Church Newsletter March 2024

2 Pastor Reginald Woullard Teaching, Preaching and Serving Shady Grove Since 2005. This Month We Acknowledge and Celebrate Nineteen Years of Faithful Leadership. Rev. Dr. Reginald Woullard is the youngest son born to the late Rev. Dr. R. W. Woullard Jr. and the late Mrs. Annette Woullard. He is a graduate of Hattiesburg Public Schools. Using his God-given talent, he attended the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) on a football scholarship where he was a fouryear letterman. His athletic prowess at Ole Miss led to his signing as a free agent with the New Orleans Saints in 1980. After returning home, he attended and graduated from William Carey University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He broadened the scope of his education with further studies at the University of Southern Mississippi. He served in the field of education as a teacher and coach for over 20 years before retiring in 2007. Rev. Dr. Woullard entered the ministry in 1989 under the tutelage and nurturing of his father, the Rev. Dr. R.W. Woullard Jr. Pastor Woullard accepted God’s call on his life. He was licensed and ordained by his father as a fourth generation minister. Pastor followed in his father’s footsteps and became the illustrious pastor of the Shady Grove Baptist Church in the Eastabuchie community. Before coming to Shady Grove, Pastor Woullard’s other pastoral assignments included the following churches; Mary Magdalene Baptist Church of Eatonville, Good Hope Baptist Church of New Augusta, and Antioch Baptist Church of Hattiesburg. Rev. Dr. Woullard received his Bachelor of Theology degree from Mississippi Baptist Seminary and did additional studies at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is a graduate of the Harvard Divinity School Summer Leadership Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In May 2007, he received his Master of Theology and his Doctorate of Theology degrees from the New Foundation Theological Seminary. God has equipped and is using Pastor Woullard to carry Shady Grove to the next level. In 2014, the Rev. Dr. R.W. Woullard Jr. Family Life Center was open to accommodate and serve our growing congregation. A webcast of both church services can be seen each Sunday. A band, Youth Choir, and the addition of a transportation ministry were added so members could be served on every level. Both the 7:45 am and the 10:45 am worship services have shown astonishing growth. In the first two years under Pastor’s Woullard’s leadership, our membership more than doubled. Additional staff and services were added to handle the phenomenal expansion of our congregation. God has blessed us abundantly in both the numerical and financial realms. He is the visionary and architect of numerous new ministries at Shady Grove Baptist Church, which are designed to take the church to the next level. A youth minister and a ministry coordinator were added to the staff. We continue to be astounded and grateful for the expansive growth we have seen in our people resources, our physical resources, our financial resources, and our real estate resources, under Pastor Woullard’s leadership. We thank God for the global growth we have seen via our webcasting. Our reach has been expanded on a world-wide basis and we consider this our newest avenue for fulfilling the Great Commission and the Great Commandment. New outreach programs are being added to reach the unsaved and to offer them the only alternative – Jesus Christ. Under Pastor Woullard’s leadership, Shady Grove adopted Monrovia, Liberia which included visiting and ministering in this West Africa country, digging wells for drinking water, bringing Bibles, medical supplies, clothing, remodeling and enlarging several churches and orphanages. Pastor Woullard is known for the creed he lives by: “The grass withereth, and the flower fadeth: but the Word of God shall stand forever.” (Isaiah 40:8) He and his lovely wife, First Lady Joyce have four children, Dan’yelle, Reginald Jr., Isaiah and Cameron; and one granddaughter, Laila.

6 WORDS OF APPRECIATION TO OUR PASTOR Pastoring a church is one of the most meticulous responsibilities in the body of Christ. Pastors work tirelessly to support their congregation. They are charged with the responsibility of organizing and conducting church services. They also carry out programs like weddings, speak at funerals, and offer counseling sessions, hospital visits, baptisms and much more. The least we can do is to send words of appreciation to our pastor to appreciate their efforts. Appreciating our pastors is important. It gives them a feeling of fulfilment and re-energizes them to do more. Taking time to send words of appreciation to our pastor tells him how grateful we are for their hard work. Legitimate pastors fully commit and sacrifice themselves in serving God and others, nearly not asking for a reward in return. They usher their congregations towards God's blessings. Pastors also pray with their followers during jubilations and in times of need. They counsel people through life challenges and help confront their agitations. Pastors are human beings with limited energy, time, and strength, like us. They also have low moments and problems affecting their faith. Words of Love to our Pastor: To my precious and loving pastor, you have done well in my life. The Lord has mightily used you to bring me this far. I want to sincerely say thank you for your efforts over me. God bless you mightily. How will I forget how God connected me to you to be blessed by your ministry? I’m a product of the anointing of God upon you. Your anointing shall not run dry. The Lord has used you to start a great work in my life that hasn’t stopped since you began it. I will forever be mindful of your selfless contribution to my life. God keeps blessing you to be a blessing to us. I appreciate your help and support in the good and bad times I have experienced in my life. May the rain of God’s blessings continue to fall on you. It is an honorable thing to be pastored by a man who genuinely loves the Lord and His people. I’m grateful for having you as part of my life. The grace of God shall abound more and more upon your life. Thank you for the heartwarming conversations that we have had, and for being there for me. I’m thankful! Your job is not an easy one. The job that you do has the power to bring a difference in the lives of many. You have really been a blessing. Thank you for everything, dear man of God. Thank you for your prayers and efforts to help us grow and develop in our walk with the Lord. You have shown us the path to go and we appreciate you forever. God’s blessings are upon you. You are not just a pastor but also a father. Your large heart is worth emulating. We keep following through. I want to thank God for the life of our dear pastor. Your dedication to the work of God and matters in our lives cannot be paid for. May God reward your labour of love. You have invested your lives into us, and it is time to say thank you. We truly appreciate your labor. The presence of God shall not depart from your life. We see all that you are doing to ensure that the work of God is going well. Thank you for the uncommon love you have shown us countless years past. May the hand of God be stronger upon you. Without you, this congregation would not have reached these heights. You have been a supportive structure to us. Thank you. Your presence blesses all of us who have been with you on a day-to-day basis. You are serving God in a beautiful and worthy way. 18th Year Pastoral Appreciation 15 What is the True Meaning of Easter? Why is it Celebrated? CHRISTIAN MEANING OF EASTER The significance of Easter is Jesus Christ's triumph over death. His resurrection means the eternal life that is granted to all who believe in Him. The purpose of Easter also means the full confirmation of all that Jesus taught and preached during His three-year ministry. If He had not risen from the dead or simply died and not been resurrected, He would have been thought of as just another teacher or prophet. However, His resurrection rebuked all that and provided final and undeniable proof that He was the Son of God and that He had overcome death once and for all. The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is the core of the Christian gospel. Saint Paul says that if Christ is not raised from the dead, then our preaching and hope are in vain (1 Cor. 15:14). Certainly, without the resurrection, there would be no Christian preaching or faith. The apostles of Christ would have continued as the disheartened group, which the Gospel of John depicts as being in hiding for fear of the Jews. They were in total despair until they met the risen Christ (John 20:19). Then they touched Christ's wounds of the nails and the spear; they ate and drank with Him. The resurrection became the foundation of everything they said and did (Acts 2-4): “...for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have” (Luke 24:39). The resurrection affirms Jesus of Nazareth as the prophesied Messiah of Israel and the King and Lord of a new Jerusalem: a new heaven and a new earth. PAGAN ORIGINS OF 'EASTER' The celebration of Easter does have some connections to pre-Christian, pagan traditions, particularly in the symbolism associated with spring and fertility. The timing of Easter, for example, coincides with the arrival of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Many ancient cultures celebrated the arrival of spring as a time of renewal, growth, and fertility. One notable pagan festival that shares some similarities with Easter is the festival of Eostre or Ostara. Eostre was a pagan goddess associated with spring and fertility, and her festival was celebrated around the vernal equinox. Some scholars suggest that the name “Easter” may have been derived from Eostre. Additionally, certain symbols and customs associated with Easter, such as eggs and rabbits, have roots in pagan traditions. Eggs, for example, were often used as symbols of fertility and rebirth in various ancient cultures. While there are pagan influences on the symbols and timing of Easter, the Christian celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ remains the central and primary focus of the holiday for Christians. Over time, as Christianity spread and absorbed local customs, some of these traditions became intertwined with the Easter celebration. It’s important to note that the religious significance of Easter for Christians centers on the resurrection narrative from the New Testament. PRAYER FOR EASTER Almighty God, who through thine only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ has overcome death and opened unto us the gate of everlasting life. Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord’s Resurrection may be raised from the death of sin by thy life-giving Spirit; through the same Jesus Christ, Our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the same Spirit ever, one God, world without end. Amen: Book of Common Prayer Christ is Risen: The world below lies desolate Christ is Risen: The spirits of evil are fallen Christ is Risen: The angels of God are rejoicing Christ is Risen: The tombs of the dead are empty Christ is Risen indeed from the dead, Glory and power are His forever and ever.
