As part of an occasional feature, Andy Greeves Super SubSUB
takes at a look back at a match in which a
substitute has made a real impact for us. Today SUPER
he looks at Jamie O’Hara’s role in our second-half
comeback against Burnley in a League Cup semi-
final tie in 2009.

Having lifted the League Cup in 2008, our defence of
the trophy saw us beat Newcastle United, Liverpool
and Watford to reach the last four of the competition
the following season. The semi-final draw paired
us with then-Championship outfit Burnley, while
Manchester United faced Derby County in the other
two-legged tie.

Prior to the start of our first leg clash with the
Clarets at White Hart Lane on 6 January, 2009,
Jermain Defoe was paraded before our fans, as his
return transfer to the Club from Portsmouth was
confirmed. The England striker was unavailable for
selection that night, with Manchester United loanee
Fraizer Campbell partnering Roman Pavlyuchenko in
our forward line. Both frontmen were in fine form in
the competition that season, with ‘Pav’ having scored
in each round while he and Campbell both got braces
in our 4-2 triumph over Liverpool in round four.

Burnley produced a lively first-half performance
in N17 and took the lead after 15 minutes when
Chris Eagles crossed for Martin Paterson to finish
from close range. The visitors had further chances,
including a 23rd-minute header from Robbie Blake
that was inches off target while Pavlyuchenko forced
a fine save from Clarets goalkeeper Brian Jensen at
the other end.

Five minutes later, O’Hara got on the scoresheet Spurs: Gomes, Corluka, Burnley: Jensen,

O’Hara.

Having scored a goal and made two assists in
our 4-1 victory, O’Hara reflected on the second-half
turnaround after the game.

“The gaffer wasn’t happy at half-time because it
was a disappointing way in which to start the game
and the whole first half was pretty poor,” he said.
“But Harry said that all the fans want to see is a bit
of passion, so he told us to go out and show that
we’re the better side and play with a bit of pride,
and that’s what we did.

“We’ve got one foot in the door at Wembley (for
the final), although it’s going to be a difficult game
at Burnley who we saw in the first half can play. But
it’s such a big game for the Club and we can’t let
these opportunities slip by. They come round once
in a lifetime and, because I missed out on the final
last season, I want to be on the pitch at Wembley
more than anyone.”

Prior to the second leg, then-Burnley manager
Owen Coyle compared the task of overcoming the
Clarets’ deficit and reaching the Wembley final
themselves as being similar to “trying to climb
Everest and beyond”. He would surely have been
impressed by his team’s efforts as they levelled the
aggregate scoreline and forced extra time at Turf
Moor with goals from Robbie Blake, Chris McCann
and Jay Rodriguez.

It was another ‘super sub’ who ultimately ensured
we got the result we needed in Lancashire to
progress to the final. Pavlyuchenko, who replaced
Luka Modric after 65 minutes of the second
leg, scored with just two minutes of extra time
remaining. Jermain Defoe added a second just
moments later, as we were beaten 3-2 on the night
but won the tie 6-4 on aggregate.

O’Hara, who made 56 appearances and scored
seven goals for us between 2007 and 2009, came on
as a substitute for Pavlyuchenko in our League Cup
Final against Manchester United on 1 March, 2009.
He subsequently missed in the shootout as we lost
4-1 on penalties after a goalless draw after extra
time.

Born in Rochdale, McNeil spent time at Manchester United as a youngster before joining
the Burnley Academy ranks in 2014. He was named Clarets Young Player of the Year for
2018, and made his Premier League debut on the final day of the 2017/18 season. His
first league start came in August 2018 against Manchester United, the same week that
saw him gain Europa League experience with Burnley. He scored his first senior goal
later that year against West Ham United as he cemented a spot in Sean Dyche’s squad.
International recognition has also come McNeil’s way, representing England Under-20s
at the Toulon Tournament and being called up for the Under-21s earlier this year.

TTRrue ColoursUECOLOURSWe all have our favourites when it comes to
past Spurs kits and, sometimes, they can evoke
memories of specific games, moments and the
players who wore them. Continuing our series for
the 2019/20 season, Billy Shaw chats to our players
– past and present – to find out what comes into
their minds when they look back at a selection of
our shirts from seasons gone by. Today, we speak to
former defender Pascal Chimbonda, who had two
spells in our colours between 2006 and 2009 and

SPURS AWAY KIT,
2006/07

Our light blue away shirt of 2006/07 was in fact
the first Spurs top Pascal ever put on after joining
us from Wigan in August, 2006.

Prior to playing in it on his debut, he wore it in
front of the cameras at his official unveiling as a
Spurs player at our old training base in Chigwell,
joining then-manager Martin Jol and fellow new
signing Mido – who wore the home strip – for a
specially-arranged photo call to mark the duo’s
arrival.

As for his memories of matches in this kit, which
featured navy blue shorts alongside the much
brighter shirts and socks, Pascal said: “This colour
is difficult to find a lot of memories of because we
didn’t play with this one a lot.

“I guess the main thing that comes to mind is my
goal at Fulham, where I scored in the last couple
of minutes to get us a point (1-1 draw). That and my
first game for Spurs, away at Manchester United
at the start of the season in 2006.”

We lost by a goal to nil at Old Trafford, but
had slightly better fortunes in the game Pascal
mentions at Craven Cottage. It was January, 2007,
and we’d gone a goal down towards the end of the
game after Vincenzo Montella scored a penalty,
but Pascal popped up two minutes from time to
equalise against the hosts, who had earlier gone
down to 10 men after Heidar Helguson was shown
a second yellow card.
