cause. Gratitude is also extended to all who participated in and contributed to the online auction. A very special thanks to Larry Ingram ($200+) and to the Men’s Social Golf 9-hole group ($700+) who held their own mini fundraisers for the same cause. We express our deep appreciation to our generous Business Sponsors, our supportive community, and the widespread donors who joined forces with us in the fight against breast cancer through fundraising and education. The collective efforts of WSG9 and its ardent supporters exceeded our initial goal of $15,000! Indeed, it takes a village, and Savannah Lakes Village exemplifies this spirit. STREET SAFETY F OR MANY, DECEMBER is filled with much anticipation as they prepare to celebrate the Holidays. For them, it is a special time to gather with co-workers, friends and family. And amongst many of the celebrations, alcohol will surely be included. For sundry reasons, many individuals tend to drink more alcohol in December than any other time of the year. And this trend is on the upswing. As a result, the period between Thanksgiving and New Years Day usually sees a spike in alcohol consumption. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 13,384 people died in alcohol-impaired driving accidents in 2021. That translates on average to thirty-seven people having lost their life each and every day that year to a drunk driver. Sadly, this was a 14% increase over 2020. When considering the spike in alcohol consumption in December, the Holidays become a much riskier time to drive. Unfortunately, there are those who have lost a family member or close friend sometime in the past to a traffic crash where at least one of the drivers was alcohol impaired. Or maybe a loved one who has been critically injured in a traffic crash where again one of the drivers was alcohol impaired, changing their life forever. For these individuals the Holidays can be a very difficult time. While many are enjoying the celebrations during the Holidays there will be those who will grieve. Consider a parent who would give just about anything to hear just one more time a 'hi mom' or a 'hi dad'. Or consider those who wrestle with the incessant what ifs and if onlys that keeps them up at night. The consumption of alcohol affects the brain and thereby reduces one's ability to think, reason and impairs muscle coordination. These are all functions that are required for safe driving. So, prior to attending any Holiday function where one is likely to drink alcohol, it is best to have a plan for safe passage back home. The best plan is to have a designated driver who is without fail committed to abstain from drinking alcohol. And everyone should take responsibly for not letting another drive home if they have had too much to drink. That's what a friend would do. The Holidays are a special time as they bring friends and loved ones together. Do not be the somebody, if only someone else had made a better choice. Do not be the someone, if only someone else hadn’t chosen to drive drunk. Do not be the somebody who wrestles with the if only… This year give your loved ones and friends one of the best gifts. Give them the gift of not driving alcohol impaired today and always. JACK SNELLGROVE THE SEASON OF Thanksgiving allows our gratitude for the abundance we enjoy to be expressed. Gathering with family and/ or friends over food and drink traditionally celebrates the harvest of the field. This leads perfectly into the Season of Advent and Christmas. Advent is part of the liturgical calendar in Christian churches. It is a time of preparation for the birth of Jesus (December 25.) During this time, scriptures and hymns of the faith aid participants in preparing their hearts to receive the gift of God’s Son. The Christian faith gave birth to the season of Christmas, and many of the traditions have been adopted into secular life. Great care is given in many churches to decorate the place of worship with symbols of Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. Chrismon trees are in many churches adorned with the symbols of Christ’s Church. (The LCBTL features such a tree.) Trees along with wreaths, lights, and candles all help the worshipper prepare for Christmas Day. Of course you don’t have to be a Christian to celebrate Christmas. The spirit of love, peace, and joy is available to everyone. The hope of Christmas is to long for the day when everyone will be fed, clothed, and appreciated for who they are as God’s creation. Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol” expresses this well as stingy Scrooge is moved through his fitful dreams to become generous and grateful. The real hope of Christmas is Peace on Earth! In the songs, in the decorations, in the gathering of families and friends is the prayer for peace. It is our desire for peace to abide not only in our hearts, but also across our world. We can easily feel helpless in the cause for peace. After all, we are just a small group of people! But the journey toward peace begins with one small step. When we give to the food bank, we take a step. When we ring the bell for the Salvation Army, we take a step. When we seek out the stranger with friendliness, we take a step. When we sit with someone who has lost a friend or loved one, we take a step. Every loving action contributes to peace becoming a reality. This Christmas Lana and I will celebrate fourteen years in Savannah Lakes Village. Every year has been filled with “Merry Christmas!” and “Happy Holidays!” We have danced, dined with friends, shared a toast to each other and the New Year, and worshipped. Our hearts are filled with gratitude even as our cup overflows with goodness and kindness. Enjoy this Season of Christmas! It is a gift from our loving Creator to all God’s children! “Gracious God, thank you for the gift of life, love, and friends. Stir our hearts to gratitude moving us to live lives of thanksgiving as we share the joy of living and the gift of love. AMEN” 22 • December 2023•SavannahShorelines.com

TO “SIR’ WITH LOVE! My name is SirVivor, but my “peeps” just call me “Sir.” I am known as a “wiggly” pup which in my case means that although I’m a bit shy, I’m also thrilled to meet you. Just give me a few minutes with a lot of sweet talk, and we will be friends in no time! If I lean into you, it’s an invitation for some petting time. My shy smile will let you know that you are doing a good job. I enjoy pleasant walks and car rides to nowhere in particular. Sometimes it really is just about the journey. I get along with dogs but prefer to be your one and only. I like my space (as long as it includes you!) I am “chill” around horses, but I have not done extensive research on cats. I am a “bully” breed mash-up with a good helping of love mixed in. My birthday is 6/14/20, I’m a trim 45 pounds, have all my shots and I’m even neutered. For your peace of mind, I am also micro-chipped. If you come and pick me up, we can be home together for the holidays! FEELING BLESSED I’m Tina and I would love to get to know you. I can be a bit shy at first, but after a bit of quality one on one, I am ready for party-time. I enjoy the company of humans and feline friends. Y’all know that a girl can never have enough friends! I love playtime, especially with some interactive toys. People tell me that I am beautiful, and who am I to argue? My stunning silver and gray fur coat seems to be a big hit! I was born on August 25, 2022 and I’m aching to start my new life in a loving home. I’ve already been spayed, micro-chipped and I have had all my vaccinations. If you are looking for a sweet and playful friend in your life, then I’m your kitty! Everyone had a good time, and the improvement from the beginning of the class to the end was obvious. A big shout out to all the players, instructors, and helpers for making the session such a huge success. Based on the feedback and the waiting list, we expect to run similar classes in the future. Note: The Pickleball Club fully supports and appreciates the SLV Beginner program on Thursday mornings. Curtiss Wakefield, Geri Huminski, and others do a wonderful job with that group, and I encourage all beginners to utilize that great program. SLV / Augusta Senior Bowl III On Saturday, November 4th, the Blazing Paddles Pickleball Club hosted a team from Augusta for the SLV / Augusta Senior Bowl III. There were 36 players in action, along with several volunteers and dozens of spectators. It turned out to be a beautiful afternoon. The weather was perfect, and everyone had a great time. Although the home team fought hard, the Augusta team retained the trophy. We will try to bring it back to SLV when we travel to Augusta for Senior Bowl IV in the Spring. Congratulations to our undefeated teams of Kevin Betz and Roy Whetzel, and Deb Wissinger and Mary Harper. Everyone played hard and we are proud of them all. After the match the teams got lunch from the Village Cafe, and gathered in the Pavilion for fellowship. It was an awesome day all around. Thanks to all the players and spectators for making this a joyful event. Special thanks to volunteers Kim Swigart, Deb Locke, Rose Connor, and to our awesome timekeeper and score keeper Chuck Howell, from the CPA firm of Howell, Growl, and Foul.
