2022 CHURCH THEME: “HOLD ON, HELP IS ON THE WAY!” MATTHEW 15:25 101 WARREN MOTT PARKWAY * HATTIESBURG, MS 39401 * 601-583-9243 EMAIL: [email protected] WEBSITE: WWW.SHADYGROVE-CHURCH.ORG October 2023 Volume 4 Edition 10 THE CHRISTIAN HOPE! REV. DR. REGINALD WOULLARD, PASTOR SHADY GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH 2023 CHURCH THEME: “TURN BACK TO GOD” 2 CHRONICLES 7:14 HOW CAN I KEEP ON HOPING? Whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by the endurance and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. (Roman 15:4) Let’s focus on three truths from this verse. 1. All the Scriptures are for our instruction. We are prone to short-circuit this step. All of us who have been born again are hungry to be encouraged by the Scriptures. Therefore we are often impatient with the need to be instructed by them. We would often rather have the fruit without laboring in the vineyard. So the first lesson in this verse is that the Scriptures are for instruction. Literally: for teaching. We must be willing to learn what the Scriptures teach if we expect to be encouraged by the truth of Scripture. 2. All the Scriptures are intended by God to give steadfastness and encouragement. Steadfastness means endurance. It’s what you have to have to keep on going on a path of obedience when you feel miserable and when you meet all kinds of opposition. Where does endurance come from? It comes from the Scriptures. This is exceedingly practical! Again and again the Scriptures will give you God’s perspective on things, and that biblical perspective will make a hard situation endurable. The Scriptures are given to us for our encouragement and our endurance in hard times. If you want to have staying power, if you want to endure to the end on the path of costly obedience, then turn off the radio and meditate on the Scriptures. 3. All the Scriptures have this goal: to sustain our hope. There are stories of endurance in the Scriptures. There are words of encouragement. But the way these stories and these words actually make a difference in our lives is by sustaining our hope. It’s hope that keeps us going in tough situations. Christian endurance is not just teeth gritting will power against all odds. We are driven and sustained by hope. During these times the Word of God becomes absolutely essential; because your own feelings and all the wisdom of the world is going to tell you again and again, “it isn’t worth it.” That’s what your feelings will often say, and that is what the world will often say. But it is NOT what the Scriptures say. The Scriptures say, “There is no one who has ever left house or brother or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time . . . with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. (Mark 10:29–30) Obedience is always worth it. The battle to cope can only be fought with the weapon of hope. The biblical definition of hope is “confident expectation.” Hope is a firm assurance regarding things that are unclear and unknown (Romans 8:24- 25; Hebrews 11:1, 7). Hope is a fundamental component of the life of the righteous (Proverbs 23:18). Without hope, life loses its meaning (Lamentations 3:18; Job 7:6) and in death there is no hope (Isaiah 38:18; Job 17:15). The righteous who trust or put their hope in God will be helped (Psalm 28:7), and they will not be confounded, put to shame, or disappointed (Isaiah 49:23). The righteous, who have this trustful hope in God, have a general confidence in God’s protection and help (Jeremiah 29:11) and are free from fear and anxiety (Psalm 46:2-3). The New Testament idea of hope is the recognition that in Christ is found the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises (Matthew 12:21, 1 Peter 1:3). Christian hope is rooted in faith in the divine salvation in Christ (Galatians 5:5). Hope of Christians is brought into being through the presence of the promised Holy Spirit (Romans 8:24-25). It is the future hope of the resurrection of the dead (Acts 23:6), the promises given to Israel (Acts 26:6-7), the redemption of the body and of the whole creation (Romans 8:23-25), eternal glory (Colossians 1:27), eternal life and the inheritance of the saints (Titus 3:5-7), the return of Christ (Titus 2:11-14), transformation into the likeness of Christ (1 John 3:2-3), the salvation of God (1 Timothy 4:10) or simply Christ Himself (1 Timothy 1:1). The certainty of this blessed future is guaranteed through the indwelling of the Spirit (Romans 8:23-25), Christ in us (Colossians 1:27), and the resurrection of Christ (Acts 2:26). Hope is produced by endurance through suffering (Romans 5:2-5) and is the inspiration behind endurance (1 Thessalonians 1:3; Hebrews 6:11). Those who hope in Christ will see Christ exalted in life and in death (Philippians 1:20). Trustworthy promises from God give us hope (Hebrews 6:18-19), and we may boast in this hope (Hebrews 3:6) and exhibit great boldness in our faith (2 Corinthians 3:12). By contrast, those who do not place their trust in God are said to be without hope (Ephesians 2:12, 1 Thessalonians 4:13). Along with faith and love, hope is an enduring virtue of the Christian life (1 Corinthians 13:13), and love springs from hope (Colossians 1:4-5). Hope produces joy and peace in believers through the power of the Spirit (Romans 12:12; 15:13). Paul attributes his apostolic calling to the hope of eternal glory (Titus 1:1-2). Hope in the return of Christ is the basis for believers to purify themselves in this life (Titus 2:11-14, 1 John 3:3). https://www.gotquestions.org/hopeBible.html WHAT IS THE CHRISTIAN HOPE?

SGBC | 88 October 8, 2023 is Pastor Appreciation Day. October is observed as National Clergy Appreciation Month. The month recognizes the contributions and services of pastors, priests, reverends, ministers, and all other clergymen. Devotees, on Pastor Appreciation Day, come together to express their gratitude to pastors and other staff of the church. The call to honor our church leaders’ contributions goes back to the time of Apostle Paul. As founder of many of the first Christian churches, Paul enjoined the congregation to give ‘double honor’ to the elders who managed the affairs of the church. He was especially concerned about honoring “those whose work is preaching and teaching.” Paul the apostle also entreated Christian communities to acknowledge those “who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord, and who admonish you.” He believed that holding these spiritual leaders “in the highest regard in love because of their work” is crucial to Christian beliefs. Please take time to thank Pastor Woullard for his leadership and our ministers and deacons who serve alongside him. Excerpted from: www.nationaltoday.com/pastor-appreciation-day Forrnearly four decades now, the country has recognized October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a time annually devoted to educating everyone about breast cancer — including metastatic breast cancer (MBC) — and the importance of early detection and access to timely, high-quality care. No matter who you are or where you live, breast cancer may touch your life. It’s necessary to understand the warning signs of breast cancer, your risk of breast cancer and what’s normal for you so you can take action if there are any changes in your breasts or underarm areas. KNOW YOUR RISK Knowing your family history is lifesaving. GET SCREENED For those at average risk, have a mammogram every year starting at age 40. KNOW YOUR NORMAL It’s important to know what’s normal for you so you can talk with your health care provider if something doesn’t look or feel right. Excerpted from: www.komen.org National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is an annual designation observed in October. For many, home is a place of love, warmth, and comfort. It’s somewhere that you know you will be surrounded by care and support, and a nice little break from the busyness of the real world. But for millions of others, home is anything but a sanctuary. The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are victims of physical violence by a partner every year. During DVAM, victim advocates, allied professionals, survivors of abuse, their loved ones, and the surrounding community come together to mourn the lives lost to domestic violence, celebrate the progress that has been made to end this epidemic, and connect with others working to create change. Whether it’s this month or any month domestic violence’s is horrific and should not be tolerated. If you are experiencing domestic abuse, know that there is help. If you are in danger, call 911. Excerpted from: www.nationaldaycalendar.com OCTOBER 29TH IS SUPER SUNDAY If you would like to be baptized, please see Deborah Woullard or Sandra Thompson. If you would like to dedicate your baby, please see Maxine Coleman.

If we believe what we heard and received in Roman 10:8-10 which says, “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): verse 9, that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Verse 10, For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation, then we have hope. What is this hope? The hope that God gives lives in us, and we live in Him through the Holy Spirit. Another reason we have hope is because we believe that Jesus Christ is the only Son of the Living God. Scripture says, For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whosoever believe in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son to condemn the world but that the world through Him might be saved. (John 3:16) This is what Christians believe. Our hope is therefore in what we believe. I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and that He was born, lived, died and rose from death for me and is now at the right side of God always interceding for me. What is your faith wrapped in? Do you have this same hope? If not, I admonish you today to get to know the Lord Jesus Christ. Then you can say with authority the words of Psalm 91:1, He that dwell in the secret place of the MOST HIGH GOD shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Then you will know and understand the Word that says from Leviticus 26 verse 7, You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you. Verse 8, Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you. This is a benefit of faith and hope in Almighty God. This is big, right? But first we have to believe that God is who He says He Is. What about you, do you believe? The song: My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ Blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame but wholly lean on Jesus’ Name. On Christ the solid rock I stand all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand. Let’s Pray: Father in the Name of Jesus, thank You for being the solid rock on which we stand because we know nobody cares about us like You. Thank You for being God all by yourself. No help needed. Thank You for taking care of us individually and collectively. You are Our Great God. Thank You for salvation and through that we have hope in You. In Jesus’ Name! Amen! And it is so! Humbly submitted by Rev. Cathy Ross Woulard Encouragement for October CHRISTIAN HOPE

SGBC | 14 Mental Wellness October is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) National Awareness Month. ADHD is a condition characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. ADHD is most commonly diagnosed in young people. An estimated 8.8% of children aged 4-17 have ADHD. While ADHD is usually diagnosed in childhood, it does not only affect children. An estimated 4.4% of adults aged 18-44 have ADHD. ADHD Symptoms While some behaviors associated with ADHD are “normal” and not a cause for concern to most people, someone with ADHD will have trouble controlling these behaviors and will show them much more frequently and for longer than 6 months. Signs of inattention include: • Becoming easily distracted and jumping from activity to activity. • Becoming bored with a task quickly. • Difficulty focusing attention or completing a single task or activity. • Trouble completing or turning in homework assignments. • Losing things such as school supplies or toys. • Not listening or paying attention when spoken to. • Daydreaming or wandering with lack of motivation. • Difficulty processing information quickly. • Struggling to follow directions. Signs of hyperactivity include: • Fidgeting and squirming, having trouble sitting still. • Non-stop talking. • Touching or playing with everything. • Difficulty doing quiet tasks or activities. Signs of impulsivity include: • Impatience. • Acting without regard for consequences, blurting things out. • Difficulty taking turns, waiting, or sharing. • Interrupting others. TREATMENT AND SUPPORT FOR THOSE WITH ADHD AND THEIR FAMILIES Treatments for ADHD include medications, behavioral therapy, self-management, education programs and assistance through schools or work or alternative treatment approaches. We also recommend our NAMI support groups and classes for those living with mental health conditions, as well as their families and loved ones.
