The game will be witnessed by millions if not billions of people worldwide. Multitudes will tune in and witness two teams engage in an epic battle of wits and wills that will decide world football supremacy. As a Church we also have a multitude of witnesses watching us as well. If you look at past Super Bowl Champions there are great similarities in the characteristics and makeup of their teams and an effective New Testament church, and yes they even dress alike. Helmets = The Helmet of Salvation. Shoulder Pads = The Breastplate of Righteousness. Girdle and Thigh Pads = Girding of the Loins with truth. Cleats = Shodding your feet with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace. Blocking Schemes = The Shield of Faith They are all very solid in several key areas. The same characteristics also abound in a Church that is on fire for the Lord and they must also be solid in the same key areas. Let’s look at a Super Bowl Champion and a Super Bowl Church. I. They Have a Good Defense It has been said that Offense sells tickets but “Defense Wins Championships.” A Super Bowl Champion must have a solid defense, one that stops the opponents’ offensive attacks. They must be able to turn back the opposing team and defend their territory. A Super Bowl Church must defend the Faith - It is the duty of all Christians. II. They Have a Good Playbook The Bible is our playbook! Good football players know their playbook! We need to know our playbook! III. They Have a Good Play Caller The Holy Spirit is our Play Caller. He not only signals in the play from God, but also brings about understanding of the playbook. IV. They Play Hard for 60 Minutes We must play hard for 4 quarters. How can we persevere and play hard for 60 minutes? 1. Know the Course You’re Called to Run; 2. Don’t Let Anything Slow You Down; and 3. Remember Those Who Have Finished Well. SUPER BOWL CHRISTIANS For a lot of players it’s just great to get to play in the “Super Bowl” but for others who have been there and lost in the past, just getting there is not the goal. They want to be champions. I’m afraid Christians are that way too, often times we’re just satisfied with being in the Super Bowl, just satisfied to be a Christian, instead of being Champion Christians. To be Super Bowl Champion Christians, just like in the game being played this month, you have to have three aspects to win with. We start with an effective; I. Offensive Plan -- One of the famous sports phrases by someone is there is no “i” in team, and that’s true. But from my suggestion for our Offensive Plan there are 4 “I’s” to have a successful plan that would help you be a “Super Bowl Champion Christian” In every football game there is always a coin toss to decide who gets to start on offense or on defense and I just believe it says something about your confidence level when you say, “hey we want to be aggressive in our plan, we don’t want to be that of reaction but action.” So in our Super Bowl, my recommendation is that we start on Offense and when we do that, I think there’s no better way than to start the game off and… A. Go Deep - On offense the QB will call a pass play and sometimes he’ll tell his receivers to go deep, run way down the field and I’ll throw it to you, he tells them go deep. 1. We in our Super Bowl, to be champions we need to go deep or (immerse yourself in the Word of God) get deeper and deeper in His word. 2. II Tim. 2:15 “Study to show thyself approved unto God a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 3. Psa. 119:11 says, “thy word have I hid in mine heart that I might not sin against thee.” But also our team needs to; B. Run Hard or Run with (intensity) or strength 1. Jos. 14:11 As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in. Jos. 14:12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spoke in that day. C. Keep Getting Up (insistence) meaning perseverance 1. Illustration: One of my favorite players in the NFL was Earl Campbell of the Houston Oilers back in the 70’s, early 80’s. He’d run the ball more than anyone I had ever seen, and took some ferocious hits, but even late in the game, while he might be slow getting off the ground and you didn’t think he’d make it back to the huddle, he kept getting back up, he kept going until the game was over. 2. Vince Lombardi once said, It does not matter how many times you get knocked down, but how many times you get up. D. Go for the Score (intention) 1. “Well done my good and faithful servant.” 2. I Cor. 9:25 “and every man that striveth (used in athletic games) for the mastery (the prize) is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.” 3. To be a Super Bowl Champion Christian you have to have an Offensive Plan, but just as important is to have a… II. Defensive Plan -- Eph. 6:10-18 A. Defend against the run and the pass (of Satan). Satan came after Jesus with many attacks and he comes at us in the same way as he did with Jesus. He comes with… B. The Reverse (deception) In football the reverse is when the QB gives the runner the ball and he starts running toward his end of the field and next thing you know when everybody on defense is running that way, the runner gives the ball to another guy who starts running the opposite way. Its deception on the opponents’ part to get your defense off balance. vs. 11 (nasb) says, Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes (trickery) of the devil. III. Special Teams A. Special teams are those players who have special capabilities, such as field goal kicker, punter etc. I believe in every church God has equipped us with “players if you will” with special skills called spiritual gifts. 1. These special gifts Paul says is for the good of the team, But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 2. Jesus needs you and the entire team to be champions. B. If the church is Christ’s body, which she is, and He has given to each member of His team a special gift or gifts, then how can we be defeated? Conclusion: A lot of people are just happy to make it to the game, but the difference is like Joe Namath once said, “If you aren’t going all the way, why go at all?” Through Christ we can be Super Bowl CHAMPION Christians, so lets go out there and WIN!!! FOUR REASONS WHY WE SHOULD CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH Black History Month is a time where we recognize the key roles, contributions, and sacrifices of African Americans throughout U.S. history. This monthlong observance grew from an initiative by Carter G. Woodson, a brilliant and highly accomplished son of slaves, to honor the heritage and achievements of African Americans with a week-long celebration in 1926. In 1976, President Gerald Ford designated February as Black History Month, urging all Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Every U.S. President since then has issued a proclamation in honor of Black History Month. Today, countries all over the world also dedicate a month to celebrating Black History Month. Here are four reasons we should all, regardless of our own heritage, celebrate Black History Month. 1. It Celebrates Diversity. Black History Month does not just promote diversity; it celebrates diversity. Promoting diversity is bringing awareness to the idea that we are all diverse and we all have something to contribute. But when we celebrate diversity, we are conveying the idea that diversity is beautiful. A celebration goes beyond recognizing the achievements of African Americans. It publicly honors these men and women. It tells their wonderful stories in a way that makes us realize how they have impacted our lives—how our lives would not be the same if these people did not take risks to accomplish amazing things. 2. It Unites Us. Celebrating diversity and recognizing its beauty brings us together. It helps us to learn about people from different cultures and backgrounds, and to understand how we are all connected. And finding this connection unites us. When we celebrate the achievements of people, groups and cultures from around the world, we are putting aside our opinions and differences to commemorate our shared history and to take joy in each other’s success. When we celebrate one another, we realize how our differences can actually bring us together rather than tear us apart. 3. It Takes Us Beyond The History Books. Throughout school, we take some form of history: World History, U.S. History, and European History. Typically, in our history textbooks, we focus on the “major players." Oftentimes, they leave out lesser-known figures that have accomplished incredible things. Rather than letting the history books tell us who is important, we can celebrate special months like Black History Month to give us an opportunity to learn about other historical figures that have impacted our lives and world. • Lewis Howard Latimer and Elijah McCoy For example, in history class, you probably have studied about Thomas Edison and the light bulb. But do you remember a guy by the name of Lewis Howard Latimer, an accomplished inventor and engineer who helped Edison by creating a longer-lasting filament for the light bulb? Or what about Elijah McCoy, a member of the National Inventor's Hall of Fame who held over 50 patents? Even today, we acknowledge the impact of his inventions with the phrase, "the Real McCoy," which means "the real thing." • Ida Wells and Benjamin Davis Jr. And even if we celebrate the figures written into our history books, we can take the time to learn about their lives beyond their names and basic facts. In history, you might have learned about Ida Wells, a prominent activist and journalist. But you might not know that she was an orphan from the age of 14 and took a teaching job to keep her brothers and sisters together. You might have heard about Benjamin O. Davis Jr., the first African American general in the U.S. Air Force. But you might enjoy learning more about his contributions in World War II and his leadership of the acclaimed Tuskegee Airmen. 4. It Helps Us Understand The Importance Of Our Stories. Black History Month is about sharing and celebrating the stories of countless men and women who made a difference in our world. Some achievements are noted more than others. But all of their stories reveal how they changed the world...and how we can, too. However we choose to observe Black History Month, we can allow the four reasons above to guide our celebration of diversity all year round. GOD’S SUPER BOWL TEAM God’s Super Bowl Team, what are we talking about? God is the Super (above, over, beyond) and Supreme (of authority, highest ranking, leading, chief, head, top, foremost), so it must be someone who will stand in the gap for what they believe. Those who are ready to move out when called. Those who will be the defense. Those who will be the tackles. Those who will be the quarterbacks. Those who will catch the ball. His Super Bowl team is always ready to do the will of the Father. The ones who will stand up for what is right, stand up for righteousness’s sake, and stand up when everybody else is sitting down on the Truth. The Super Bowl Team is like Joshua and Caleb the ones who said yes, we can take the land (Numbers 13:30). And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. Numbers 14 explains the division of the land. There are rewards for being on God’s Super Bowl Team. The answer is yes, we can do this, yes, we can march at the beat of the drum of God. The Super Bowl Team is the team who will say yes to God when they don’t feel right, when it doesn’t look like it’s going to come out right, that’s the Super Bowl team. Where are you standing right now? Who are you standing for? What has God done for you? How are you going to live, breathe; have your being without being a part of God’s Super Bowl Team? We are the Joshua’s we are the Caleb’s; we march, we move, we see the bigger picture. We see the future in Jesus. Now that we have all this in mind let’s pray about it. Father in the name of Jesus, thank You for Your love and kindness for us. We want to be on Your team Your Super Bowl Team. We want to stand for You. We want to be motivated by You. We want to be more like Jesus and not be afraid like Joshua and Caleb. We will follow You. Thank you, Father God, for loving us, teaching us and showing us the way we ought to be in this world today. In Jesus name I pray. Amen! And It Is So. Humbly submitted by Rev. Cathy Ross-Woulard Congratulations to Lt. Commander Myron L. Evans , USN, retired, his wife, Jackie and family. 1. The harp (or lyre) MENTAL WELLNESS IN 2023 LET’s GOOOOOO!!! As we begin the second month of this brand new year, we all wish to continue this new year with a renewed spirit and a renewed faith. There is so much that we could think of to improve on and yet so much we could choose to worry about. Let’s keep in mind that God knows our hearts, our desires, our worries, and HE knows just what we will and will not do in 2023! Consequently, I desire to share with you a simple technique to help reduce worry. It’s the GOD BOX! The God Box is a useful method to help you “LET GO of WORRY,” reduce your anxiety, and solve those insoluble problems. It will be a physical act of writing the worry down and “letting it go” by giving it up to GOD. You may call this box your “prayer box,” your “letting go box,” your “no more worry box,” or whatever you prefer. Also, it does not have to be a small box; it could be a jar, a small bag, or any small container. I originally utilized this technique in working with clients who were working a 12-Step Program for addiction, which is where this technique originated. Many have found it to be very effective over the years. I strongly encourage everyone to give it a try. It sounds so simple, yet it is so powerful!! Additionally, it is pleasing to GOD, which should be the most rewarding aspect of it because he desires nothing more than for his children to trust in HIM and rely on HIM! Remember: Philippians 4:6 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to GOD.” By utilizing this GOD BOX, you are pleasing God as you give your worries, requests to Him. To create your God Box: Write down your worries, issues, requests, and/or prayer concerns that you have been unable to resolve or “let go” of on a piece of paper and place that paper in the God Box and relinquish control of fixing the situation to a higher power. In time, maybe 6 months to a year, return to this box and read what you placed in the box to see if God has solved your worry or issue. I will warn you, it is a POWERFUL feeling! When you think of the problem again, say to yourself, “ it’s okay, it is in the God Box. I have given it to God to sort out...His higher intelligence will do it for me!” The God Box is able to handle anything, such as worry about your health, your future, your job, your relationships, your children, your attitude, your finances, or ANYTHING. We do not have to be anxious and worry because we can freely talk to GOD about anything. We can cry out to Him for help and He will hear us. My hope for your 2023 is that you learn to lean on God by trying this simple technique. Written by: Dr. Stacey Blalock Henry
