SGBC | 3 My advice to the graduates: You are a few years away from beginning your professional life, but you are only weeks away from planning for it. The decision you make about your professional life should be the easiest decision you ever make — your career should be about one thing: passion. It’s not about money or prestige or power or fame. It’s about passion. Once you find your passion everything will come together. Someone once said, “Do what you love to do for a career, and you’ll never work a day in your life” — that’s passion. Find your hobby and see if you can get paid for it. To be successful in your professional life, find your passion, because success always follows passion. When it comes to your personal life, it’s all about priorities. It’s not just about fun. It’s as simple as that. Arrange your priorities in the correct manner and fun will present itself with little, or no, effort. But it’s got to be the right kind of fun, and it’s got to come in the right places. That’s where it gets tricky. It’s probably going to take you a long time to figure out how to be a success in your personal life and how to find the true source of fun — it’s not at a college party or at someone’s apartment at 3 am. Those fleeting moments may be temporarily enjoyable, but you’re never going to achieve a fuller life at a college party. Learn the difference between happiness and pleasure. The things that truly matter are: Faith, family, friends, food and fun. Once you’ve mastered the first four — in order — the fun will have already happened. You don’t need to go looking for it. Go out and make a difference. Befriend the underdog. Laugh a lot. Make others laugh a lot. Visit a nursing home. Make them laugh a lot. Hug your parents long and hard. Hug them so long that they’re the ones who let go first. Hug your favorite teacher. Thank him or her. If you don’t appreciate them today, I promise you that you will soon. Hug the teacher you liked least, too. They probably worked just as hard; you just don’t appreciate that yet. Don’t go broke trying to look rich. And don’t waste time worrying about the doors that have closed behind you. Doors will always open in front of you. Be open to new experiences, that is where opportunity lives. Always keep moving forward. The happiest and most successful people try to be a little bit better every day— a better son or daughter, a better friend, a better team member, a better citizen. You don’t have to be a lot better, just a little better. The only person you should ever compare yourself to is yesterday’s you. When you’re thinking positively about someone, let them know. Call them immediately and say, “I know this sounds weird, but life is short, and when I think of something I want to get it out. I have always been so impressed by the way you do_______.” Or, “I think you are a great parent.” Or “I truly value your friendship.” One day you’re going to have the last conversation with someone you love. Make sure it comes from a place of love and is one you can live with for the rest of your life. Make mistakes. Then don’t sweat the mistakes you’ve made. Learn from your mistakes. Go out and make more mistakes, you’ll get it right eventually. Forgive others for their mistakes. That whole “do unto others” thing is great advice. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Don’t be so hard on others. Just make it a general rule not to be hard. Find your “one thing.” Your one thing is something beyond your family life and professional life that makes your neighborhood, city, or state just a little better. It can be as simple as going out once a week and picking up trash on the side of the same road or volunteering at your local school to read to students. Think big or think small— start a local festival, promote local sports, feed those in need— just do one thing. If everyone in a neighborhood, city, or state did just one thing to make it a better place to live think of how great things could be. It doesn’t have to be a big thing; it just has to be one thing. It can be infectious, and it can start with you. Volunteer where you feel led. Give of your time, give of your resources, and give your love. When you think you’ve given enough, then give some more. Find your passion. Make that your career. Then go be passionate and have fun. Onward! Congratulations and good luck! SGBC | 10 GROW WHERE YOU ARE PLANTED Grow where you're planted is a phrase often used to encourage believers to move forward with their walk and work for the Lord. The idea of growing where you're planted stems from various Scriptures. It denotes the notion of moving forward internally for change to do the work of the Lord. It also calls for you to grow where God has placed you to do the work He's set before you. It indicates that you must continue to grow in God's Holy Word and not forget who He is no matter where you are or what position He has given you. There are many examples of people in God's Holy Word who were placed or planted in spaces where they grew in faith, prayer, or service for God. Ruth, Moses, David, and John the Baptist, to name a few. Each of these people faced challenges in places where God placed them and was blessed due to their faith and focus on God. The following Scriptures show us how God wants us to grow where He's placed us and what we should do with the growth He's given us. Colossians 2:6-7 “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” Psalm 92:12-13 “The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God.” HOW TO GROW WHERE YOU'RE PLANTED In order to grow, you have to be “watered.” Being watered in the human sense means you must be receptive to direction, correction, teachings, and guidance from those God places in your life. Water your mind and spirit with God's Holy Word. Pour your soul out to Him with prayer. Listen to Him as He guides you during this period of growth. Be receptive of where you've been planted. Seeds are buried in the dirt. You may be at a place in your life where you feel as though you don't belong, or you may be down and out. However, the place where God has planted you is meant for your good. The planter decides where the best soil is for flowers to bloom. With time, patience, and nurturing from the planter (God), the seed/person/you will blossom into beautiful flourishing flowers with a purpose. Give yourself grace. Wherever God has positioned you has a distinct purpose with specific lessons for you to learn for your growth. It's important for you to know that growth does not happen overnight. It may take days, weeks, years, or decades for you to learn what God wants you to do. Be patient with your growing process and be grateful for the journey. Learn what God wants you to know. Accept each lesson you learn during this period. Growth is uncomfortable. It is not easy, but it is a necessary part of life. Remember that you are growing for yourself and others. God does not put you in places to work and grow simply for yourself. You will meet people along the way who will need your help on their journey right where you are. WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR GROWTH • Work diligently for the Lord where He's placed you. Dedicate your time and talents toward the work God has given you to do in the position you are in. • Work where God has placed you. There are so many places to work in God's Kingdom; however, there are specific places where He places everyone. Wherever God has placed you, be content and diligent until He is ready for you to move somewhere else. As you continue to grow where God has placed you, remember that He knows what's best for your life. It's also important to understand that God will not put you in a space where He has not prepared you to grow according to His will and the work He has designed for your life. It's also important to know and understand that you may or may not see the areas in your life where you need to grow. Everyone is aware of the fact that they need to improve in various areas of their lives. But many times, it's difficult to discover those areas when you are busy living life. Being established in areas where God wants you to be will take you out of your comfort zone for your own good. Even if you believe you don't belong in a particular space or if you believe you aren't qualified to be where God has placed you, understand God knows what He's doing. Growth is hard but necessary. Be receptive to where God has placed you. Ask Him daily how He wants you to grow and what he wants you to learn. It will benefit you and those around you more than you know. IN JEREMAIH 17:7-8 (NLT) It reads: “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.” This tells me that where God has planted us in ministry or other areas of our lives, we will flourish if we trust and have hope and confidence in Him. We will prosper. Why? Because we are grounded and rooted in Him, and our purpose is to honor Him in all that we do. We are firm in where He has placed us, and we will do well in any hardship conditions that will come up in our lives. Because they are going to come, but our roots go deep in the place He has planted us. Good, bad, or indifferent we will produce. We will flourish, why! Because it is for God that we live, breathe and have our being, Hallelujah! We will always produce fruit. Psalm 92:12-14(NLT) reads, “But the godly will flourish like palm trees and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon. For they are transplanted to the Lord’s own house. They flourish in the courts of our God. Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green.” This tells me that the righteous will flourish in the house of the Lord. He/she shall grow like a cedar -strong. They will bear fruit in old age. They will be fresh. What more can we ask for if we remain where God has placed us. We must obey His Will for our lives. Be confident in what He tells us to do, because the way has already been prepared to do His Will in that place. We give God the Glory, Honor and Praise! Let us Pray: Father, thank You for these words of encouragement. Thank You for telling us that we are strong and will flourish where You have planted us. Continue to teach, instruct, and reveal to us where we are to work in Your Kingdom, and we will obey. In Jesus’ Name. Amen! And it is so! Psalm 92:12-14(NLT) Humbly submitted by Rev. Happy Children’s Day!

SGBC | 20 1. DECIDE MENTALLY TO BE “ALL IN”: This is the first step. To mentally tell yourself that you are going to bloom. There’s no more “one foot in and the other foot out.” Decide today to put both of your feet in and jump. 2. LOVE WHO YOU ARE RIGHT NOW: Know that you ARE enough. You don’t need to lose weight. Or have perfect kids. Or have longer hair. Or have a flawless face. Or have a closet full of new clothes and sparkly shoes. Or have it all together. Love who you are RIGHT where you are. 3. CHANGE YOUR QUESTIONS: Rather than asking yourself, “Why me?!” and “Why can’t I have what I want?” Switch your questions out! This time ask yourself, “How can I make today the BEST day?” and “What joy can I bring into my life and others this week?” 4. GET YOUR BODY MOVING: Get outside and go for a walk. Do an at home work out. Go to the gym. Take your kids to the park. Not only will your body thank you, but your brain will too! 5. FIND YOUR WHY: Maybe there is a reason you are planted where you are? Find that reason. Maybe there is someone that needs YOU. Just YOU. You are so unique and can bring so much good to the people around you! God has put you where you are for a reason – so find that reason and BE that reason. 6. TURN YOUR HOUSE INTO A HOME: Make it a place you WANT to be. Maybe it’s smaller than you would like. Or dirtier than you wish. Or a complete unorganized disaster that you have no idea where to even put things anymore. Start with a corner – organize it. Declutter it. Throw things away. Create a system. And, then move on to the next corner. Turn your home into a place you LOVE to be. 7. REMEMBER WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL: You can’t control everything. Things out of our hands are going to happen. But focus on the things you CAN control. Your state of mind. The way you look at others. The things you do. The things you say. 8. FIND A NEW HOBBY: It is NEVER too late to find something you LOVE to do! Heck – if you are in a situation where you are not thrilled about blooming… today we are going to find ONE thing that you LOVE to do…and you’re going to do it! And you’re going to do it a lot! Because it makes you happy! 9. WRITE DOWN 30 THINGS YOU ARE THANKFUL FOR: Grab a piece of paper and write down all of your many blessings – I promise you have a whole lot more to be thankful for than you think. 10. PLAY TOURIST IN YOUR OWN CITY: That’s right! If you are planted there – you’re going to LOVE it! Playing tourist in your own city is SO fun! Go to a restaurant you have never been to! Do a fun activity you have never done! Go see a show or a concert that is coming to town! Explore your own city and fall in love with where you are!
