2022 CHURCH THEME: “HOLD ON, HELP IS ON THE WAY!” MATTHEW 15:25 DISCIPLESHIP VS. MENTORSHIP: HOW THEY DIFFER & ARE SIMILAR 101 WARREN MOTT PARKWAY * HATTIESBURG, MS 39401 * 601-583-9243 EMAIL: [email protected] WEBSITE: WWW.SHADYGROVE-CHURCH.ORG August 2023 Volume 4 Edition 8 The Purpose Behind Discipleship People talk a lot about discipleship in the church, but what’s the purpose behind it? The purpose behind discipleship is to help Christians live out their faith and then they can share the gospel with others and eventually disciple those people as well. The goal is to lead others to become more like Jesus. We are not supposed to keep our faith to ourselves. Jesus says in Matthew 28:19–20, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” The Purpose Behind Mentorship Mentoring is a Biblical tool used to help followers of Jesus through challenging situations or simply life in general. The purpose of being mentored is to have a wiser believer be able to help guide you in your life. They are a safe person you can confess sins to and be honest with about your struggles. They are a person who can speak truth from God to you and encourage you. Along with being a person to listen to you. Directing vs. Listening One of the differences between mentorship and discipleship is directing versus listening. With discipleship, either you are being directed or you are helping to disciple and direct a new believer. Whereas, a mentor is someone who listens to you. They most likely will not tell you directly what to do but they may help guide you in a Biblical way and listen to you and pray with you. They would call you out if you were acting in a sinful way and denying it. Similarities Between Discipleship and Mentorship Both discipleship and mentorship provide understanding as to what areas the person can grow it. Discipleship shows the person where they need to grow spiritually and mentorship shows a variety of growth: spiritually, emotionally, relationally, and so on. Both mentorship and discipleship have a role in Christians life. Even though mentorship and discipleship are different in many ways both are important in the life of a Christian. Without discipleship, our faith can easily stay in the same place and we will not push ourselves to grow and share the Gospel to others. Without mentorship, we can be struggling with sin or be in a hard situation and not have someone to walk us through it and be a safe place to speak about hard topics. Both discipleship and mentorship are valuable to the body of Christ. Excerpted from: https://justdisciple.com/discipleship-mentorship/ MENTORING AND DISCIPLESHIP REV. DR. Why is mentoring crucial? What is the outcome of mentoring? Mentoring is a relational experience where one person empowers another with their God given resources- Paul Stanley and JR Clinton. This definition that best defines mentoring says that it is a relational experience. It is not the guru-sishya relationship where the guru is a master and the sishya is a servant. Paul, who mentored Timothy, called Timothy his son in the faith. (I Tim 1:2) Elisha who followed Elijah cried out as he saw Elijah being taken up to heaven, “My father, My father.” So mentoring is a relationship within God's family that has familial bonds. It is not usually for a short time. Instead, it is one person pouring out their life and time into another. One experienced Christian guiding, encouraging, and equipping another for a lifetime. It is a relationship where one is empowering another. When Elijah was about to be taken up to heaven, Elisha, the successor, asked him for a double portion of his power. And we see that he accomplished all the tasks that God had given to Elijah on Mount Moriah. Mentors then, are giving all they have learnt from God, to the ones they mentor. God doesn’t work in short bursts and pauses. He continuously raises up successors. He gives one man a vision and sometimes the fulfillment is done by others. The tapestry of God is woven with many different threads and each follows the other without a break. Mentoring finds its role here and achieves Jesus’ commission—to make disciples teaching them to follow all his commandments. (Matt 28:16-20) Mentoring is done with God-given resources. All that we are, and have, belongs to God. Our trainings, talents, and abilities are what we use to mentor. Paul also mentored Priscilla and Aquila. He lived with them and traveled with them. Because they also shared a profession of tentmaking they had a unique friendship. Paul passed on all his knowledge of God to them. After Paul left them they met a man, Apollos, who was lacking in some teaching but was already doing a great ministry. So this couple used the training that God gave them through the teaching of Paul and mentored him. Apollos went on to build a flourishing ministry in Achaia. The teachings were thus passed on. As Christians, no matter our age, we need people to pour into our lives. We also must pour in to others. May God show you a mentor who will sacrificially guide you and may you pour out into the lives of others all that God has given you. To God be the glory. https://www.bible.com/readingplans/15006-mentoring-and-makingdisciples/day/1 MENTORING AND MAKING DISCIPLES Follow My Example, As I Follow The Example Of Christ!

SGBC | 77 In an article “3 Important Ways Discipling is Different from Mentoring” Dana Yearly writes: Mentors bring advice and influence on those whom they offer guidance. A disciple maker, on the other hand, brings intentional spiritual investment into their disciple’s lives. I suggest to you that Jesus did both. Jesus did this for His disciples. After the call to follow Jesus, He began to teach and show them the ways of His Father. In John 13:1-6, “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.” He showed them how to love God’s way with the understanding that a servant is not greater than their master. Jesus is under God the Father and the disciples were under Him. Mentorship is also vital to Christian discipleship. Jesus was not motivated by ambition, self-promotion, selfimportance, or selfglorification in his mentoring relationships. His pleasure was in helping others and watching his disciples grow in their capacity as leaders. (Luke 10:17–20) “Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” He made them fishers of men. So where are we standing in our mentoring and discipling? Who can we account for that we have mentored and discipled for Jesus’ sake? Think about leaving this legacy. Let us follow Jesus for He knows the way and will teach us the Father’s ways of doing life. Amen Let’s Pray: Father God Thank You for teaching and showing us your ways through Your Son Jesus. We will try our best to be more like Him with Your help. In Jesus’ Name. Amen! And it is so. Humbly submitted by Rev. Cathy Ross -Woulard MENTORING AND DISCIPLING Encouragement for August
