18th Year Pastoral Appreciation 2 Pastor Reginald Woullard Teaching, Preaching and Serving Shady Grove Since 2005. This Month We Acknowledge and Celebrate Eighteen Years of Faithful Leadership. Rev. Dr. Reginald Woullard was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to the late Rev. Dr. R. W. Woullard, Jr. and the late Mrs. Annette Woullard. After graduating from Hattiesburg Public Schools, where he received his formal education, he attended the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) on a football scholarship where he was a four-year letterman. His athletic prowess at Ole Miss led to his signing on as a free agent with the New Orleans Saints in 1980. He graduated from William Carey University with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He broadened the scope of his education with further studies at the University of Southern Mississippi. He served in the field of education as a teacher/coach for over 20 years before his retirement in 2007. Rev. Dr. Woullard entered the ministry in 1989 under the tutelage and nurturing of his father, the Rev. Dr. R.W. Woullard Jr. After accepting God’s call, Pastor Woullard was licensed and ordained by his father as a fourth generation minister. A little over 20 years later, he was called to follow in his father’s footsteps as the illustrious pastor of the Shady Grove Baptist Church in Eastabuchie, Mississippi. Prior to Shady Grove, Pastor Woullard’s other pastoral assignments included the following churches; Mary Magdalene Baptist Church of Eatonville, Good Hope Baptist Church of New Augusta, and Antioch Baptist Church of Hattiesburg. Pastor Woullard received a Bachelor of Theology from Mississippi Baptist Seminary and did additional studies at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is a graduate of the Harvard Divinity School Summer Leadership Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In May 2007, he received his Master of Theology and his Doctorate of Theology from the New Foundation Theological Seminary. Pastor Woullard completed a course of study in the proclamation of the Christian gospel entitled “Proclaimers Place” under Dr. Joel Gregory, a Distinguished Fellow. He attended this four-day intensive tutorial study which placed special emphases upon textual exegesis, hermeneutics, and homiletics at Regent’s Park College, Oxford University in Oxford, England. He is relentless in his community involvement. His past and present accomplishments are numerous. He is passionate about his fight for the underprivileged and the unsaved. His vision for outreach to the community-at-large is being realized through witnessing opportunities in various neighborhoods in both Forrest, Jones and surrounding counties. Under his leadership, the church has shown phenomenal growth both in membership and finances. He is the visionary and architect of many new ministries at Shady Grove Baptist Church which are designed to take the church to the next level. A youth minister and a ministry coordinator have been added to the staff. We continue to be astounded and grateful for the expansive growth we have seen in our people resources, our physical resources, our financial resources, and our real estate resources under Pastor Woullard’s leadership. We thank God for the global growth we have seen via our webcasting. Our reach has been expanded on a world-wide basis and we consider this our newest avenue for fulfilling the Great Commission and the Great Commandment. New outreach programs are being added to reach the unsaved and to offer them the only alternative – Jesus Christ. Under Pastor Woullard’s leadership, Shady Grove adopted Monrovia, Liberia which included visiting and ministering in this West African country, digging wells for drinking water, bringing Bibles, medical supplies and clothing. Pastor Woullard is known for the creed he lives by: “The grass withereth, and the flower fadeth: but the Word of God shall stand forever. (Isaiah 40:8) He and his lovely wife Joyce have four children, Dan’yelle, Reginald Jr., Isaiah, and Cameron; and one granddaughter, Laila. (Submitted by Maxine Coleman |Excerpted from summitseating)
18th Year Pastoral Appreciation 3 THE WOULLARDS THROUGH THE YEARS
18th Year Pastoral Appreciation 4 Shady Grove is proud to announce the 18th Year Anniversary Service to celebrate Rev. Dr. Reginald and First Lady Joyce Woullard is Sunday, March 19th at 10:45 am. In the NIV Bible, Romans 10:14 says, How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? God sent Pastor Woullard and his family to Shady Grove 18 years ago and he has been continuously preaching and teaching the Word of God. Rev. Dr. A.G. McSwain Jr. will join us as our guest speaker. Rev. McSwain is the pastor of Morning Star Baptist Church in Laurel, Mississippi. Please plan to attend and bring someone with you. We will have one service only (10:45) as we celebrate Pastor, First Lady and their family. Rev. Dr. A.G. McSwain Jr. 1. They’re following an incredible calling to care for the souls of people (Heb 13:17). There’s a weightiness to that calling that’s hard to describe—and most pastors I know fulfill that calling with faithfulness and joy. 2. Their work is never fully done. Even when they go home at night, they’re still on call at some level. Crises seldom happen according to our schedules. 3. They shoulder burdens few people know. In fact, they sometimes must carry them alone, and they often weep more over the sin of congregation members than those members do over their own sin. 4. They do much of their work “behind the scenes.” We see them publicly when they preach, but that assignment isn’t the bulk of their work. Many are the hours they spend preparing sermons, visiting the sick, evangelizing the lost, counseling the hurting, and raising up leaders. 5. They work hard at balancing their personal and family time with congregational time. Not all pastors find this balance well—and their family often pays a price—but most pastors I know strive to do this task with diligence. 6. They bear the responsibility of preaching the Word. That work requires seeking God’s face, exegeting and interpreting the Word, crafting a sermon, and delivering it. No pastor wants to misinterpret or mis-teach the Word; thus, their burden is great. 7. They must deal with critique and criticism. Sometimes it’s warranted, but often it’s not. Many pastors could write a book on the surprising, odd, often nitpicky criticisms they’ve received. Yet, most pastors I know hear them with grace. 8. They share all of life with their parishioners. Not even a family physician shares all of life – birth, conversion, baptism, graduation, marriage, parenthood, death, and every major struggle and celebration between birth and death. Only pastors have that privilege, and I greatly appreciate their investment in our lives. https://chucklawless.com/2019/10/8-reasons-i-most-appreciate-pastors/ 8 REASONS TO APPRECIATE PASTORS A LOOK AT THE APPRECIATION SERVICE PASTOR’S ANNIVERSARY LOVE OFFER All members are asked to give a $25.00 love offering for the Pastor’s Anniversary. Please check the Pastor’s Anniversary box on your tithe envelope to direct your gift to Pastor and First Lady.
18th Year Pastoral Appreciation 5 When someone begins to talk or write about the organization of the church, eyes often begin to glaze over and attention wanders. Church organization is not thought to be the most practical or ministry-minded topic. After all, who is excited to learn about committee structures or meeting minutes? But the reality is that the organization of the church is a means that King Jesus uses to disciple His people and to bring the gospel to a lost and needy world. When Christ ascended into heaven, He did not leave His children as orphans (John 14:18); rather, He established a structure by which the Holy Spirit would work through men to build up the church. This involves the calling, equipping, and ordaining of pastors (Eph. 4:11), elders (Acts 14:23; Titus 1:5), and deacons (Acts 6) in the church. The Lord Jesus Christ commissioned His church to bring the gospel of grace to the world (Matt. 28:18– 20) and the path of every Christian culminates in the corporate worship of God for all eternity (Rev. 21). Thus, we need the gifts that Jesus has given to the church, including pastors and teachers, to fulfill this mission. There are three main reasons why we need pastors: first, pastors bring us the Word of God; second, pastors encourage us in our walk with Christ; and third, pastors equip us to do ministry. It should not surprise us that each of these needs corresponds to a provision from Christ. PASTORS BRING US THE WORD OF GOD The first and most important reason we need pastors is because Christ has commanded them to be heralds of the Word of God. It is foundational to the office of pastor to deliver, expound, and explain God’s Word to His people. This task is so foundational that it is common to refer to a pastor as “preacher.” PASTORS ENCOURAGE US IN OUR WALK WITH CHRIST The second reason we need pastors is that they are given to help us in our Christian walk. In the Bible Tychicus is described by Paul as a “beloved brother and faithful minister” (Eph. 6:21). Paul sent Tychicus to the church in Ephesus and the church in Colossae for this reason: to “encourage your hearts” (Eph. 6:22; Col. 4:8). Paul knew that believers need more than to be taught the Word of truth; they need to be reminded that the Lord loves them and has provided for them. In this sense, pastors are a gift from Jesus to His people (Eph. 4:8–11). They are a tangible reminder of Jesus’ care for us in a world that is marred by sin. Are you comforted to know that your pastor is praying for you, your family, and your particular needs? Just as Paul reminded each of the churches to which he wrote that he was remembering them (Phil. 1:3), never ceasing to pray for them (Col. 1:9), and thanking the Lord that their faith was growing (2 Thess. 1:3), so the calling of a pastor is to walk alongside God’s people and lift their eyes to Christ. PASTORS EQUIP US TO DO THE WORK OF MINISTRY The final reason we need pastors is so that we may be trained and prepared to do the work of ministry, building up the body of Christ (Eph. 4:12). It is far too often the mind-set of Christians that pastors are the “professional” Christians; that is, the ones who must do all the work of ministry in the local church and community. The equipping of all Christians to be involved in ministry is no accident or even a pragmatic response to a pressing need. It is the design of Jesus Christ for His church. In Ephesians 4, the central passage about the gifts that Christ gives to the church, Paul writes that Christ has given shepherds (pastors) “to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” (Eph. 4:12). Pastors are an important part of the church of Jesus Christ, not because they are the only ones connected to the Lord and able to do all the work of ministry, but because they are a gift from Jesus to equip His people to grow in their knowledge of God and in their usefulness in His Kingdom. 18th Year Pastoral Appreciation 6 Expressions of Appreciation Thank God for Pastor and Sister Woullard just as Jeremiah 3:15 says, "I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding." Only God can put the right people in place at the time they are supposed to be there. God always has a plan for his people, and God puts people in place to lead his people, and that would be Pastor Reginald Woullard Sr. and Sister Joyce Woullard. We appreciate you both for 18 years of service, to God be the glory. Amen Rev. Gregory Keyes, Ministry Leader ADULT MEN’S BIBLE STUDY Pastor, thank you for being such a great example of living a life of faith. You make a difference not only in our church but also our community. You encourage us to reach outside the church walls to show people the love of Christ. You teach us according to God’s Word, and for this we are grateful. Lady Joyce, we thank God for you. We know you walk alongside our Pastor, but you do so much more than have his back. You teach, you call and encourage us and you work alongside us. Thank you for encouraging him as he leads and guides us in what God would have us to do. It is our prayer that God will continue to bless you and your family for another 18 years and beyond. Maxine Coleman on behalf of the ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF It has been said that when an opportunity presents itself, we must do what is good for everyone, especially for the family of believers (Galatians 6:10). 18th Year Pastoral Appreciation 11 As we celebrate our Pastor, I encourage you all to follow the scriptures of the bible that we are not caught in the wrong when considering his leadership and suffering for the body of Christ at SGBC. Hebrews 13:17 (ESV) tells us to, obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. Jeremiah 3:15 tells us, And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding. God Our Father sent him to us. 1 Timothy 5:17 tells us to, Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. Question, is that what we are getting? Paul said, I Thess. 5:12-13, We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. Let us always remember to keep this in mind and then do it. 1 Timothy 4:2 instructs, Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. Does our Pastor do all this? Yes!!! And last but not least, Hebrews 13:7 states, remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Now that we have been instructed by the word of God, let’s celebrate our Pastor and First Lady BIG in Jesus Name. Let us learn to honor and pray for our Pastor. He needs our sincere and fervent prayers to help him do the work that he is called to do, building the Kingdom of God always. Prayer: Father God teach us your ways concerning our Pastor. How to pray for him, to encourage him and to respect him as he follow You. And God help us as he follows You to follow his leadership in the Lord. Thank You God in the Mighty Name of Jesus. Amen! And it is so! Sincerely submitted by Rev.
