The Kuching city is known for its rich culture, and even as the city
develops as decades pasts, the nostalgia remains for those who had
lived here in a whole different era. Lima.tujoh Cafe and Guesthouse
is double-storey shophouse located at No.57, Upper China Street,
hence the name "lima tujuh" in the Malay language. This shophouse
holds precious childhood memories of a retired school teacher Sim

INDAH CAFE
BY: QARIN HAZIQ AND NUR JASMA
As with other major cities around the world, cafes in Sarawak
used to be a place to eat light meals and sip on some nice iced
coffee. In Kuching, the cafe scene has evolved way beyond this.
A cafe is now a place for friends and family to meet, savour the
food, beverages and cozy ambience against a classic Sarawak
background. However, there is one particular themed cafe in
Kuching that has food and drinks but also an art gallery, a
cooking class venue and an event space?! Well, this multi-
function establishment is called Indah Cafe.

Their nasi lemak platters can be shared from
2 to 4 people, and includes 'ayam kuah satay'
and black pepper chicken. Ayam pansuh, a
traditional dish of the Ibans and Bidayuhs is
available with red or brown rice options. For
cakes, they have crunchy but velvety creamy
burnt cheesecake. Besides, they have a concise
selection of vegan and vegetarian options like
sesame cold soba, granola bowl, pesto toast
and cheesy samosa canai quesadilla which we

COMMONS
KUCHING
BY: NUR JASMA AND DERREN
There are numerous heritage
gems in Kuching that are
interesting to learn and discover,
one of it is the first White Rajah of
Sarawak named James Brooke. The
Brookes were responsible for most
of the early architectural and urban
development of Kuching for a
century, traces of it can still be
found today. Many people see
Commons Kuching as any other
high-end F&B restaurant, little did
they know it was once the state
legislative assemby room! Here we
want to share a brief history about
The Old Courthouse and details on
Commons Kuching!

COLONIAL BAROQUE
We managed to have a short but brief virtual interview with the marketing
manager of Commons Kuching, Nafezah Cornelius. Nafezah explained that
The Old Courthouse was built by Sir Charles Brooke, the second Rajah in
1868. Here, hosted many historical events, including the state legislative
assembly between 1878 and 1973. It housed government offices, printing
office and hosted ceremonies. In 1883, the clock tower was added and in
1924, the Charles Brooke memorial was constructed at the building
entrance.
The Old Courthouse is well known for its distinct colonial baroque, with
iron wood shingle roofing, untouched hard wood floors and massive brick
columns the supports and surround the court house, giving this building a
grand and majestic look. There is also a Pavilion Building and a fort.
Interestingly, the centre of the courtyard is where the Mile Zero of Kuching
starts, as mileage distance of towns are measured from here as the court
house is the site of Sarawak's' first post office.
After major upgrades as years passed, the Old Courthouse is a modern
event space, and it is converted into Sarawak Tourism Complex in 2003.
Now, it serves as a unique lifestyle venue, aimed to promote Sarawak's art
and culture, through a curated line of contemporary F&B establishments
located around the building such as Commons Kuching!
SARAWAK EXPERIENCE l PAGE 20
Modern but Chic
The story of Commons Kuching starts with the company, Food Journal.
The Food Journal was formed in mid 2013 and the brain child behind this
brand is Ronald Ling and Elvina Ngo, that started this brand just for the
love and passion they had for a full flag concept cafe on the sunny side of
Borneo. Food Journal has numerous brands under their belt, including
Keeper's Ground in the Spring shopping mall, Roots (fine dining),
Commons Kuching and The Den (bar).
Each brand has its own personality and story to tell. However, the one
thing they all have in common is their stories are nurtured with
truckloads of love and passion for creating beautiful and interesting F&B
concepts for everyone to enjoy. For Commons in particular, it is a modern
chic cafe, that merges the design of the heritage, 1870's Old Courthouse.
It has a eclectic mixture of vintage, rattan and string furniture from Kedai
Bikin and plants, giving it a tropical vibe respite from the busy streets
outside. Contributions from local artisan such as the Penan weavers from
Tanoti Craft and Dutch artist Lisette Scheers for the artwork in the
restaurant.

According to Beatrice, operating
manager of Commons mentioned that
their signature cakes is basque burnt
cheesecake. As for hot food, she
suggested to try their 'char kueh tiaw',
Commons burger, four bean salmon
and chicken chop Hainan style.
However, do take note that the prices
here are slightly higher ranging from
RM10 to rm40. Beatrice added that
there are many teenagers and business
people who come here to relax and
have a chit chat. "Our customers can
also play board games, do some
drawing and coloring while waiting for
their food as we provide these
materials on a table." said Beatrice.
After you have a pleasant time at
Commons, you may visit their other
outlets in the Old Courthouse too!
Roots is an informal dining restaurant
aiming to bring garden to table food
while The Den is a bar serving specialty
cocktail and gin. So many choices in
such a small area!

ENTER THE TWO

WITH THIS UNIQUE-

In Kuching, Korean restaurants are
considered common as it can be
spotted in major shopping malls
and shop lots, indicating that the
cat city indeed is being invaded by
the K-fever. As for ourselves, its
hard to deny that we are sucked
into the whirlpool of Korean food
enthusiasts. We decided to drive all
the way to Matang to experience
this Korean Cafe but with a twist.
Established in 2019, Japangi 2D is
unlike any other Korean Cafe you
have seen, it is bound to grab both
your interest and attention as the
entire cafe from the exterior to the
interior is designed to look like 2D

According to the owner, Miss Jocelyn,
자판기the meaning behind Japangi is vending
machine in Korean ( ja-pang-i).
This provides a clear explanation to the
concept of the door of the Cafe, shaped
exactly like a vending machine! The
concept of this Cafe creates a 2D
optical illusion, offering a feeling of
having crossed dimensions into a comic
book illustration. As we entered the
shop, we were greeted with black and
white comic strip furniture, walls, floors
and an 'Annyeong Haseyo' by the staff,
which put a smile on our faces.
She further mentioned that most of the
2D drawings throughout the Cafe were
hand-painted, including the furniture.
There is a similar Cafe in South Korea
but now you do not have to travel all
the way to Korea to capture these
Instagram worthy moments!
