to be getting in each other’s way as they block
the route to goal during our meeting with Crystal
Palace on this day 52 years ago.

Palace forward Gerry Queen is looking to
capitalise on any loose ball that might come his way,
while Joe Kinnear stands guard on the goal-line –
but there was nothing for Queen or Palace to
celebrate on this Boxing Day as we won 2-0 in our
Division One clash.

It turned out to be a poignant day for Perryman,
who netted his first-ever Spurs goal to double our
lead before half-time after Alan Mullery had opened
the scoring in the first few minutes. The young
midfielder had made his debut as a 17-year-old
against Sunderland three months earlier and this
goal was the next step of his development, coming
just five days after his 18th birthday.

We’d beaten the Eagles 2-0 at Selhurst Park in
the August of the 1969/70 season and completed
the double over them with this victory, although they
then proceeded to knock us out of the FA Cup at the
fourth round stage with a 1-0 home win in a replay
after holding us to a goalless draw in the first game
at White Hart Lane.

For Perryman, of course, these were the first
few months of what would turn out to be a long and
illustrious career as a Spurs player. His goal against
Palace was the first of 39 in our colours and he went
on to make a club record 854 appearances over the
next 17 years, many of them as captain.
