STREET SAFETY Planning a long road trip? by JOHN COMPSTON M ANY OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTIC individuals look forward to June each year. This year in the northern hemisphere the June solstice occurs on Wednesday June 21, 2023. This day will be marked by the longest period of daylight and the shortest night. It will also mark the official beginning of summer. With longer periods of daylight, many will consider it a good time to take a road trip to see family, visit one of our country's beautiful National Parks or a mymarid of other destinations. But how long is it safe to sit behind the steering wheel and drive in a day? Those who drive professionally hauling property or carry passengers have strict federal regulations that they must follow. But, for everyone else, there are no laws regarding how long one can drive their vehicle in a day. A good recommendation to follow is to drive no more than eight hours a day or about 500 miles. This would include time for breaks and allow for traffic conditions. During any long trip it is wise to take a fifteen minute break every two hours and if travelling eight hours, take a longer thirty minute break around the four hour mark. Driving too long can affect one's ability to see clearly and slower to react to situations. A break provides an opportunity to get out of the car and move around. This can stimulate the mind and assist with alertness and being fully engaged with the task at hand. Stretching is an excellent way to avoid back pain that can occur after long periods of sitting. A rest stop or travel center can provide space for taking a short brisk walk to improve the blood flow. Having some healthy foods available along with water will assist with your drive. Many individuals drink a lot of coffee, but be careful, as coffee is a diuretic and can cause dehydration if too much is consumed. And dehydration can lead to being tired and fatigued. Foods high in fiber and protein will assist with giving a feeling of being full and energy to make sure that you stay feeling fresh even when stuck in the car for hours. Having someone along who will share driving responsibilities is always an excellent idea. Breaking up the driving responsibilities can reduce fatigue. And having someone to converse with can be a good method to stay alert. THE MACK by BOB STOCKTON THE McCORMICK CAR Club (MCC) burst into spring with five events last month and more scheduled for this summer. Members participated in a vehicle show at the Lutheran Church By The Lake festival, a parade for McCormick Elementary School students, a car show and barbecue party at Jiminy Fixit’s car repair shop, a Cruise-In on the Square in Washington, GA, and a car display at the McCormick Nursing Home. “The day for Jiminy’s started under threatening skies, but once we got there, the weather turned out to be excellent” said MCC organizer Gary Smith, who estimated 50 participants from all over the CSRA. “We owe thanks to Michelle’s for bringing its food truck and providing barbecue and to Jimmy who hosted the affair and provided wonderful music.” The Washington cruise-in was its usual success on a perfect May day, and MCC cars showed well in the popular event. Approximately a dozen cars and club members participated in the display for patients at the nursing home. Plans are well underway for the club’s annual picnic in June and other events for summer. McCORMICK CAR CLUB CAR CLUBBERS HAVE PEDALS TO METAL This magnificent 1931 Cadillac coupe attracted McCormick Car Club members’ attention at Washington’s Cruise-In on the Square. 1. The McCormick Car Club’s rides were freshly shined for an early May outing at Jiminy Fixit’s car service shop. Good BBQ and music were the order of the afternoon. 2. McCormick Car Club members displayed the club’s banner in front of their cars at Washington’s Cruise-In on the Square. 1 2 MACK Education Fund - Expanding the vision of John A. Yoder The vision and commitment of our dear friend, Mr. John A. Yoder, President and Founder of the Yoder Rosenberg Family Foundation will continue to serve our special community for generations. The McCormick Arts Council at the Keturah (MACK) is honored to expand the vision of John A. Yoder and the Yoder Rosenberg Family Foundation. John’s intentions were to give locally and provide crucial support and invest in the arts and local “young adults who will greatly add value to their communities as they continue on their path toward a bright future”. History of the Yoder Rosenberg Family Foundation Gift In October 2020, Mr. Yoder and the Yoder Rosenberg Family Foundation offered two pledges to continue his goals to support local development. The first was a $1.1 million pledge to support the MACK Rehabilitation Project. This project is now underway and will ensure the MACK is safe, accessible, and designed to deliver our mission to advance the arts in our deserving community. The second pledge of $1.5 million will now provide the essential resources to establish the MACK Educational Fund for the purpose of continuing an annual scholarship program. This scholarship program provides financial aid to graduating seniors from McCormick and Abbeville counties and will continue to reflect John’s intentions to develop student awareness of the importance of problem-solving, creativity, and communication. To date, 78 local students have benefitted from this generous opportunity. These funds are now restricted to honor our agreement. Ensuring High-Quality Arts Programming The second purpose of this fund is to provide annual funds to support the continued development and continuation of quality youth programming. Additional funds that are generated through investment and interest earnings will support the annual needs of the MACK’s youth program plan and advance the arts for all. The intention is to assist local students, families, and residents to ensure access to quality programming and cultural opportunities. If you would like to join our organization as a member, student, volunteer, artist, or leader - contact us via email [email protected], or explore our website. Scan the QR code to visit our website. We welcome you to join our cause! The MACK will take responsibility to plan, manage, and implement, or provide partnerships, to ensure artistic, cultural, and educational programs are available to all - but especially our youth community. Please see our Legacy Statement honoring our dear friend, John A. Yoder on our website - www.McCormickArts.org. We are forever grateful to John, his family, and the Foundation for entrusting our organization with this incredible level of support. 8 • June 2023•SavannahShorelines.com

DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION THE IMPORTANCE OF SOUTH CAROLINA IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION by BARBARA BURLESON DAR (DAUGHTERS OF The American Revolution) met on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at the McCormick County Library. Our guest speaker was Aliene Shields Humphries. Ms. Humphries was born in Spartanburg, SC, but soon afterwards her family moved to Edgefield County. After graduating from Columbia College with degrees in Special Education and Public Speaking/Drama, she worked at the South Carolina Department of Education and also taught students with Special Needs. After retiring from the "formal" education system, Aliene continued her passion as an educator by promoting Life-Long Learning. In 2010, she authored her first book, The Legacy Of A Common Civil War Soldier. This book is based on the letters written by her great-grandfather, Private Thomas Marion Shields during 1861-1865. She authored this book with her maiden name, same as her paternal great-grandfather. Presently, Aliene is promoting, The Importance of South Carolina in the American Revolution. Her new book includes 63 sites, plus the new Revolutionary War Visitor Center (in Camden, SC). These sites deserve to be visited, promoted, preserved, and interpreted for us to appreciate. She is hoping to bring more awareness of the important role South Carolina played in helping the 13 colonies become the United States of America, independent from England. Our ancestors deserve our respect and being remembered, so we may "connect" and pass the information to future generations. If interested in more information about the DAR, please contact Sheila Wolf, Registrar. 864-993-0148. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE McCORMICK COUNTY LIBRARY By FAITH MURDOCK Long Cane Chapter NSDAR MANY OF US remember when the McCormick County Library was tucked away in a downtown basement. Now it stands proudly as a hub of activity for both young and old. Recently, when asking for a brief history of this evolution, this writer received the following information: Public library service in McCormick County owes its existence to the interest of the McCormick County Council of Farm Women. Prior to 1953, the Council had worked towards the goal of a bookmobile and library for McCormick County. Miss Matilda Bell, who was then the County Home Demonstration Agent, called on the South Carolina State Library Board for advice and help in solving the problem of library service for the county. After a careful review of county resources, it was reluctantly concluded that a bookmobile would be prohibitive in cost. Not discouraged by this setback, the County Council of Farm Women decided to set their goal and work towards “library facilities for the county.” The help of the County Delegation was enlisted and the late Senator H.L Hester became an arch supporter of the library. In 1953 everything was ready to start public library service except for a suitable place to house it. In this emergency the County Home Demonstration Agent offered the use of her secretary’s office until more appropriate space could be found. The State Library Board STORY TELLER, FRANKIE ADKINS, ENTERTAINS McCORMICK’S DAR! by BARBARA BURLESON THE DAUGHTERS OF the American Revolution (DAR) met on Thursday, April 20, 2023 at the McCormick County Library. Our guest speaker was Frankie Adkins. Frankie Adkins is a native West Virginian who grew up in Coastal North Carolina and spent most of her adult life in Charleston. She lives in Honea Path with her husband and their Tortoiseshell cat, Embers. A National Board Certified Teacher, Frankie retired from a career as a Library Media Specialist in South Carolina Public Schools and Librarian at Forrest Junior College. She graduated from East Carolina University with a B.S. in Library Science and earned her Master of Librarianship from the University of South Carolina. Frankie began her storytelling career by getting her “Storyteller Badge” in Girl Scouts. She tells American stories, ghost stories, Appalachian Folklore, and was delighted to tell our chapter about South Carolina's “Heritage Horse.” The Marsh Tacky Horse is a unique strain/breed of Colonial Spanish Horse found only in South Carolina and is the most endangered horse breed in the world. There are only about 400 Marsh Tacky Horses in existence today. Marsh Tacky Horses have a unique gait, called Swamp Fox Trot and are also known for their calm temperament. We thoroughly enjoyed her presentation that provided us with some very interesting information. made a large deposit of books to serve as a nucleus for the new library’s book collection. Mrs. B. H. Langley was appointed first custodian of the library. Substantial gifts of books were received from many interested McCormick citizens. In 1954 the library began to receive a direct appropriation from county council. In 1970 a much larger area in the county office building was completely renovated and furnished as the headquarters of the McCormick County Library. By the late 1990s the library collection had outgrown this space. Additionally, new space was needed for more public computers with access to the internet. Librarian, Dianne Purdy, organized the effort that led to the construction of a new building in 2004. This 8,000 square-foot building added a local history room, a large public meeting room, and space for 17 public computers among many other improvements. In 2011, the library added a park and playground adjacent to this building. Paul Brown is the current Library Director. Current Library Board members are: Verda Musier, Chair; Marion Sturkey, Vice Chair; Glenda Sartain, Secretary; Geraldine Ware, Mary Anne Linsenmayer and Greg Burkes. Former Librarians were: Mrs. D. OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CLUB ROD & GUN CLUB SLV’s Rod and Gun Club Holds Annual Bowling Pin Shoot by JOE CRANE ON SATURDAY, APRIL 29th, The Rod and Gun Club held their Annual Bowling Pin Shoot. The competitive event was arranged and presided over by Len Azzarano. We had perfect weather, with a crowd of about 40, including 20 shooters, in attendance. All semi-automatic pistol and revolver calibers were eligible for the competition. Targets were engaged, one shooter at a time. Five pins were set on a table 21 feet in the distance, and seven shots were allowed to clear the pins from the table. Scoring was by points, one for each pin off the table with a maximum of seven for all five pins removed by five shots. Len promised a surprise for our .22 caliber shooters which came by way of smaller targets in the form of bowling pin heads only. They were clean, bright and shiny, but not much bigger than a small tin can. Not many of these hit the dirt! Dwaine Wright, with a perfect 7, took first place and the coveted Golden Bowling Pin Trophy. Gary LaPlant secured 2nd place with a 5. Frank Meuborn and Pat Wakefield tied for third with scores of 4 each. Len noted: Lots of pins were hit in testimony to everyone’s accuracy, but many of those refused to fall off the table. Thanks to Curtiss Wakefield for help at the shoot. Outdoor Adventure Club North Augusta Greeneway Bike Ride by MIKE VERKEYN EIGHTEEN OAC MEMBERS gathered together on Saturday, April 22nd to bike ride the North Augusta Greeneway Trail. What started out as a gloomy morning later turned out to be a wonderful afternoon for the ride. The group met at the Food Lion parking lot and drove to the Riverview Park where we readied our bikes and gear. The bikers then rode the 11 mile, paved, Rails-to-Trails Path, that took us through the beautiful wooded right-of-way seeing birds, deer and other wildlife along the way. The group also ventured out on the Hammond’s Ferry Loop of the trail with a ride along the Savannah River. We ultimately ended up at the Butterfly Garden Pavilion where we stopped for lunch. Each participant thoroughly enjoyed the ride. We can't wait until our next OAC adventure! Outdoor Adventure Club's Kayaking Trip Down Augusta Canal, A Resounding Success by JUDY LORIER photos by Linda McClintock TWENTY-THREE MEMBERS of the Savannah Lakes Outdoor Adventure Club had the pleasure of kayaking down the Augusta Canal on Saturday, May 27, 2023. The event had been rescheduled from the previous week due to inclement weather. May 27th was a perfect day for the trip – – pleasant temperatures, sunshine, gentle, breezes, and calm waters. We started with a picnic at the Savannah River Rapids Park, and then headed out onto the water. The vegetation is beautiful this time of year! We could all see why the wildlife chose this area in which to live. The turtles (we saw so many) were settled on their logs enjoying the sun. They are used to visitors, so they barely moved. I think they knew we wouldn’t be staying to invade their privacy. It was a good time to make new friends as the paddle was very leisurely. We all had a great time. GOLF WGA Member Member Tournament was “Fifty Shades of GREEN” by MELISSA CARLSON DURING THE LAST week of April, the Women’s Golf Association of Savannah Lakes Village held their annual Member Member Tournament. The two-day event, which featured both 18 hole and 9 hole divisions, had a total of 60 competitors. The event consisted of a scramble at Monticello Golf Course and alternate shot at Tara Golf Course. The tournament theme this year was “Fifty Shades of GREEN” which led to very creative outfits and innovative cart decorations. This event is always a favorite with players due to all of the games played on the course. The challenges ranged from closest to the pin to teeing off the top of water bottles. There were definitely plenty of laughs. But of course, events like this don’t happen by themselves. The tournament committee would like to thank all the volunteers who came out and contributed. O N SATURDAY, APRIL 22nd, the McCormick County Republican Party held their First Annual Golf Tournament at the McCormick Country Club. The day was almost perfect by tee time, when 14 teams hit the course with a shot-gun start. In the end, John Crist, Danny Hozey, Ken Dutton and Jim Lamb (with an eagle on hole nine) took First Place. Second Place went to Nick Weaver, Sue Weaver, Pat Martin and Tom Kuclo and Third Place was taken by Jake Trantham, Yuni Flakes, Keith Trantham and John Riley. The Longest Drive was made by Jim Coleman and Closest to the Pin was placed by Kane Ferguson. Once the tournament ended the fun continued as non-golfers joined the festivities with a game of horseshoes or corn toss. John and Beth McCullough prepared a delicious BBQ buffet, which was enjoyed by all. Sheriff Clarke Stearns, Probate Judge John Gray and Senator Shane Massey spoke briefly to the crowd of well over 125 attendees. Our Silent Auction included wonderful, donated items by local artists, members and area businesses. Unique items such as themed gift baskets (golf, spa, movie, kids and wine) handcrafted silver earrings, original paintings, political memorabilia and more went to the highest bidder. Three special items of interest were Tours of the Capitol and Lunch with each of our state legislators. The McCormick Republican Party would like to thank our Gold Sponsor, Southeast Utilities of GA (SEU) and our Bronze Sponsor, Lee Builders for their support. TENNIS / PICKLEBALL COMMITTEE TWO WOMEN’S TENNIS teams will be representing Savannah Lakes Village at the South Carolina USTA State Tennis Tournament on Hilton Head Island. SLV’S 3.0 Women’s Team, captained by Terri Reynolds and Beth Weik, clinched the local league championship winning all of their matches during the season. Team members are: Kathy Capitani, Vicky Colon, Glynda Frazier, Mary Fuchs, Cindy Peterson, Kim Petruska, Terri Reynolds, Rose Tracy, and Beth Weik. The excitement among the team members and supporters has grown throughout the season. This will be the first time participating in the South Carolina State Tournament for several of the team members. For more seasoned players, coming together as a team has been fun as the team’s confidence grows. SLV’s 3.5 Women’s Team, captained by Ann Fago, will also be at the State Tournament. This team earned their spot at the League Championship level by winning and losing some very challenging matches. Coming out on top at the end of the season is exciting for these very seasoned players. Team members are: Fran Castle, Ann Fago, Kathie Kase, Guinn Lane, Marsha Lusby, Lana Snellgrove, Linda Vanderford, Sue Watson, and Chris Webster. Attending the State Tournament and representing SLV is an honor for any tennis player here in the Village. Playing with team members and being on a tennis court with challenging opponents from across South Carolina is a special experience for each player. Just having a fun weekend with good friends is an added bonus for sure. The goal for each team is to play good tennis and come home with a number of victories to celebrate, including perhaps a State Championship! TWO WOMEN’S TENNIS TEAMS TO REPRESENT SLV at USTA STATE TOURNAMENT! by LANA SNELLGROVE APRIL WAS A fun and busy month for the SLV Pickleball Community and the Blazing Paddles Pickleball Club. We strive to provide fun and competitive experiences for the community, and April was all of that. Events included the exciting completion of the Men’s Ladder League Spring Season, an awesome Ladies 70+ tournament, a wicked fun Disc Golf Outing, and interclub events with Aiken and Augusta. We look forward to providing many more opportunities in the coming months. Men’s Ladder League Division Champions decided on the final day! The Men’s 2023 Spring Ladder League season completed play on May 31st which turned out to be beautiful. All three division races were decided on the last day. The play was fun, and the competition was spirited. Congratulations to the following Division Champions: LIONS: Tim Camden TIGERS: Bryan Connor BEARS (Oh My): Greg Sullivan Special thanks to all the subs who helped keep the play going throughout the season, especially super subs Jerry Miller and Bob Massie. Your support is greatly appreciated. We are looking forward to resuming play in the fall. Ladies Ladder League still battling it out… The Ladies had not completed their spring Ladder League season at the time this article was submitted. I will report on those results next month. Suffice to say that the ladies are having a great time and it has been a joy to watch them. Our thanks to Linda Dodd and Kim Swigart for doing a great job running the league. Pickleball Club sponsors a wicked fun Disc Golf Outing! On Monday, April 17th, the Blazing Paddles Pickleball Club had our first Disc Golf outing at the beautiful Little River Disc Golf Course in McCormick. About 25 people participated in the fun event. The event started off with technique instructions from Bill Rohrey, owner and operator of the Little River Disc Golf Course. We then split up into 3 groups and played the 18-hole course. Suffice to say, no course records were set that day, but we did have a lot of fun. WARNING! If you ever play with Rose Connor, be sure to hide behind a tree when she is throwing (LOL!) We hope to make this a regular event. A big thanks to Bill for his excellent instructions, and for his witty commentary throughout the day. Also, special thanks to our Events team for making this such a fun event. Ladies 70+ Pickleball Tournament was awesome! On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, April 15th, we had our first annual Ladies 70+ Pickleball Tournament. The tournament was a lot of fun, and was a great success. Congratulations to the following teams: Gold Medal: Linda Dodd and Judy Sullivan Silver Medal: Betty Dodge and Judy Greiger Bronze Medal: Janet Coulthart and Kathie Kase Thanks to all the players, volunteers, and spectators. Your support is greatly appreciated. Mini-Scramble with Aiken On Thursday, April 13th, 8 members of the Pickleball Club travelled to Aiken to participate in the 2nd SLV/Aiken Mini-Scramble Challenge. The event was established last year as a way to foster friendships and competition between the 2 communities. We had many fun and competitive games in Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. After the match the SLV team went out to dinner and had a great time. We look forward to hosting the Aiken team in the fall. 2nd Senior Bowl Challenge vs. Augusta On Friday, April 28th, 8 members of the Pickleball Club travelled to the Abilene Baptist Church Christian Life Center to participate in the 2nd SLV/Augusta Senior Bowl Challenge. The inaugural event was played last December, with Augusta winning 19 of 24 matches and bringing home the Senior Bowl Trophy. This time we did better, winning 8 games and tying 1. However, Augusta won 15 games, and retained possession of the trophy… for now. We concluded the event with a nice awards ceremony. Both teams then went out to lunch. We look forward to hosting the Augusta team in the fall, and keeping the Trophy at SLV!!! Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?” These verses are often read during a funeral service. They remind us that God has set aside a place for each of us, individually, where we can go home to Him. We are loved. We belong. We abide. Many are going through life changing transitions. These are the big shifts that can have us feeling a multitude of emotions with overwhelming options. Yet, these are the moments God gives us to practice our faith. It is here, in the unknown future that we can look back to our bibles and rest in the presence of Scripture. Not letting our hearts be troubled is often easier said than done. Jesus says we can find a trouble free heart by believing in God and believing in Him. It would seem Christians would live trouble free lives. If trouble free hearts gave us tell tale signs of who was actively Christian and who was not, we could use this as an indicator that a life not going well, could use a little more faith to get back on track. Yet, there are many people who are very faithful and find themselves with a troubled heart. Instead, I believe, we are being asked to look at where we are placing our focus. Are we placing our focus on the trouble? If we focus on the trouble in our lives it will certainly dishearten us. Jesus says there are many places we can find ourselves dwelling. He invites us to go to that place in our hearts that Christ has prepared for us. We are to believe in God, believe in Christ, and to rest in knowing we have a place prepared for us in our Father’s house. When you find yourself going through the life changing moments, the big shifts, or are overwhelmed with emotions, take a moment to find that place in the world where you dwell in God’s peace. There are many dwelling places: go fishing, take a walk, go to church, journal, bake, call a friend, volunteer or watch the sun set. Find your place that the Father has prepared for you. You will know it when you find it because you will realize that it is here that your heart is not troubled. As I practice my faith through my big shifts and life changing transitions, I am reminded to rest in the presence of Scripture among my new dwelling place of McCormick, South Carolina. Please take some time today, with gratitude, to enjoy this beautiful place you call home and let our hearts rest and not be troubled. Amen. MY NAME IS Thor and as you may recall, I was named for the Norse god of Thunder and Lightning, known for his strength and the protection of mankind. I am still here, still waiting for my forever home. I know I might not be the best looking doggie on the block. I’m not a fluffy golden dog with long floppy ears or an adorable tiny bundle of joy that you can carry around in a purse. Some may say I have a “gangsta” look about me, but don’t let my looks deceive you - I’m really a big mush. I’m known around the shelter as a “sweet boy.” I can be a bit shy with strangers but I am as friendly as they come once we get acquainted. I would prefer to be your one and only, but I’m ok meeting polite dogs. I love car rides, going for long walks and being challenged with food puzzles. I know how to sit, lay down and shake paws. I enjoy chasing ducks, or a long nap on a comfy couch in an air conditioned room. My birthday is 6/23/2018, I’m a fit 66 pounds and a terrier mix. I’ve had all my shots, have been neutered and microchipped. I am indeed a sweet boy, who would love to spend my life watching over a special someone and always keeping them safe – and of course feeling loved. MY NAME IS GIZZY and I am a 50-pound cuddle bug. The betting pool has me pegged as a terrier/boxer mix, but if you want to cash in on that you’ll have to spring for a “Doggie” DNA Test. One thing that’s a sure bet is that you may feel free to give me lots of belly rubs and snuggles. You may also count on me to enjoy a tasty treat or two – or three! I enjoy going on walks and stopping to smell the roses…and that half eaten subway sandwich…and that dirty sock! Life is short – smell it all! I feel pretty relaxed around most other pups, but if we are to be roomies, I might need a bit more time to get acquainted. I’m sure it will be clear sailing after we do! My birthday is 4/24/2018. I am a handsome boy with striking hazel eyes, have been neutered, vaccinated and even microchipped. The only thing left on my “to do” list is to find a loving home with a comfy bed indoors to call my own.
