SLV Rod and Gun Club Held Their
First Annual Shoot / Don’t Shoot

Training Session

by KEN WILES
THE SLV ROD & Gun Club held its first annual training session
to help members sharpen their skills in determining when to shoot
and when NOT to shoot. The event was held at the Rod & Gun
Club’s pistol range. Club president Mark Young conducted the
event which was well received.

The event had eight shooters on the firing line. Each shooter had
a target containing six figures, 2 circles, 2 triangles and 2 squares.
Each figure contained a number from one thru six. The figures
were colored differently either red, yellow or blue. Shooters were
in the ready or firing position. Mark would call out a number, color
and figure. If the shooter had the configuration called he/she
would shoot. Time, accuracy and correctly shooting at the called
configuration were all considered in the scoring process.

The event was held on Saturday morning, April 14, with twenty-
five members attending and twenty-one shooting. This was a
member only event. If you are interested in becoming a member
contact any club member or the POA for information.

SLV Rod and Gun Club Presented the
“NRA Home Firearm Safety Course”

by KEN WILES
ON SATURDAY, APRIL 21 the “Rod and Gun Club” presented
the certified “NRA Home Firearm Safety Training Course”
conducted by certified instructor Mark Young. This was a non-
shooting course given at the SLV Rec Center. The four-hour course
taught students the basic knowledge and skills on how to safely
handle and store firearms and ammunition in the home. Students
were taught the NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling, primary
causes of firearm accidents, firearm parts, how to unload certain
action types, ammunition components, cleaning, care, safe storage
of firearms in the home, and the benefits of becoming an active
participant in the shooting sport.

Mark did an excellent job of providing many handguns, rifles and
shotguns for the students to practice safe handling. Students were
given the opportunity to load and unload chambers/magazines
(with fake ammunition, of course) and disassemble and reassemble
(for cleaning purposes).

Students received the NRA Home Firearm Safety Handbook, NRA
Gun Safety Rules brochure, Basic Firearm Training brochure, and
course completion certificate.•

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CLUB

Runnin’ T  he River Photo’s from last year’s fun on the water

JUNE 7, 2018

Time: Meet at Rec Center at 8:45 and leave in caravan by 9:00.

Should arrive by 10:15 to the The Sandbar on the river. Trip down
the river takes about 4 hours.

Cost: $20.00 includes a sit upon kayak (we really recommend

you use theirs), paddle, life vest, and shuttle service to the launch
location upstream. This money is paid directly to the Sandbar when
you arrive, not SLV.

Where: The SandBar on the Broad River in Bowman, Georgia

Description: This excursion will give an introductory experience

to riding a kayak through whitewater. It is recommended that you
have had some experience in a kayak, even if it is just on flat water,
before trying this event. We will spend time in the water at the
beginning going over the basics of how to read the river to locate
the best path to follow as well as practicing turning and other
paddle skills needed to negotiate the moving water and obstacles. It
is a day full of fun. You will get wet. Pack a lunch to eat along the
way, bring plenty of fluids, and sunscreen.

Sign up: By June 3 at the Rec Center desk.

We will contact you with more detailed information after the sign-
up deadline. In the meantime if you have any questions feel free to
contact Karen Greene at [email protected]

Please keep in mind that this event is dependent on the amount
water flow available in the river on this date. We will be checking
the levels daily prior to the event and if they appear to either be too
low or unsafely high we will cancel the trip and notify you as soon
as possible.

spend most of their time on the ground or
near it and prefer pecking at spilled seed
from feeders to visiting the feeder itself.
Generally monogamous, courtship displays
begin with males singing loudly to attract
a mate. When they spot a female, they sing
more softly. If the female is interested,
she presents the male with a leaf or a twig
while flapping her wings and chirping.
The male may give her a gift as well. Once
committed, the pair builds a nest either on
the ground or in low shrubs. Mating occurs
when the nest is completed. Both incubate
eggs and feed the young who often fledge
in only nine days after hatching. In South
Carolina, thrashers may have three broods
a year. Males attack other birds, dogs and
even humans who threaten their nest.
